PHENOMENAL WOMEN

ICONIC WOMEN IN U.S. MILITARY HISTORY

W

omen in the Navy and Marines Corps have an illustrious, though relatively recent, history with enlistment only becoming legal April 6, 1917. That date established t h e foundation for numerous milestones to follow, including July 1, 2014, when Adm. Michelle H o w a r d became the first female four-star admiral in the 238-year history of the Navy. Today, w o m e n make up 14.9 percent of the military’s active-duty servicemembers with more than 164,000 enlisted members and 39,000 officers, according to a 2013 report published by the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Military Community and Family Policy). “Some of the greatest milestones for women I have witnessed are women in submarines, and just last August the first women graduated Army Ranger School,” said Chief Aviation Support Equipment Technician Daphne Guzman, the production chief petty officer

for the aircraft carrier George Washington’s (CVN 73) support equipment division. August 2015, Capt. Kristen Griest and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver became the first female soldiers to complete the Army’s Ranger

School, a grueling 61-day combat leadership course. “It makes me extremely proud because just a few years before I joined the Navy women were not even allowed to be on ships, and now look at us,” said Guzman. “It feels great to represent the military and prove that women can really do it all.” “[Navy] Master Chief Legalman Alicia Barnes was the first black master chief legalman,” added Master Chief Logistics Specialist Mary Ames, Supply Department leading chief petty officer. “Within my own

Supply Department community, Cmdr. Yarbrough is my first female commander. Also, two of my female friends are master chief ship’s servicemen (SHCM) out of a Navy-wide three.” A f t e r joining the Navy 21 years ago, Ames picked up the rank of Master Chief last year and said it was a dream come true. “I just want to make a positive impact and do the best I can at all times,” said Ames. “Somebody helped me and showed me the way so I am charged with giving back.” Guzman, a 19-year Navy veteran, said perceptions about female Sailors have evolved throughout her career. “When I first came in there was some discrimination,” said Guzman. “I would hear male Sailors in my rate say things like, ‘well she’s going to get pregnant the moment she gets to the ship’, but I don’t hear that anymore and my Sailors don’t either. That tells me there has been a vast improvement in the way people think about women in the military.”

GERALD R. FORD SAILORS TRAIN ABOARD GW UNDERWAY

T

he aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) pulled away from its pier in Norfolk, March 10, with 33 temporary assigned duty (TAD) Sailors from Precommissioning Unit Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) to give them a chance to train and share the experience of what it is like underway aboard a mission-ready aircraft carrier. “To me it’s a really enjoyable experience to see their faces when they go underway for the first time and to receive their first real experience being on the job,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 1 st Class Leny Santiago, Washington’s V-3 Division leading petty officer. “You can see that they’re excited to be here. Even when they learn something little, you can see happiness in their faces; attentive, eyes wide open.” Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Apprentice Benjamin Thulin, a Ford Sailor aboard Washington, said that being underway with Washington was the first time he has ever had real on-the-job training. “We are only able to read manuals,” said Thulin. “Here we’re able to see a working flight deck and hangar bay, watch takeoffs, get qualifications and learn more about our rating in general. It feels good to actually do the job.” The first-of-its-class carrier, Ford, is under construction at Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding. The type of on-the-job training Ford Sailors are receiving aboard Washington can only be had at sea and is critical before Ford can join the fleet. “My job is to make sure they get the best training and to

make the most of their time here,” said Santiago. “They’re really motivated and excited to go to sea and experience the lifestyle. They are being very aggressive with getting qualified. They’ve been on it, they haven’t missed a beat, and I’m happy to be the guy that puts them on the right track.” Washington’s current crew boasts the combined experience of two crews, each coming off recently completed deployments. Following a first-of-its-kind three-carrier hull swap, the current Washington crew combines many former USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Sailors, who just completed a 9-month deployment in November, with Washington Sailors, who completed a seven-month deployment in December. “Most of our division is from the Roosevelt,” said Santiago. “When we came together, we all learned new ways of doing things because each carrier does things a little differently. It’s been an advantage because now that we’re working together it’s created a wider picture for us. Our crew is equipped with sharp skills and experience. The Ford Sailors came at the right time.” Thulin said that being underway has been an excellent learning experience, and has made him want to go on a full deployment. He said the underway has taught him a lot about his rate and being a Sailor. “Putting a plan into motion and seeing it work out, as well as helping them achieve their goals is very rewarding,” said Santiago.
