The Battleships of the Iowa Class A Design and Operational History

The four battleships of the Iowa class, the crowning achievement of U.S. battleship construction, had exceptionally long careers and each left a distinctive mark not only on the U.S. Navy but on naval history at large. Built as the ultimate American battleship and designed to engage the major units of the Japanese and German fleets, the vessels were commissioned in the closing stages of World War II, the beginning of half a century of service during which individual units saw action in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Lebanese Civil War, and finally the Persian Gulf War. As such, these ships are symbolic of the primacy of U.S. seapower during the Cold War. The preservation of all four members of this mighty class as museums is testament not only to their enduring fascination for successive generations of Americans, but also to the immense technical, financial, military, and political resources wielded by the United States during the second half of the twentieth century. PHILIPPE CARESSE was born into a naval family in 1964 and joined the French Navy

in 1982, serving in the destroyer d’Estrées. He has published an extensive range of ship monographs on the French, German, U.S., and Japanese navies from the latenineteenth century to World War II, and is coauthor with John Jordan of French Battleships of World War One and French Armoured Cruisers. He is the harbormaster of a marina on the Côte d’Azur.

Originally published in Japan in 2005, each album in the Japanese Naval Warship photo album series contains official photographs taken by the Kure Maritime Museum, as well as those taken by private individuals. These pictorial records document the main types of Japanese vessels, from battleships to submarines, based on the best images from Shizuo Fukui, a former Imperial Japanese Navy commander and technician. These photos include the ones Fukui began collecting as a young boy and continued to do after he began work as a naval shipbuilder, and those that he was given in order to complete a photographic history of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s ships. The latter included images gathered by Nagamura Kiyoshi, a shipbuilder who proactively collected photos, and from the collection of machinist Amari Yoshiyuki. Moreover, with the help of shipbuilder Makino Shigeru, among others, Fukui was able to continue gathering photographs and other items throughout the postwar period. Thus, it is not an exaggeration to say that Fukui dedicated his entire life to this work. Six Victories

North Africa, Malta, and the Mediterranean Convoy War, November 1941–March 1942 Six Victories examines one of the most interesting and instructive naval campaigns of World War II: the war on traffic in the Mediterranean during the fall and winter of 1941–42. It is a cautionary tale of how sea power was practiced, and how it shifted 180 degrees overnight. Based on British and Italian archival sources, the book emphasizes strategic context, the role of intelligence, and the campaign’s logistics. In October 1941 the British Admiralty based a surface strike force in Malta to attack Axis sea lanes between Italy and Africa. Aided by Ultra intelligence, submarines, and bombers based in Malta, this force dominated the Central Mediterranean. From the end of October through the middle of December 1941, less than a third of the supplies shipped from Italian ports arrived in Libya. Shortages of ammunition and fuel finally compelled the Afrika Korps to retreat four hundred miles. Then, in the span of thirty hours, this all changed. First, Italian naval forces broke the blockade by fighting through a major convoy that arrived in time to blunt the British advance; next, the strike force plowed into a minefield laid by Italian cruisers; and finally, in a daring attack, Italian commandos crippled the Mediterranean Fleet’s battleships in port. The swing in fortune was immediate and dramatic. Six Victories breaks new ground in the historiography of World War II. A compelling story, it relates lessons that are relevant today and should be required reading for all who practice the art of power at sea and for those who want to understand the intricate and interrelated factors that are the foundations of military success. Rear Admiral Herbert V. Wiley A Career in Airships and Battleships BY M. ERNEST MARSHALL

This book is simultaneously a biography of Rear Adm. Herbert V. Wiley and a history of the U.S. Navy’s lighter-than-air (LTA) program. As tensions rose between Japan and the United States over control of East Asia and the Pacific Ocean, the prospects of war between the two nations increased. The Navy tracked Germany’s use of zeppelins during World War I and saw an aircraft with the potential to conduct long-range reconnaissance over the oceans—something that could not be achieved by airplanes or surface ships. While rapid progress was being made in manned flight, it was still young enough that the future of LTA vs. HTA (heavier-than-air) flight was unknown. At the time, airships had a much greater range than airplanes. In its history, the Navy had four great airships—the USS Shenandoah, the USS Los Angeles, the USS Akron, and the USS Macon. Wiley served on all four of these vessels and the history of each is covered through his career. Three of the airships met with disaster and Wiley survived the crash of two of them. Through an examination of the records of the Navy’s Courts of Inquiry, M. Ernest Marshall explores in detail the events leading to the crashes. M. From Kites to Cold War The Evolution of Manned Airborne Reconnaissance BY TYLER MORTON From Kites to Cold War tells the story of the evolution of manned airborne reconnaissance. Long a desire of military commanders, the ability to see the terrain ahead and gain foreknowledge of enemy intent was realized when Chinese airmen mounted kites to surveil their surroundings. Kite technology was slow to spread, and by the late nineteenth century European nations had developed the balloon and airship to conduct this mission.

By 1918, it was obvious that the airplane had become the reconnaissance platform of the future. Used successfully by many nations during the Great War, aircraft technology and capability experienced its most rapid evolutionary period during World War II. Entering the war with just basic airborne imagery capabilities, by V-E and V-J days, air power pioneers greatly improved imagery collection and developed sophisticated airborne signals intelligence collection capabilities. The United States and other nations put these capabilities to use as the Cold War immediately followed. Flying near the periphery of and sometimes directly over the Soviet Union, airborne reconnaissance provided the intelligence necessary to stay one step ahead of the Soviets throughout the Cold War.

TYLER MORTON is a career U.S. Air Force intelligence officer with over 2,500 flight hours on various reconnaissance aircraft including the RC-135 and the MC-12. He holds a PhD in military strategy from Air University and is a graduate of the Air Force’s School of Advanced Air and Space Studies.

Dorwart’s History of the Office of Naval Intelligence, 1865–1945

This is the biography of the founding in 1882 and operation through two world wars of America’s first permanent intelligence agency, the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI). Jeffery M. Dorwart shows how and why a tiny, late nineteenth century U.S. Navy bureau created to collect information about foreign warship design became a complex and sometimes troubled domestic and worldwide intelligence agency. More significantly, this history of ONI demonstrates how the founders and first generations of U.S. naval officers trained to man warships at sea confronted what seemed an inherent dilemma in new missions that interfered with providing technical and operational information to their navy. Dorwart explains the forces that created this dilemma and how ONI officers responded in different ways to their intelligence mission. How the Few Became the Proud Crafting the Marine Corps Mystique, 1874–1918 BY HEATHER VENABLE For more than half of its existence, members of the Marine Corps largely self-identified as soldiers. It did not yet mean something distinct to be a Marine, either to themselves or to the public at large. As neither a land-based organization like the Army nor an entirely sea-based one like the Navy, the Corps’ missions overlapped with both institutions. This work argues that the Marine Corps could not and would not settle on a mission, and therefore it turned to an image to ensure its institutional survival. The process by which a maligned group of nineteenth-century naval policemen began to consider themselves to be elite warriors benefited from the active engagement of Marine officers with the Corps’ historical record as justification for its very being. Rather than look forward and actively seek out a mission that could secure their existence, late nineteenth-century Marines looked backward and embraced the past. They began to justify their existence by invoking their institutional traditions, their many martial engagements, and their claim to be the nation’s oldest and proudest military institution. This led them to celebrate themselves as superior to soldiers and sailors. Italian forces faced local populations while conducting counterinsurgency (COIN) operations in what was, for them, a new theater of war. In Libya, the rebellion was quelled in the space of ten years, at an admittedly high price for the regional forces. In Ethiopia, where COIN operations were interrupted by World War II, the available data suggests that military actions, accompanied by a more responsible policy toward the population, would have eventually defeated the insurgency. The use of air power in Ethiopia made a huge difference, and its lessons were learned long before the French experience in Algeria. The Italians waged counterinsurgency operations over twenty years in two geographically separate theaters, and in two very different operational environments. Much can be learned from these different experiences. FEDERICA SAINI FASANOTTI graduated in contemporary history with honors and then gained

Battle of Midway America’s Decisive Strike in the Pacific in WWII BY JOHN GREHAN Aware of the sensitivity of the Americans toward Hawaii after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto believed that if he attacked there again, the U.S. commander, Admiral Chester Nimitz, would be certain to commit all his strength to its defense. For his attack, Yamamoto selected the Naval Air Station on the Midway Atoll which was beyond the range of most U.S. land-based aircraft. Yamamoto launched his strike on 4 June 1942, but the United States had intercepted and deciphered Japanese signals and Nimitz, with three aircraft carriers, knew exactly Yamamoto’s exact plans. Yamamoto had hoped to draw the U.S. carriers into his trap but instead, he sailed into an ambush. The four-day battle resulted in the loss of four Japanese aircraft carriers, the U.S. Navy losing only one. The Japanese were never able to recover from these losses, and it was the Americans who were able to take control of the Pacific. British Town Class Cruisers Southampton and Belfast Classes: Design, Development and Performance BY CONRAD WATERS Entering service between 1937 and 1939, the ten British “Town” class cruisers were the most modern vessels of their type in the Royal Navy when World War II began. Battlecruiser Repulse Detailed in the Original Builders’ Plans BY JOHN ROBERTS The technical details of British warships were recorded in a set of plans produced by the builders on completion of every ship. Known as the “as fitted” general arrangements, these drawings represented the exact appearance and fitting of the ship as it entered service. Intended to provide a permanent reference for the Admiralty and the dockyards, these highly detailed plans were drawn with exquisite skill in multicolored inks and washes that represent the acme of the draftsman’s art. ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM

he Naval Institute Press is pleased to announce the publication of the oral history of the late Rear Adm. Herbert Spencer Matthews Jr., U.S. Navy (Retired). This memoir is noteworthy because of the variety of billets Admiral Matthews held during his long career and because he was the U.S. Navy’s first former enlisted pilot to obtain flag rank—one of only two altogether. He also served as Deputy Commander U.S. Naval Forces Vietnam during the controversial incursion into Cambodia in the spring of 1970. Matthews enlisted in the Navy in 1940, underwent flight training in 1942–43, and flew wartime patrols in 1944–45 as a member of Patrol Bombing Squadron 105 (VPB105). From 1945 to 1947 he served as a test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland. In 1947–49 he was a pilot in Patrol Squadron Five (VP-5). He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Tulane University in 1950–51 and attended General Line School and Communications School at Monterey, California, in 1951–52. In 1953 Matthews was assistant air officer of the escort carrier Salerno Bay (CVE110), followed by a tour in 1953–55 as flag secretary for Commander Carrier Division Two. He underwent survival training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 1955 and from 1955 to 1957 was executive officer of Attack Squadron 76 (VA-76). He was a student at the Naval War College in 1957–58; in 1958–59 commanded Attack Squadron 113 (VA-113); and served from 1959 to 1962 as part of the Institute of Naval Studies (a forerunner of the Center for Naval Analyses) at the Naval War College. He commanded Carrier Air Wing Two (CVW-2) in 1962–63 and served 1964–65 as executive officer of the aircraft carrier Hancock (CVA-19), including during early air strikes against North Vietnam. He was a Joint Staff planner, dealing with NATO nuclear weapons issues, 1965–67, then commanded the amphibious transport dock Hermitage (LSD-34) in 1967–68, during a Vietnam deployment. He commanded the aircraft carrier Independence (CVA-62) in 1968–69 and was selected for rear admiral in 1969.
