letter from the editor

H

ope everyone had a wonderful Pride Month and a happy Juneteenth. In this issue we will highlight the work of many young talented photographers and creatives such as Ryan Hampton, from Dallas,Texas, with his series titled “JUICY” and Arianna Bard’s photoshoot titled “Red is for Love”. We also look back at the great black creatives before us such as the wonderful singer Sade, in which the cover shoot with Cienna reenacting the great musicians classic photos is showcasing. Cienna is an afro studies student at Howard working to get her doctorate so she is nothing short of greatness so she portrays the singer by not only her beauty but also by her mind and spirt, truly both remarkable woman that I idolize. The Premiere leadership is back at it just being icons with a shoot I creatively directed entitled “Rich Kids”. The concept of the shoot was just to show some beautiful black people looking boujee and having fun and I believe the leadership team nailed it and continue to show me why I hold them to a higher standard than the average creator, truly all ICONS living. This summer we have seen many artists we haven’t heard from in a while like Steve Lacy, Tyler the Creator, and Goldlink. I take a deep dive into Tylers project IGOR because it was such a shift in the artists discography and sound, one of my favorite projects of 2019 thus far. I also had the opportunity to be in a documentary titled “The New Black”, directed by Asha(she’s been a busy woman). This documentary is about 4 creatives that have the most stand out styles at Howard. It was a humbling experience and I recommend if you haven’t watched it please watch it; just look up the new black on youtube you won’t regret. During the making of this issue a lot has happened outside the creative world such as police brutality on the rise(as usual at this point) and the massacre that is happening in Sudan. In this issue we touch upon many issues that are happening within the black

8

community with the shoot titled “Amerikkka the Beautiful” creatively directed by Asha. The shoot is not meant to be offensive to people in these situations but to bring awareness to these problems that often a blind eye is turned such as homelessness, domestic abuse, and human trafficking. I would like to address the massacre briefly because we don’t touch upon it in the issue, but this is a pressing topic. Innocent peaceful protesters in Sudan are being slaughtered by their own government. It all started early April when protesters and the military overthrough the dictator of the country leaving the military to take control. The protesters are still protesting because they want a democracy not a military or dictatorship rule. America and its Allies are not only turning a blind eye to the country but are funding the military that is murdering its people. In order to take action call your representatives, spread awareness(don’t let people forget), and donate to reliable organizations. hope you all enjoy this issue!! This is our 3rd magazine which I am grateful for and our most evolved issue yet with more of a magazine feel. I am proud of this Summer Issue and also at the numbers ouwvvvr last two issues were putting up by getting 700+ reads for each issue. Thank you for the continuous support as we continue to make culture and bring light to artist and creatives that will shift the culture we have set.

music editor picks Story by Jessica Daniels

Anger Management - Rico Nasty (Hip-Hop)

When I Get Home - Solange (ALT) This album came at such a pivotal moment in my life so my appreciation for it can’t even be properly put in words. The lyrics holds just as much weight as the production does and that was extremely important to me. Solange gives us a deeper look into her head, as she utilizes repetition in songs like “Things I Imagined” “Jerrod” and “Dreams” to show us how repeating things can brings us stability. Finding balance and returning to your roots, to whatever home is for you is the message of “When I Get Home. ” This album is only 39 minutes long and it literally feels like a lifetime. I listened to it both in order and on shuffle and I can safely say the order of the album doesn’t even matter, it’s that good. The features alone show how Solange can take several pieces and create a cohesive work of art. Playboi Carti, Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, The Dream, Gucci Mane, and Steve Lacy are just a few of the incredible people involved in this album, just further proof that Solange is not only a great artist but she is one of the greatest collaborators of our time.

46

This project is an emotional journey. Rico begins in the depths of her anger, layering bar after bar in what seems like one long scream. “Cold” is certainly not safe to listen to in the car, you will crash. KennyBeats has mastered his sound, and “Cheat Code is a showcase of his unique blending of rock and hip hop. I almost cried when the song “Hatin” started. The sample ( “Dirt of Your Shoulder” by Jay Z) proves that she can handle a traditional hip hop sound. Overall, Anger Management is evidence that Rico Nasty has the range, which not only makes her stand out but it elevates her higher than A LOT of male counterparts, specifically. She changes her flow on every single song. It’s going to be very difficult to try and steal her sound, because it’s always evolving. I’m gonna just go ahead and say she’s one of the coldest female rappers of our generation. The album takes a positive and introspective shift that I didn’t expect. By the final song, it is evident that she approaching internal peace. Amongst all the projects dropped this month, I was most excited for this one and it did not disappoint at all.

Ventura - Anderson Paak (R&B)

WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? - Billie Eilish (ALT) This album was my first encounter with Billie Eilish outside of “Ocean Eyes” and I will say that I was impressed. The album has a general spooky feel which fits perfect with her aesthetic. Because of her aesthetic, I thought I knew what the album would sound like before listening to it, and was I wrong. This project is really layered. The songs range from a pop radio-single type feel, to dark. emotional ballads. Her and her older brother co write and produce her music which is really cool. Because there are limited people involved with this project, Eillish was able to create a cohesive sound, though the album pays homage to different genres and utilizes several instruments. She mixes acoustic, and classical sounds with electronic beats. “Xanny” has an insane baseline that is met with soft vocals and piano. It is clear that Billie Eilish is successful at achieving duality. “I love you” is my favorite song on the album. This album is the perfect premiere of both her style and vocal abilities. However, (some people may be mad but it needs to be said) Lorde walked so Billie Eilish could run.

First of all, I would like to say Anderson .Paak is a musical genius, one of the greatest in his genre right now. Now that that has been established, I feel a little less bad about saying that this album wasn’t my favorite. I had it pre-saved because I absolutely LOVED “Oxnard” so I was super excited to see what would come after such a good album. I know that the two albums are supposed to be polar opposites of each other, though they were created at the same time. This one is supposed to be really smooth, “pretty” in .Paak’s words. It’s definitely smooth and pretty, with a lot of bass and horns, proving that Anderson Paak will always be committed to soul. If I could some up the experience in a few words I would say that the album feels like a familiar walk in your neighborhood. It’s a sound you expect, an experience you know really well. I think that’s why I was a little disappointed at first listen, the album feels too familiar. I will note that .Paak definitely expanded his vocal ability on this project and the background vocals definitely stood out. This album was a monumental collaborative effort, containing the likes of Andre 3000, Brandy, Jazmine Sullivan, and Smokey Robinson. “Make it Better” however, is special. Definitely a feel good song, perfect for the approaching summer. Overall, this album was good but it wasn’t anything short of what I expected it to be.

The Sleeper Must Awaken Story by Jean Jackson

A

merican Science fiction novelist Frank Herbert once said, “Without new experiences, something inside of us sleeps. The sleeper must awaken.” This quote resonated with me immediately after I saw it. Without meeting new people, experiencing new places, and learning about different cultures, we aren’t truly living. I’ve found that once you put yourself out there and open your heart to the world, you will gain a type of contentment that is almost impossible to explain. One thing that I have learned in my twenty years of life, is that this world is more complex than I could have ever imagined. Surprisingly, when I came to this realization, I

Igor: an essay on a love story Story by Kyle Mells

T

yler, The Creator dropped his 5th studio album on May 17th titled: IGOR. This album has 12 songs with guest appearances from Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, Solange, Kanye West, and Jerrod Carmichael, along with backing vocals from Santigold, Jessy Wilson, La Roux, CeeLo Green, Charlie Wilson, Slowthai, and Pharrell. This project has received nationwide acclaim by debuting at number 1 on the US Billboard 200 beating out DJ Khaled’s Father of Asahd. Like all of Tyler’s albums it was all wrote and produced by him. Like his clear influencers, Pharrell and Kanye, Tyler has shown that he is a talented rapper produce. Some of the songs on this project we can hear the impact that Kanye and Pharrell have on Tyler. This article will not be about Tyler, The Creator’s past projects or the history of Tyler. This will be solely about IGOR. Like Tyler’s disclaimer he put out before the release of the album; I am only going to critique and explain my take on IGOR as a stand-alone project.

IGOR is a romance story, his famed baby voice that suits the song very well. repeating “my loves gone”. Then what comes next is the aftermath of a toxic relationship, with Tyler completely out of love with his once romantic partner with the song I DON’T LOVE YOU ANYMORE and then Tyler asking for closer with the track ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?, which is one of the slower songs of the album. This song was one of the most melodic of the album and a great ending to the story. The album as a whole was a work of art and a stroke of genius from the flower boy himself. I can say confidently that Flower Boy was the album that established Tyler as an artist that needs to be taken seriously and that can give us a story but IGOR cemented that; put him in a top tier of artistry with the likes of Frank Ocean. The Project is a need to listen, 9/10. Thank you Tyler for a wonderful project and cant wait to see where you go after this.

This year the theme was celebrating the Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, “Camp: Notes on fashion”. Camp is an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value, but in Susan Sontag’s famous essay on the camp aesthetic she described as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” Exaggeration of the absurd is what most celebrities came to the Gala in some were chic others not so much. Stuffed Sweet Potato This meal is whatever you want it to be: breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a snack, like you. Anything you need it to be, it’ll be. To make it, you’re just going to stab the sweet potato over and over and over again with a knife or a fork. The more you stab, the better it’ll cook (please don’t miss). Then you just want to smooth on some butter, wrap it up in aluminum foil and leave it in the oven (375 degrees) for an hour. If you want your sweet potato softer, just leave it in the oven for longer, but be sure to check on it from time to time. Once it’s out, split it open down the middle and fill it up with your favorite toppings. Here’s a few recommendations: Butter, brown, sugar and cinnamon. Coconut yogurt, fresh fruit, almond butter, granola, and honey Paired with jasmine rice and your choice of cooked veggies for a fuller meal.

summer tips: Bathing Suits for Your Body Type Story by Shainya Frazier

Summer time has finally arrived, and that means pools, beaches, and traveling to fun outings that give us a reason to purchase the cutest bathing suits! Summer is a time for relaxation, regrouping, and refueling as we have fun and live our best lives. It can also be a time where, in many cases, we don’t necessarily pick the proper bathing suits for our specific body types. Our body isn’t really appealing to us in the bathing suit and we don’t know why. But the secret is all in how you pick the proper bathing suit that is unique to you and plays off of your best assets. There is a huge range of bathing suit types and styles, and today we’ll help you figure out the best ones for you. With these tips, you’ll be equipped to find the perfect bathing suits to accentuate your body in all the right places, and emphasize what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Small chest (Petite Women) For women who weren’t as blessed in the chest department, you have a little bit more movement and range with the types of swimsuits can purchase. You need a supportive suit with padding that gives you a little help in that department and gives the illusion of fuller breasts if you’d like. You can do ruffles or fun, flirty patterns and colors that are busy yet add enhancement to your overall look and small frame. Bathing suit tops that are strappy, have a plunging neckline, or one-shouldered are especially helpful for this body type.

Bigger breasts

Straight/Athletic figure For this body type, suits that play up a curvy figure and have less coverage can leave you feeling more confident than ever. Broad shoulders or a boxy upper body, a suit that brings attention to the sides/ waist to give the illusion of curves is what you’re aiming for. Cut outs, high waist bottoms, and bold prints can create this illusion. Cut outs add dimension to straighter silhouettes. You can also just opt for any suit that makes you feel comfortable, as you don’t necessarily have to balance proportions. Having this body type gives you room to play with textures, patterns and colors, so be adventurous and bold!

No one likes being at the beach or pool and feeling like your suit isn’t giving you the support you need. For women with bigger chests, more supportive bikinis or suits are the way to go. This means that bathing suit tops with underwire, tight bands or trustworthy adjustable straps are essential. You can experiment with wearing the top’s straps as a halter, straight, or crisscrossed for comfort and reliability. Higher back suits, such as in strapless one pieces or off the shoulder tops with bands, give you the comfort of knowing those girls aren’t going anywhere.

85

Back Fat (Curvy Women)

Trends that are In!

Knowing the right tips for curvier body types can aid you in balancing your proportions and create the illusion of a shape that would be more flattering to you. Feeling self conscious about your tummy and thicker features doesn’t mean you should shy away from cute bathing suits you want. Long sleeve bathing suits have been brought back on another level. This trendy bathing suit type helps hide uncomfortable back fat and helps give the illusion of a smaller figure. You can also choose to emphasize your figure with a bold bathing suit, like the holographic one below. Off the shoulder tops tone down the arms and shoulders, and pairing this with high waist bottoms gives you the combination you need to feel sexy while highlighting your shape and curves.

Staying on trend is important when determining new bathing suit types that could help you feel more comfortable in your body. Right now, simple vibrant hues and colors are a fresh alternative to basic neutrals and can make any skin color pop, especially darker tones. Brighter colors are a given for the summer, and add to the flirty and feminine feel we are trying to capture. Black creates a slimming illusion and is perfect for when you want to opt for a simple yet cute swim suit. You can also mix and match your bathing suits or keep them simple and cohesive. Long-sleeve suits even help shape more petite body types. Lastly, don’t be afraid to experiment with other swimsuit types, because it might be surprisingly fitting for you. We are forever evolving with hopes to eliminate stereotypes of a set standard of beauty regarding body types. These tips are a guide, so keep our tips in mind, but also shop for what you like and what makes you feel beautiful. You can just go with a bathing suit that speaks to you and work with what your mom gave you! Having the bathing suit that fits your perfectly unique body can assist you in feeling beautiful and powerful in your own way, shape and size. Most of all, it is essential to know that the best way to embrace bathing suit season is by understanding that all body types are beautiful, and promoting positivity that helps all women feel sexy, comfortable, and confident.

She wanted a way to support her friends in their artistic journey, and also a way to show that Black people have always and continue to make huge impacts in the creative world. SiKK is meant to be a platform where Black (and other minority) creatives can come and be recognized for all of the hard work that they do. she is not yet sure exactly what SiKK will be doing in the future because they’ve only just started, but our goal will always be to support and inspire marginalized groups to express themselves with anything that we do.

Last Look

Pricela for gucci My first runway job was for Gucci!!! That sounds crazy to say or to even think. I was so exited to fly out to Rome for the casting. I didn’t know what to expect, I’ve never even had a casting before. Photoshoots with two big brands last summer and a few small ones. But none of the names were this big. The casting phase was nerve racking and very long. The first day was the actual casting. Headshots, walk, wait and a few people got sent home. My agent called and told me that I was supposed to stay. That didn’t mean I was in the show but basically in the next round. The next days were fittings, more people were getting sent home. I was making friends and trying to enjoy every evening with them like it was my last day there. Most people around me were used to this, I wasn’t but it was nice hearing advice from them. Then finally I got confirmed for rehearsal! I was going to walk in the show. At rehearsal I was supper nervous and did a mistake. But at the show I tried to concentrate to breathe, I couldn’t look left and right to see who was looking at me, which I’m thankful for because that would’ve just made me more nervous. In the show, I did not make one mistake, I wasn’t even as nervous as during rehearsal. And when it was over I was rushed by positive energy and thoughts. I’m so excited for every opportunity that might come my way after this one. And I’m so happy that I got to experience this. 96

We are so proud of you Pricela here at Premiere . It was amazing to see you grow; not only as a model but also as a person and as a creative . We wish you more success and more shows to come. Forever a family . More life more evreything.
