Elementary grade pupils perform the “Halad” Sinulog 2016
It was the third Sunday of January this year that many of us Cebuanos huddled together in celebrating the “Sinulog” – a dance ritual in honor of the miraculous image of the Sto. Niño. This feast was indeed one the most significant celebrations in Cebu. Basilica Menor del Sto. Nino and the rest of the neighboring churches were busy plotting each day’s activity. One of which was a solemn procession which happened the day before the festivity. Religious from different congregations, devotees, and the youth met as they paraded the image. The Sinulog dance moves to the beat of the drums. Dancers wore colorful costumes with beautiful props on them. Sinulog is a dance competition activity whose contenders are from the different school’s division around the province of Cebu. Amidst the noisy gong on the street, and under the heat of the sun, the contenders still managed to dance gracefully because they believed that more than the competition they have performed, their gestures to dance for the miraculous Sto.
Nino is their own “Halad” (an offering ). USPF particularly in Mabini Campus did not join the dance competition, however, the pupils from elementary cannot help but did the Sinulog dance as well, although it was not on the street but inside the school campus. The program was conducted on January 15, 2016 at around 10:00 a.m in the quadrangle were pupils from grades one to six performed their own version of “Halad”a Sinulog dance for Sto. Nino. Each grade level was set and ready because many stage parents were also there to help. Before the dance presentation started, each cheerleader were called at the center and confidently showcased their unique moves. Among the six group performances, only 3 got the awards, namely: Gr.2 ranked as third, Gr.3 ranked second, and Gr.6 got the first place. The program concluded with a merry dance. The pupils, parents or guardians, and the faculty were all invited to perform under One Beat, one Dance, and One Vision.

Grade 2 Communicants receive “Food for the Soul” for the first time
First Holy Communion is the common name for a person’s first reception of the sacrament of the Eucharist. It is the most central and important tradition to Catholicism. First Holy Communion is a Christian ceremony held annually in schools. On March 1, 2016 the USPF Grade Two Pupils in Mabini Campus had their First Holy Communion at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral at around 1:00 p.m. and presided by Msgr. Reuben Labajo. Apart from the said event, a one-day Parents’ Recollection to the parents of the communicants was held and conducted by Sister Sally, from the Daughters of Saint Teresa. Its objective was to help deepen their understanding and appreciation in the Eucharist. The communicants clothing is often white to symbolize purity. The girls wore dresses and a veil attached to
their hair ornaments, while the boys wore black pants and white long sleeve polo with a tie. As the Holy Mass was about to begin, the Elementary Faculty members walked at the center isle then followed by the communicants accompanied by their proud parents. There were some selected parents who were assigned in the mass. The communicants also offered flowers, candles, cash, and in kind during the Offertory. The mass songs were sung by the USPF Children’s Choir. On the last part of the mass, the communicants were given souvenirs and certificates. The ceremony was ended with an action song they have prepared entitled “Christ is our Hope of Glory”. It was indeed a successful rite. The communicants came home with happy faces and hopeful hearts knowing that Christ himself wants them to be the HOPE of the World.

Submit news and feature articles for the USPF Quarterly via publicationsoffice@uspf.edu.ph. The USPF Publications Office is an institutional office whose existence fosters responsible journalism, advances information dissemination, invigorates academic and social discussions, advocates creative innovations, and promotes scientific discoveries through print and electronic versions of traditional and new media. It supervises all publications of the University. The USPF Publications Office core publications include: (1) USPF Quarterly, (2) University Annual, (3) Graduate School BOA, and (4) University Catalog. As a supervising office, it interacts with peripheral publications which consist of various newsletters, journals, manuscripts, and multimedia managed by the respective colleges, schools, departments, centers, and offices of the University. The USPF Publications Office is managed by its Head & Editor-in-Chief who reports directly to the University President. Its logo, designed by USPian alumnus Dr. Gino C. Maderazo, supports the endeavors of the University: The hexagon connotes communication, interfacing, balance, and union. It is found in the natural formation of a honeycomb which suggests the sweetness of cooperation, hard work, and service. Inside each hexagon is a word in Baybayin, one of at least four known pre-Filipino writing scripts, which, if transliterated in Roman alphabet reads three Cebuano Visayan words: “basa” (read), “suwat” (write), “publikar” (publish). The last word “publikar” borrows from the Spanish language as printing and publishing began in the Philippines only with the arrival of the Spanish in the late 1500. The superimposed colors come in three as well. The lighter shade is understanding through reading wherein one formulates ideas. Once ideas are written down they become absolute, hence the darker, more elaborate color. Everything changes into a high definition orange, a metaphor for clarity of expression and freedom, once ideas are published. As all things explained holds a strong Filipino identity, including the various influences throughout history, the quill which stands for the legacy of writing rightfully takes its prominence as a reminder of the publications’ humble past even as it moves and evolves onto the infinite millennia with all its technology and media platforms. *Credits to Norman de los Santos for his relentless work on the Baybayin fonts which can be easily accessed at http://nordenx.blogspot.com/p/downloads.html

Prof. Manikan discusses the Whole Brain Learning System
and lesson plans; (4) Demo Teaching. Details of the significance of the training program is stated by USPF board of trustees chairperson Mrs. Teresita Villa Ponce in her opening remarks: Members of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Alicia Cabatingan, school officials, teachers, friends, Good Morning: I am extremely happy to welcome you to this Phase 2 of our institution-wide program for REPOSITIONING USPF FOR THE 21st CENTURY GLOBAL EDUCATION. This is part of 4 phases which seeks to introduce a system intended to transform the school through defining its desired graduates and articulating its qualities. The precursor of this seminar is a learning session for the Board of trustees of the University which we had last January 23rd & 24th 2015. From the favorable comments,
we realize the University’s need for new insights, an indication of an awakening to a new sense of purpose. Today, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation and the Agustin and Beatriz Jereza Memorial Foundation have launched this joint project to build capability among its people. We know full well that a school canonly be as good as its faculty - that the strength of the school depends in a large part on the strength of its faculty. Having said this, we affirm today the Board of Trustees’ goal to make the University the school of choice in its category by coming out with quality and relevant programs and by harnessing the collective strength of its people to effect this goal. As has been mentioned in several forums, the ASEAN integration is at our doorstep; the effects of the implementation of the K+12 will soon kick in. If we
do not change, we will actually be moving backwards. This morning we have invited again a dear friend of USPF, Professor Cecilia B. Manikan to lead us in this transformation process. She will handhold us as we tread through this arduous but exciting journey of building THE NEW USPF. The end in sight is of course, to form The Ideal USPF Student and Graduate, USPF’s raison d’être - USPF’s reason for being. Prof. Manikan is a senior faculty of the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), the Ateneo Professional Schools, and the Bayan Academy of ABSCBN Foundation. A former full-time faculty of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), she specializes in Education Management, Comparative Education, Arts Management, Strategic Management, and Human Resources Management. As educational consultant, Prof. Manikan, together with her mentor, Dr. Eduardo Morato Jr., pioneered and introduced the outcomes-based, multi-dimensional, multidevelopmental Whole-Brain Learning System to all levels of Philippine education. Prof. Manikan holds an Executive Doctorate in
Educational Leadership from the Development Academy of the Philippines and is a graduate of Master in Business Management from the Asian Institute of Management. She also has finished the doctoral coursework for a Ph.D. In Education. She pursued her Continuing Education in Arts Management in New York University. As an AIM professor, one of the subjects she taught was called Self Mastery and the Arts. One would probably wonder why a business school would have a course such as self-mastery and the arts. It was through selfmastery that a leader can develop, cultivate, and polish the interior strength that enables him to lead his organization effectively. This is an auspicious time to gather together to build THE NEW USPF. It is a time for renewal - a time to have a fresh new start, to dream anew and sail into deeper seas. We take stock of what we are and what we still can become; of what we have done and what we still can do. In this journey, we are not alone. We are fortunate to have Prof. Cecilia B. Manikan as our guide.
