The program requirements include five courts (Appeal, Macro & Micro Civil, Felonies & Misdemeanors, Family) plus the Common Services and a Training & Development Center. The research into the program, putting in place the ideas of stability, formality and monumentality, associated to the image of the Qatari Rock formations, and the tracing and mapping the city’s old urban fabrics are the main generators that give sense to the project.

URBAN DESIGN

The proposal emphasise the main points of the original project did in 1953, by Van den Broek & Bakema, solving it weaknesses, by focus more in the resident and visitor experience than in an intrusive architecture. The new program of activities and facilities colonise the roofs of the lower buildings, adding new public areas, and create a new landscape for the residents.

SOCIAL COLLECTIVE HOUSING and PARISH CHURCH

MERO Estudio Orense (Spain) [2007-2008] 8.910 m2 Department of housing, Galicia Regional Government. Consultancy and structure design for 52 social flats in two blocks. The spaces distribution is flexible, allowing the residents to organize the spaces with sliding panels. The structure of both blocks is conceived to pursue this aim; double concrete beams span over 9,5 m length, avoiding any internal bearing structure. Steel supports are joined to the beams by inside collars. The installations run in a compact package between the units. The project maintains an important compromise with a zero emissions design and construction.

Notes: Single family house in a small plot for my sister’s family. The simple program conforms to the habits of the family, making a comfortable home, with useful spaces with the possibility of separate them if necessary. The ground floor is semi underground, and the first floor is a bridge between the garage and the ground floor. The slope of the plot to the south allow to leverage the natural ground insulation and roof garden to insulate the north facade. The excessive sun exposure, in south and west is avoided with simple elements, wooden sunshade and fabric awnings. Simple construction made by load-bearing brick walls and wooden floor structure.
