F

or musically inclined Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), there is an opportunity to unite through the very staple that has rhythmically bound cultures throughout history; music.

“It’s sort of like a college choir or a school choir,” said Command Chaplain Cmdr. Kim Donahue. “We brought that concept with us from the Theodore Roosevelt because individuals love to sing in harmony and read music.”

The only bass singer in the ship’s command choir, Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Benjamin Larkin, participated in the choir aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) before moving to the George Washington.

“For me, a lot of it is just personal expression,” said Larkin, who prior to

joining the Navy sang in school and church. “I love to sing no matter what, in church or otherwise. It is a way for me to relieve my stress and get out there and be involved.”

George Washington currently has three active choirs: command, contemporary Christian and the gospel choir.

Ship’s Serviceman 3rd Class Daeon Farrar, lay leader of the ship’s gospel service and an ordained minister at his home church, Spiritual Faith Ministries in Richmond, Virginia, began singing at the age of three.

“I feel like this is part of not just only me but more importantly, part of God,” said Farrar. “That’s my life. I enjoy my career and the life that I live, but my main thing is that people’s spiritual aspects are met and they can come somewhere to kind of relax and enjoy themselves.”

The command choir presently has nine people but Donahue encourages others to join.

“Participation in [the choirs] is always open,” said Command Chaplain Cmdr.

Kim Donahue. “If someone realizes this is something that they love doing and it keeps them motivated, then they can join.”

The command choir practices in the chapel Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Tuesdays at 12 p.m. The contemporary Christian choir practices in the chapel Saturdays at 6 p.m. The gospel choir practices in the chapel Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and in the foc’s’le Saturdays at 7 p.m.

The command choir is scheduled to perform at the Women’s History Month Observance March 18 on the ship’s aft mess decks.

fter a combined 16 months at sea, the crews of the USS George Washington (CVN 73) and the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) gained an immense amount of experience and knowledge. It is this experience and knowledge that Washington’s Second Class Petty Officer’s Association (SCPOA) hopes to share and build upon.

Following the integration of the two crews, six Sailors aim to build comeradrie and engage junior Sailors through the ship’s renewed SCPOA. “ Wa s h i n g t o n had an SCPOA in Japan but during the first crew swap it went away,” said Intelligence Specialist 2nd Class Scott Miller.

“Now we are trying to get the SCPOA started again.”

S C P O A President Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) 2nd Class Desean Davis said the group is working hard to get the word out to fellow second class petty officers about the organization and what it stands for.

“We are trying to lead by example,” said Davis. “We are using word of mouth, networking and putting up fliers [to get out the message],” said Davis.

Davis and Miller agree that the word is spreading and it appears involvement will be strong.

“We had one meeting so far and more than 30 Sailors showed up, which is a good start,” said Miller. “The ratio of former [Theodore Roosevelt] members and [George Washington] Sailors was pretty even too, which is good.”

Davis said the SCPOA plans to have meetings every other week and that they have begun planning events and activities already. He said he also hopes to bring some activities that were popular on the Theodore Roosevelt to the crew of the George Washington.

“We’ve done Chic-fil-A events, ice cream socials and [Navy] career fairs,” said Davis.

“We plan on bringing Sponsorship Night to the Washington as well,” added Miller, referring to a SCPOA sponsored activity that was successful on the Theodore Roosevelt.

“It’s kind of like a game night. We have different organizations come together and have an open mic night, board games or training for Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS).”

Miller said they plan to get more involved with the ship and in the community as the organization grows, but for now the SCPOA is looking to boost their ranks.

“Come to a meeting or an event,” said Davis. “Why wouldn’t you want to join? You get to know your peers and network and come together to help your junior Sailors.”
