he University of Southern Philippines Foundation board of trustees, corporate members, senior managers, and select middle managers with University consultant Dr. Cecilia B. Manikan gathered for the development of the strategic plan on October 31, 2016 at the ancestral home of University founder Don Agustin M. Jereza now popularly known as Circa 1900 Casa Dos in Sanjercas Ville Ext. Rd., Lahug, Cebu City. In retrospect, the University unveiled the new vision, mission, and goals at the 67th Charter Day celebration on July 8, 2016 at the USPF Theater for the Performing Arts, Lahug campus. Several drastic changes occurred prior the unveiling: training on the whole brain learning system (WBLS) with the outcomes based education (OBE), ICT developments, and infrastructures innovation. Along with the changes, a wellplanned strategy to meet the requirements of the new VMG is inevitably needed. The whole-day planning focused on developing the key result areas, performance indicators, and strategies which cascaded from the University’s three main objectives: (1) set new standards and paradigms in 21st century education; (2) empower people toward self-actualization for better quality of life; and, (3) maintain a viable and sustainable organization. Active participants at the strategic planning session included the USPF board

A DAY TO REMEMBER. “You name it; we did it, all in one day!” USPF Elementary School-Lahug successfully catered the Science, Math, Araling Panlipunan, Trick or Treat and Rosary celebrations in one, last October 24, 2016. Talented and creative teachers and pupils harmoniously had time to prepare and made things happened with the support of the parents. Let us express our sincere gratitude to all the departments, offices and classrooms who welcomed and generously shared their treats to our pupils on their colourful costumes during the trick or treat. Representatives from different levels seriously faced the “Battle of Brains” dynamically. Pupils possessing youthful vigour and talents, not just in

quiz bowls but also in acting (great Mathematicians were portrayed and enacted lively), in writing compositions (future writers and composers presented their original pieces in Math jingle and poems), and in dancing (pupils danced gracefully representing different countries and Mother Earth). All worth it! Pupils were given certificates and tokens as recognition on how actively they participated and excelled in all the activities. Great job kids! All worries and hectic schedules during the preparations are paid off. Happiness and sweet smiles of each faces during the celebration was a big prize that no one can buy. Kudos to everyone! which is actively participated by USPian pupils using the English language and the Sinugbuanong Binisaya on the 2nd of December. The one-day annual event culminating activity showcased the pupils’ talents and skills in singing, dancing, theater arts and other social skills. It was a memorable event. Everybody was excited to share different stories and the creative things that they prepared. USPF at the Forefront of New and Emerging Technologies

T

he quest for an efficient, effective and secured ICT infrastructure was the main factor that triggered the deployment of an unbreakable university Internet and the strategically located WiFi Access Points that provided accessibility 24/7. The project is called IRCOS (infrastructure, rehabilitation, consolidation, optimization, and security). Figure 1 shows the RISK and overall complexity of the major concerns that USPF has to mitigate. It also shows the state of USPF ICT infrastructure – a graphical representation of the result of the ICT assessment conducted by CIO Mr. Lester B. Gastala.. Solution. Peplink for Unbreakable Internet and Aerohive for Controller-less Wifi Access Points Who Uses Peplink and Aerohive? In the Philippines, USPF is the 1st University to deploy Peplink. It is also the 1st academic institution in the that utilize a controller-less WiFi infrastructure through the deployment of Aerohive. Most universities use on-premise controllers to manage their Wifi Access Points , thus allowing an additional cost of ownership. For USPF, the ICT department utilized a pure breed cloud-based solution used by leading companies and organizations around the world. Aerohive Benefits: • Simplified and unified network policies • Provision of users registered to USPF WiFi avoid misuse and abuse • Centralized monitoring of access point devices • Teachers can bring their laptop and access GAFE anywhere anytime around the campus • This initiative resulted to a seamless Internet connection 24/7 with an average of 300+ unique users everyday. Notably, it is commended by accreditor Engr. Gabriel for a job well done during the accreditation visit.

Peplink and Aerohive users in the Philippines and around the world Peplink Benefits: • proven industry-leading load balancing engine • boosts network data rates, reliability, and flexibility while slashing connectivity costs as Peplink’s load balancing engine distributes USPF traffic of up to 3 internet links and routes data using 7 intelligent algorithms • adds up to high speeds and rock-solid

dependability at a savings of up to 90% compared to solutions built on traditional WAN and other expensive links Scalable, Affordable, Speed. Using SpeedFusion VPN bonding technology, USPF is able to combine multiple connections. This enables the university to access internet services at greater speeds than you could achieve with a single link, at a fraction of what it would cost using traditional WAN alone. Using Peplink technology, USPF is able to increase our bandwidth by almost 200%. 99.999% Reliability Without the Cost. Because the links are combined together into a single SDWAN, each link USPF adds increases its reliability. The approach has provided connectivity resilience for USPF at a fraction of what it would cost using traditional WAN alone. Overall Results - (Strategy and Value). USPF need not invest on pricey multiple primary lease line (MPLS) but can combine cheaper DSL (cheaper internet lines) forming a big pipe at less cost Reduced Operational burden. USPF is now capable to manage and appropriate bandwidth where and when it is needed the most. It is ensured the continuity of curriculum delivery through the use of unbreakable internet. Reduced Time to Value. Easy to configure and deploy resulting to maximum efficiency, effectiveness and secured user experience Incidental benefits. (1) Results a year after the implementation of IRCOS: • The 1st unbreakable university internet in the Philippines • The 1st cloud-based wifi controller-less network architecture implementation in the Philippines Figure 3. Published by Speedfusion Networks on SunStar Cebu , Aug 28 issue. (2) Peplink Certified Engineer Examination Successful Examinees. USPF successfully passed with flying colors the Peplink Online Examination for Certified Engineers. The list of successful passers are as follows: • Mr. Lester Gastala – Certified Engineer (Validation Code: Zuq4mfsNL7) • Engr. Benjamin De la Cerna – Certified Engineer (Validation Code: MB4D7EtL03) • USPF is the 1st University in Cebu with Certified Engineers. The certified passers’ results are 85% and 90% versus the passing rate of 70%. These are just some of the innovative efforts of USPF living up to its Vision of becoming a 21st century transformative learning environment of global lifelong learners. “You have only seen the tip of the iceberg” Mr. Gastala added.

USPF claims 1st University in Cebu with frontrunner bandwidth

T

he University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) thru the Information & Communications Technology (ICT) department in partnership with PLDT successfully activates the 600Mbps bandwidth on November 17, 2016. PLDT informs USPF chief information officer Mr. Lester B. Gastala that USPF is the 1st University in the province of Cebu with the biggest and fastest bandwidth compared to other universities. The existing combined bandwidth of three (3) telecommunications partners totalled only to 30Mbps. With the recent boost in bandwidth, USPF now holds a staggering 630Mbps ---at ZERO ADDITIONAL COST TO EXISTING SUBSCRIPTION! According to CIO Gastala, “the new operational capability of USPF will definitely translate to end user satisfaction as we are preparing ‘in full speed’ the integration of ICT to curriculum and instruction as directed by our new VMO.” He adds, “Trustee Sta. Ana recommends we make use of this new capability on publications and marketing efforts to entice more enrolees.”
