OFFLOAD S

ailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) transferred 2.6 million pounds of ordnance onto the dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS William McLean (T-AKE 12), June 21-22. The ordnance transfer comes as George Washington begins preparations for an extended yard period scheduled to start next year.

“I

t’s a requirement for all explosive ammunition to be off the ship for RCOH (Refueling and Complex Overhaul),” said Lt. Travis Semones, the ship’s ordnance handling officer. “During RCOH there is going to be a lot of hot work; needle gunning and cutting holes in bulkheads. We can’t have any ordnance during these times due to the hot work, which can produce sparks.” Even though the ship has offloaded much of its large ordnance, some small arms will remain. “We have small arms because we still have to maintain security of the ship,” said Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Tonia Devine, assigned as Weapon’s Department G-1 Division work-center supervisor. “All the big bombs, torpedoes, rockets and missiles have already been offloaded. Now we are offloading the rest we couldn’t offload with [the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69)] due to inclement weather.” Sailors transferred ordnance from the 5th deck magazines via hydraulic elevators to the hangar bay. There, forklift operators hauled the ordnance to the connected replenishment stations or the ship’s aircraft elevators where it was relocated onto the flight deck for helicopters to transfer onto the McLean. “It’s an all-hands evolution,” said Devine. “All of Weapons Department is out here moving ordnance; Security is maintaining boundaries for us so no one gets hurt; Supply is helping out with palate jacks and [Deck Department] is prepping the [connected replenishment] stations.” Weapons Department prepared safety precautions for every foreseeable circumstance. “We were able to coordinate a plan for this,” said Devine. “After every offload and onload we discuss lessons learned where we coordinate to figure out what our struggles were. Last night we did another one and we really forecasted our limitations so we would be able to adapt and overcome. Any weakness we may have, we make it a strength by planning ahead.” Washington began offloading ordnance earlier this year. “The other offloads, in the first half of the year, were 200-300 palates,” said Semones. “This one is everything coming off the ship, 1,900 palates.”

NEXTGENERATION Sailor Builds upon HIS Family Tradition

T

radition helps us remember where we come from, and for Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Tyler Baker, a Sailor aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), he carries on a tradition of creativity begun by his paternal grandmother and continued by his father. “My father’s side of the family lives in Denver, and every time I come to visit they say, ‘Oh, how you look like your father,’” said Tyler. Tyler’s father often drew cartoon figures featuring Tyler and his brother Ryan. Even though Tyler was only three when his father died, many of these drawings survived and are cherished by Tyler. “He made a little cartoon that had my older brother and me,” said Tyler. “It’s called ‘Lil Ryler’, which is Ryan and Tyler. It’s because of my father that I aspire to be a good artist.” Tyler enrolled in graphic design classes in high school, and one class, businessrelated graphic design, required students

to create various designs for a fictional restaurant. “It was as if a restaurant commissioned our class,” said Tyler. “We designed logos, menus, cups and kid’s meal boxes in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.” Tyler plans to start a freelance graphic-design business after he retires from the Navy. He plans to focus on advertising, designing cartoons like his father’s, and creating expressive art. “The Navy, and being at sea on a ship, can be inspiring,” said Tyler. “I remember seeing a Sailor who was watching the sun set while leaning on the railing of a catwalk. I took a mental image of that moment and plan to recreate it.” It is important to decompress negative energy, said Baker. “Art makes me happy. People may use alcohol to cope with their stress, but I like to put on my headphones and start drawing. I can draw for 14 hours a day in my own world and not even realize it.”
