Jereza Memorial Lecture is an annual tradition given in honor of the Grand Old Man on his birth anniversary
he 2016 Don Agustin M. Jereza Memorial Lecture tapped the millennials for topics that reside in the 21st century education and milieu. The lecture is held in the afternoon of the 128th birth anniversary of the Founding Father, the 28th of August at the Theater for the Performing Arts, USPF Lahug campus. Hosted by senior high school principal Dr. Alvin E. Zamora, the lecture opened with the USPF Chorale leading the audience to the singing of the doxology, Pambansang Awit, and the Loyalty Song. Instantaneously, Dr. Venus Empuerto, dean of the school of business and management and co-chairperson of the executive committee for AY 20162017, formally opened and welcomed the
attendees. She implicitly noted that the keynote speakers are the first legacies to speak at the Memorial Lecture. Subsequently, Dr. Odilon A. Maglasang, director for research, planning and development, vibrantly introduced the 1st keynote speaker, Miss Emily Oliva Higwit Barriga, “a USPian alumni legacy, one who is a direct bloodline of a true blooded USPian having inherited the core values and upbringing of a USPian father.” Miss Barriga is daughter to USPian high school alumnus class of ’75, the late artist Artemio Rosales Barriga and wife Emily Higwit Barriga, an Ireland-based nurse general. She tackled the topic The Animation Revolution: Transformative Impact and Contribution to Society with a brief introduction to the basics of
2
animation and its evolution. She further discussed the countless benefits of animation utilization in entertainment, socio-politics, education, engineering, architecture, and medicine. Miss Barriga also went on to argue the negligible support given to the animation industry in the Philippines, the struggles of budding animators, and the hope that Philippines will have its name known in the animation industry in the future. She challenged the audience, “If Don Agustin stood up for what he believed in, about education and turning dreams into
reality, then we should too.” She finished the lecture with her reason for going into animation which is founded on the strong influence of her artist father, and concluded with her capstone project. (View Miss Barriga’s PREZIntation here: https://prezi.com/-tva-qonnbzk/theanimation-revolution) Dr. Helmer Montejo, director for information and marketing and the chairperson of the executive committee of AY 2016-2017, introduced the 2nd keynote speaker, Mr. Ryan Gajudo
Macasero, “a young journalist whose bloodline can be traced here at USPF.” Mr. Macasero is son to USPian high school alumni retired seafarer Edwin Colina Macasero and US-based nurse Editha Gajudo Macasero, crowned Miss USP in the late 70s. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations minor in Political Science from California State University, East Bay, USA. A regional correspondent of Rappler-Cebu, Mr. Macasero engaged the
3
audience with the topic Digital Media: Breakthroughs and Challenges and briefly gave a background on the evolution of news from print to online. He further discussed the uniqueness of digital media: editorial independence, the fusion of broadcast and new technology, and the collaboration of veteran journalists and young digital natives in producing quality journalism. He interestingly expounded on the multi-task of a digital media person that works as print, television and online reporter all in one and revealed that smartphone is every multimedia journalist’s secret weapon. Additionally, he discussed the various challenges to journalism in the Philippines including infrastructure which includes access to technology and internet and as well as societal challenges such as libel, media corruption, intimidation and violence. He concluded his lecture with a challenge to join him and Rappler in the #NoPlaceForHate, a move that dismisses hate posts and encourages responsible online postings.
Thereafter, a tribute performance in honor of the Founding Father ensued. USPian AB Music alumnus Jake Juleous Bryan “The Show Violinist Gacang, multi-winner at the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) 2016 in Long Beach, California rendered the audience in awe with a surprising entrance away from the limelight, playing the violin right in the control booth area, far across the stage with his signature hyperactive moves. Afterward, University president Dr. Alicia P. Cabatingan awarded the plaques and tokens to the keynote speakers, Miss Barriga and Mr. Macasero, with the assistance of vice president for academics
Dr. Agapito Clabesillas and vice president for administration Engr. Antonio Lapincao, Jr. USPF also awarded the tribute performer Mr. Gacang a plaque of appreciation handed by University president Dr. Alicia P. Cabatingan with the assistance of the college of arts and sciences dean Mr. Charles Roy Baguio and P20,000 token handed by finance director Mrs. Rosalina Jereza Sepulveda for the prestige and glory Mr. Gacang has given to the University as a USPian artist. An effervescent dance interlude is presented by the Bidlisiw Dance Troupe, whereafter the audience is set to receive the usual closing remarks. However,
4
that was not the case. The brief vote of thanks given by chief information officer Mr. Lester B. Gastala is followed by his introduction of the PRISAA champion singer Miss Fe Flores who sang “The Prayer”, a first of its kind as a vote of thanks in the history of the Don Agustin M. Jereza Memorial Lecture. What truly brought the house down was the astonishment and disbelief of the audience when the University CIO Mr. Gastala himself joined the lady songbird and made his debut on the USPian stage like the Italian classical crossover tenor Bocelli—a grand finale! Cheers to Don Agustin, an inspiring father to us all!

USPF invested 9.1 million for 440 solar panels installation which started in Aug 2016 and set for completion in midNov 2016. The pre-installation feasibility study yielded an almost P300,000 savings per month once solar energy powers up the entire Don Agustin Jereza Hall. The USPF Don Agustin Jereza Hall a.k.a “Nursing Building” which houses the College of Nursing (CON), College of Computer Studies (CCS), College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA), Senior High School (SHS) and SEED Center and equip with facilities including an as-needed elevator going up to the 4th floor, Speech Lab 2, and Theater for the Performing Arts is the highest cost-consuming building of all the USPF infrastructures in both Lahug and Mabini campuses. Focused on the institutional strategy of “transforming USPF into a dynamic high-tech, high-touch learning organization in keeping with global standards in education and workplace
requirements,” USPF partners with Sasonbi for the design and construction needs of the solar power installation. Sansobi, Inc., a Manila-based company, considers the building roof, sun position, and the monthly electrical consumption in the drone-assisted feasibility study prior the installation. USPF and Sansobi work with Canadian Solar of Canada for the solar panels and as well as ABB and Schneider of Germany for the SMA inverter and breakers. In retrospect, the solar project is intricately discussed among the USPF board of trustees and is raised at the Strategic Planning and WBLS training with Prof. Cecilia B. Manikan in the early part of 2015. The solar project is a collaborative work of the office of the VP for administration headed by Engr. Antonio Lapingcao, Jr., the office of the physical plant and facilities director Mr. Michael Mercado with Mr. John Michael Lim, and procurement manager Mr. Bryan Jereza; the office of the finance director Mrs. Rosalina Jereza Sepulveda; and, the college of engineering and architecture (CEA)
