rtistic director Bryan Doerries, co-founder of ‘Outside the Wire’, and actor Brian F. O’Byrne performed scenes from Conor McPherson’s ‘Rum and Vodka’ to Sailors in the hangar bay aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), May 21. Rum and Vodka is a one-hour performance that is the basis for group discussion on alcohol abuse. The performance raises awareness of alcohol abuse and the possibilities of making positive choices in a culture of excessive drinking. “I think alcohol abuse and substance abuse in general affects all Americans, all families, and it’s something that we don’t talk about enough in the open,” said Doerries. “There are a lot of people in recovery who talk in private, but we need to have conversations in the open where they’re unstigmatized; where people can acknowledge that this is something that touches us all; that it’s human; it’s nothing to be ashamed of and that seeking help is something that actually isn’t a sign of weakness but a sign of strength.” The performance discusses a man who copes with his issues through acohol. Throughout the course of a few days he traps himself in his actions, and with the influence of acohol, tears his life apart. “I thought it was really interesting, the fact that it’s presented in a different way rather than just a PowerPoint,” said Airman Alejandro Baisman, a panelist for two of the performances. “I liked it better because it’s a different way of coming across instead of the usual alcohol training. It was a lot more interesting getting to meet the guys too.” Doerries said that the play relates to things everyone goes through. “This isn’t a play that’s against alcohol,” said Doerries. “It’s not about telling people not to drink, it’s acknowledging that at the very time when we need to be reflective, when we’re 18 to 30, we don’t have a lot of tools to help us think about it, and boy, I wish I had been given the opportunity to reflect when I was younger.” Sailors engaged in discussions with Doerries after the performance when asked questions about the play and how it relates to their lives. “I related 90 percent to that guy in the play with the exception of kids, and he was older than me,” said Baisman. “Basically the same fear, the same struggles that he had, I went through the exact same thing, emptiness, all of the things described about this guy’s character.” For Sailors struggling with alcohol abuse, Doerries recommends surrounding themselves with people who help make healthy choices. “Know that you’re not the first person to have had these issues,” said Doerries. “It’s very isolating to struggle with these issues. One gets the impression that you’re alone, but of course you’re surrounded by many older people who’ve been down this road and can help you.”
