USS COLUMBIA NEWSLETTER SHAKEDOWN CREW REPORTING Volume 1, Issue 2
Quote of the month “Resistance is futile”.
Star Trek Online launched Feb 2, 2010.
February 2010
SHAKEDOWN HAS BEGUN! This is an official communication to let you know that the USS Columbia is a Correspondence chapter in Shakedown Cruise.
The storyline of Star Trek Online begins thirty years after the movie Star Trek Nemesis, entering an era, which has yet to be explored. Now, the Federation and the Klingons are at war with each other, and the Romulans, the Dominion, and several other races are just waiting to attack. Even the Borg are back, and back with a vengeance. As a Starfleet Captain, it seems that there will be plenty of missions on several different fronts to stay busy.
Your official date of launching will be January 23, 2010. As a new chapter, I highly recommend that you download a copy of the START 2007 Manual. This manual will guide you through your journey from launching to commissioning. It can be found in the documents section on the SFI web site. Also Monthly Status Reports (MSR) are due on the first of each month. *NOTE* - I will make the Official Notice to the Starfleet List 24 hours from now (9:00 pm 1/24). This will allow your Regional Coordinator to announce your launching on the regional list if applicable. If there is anything I can help you with please ask.

Online meeting notes BY COMM JASON SCHRECK
1. We talked about the ship's status that our paperwork has been submitted to fleeet and we should recieve launch orders soon. OFFICIALLY LAUCHED JAN 23. 2010 2. Constitution and bylaws- it was agreed the command staff will hold several online meetings in the near future though all members are welcome to go through the constitution and bylaws piece by piece and decide what to keep, eliminate, or alter. As part of this the promotion system was discussed. It was agreed that new members under 16 will hold cadet ranks till they turn 16 and will then fall under the regular rank structure. Promotions will be by combination of points and time in grade. 3 years in grade will gain an automatic promotion. Or once a crewman accumulates enough points for promotion whichever comes first. The required points will be decided at a later date during one of the first constitution and bylaws meeting. New members 16 years old or older will begin as a crewman recruit and either work up through the enlisted ranks or can become an officer by taking OTS 3. Role playing possibilities were also discussed. We agreed the ship's primary mission was as a deep space explorer. A set date has not yet been determined for the first role playing session. 4. Ship's motto- it was decided that motto ideas will be submitted for the next newsletter and a vote taken to determine the winner. Please submit thses no later than February 15 along with other articles for the newsletter. These were the main points discussed. Any questions should be addressed to myself or Lt Commander davis

THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE BY LT CMDR RANDY DAVIS
Our first month in our Shakedown cruise is almost over and we have a looong way to go. My first attempts at recreating the Next Geveration uniform came out better than expected. I will try the Original seriest uniform next and as soon as I feel confident, I will make Uniform shirts for the crew at material cost only. I have included the first lesson of the Vulcan language here in the newsletter on how to pronoun the letters of the Vulcan alphabet. I will continue to add a lesson to each newsletter. I will add these to the website as soon as the new and permanent web site is created. I have also temporarily stopped the Klingon language lessons online until the decision for the new website is made. I have also started playing Star Trek Online (an addictive little thing) and will offer my shipmates free trials as they become available to me and I hope anyone else with the game will do the same. Feel free to contact me anytime rld.sfi@insightbb.com
FROM THE COMMANDING OFFICER BY COMM JASON SHRECK
Well here it is our first newsletter since our official launch. First off, i want to say good work to everyone so far. We have done a lot and we have grown we have now reached 21 members total. Some are more active than others are but we have a growing group. Among these new members, we also have our first cadet members. I have started sending out the list of department positions to new members this is the list provided by our mother ship so departments are getting more members. By the time this is published the command staff will have had its first meeting i hope to have our points and promotion system as well as rank structure nailed down as well as get some work done on the constitution and bylaws. I have also submitted our first MSR report to fleet so we are well on our way. I am hoping our numbers will continue to grow in the future and i hope the rest of our mission goes as smoothly as the beginning has. If anyone has any suggestions, comments, problems etc please feel free to contact me at LB206@aol.com. My ready room door is always open and I am always open to constructive criticism. That's it for this month. Live Long and Prosper.

The Overseas Coupon program serves military families by assisting you to forward "manufacturer's coupons" to overseas military bases. These bundles of coupons are placed on tables, at the PX and Commissary, or handed out for use by military members and families on base. This helps the family save valuable dollars and stretch their budget. Your totals are listed at our site. This is not a tax deductible charity. This is a patriotic charity. You are supporting the service person and their family by sending coupons that you do not use, and all of the extra ones that you can find, to them. The service pay rates are no longer below the poverty level, but they are in no way great when you have a family. Our military service families appreciate your assistance. This charity is run at the most, by just a few volunteers. They have no donations and no budget. The volunteers spend a lot of their free time and personal funds to support this worthy cause and care very much about it. Please keep in mind that they also have personal lives that require our attention. At times they may be absent to attend to personal affairs and not get right back to you but they have not abandoned the program. They will be back soon. Please be patient. For information on the program please read the site. This website will answer almost any question you can think of. They have been doing this and answering questions for over 17 years. Please read through the site carefully. If you still have questions, by all means send them to them. Thanks for your interest and your support!

CHIEF TACTICAL OFFICER BY 2LT STEVEN MCKEAN
I have returned to active duty after a long absence and is assigned as the Chief Tactical Officer. I am accompanied by my daughter, Cadet Catherine „Kitty‟ McKean. Kitty is an advanced math and life sciences student taking online coursework from John Hopkins University on Earth. Biographies for both will follow later.
The 133rd may be a new unit, but we represent a history grander than us all. Marines have been in existence almost as long as being have been floating across their planets oceans. Marines have been on military vessels, extending their nation‟s powers and influences since Man first looked into the heavens. We represent them and all that they accomplished. We, the Marines, are not the pride of Starfleet. We are the dark secret most of the politicians and ambassadors would like to forget about. We are the ones that remind them of what happens when they fail. When they can‟t talk their way out of a fight. We are the warriors that are kept on a leash until we are needed. But ultimately that is the reason that they get sleep at night. We are their silent guardians. We are not the explorers that reach into the unknown void, we are not the engineers that build great ships, we are not the scientists or doctors that work to find answers and cures. We are warriors, plain and simple. We train and live for the days of war. We are the warriors that go out into that unknown void to face the enemy before the enemy enters our space. We go where others fear to tread, and we do not flinch, we do not run, and we do not leave brethren behind. Those are the things I live by, and expect the same of you. Do not flinch, do not run, and never leave a brethren behind.” “Company, Attention.” “First Sergeant, They‟re all yours.”
Captain's Log Star Date 11002.10 The USS Columbia has finally left space dock on our shakedown cruise. The Columbia is a fine ship with an amazing crew. The ship is in good shape though there are still a few technical problems that need to be addressed as we go. Our first mission a simple checkout of ship's systems and crew to make sure everything is ready to proceed on our mission of exploration. We have a mixed crew of officers and even a few cadets. All have performed exemplary to date. We are well on our way to the beginning of a successful mission. I look forward to many adventures ahead of us. COMM JASON SHRECK CO, USS COLUMBIA
