Programming

Creating an exceptional tennis program is multi-faceted. It involves understanding member needs, o ering a variety of tennis activities, maintaining top-notch facilities, and employing skilled sta . This article outlines a few of the key steps to developing a tennis program that stands out, ensuring your program remains a preferred choice among your current program participants and future participants. Much of this information relates to member clubs, but can be adapted for other uses.

Understanding Needs and Preferences

The foundation of any great tennis program lies in its alignment with the needs and preferences of those that will be participating in the program. In my world it would be the members at the club I work for. We start by conducting formal and informal member surveys and interviews to gain insights into what they value most in a tennis program. Are they looking for competitive play, social interaction, or tness-oriented sessions? Analyzing demographic data can also provide valuable information, allowing you to tailor your o erings to suit various age groups, skill levels, and interests. This step ensures that your tennis program resonates with your members, encouraging active participation and engagement.

Designing a Diverse Program O ering

Diversity in program o erings is key to catering to the broad spectrum of member interests and skill levels within your club. Develop a comprehensive range of activities, from instructional clinics and private lessons to competitive leagues and casual social tennis events. Ensure that there are o erings for all skill levels, including specialized programs for juniors, beginners, and advanced players. This variety not only keeps the program dynamic and inclusive but also provides pathways for player development and progression. Many year’s ago I was at a thriving tennis community but noticed every time a season ended the courts would become empty and slow! Players did not have regular social groups to play with, they relied on their team captains to schedule all of their play. We then worked to balance out our programming to keep people playing through various social programs in between team seasons. This focus led to a more balanced program and growth in participation of our entire program.

Hiring and Training Quali ed Sta

The quality of your tennis program is heavily dependent on the expertise and enthusiasm of your sta . Focus on hiring certi ed tennis professionals with a passion for the game and a talent for coaching players of all ages and abilities.

Programming continued...

Once onboard, provide regular professional development opportunities to keep your team updated on the latest coaching techniques, trends in tennis, and customer service skills. A well-trained, motivated sta will be instrumental in delivering a high-quality program and retaining member interest. At Long Cove Club our top focus is on the member experience. We strive every day to exceed the expectations of our members through great customer service both on and o the court.

Facility Management and Maintenance

Top-tier tennis facilities are a critical component of a successful program. Regular maintenance of tennis courts ensures they are in optimal condition, providing a safe and enjoyable playing environment. Keeping your facilities in excellent condition and easily accessible will signi cantly enhance the overall member experience. We have extensive court maintenance procedures for both our clay tennis courts and hard pickleball courts. Regular cleaning of the surface of our hard courts to keep the colors of the court vibrant and stain free. Our clay courts take daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly schedules to keep the courts consistently in championship conditions.

Marketing and Promotion

E ective marketing and promotion are essential to attract members to your tennis program. Utilize a variety of channels, including social media, club newsletters, digital signage and bulletin boards, to highlight your o erings. At Long Cove Club our marketing for programs is considerably easier as we only market our programs to current members. We utilize all of the above outlets to get the information out to the current members including those that live in the community but do not currently take advantage of our programming.

Conclusion

Building a great tennis or as in my case now, a racquets program requires a thoughtful and member-centric approach, from understanding your audience to delivering diverse and high-quality o erings. By focusing on these key steps and continually seeking feedback for improvement, your club’s tennis or racquets program can become a thriving hub of activity, engagement, and community. Our goal at Long Cove Club is not to just create tennis or pickleball players, but to truly create a community in which members can come to our Sports Center to exercise, compete, socialize, and develop meaningful relationships with their neighbors and friends.

Focus

During my 2023 season, I made it my goal to focus on every point during tennis matches. It was a di cult task. Being mentally engaged on every point is like reading a 500 page book in one sitting. Tennis is no di erent because you know that eventually there will be a distraction. I was playing a practice match against one of my buds. Score is 0-0 in the 2nd set. I am walking o the bench to get ready to start. As I walked, a random thought came to mind. I caught myself out of focus, as my friend tossed the ball to serve. I left it to instincts to put the ball back in play, but it was a weak return. I lost the point 0-15, so he started o with the lead. The thought took me away from preparing, which ultimately led to 30- 40 and him holding serve.

I asked myself, how can I maintain focus on every point? I need to be practical about this, I need to put myself in a position where every moment, I am engaged with the match and not my random thoughts, emotions, or the pickleball noise. I started to understand the point system a little more and this is what I got.

0-0 Always play to win this point. You want to get ahead in a game.

(15-0) (15-15) (30 -15) (40-15)

Play the basic strategy

Serve +1 Pattern Play

Attack the backhand

Challenge their consistency

Challenge their movement

(0-15) (0-30) (30-30) (30-40) (40-30) Ad out or Ad in CONSISTENCY! Or what one of my buddies would say “COOK’EM”

Play high percentage shots until they break or you have an opportunity to attack.

Mental focus and toughness in sports is similar to meditation. It takes time to develop the habit. Good luck!

Chalkless Grip Enhancer Review: A Tennis Player's Advantage

As a tennis player, maintaining a rm grip on your racquet is key to powerful strokes and condent play. I recently tested out Chalkless Grip Enhancer, a mess-free alternative to traditional chalk, to see if it could enhance my game.

Pros:

• Clean and Convenient: Forget messy chalk residue on your hands, clothes, and tennis bag. Chalkless is invisible and leaves minimal residue, making it a welcome change for players who compete at pristine courts.

• Long-lasting: Unlike traditional chalk that needs constant reapplication, a small amount of Chalkless goes a long way. You can focus on your game without worrying about mid-match grip touch-ups. For me, it easily lasted an entire three set match.

• Potentially Reduced Sweat: While not a substitute for sweatbands, some users report that Chalkless helps with sweat absorption, providing a drier feel on the grip.

Overall:

The Chalkless Grip Enhancer is a great option for tennis players who prioritize a clean and convenient solution. It's a perfect choice for playing at courts with restrictions on chalk use or for those who dislike messy hands. Chalkless o ers long-lasting grip and a potentially drier feel, allowing you to stay focused on your game. For more information on Chalkless Grip Enhancer, visit their website at www.chalkless.com.
