#TWINNING NAVY SISTERS SHARE THEIR STORY

ould y o u b e shocked to see identical twins stationed together at the same command? It’s not as uncommon as you think. Meet Seaman Jaclyn Davis and Personnel Specialist Seaman Jenifer Davis. Born two minutes apart, the sisters grew up side-by-side in Grass Valley, California, never missing a moment together. A f t e r celebrating their 22nd birthdays, they decided to begin their naval careers and shipped off for boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, Feb. 5, 2014. “When we joined we used the buddy system to go to boot camp and be at our first command together,” said Jaclyn. “It made life easier. We joined as undesignated

seaman, and when we got to our first c o m m a n d we were both in Deck Department.” Jaclyn said being around family and friends provides c o m f o r t , especially when experiencing new things for the first time, such as reporting to their first command when they checked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore R o o s e v e l t (CVN 71) in May 2014. Now, after making a nearly 9-month deployment aboard Theodore Roosevelt and completing an historic three-hull crew swap, Jaclyn and Jenifer still rely on each other as much as ever. “To be here with her makes it easier to adjust to this lifestyle, more specifically on a deployment where you know you have someone to talk to,” said Jaclyn.

It was shocking and one of the most memorable moments in the Navy. It was awesome getting picked up for [Personnel Specialist] but it was bittersweet not being able to work with my sister. PSSN Jenifer Davis

“When people join it’s a whole new environment. It makes it difficult not knowing anybody, so when my sister left Deck we made sure to stay close. “We served together for close to two years before Jenifer struck for her new rate,” said Jaclyn. “Now that we are working opposite schedules, we have to coordinate time to meet up, but we make it work.” Jaclyn worked alongside her sister for 22 months before Jenifer received news she was selected to become a Personnel Specialist (PS) in December 2015 “I was shocked when I found out I was selected to become a PS,” said Jenifer. “It is one of the most memorable moments I have in the Navy so far. It was awesome getting picked up but bittersweet knowing that I wasn’t going to be working alongside my sister.” Jaclyn is working with the ship’s career counselors to strike for a rate. “I’m trying to strike for personnel specialist,” said Jaclyn. “We scored the same on our ASVAB test but our line scores were different and she was more qualified for that rate.” Outside their Navy careers, Jaclyn and Jenifer are taking college courses working toward bachelor degrees in business with the goal of opening a frozen yogurt franchise. “I picture us running the business together doing what we love,” said Jenifer. “The Navy is providing us with the opportunity to gain management skills and experience while developing the financial security to support our dreams for when we do get out of the Navy.”

ailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) transferred 557,000 pounds of ordnance onto the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower (CVN 69) April 13-14. The ordnance transfer comes as Ike steps up preparations for a regularly scheduled upcoming deployment and George Washington begins preparations for an extended yard period scheduled to start next year. “We off-loaded ammunition onto the Ike so they can utilize it for their future missions,” said Lt. Travis Semones, the ordnance handling officer aboard the Washington. “We also off-loaded because we can’t take the ammunition and explosives into the yards for our refueling complex overhaul. There are going to be different types of maintenance to the ship that requires welding and cutting. It is a requirement we get all ammunition off the ship beforehand.” The transfer required helicopters to transport 274 pallets from ship to ship. Throughout the complex event, the crew maintained safe operations. “Everyone is in charge of safety,” said Senior Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Peter Van Nimwegen, the leading chief petty officer of the G-1 division. “If someone sees anything unsafe, we stop what we are doing to assess it and then move forward. You have to take your time and work as a crew when dealing with ordnance.” “It was a ship-wide evolution,” said Semones. “We had Engineering Department provide a fire watch team, Medical Department stood by in case of a medical emergency and Air Department was in charge of directing the aircraft that transferred the ammunition.” Sailors prepared for the evolution months in advance, with the first step being to account for exactly what was going to be moved off the ship. “It started in the Weapon’s Department G-3 division where they organized, accounted for and banded the ammunition,” said Van Nimwegen. “We then had our safety briefs on how to move the equipment to the hangar bay and to the flight deck. In the end, it took approximately 250 helicopter trips to move all the ammunition off the ship.”
