ailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) celebrated Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month on the ship’s mess decks, June 21. The event included a speech by Aviation Electronics Technician 3rd Class Alyssa Toomey, the master of ceremonies for the event, a LGBT tribute performance by Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Tresurea Nelson and Machinist’s Mate (Nuclear) 1st Class Kayla Kelly,

and featured guest speaker Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Tiffany James. “Diversity is one of our nation’s greatest strengths,” said Toomy. “During LGBT Pride Month, we celebrate our rich diversity and renew our enduring commitment to equity. This year’s theme is celebration. We celebrate the dedication and contributions of our lesbian, gay, and bisexual service members and LGBT civilians that have had immeasurable impact on our national security and

the DoD (Department of Defense).” Last year the DoD updated the Equal Opportunity program to discrimination based on sexuality equal to discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, age and national origin. “Equality, dignity, respect,” said Capt. Timothy C. Kuehhas, commanding officer of Washington. “Today, we not only recognize our diversity but we celebrate our diversity. I think the skit performers did a great job. And in a very concise

manner they told a whole story; a story about equality, a story about dignity, a story about respect.” L G B T Pride Month is held in June in commemoration of the Stonewall riots, June 28, 1969. Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in New York City operating without a liquor license. When employees were detained a crowd formed and erupted into violent protests lasting several days. The event is touted as the first equal rights protest for homosexuals. The demonstrations also prompted the formation of the Gay Liberation Front and many other LGBT civil rights organizations filling the void

of LGBT representation. “Diversity and inclusion are readiness imperatives,” said Toomey.

“We rely on our diverse backgrounds, perspectives and expertise to enable us to address the complex challenges of the global security environment. Diversity is more than just race, gender and ethnicity; it

means diversity of thought, ability, background, language, culture and skill.” The event was an open forum for attendees to learn and discuss the LGBT communities’ contribution to civil rights for all citizens. “The Navy has gone through great strides to make the LGBT community feel as equals,” said James. “I’ll never forget where I was September 2011. For those of you that don’t know, that’s when they repealed the ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ policy. My chief called me down from the flight deck to the office and said, ‘James you can be who you are, you don’t have to hide anymore.’”

11 8BIRTHDAY OF THE

T

CORPSMAN

he U.S. Navy Hospital Corps was officially established June 17, 1898, and has proven to be an integral part of the country’s war-fighting efforts. Since its inception, more than 1,900 enlisted medical personnel have been killed in action, 22 have received the Medal of Honor and 20 naval vessels have been named in honor of corpsmen who have served. Following the 118th birthday of the rate, Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington’s (CVN 73) Medical Department recently honored the history and sacrifice of those who previously served as corpsmen. “We’re paying homage to 22 Medal of Honor recipients, countless Silver Star awardees and those that worked hard, made sacrifices and laid a foundation for those involved in our rate,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Rashad Beamon. The Medical and Dental Departments aboard Washington consist of 52 Sailors who provide first aid treatment, preventative care, as well as dental and health services to more than 3,000 crewmembers. “While we celebrate the birthday of our rate, it means a lot more to me to be out here at sea operating, providing our shipmates with a necessary service and aiding with the completion of our mission,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Danielle Giard. “Every day, as corpsmen, we strive to provide the best possible patient care to all of our shipmates.” Many of the Navy’s enlisted corpsmen are regularly stationed with Marine Corps units or at military treatment facilities. Serving on an aircraft carrier is a special opportunity, said Beamon. “We’re geared towards sea power and sea duty, but many hospital corpsmen don’t get to see a lot of sea duty or time on a ship,” said Beamon. “It’s a lot more meaningful being able to get back to our roots as Sailors, provide necessary medical care and be a hospital corpsman at sea.” “I am glad to be able to serve as a hospital corpsman and be here on George Washington for the 118th corpsman birthday,” said Beamon.

NAVY NEWS WEST POINT, N.Y. (NNS) -- Navy wounded warrior athletes excelled at shooting events during the fourth day of competition, at the Department of Defense Warrior Games in West Point, New York, June 19. Shooting events involve competitors using air pistols and air rifles to fire a series of shots at a stationary, electric target. Shooting categories include air pistol, air rifle (standing) and air rifle (prone), all at a distance of 10 meters. Senior Chief Culinary Specialist Maria Torres competed in the air rifle prone division. “I won the bronze medal today and it was really exciting!” Torres said. “I was not expecting to [receive a] medal. We have an awesome team of Navy shooters and I just feel very blessed to have this opportunity.” Torres was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, and in 2014 she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer

in the bones. She shared feelings regarding her involvement with the Navy Wounded Warrior - Safe Harbor (NWW) adaptive sports program. “Adaptive sports has kept my

mind away from feeling sorry for myself and has given me a sense of accomplishment,” said Torres. “It has also helped me realize that there are still many things that are possible even in my current physical condition.”

Team Navy had a strong showing in the shooting competition, winning three gold and three bronze medals. Retired Lt. j.g. Laura Root, who is competing in her third Warrior Games, won gold in the air rifle prone open event and bronze in the air rifle standing open event. “For me, the greatest part of today was when the coaches from other teams, venue managers, and volunteers came in after the competition to thank Team Navy for being the most helpful and spirited,” said Root. “We really had fun out there today and it was great to watch our new athletes mentor fellow competitors.” On the fifth, and final, day of competition for Team Navy -- and first day of summer -- 13 athletes competed in swimming. Events included 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 50-yard backstroke, 50-yard breaststroke, and 200-yard freestyle relays in both men’s and women’s categories.

Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group Visits Italy From USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) Public Affairs

NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- Five ships from the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) conducted port visits across Italy as part of the Great Green Fleet partnership between the U.S.Italian navies, June 17-22. Aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69)(Ike) and guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) visited Naples, while guided-missile destroyers USS Mason (DDG 87) moored in Genoa, USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) in Civitavecchia and USS Nitze (DDG 94) in Trieste. Prior to the port visits, the ships participated in a multi-day passing exercise (PASSEX), involving units of the Italian Navy’s Flotta Verde. The PASSEX highlighted energy conservation operations including short-cycle mission and recovery tanking (SMART), configuration management, trail shaft operations, steady-state transit, autopilot and minimized bleed air. It also involved a replenishment-at-sea event during which the Italian oiler ITS Etna (A5326) gave more than 15,000 gallons of advanced fuel (F76 equivalent) to Mason. “The recent Great Green Fleet operations

in the Mediterranean, along with the strike group port visits throughout Italy further highlight energy conservation technologies for both navies and emphasizes our enduring partnership with Italy,” said Rear Adm. Jesse Wilson, commander, Carrier Strike Group 10. Port visits provide a mutual and increased understanding of culture and ideology, strengthen cooperation and enhance relationships between nations. During the port visits, each ship hosted local civilian and military officials for a reception, conducted tours and community relations events. Sailors also took the opportunity to enjoy the rich culture of Italy. “The moment I stepped off the ship I realized all my hard work had paid off,” said Machinist’s Mate Fireman Hannaniah Williams, assigned to Ike’s engineering department. “I’ve never been outside the country before, and I was absolutely amazed by the culture. The food, the

people and the city were all like something out of a magazine.” Sailors assigned to Ike and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, embarked aboard Ike, participated in a community relations (COMREL) event at Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Hearts Preschool where Sailors cut trees, cleaned up the garden and chapel, and played with the children. “I love working with kids,” said Master-at-Arms Seaman Recruit Maria Fragale-Miller, assigned to Ike’s security department. “When I heard about the COMREL, I volunteered because I could not think of a better way to spend my last day in port.”
