ailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), bedecked in brightly colored running gear, gathered beneath the ship’s towering 73 as they awaited the start of a flight deck 5k sponsored by the ship’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) division, April 21. Orange cones marked the course, and a sparkling ocean met the sky at the horizon to provide a perfect backdrop for the day’s event. “Running on the flight deck is very different from running on a treadmill or in the ship’s hangar bay,” said Logistics Specialist Seaman Kalen Mcintosh. “You get to see the sun, the ocean and all the people out there enjoying themselves.” MWR provides the ship’s embarked Sailors with recreational activities and fitness opportunities during the ship’s underway evolutions, providing Sailors with relief from the stresses of Navy life. “There are a lot of people and a lot of big jobs going on while on board,” said Megan Villapudua, GW’s Afloat Recreation Specialist, or Fun Boss. “It’s important to be able to have a recreational outlet to keep from getting too stressed. It’s important to be able to have a recreational outlet to keep from getting too stressed. We all need that. Something to break up the routine of working, eating and sleeping, that can become very monotonous. Megan Villapudua, Fun Boss

and sleeping that can sometimes become very monotonous” Villapudua, has been a part of the Navy’s Afloat Recreation Programs since February 2012. “The most challenging part is trying to provide a wide array of programs for a large range of individuals that differ in age, rank and interests,” said Villapudua. “We try to offer something that a number of people will enjoy across the board.” MWR provides Sailors and their families with discounted movie tickets, game nights, tours, video-game systems and information about other recreational opportunities. “We are in charge of maintaining the all-around morale of the ship’s crew,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 3rd Class Janae Colclough. “The most rewarding part of working with MWR is being at an event that you helped to setup and seeing everyone in attendance having a good time and enjoying themselves.” According to Colclough, event planning and coordination take a lot of effort and attention to detail must be paid to ensure that MWR sponsored events proceed smoothly. “Our largest challenge is remaining patient and doing our best to always provide the best possible customer service to all of our shipmates,” said Colclough. Music combined with the crunch of waves against the ship as smiling faces, wet with sweat, gathered past the finish line. “I very much enjoyed the 5k and I look forward to every single run that MWR offers,” said Mcintosh. “I run everyday and it’s an activity that I really enjoy.”

exual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) victim advocates may be everyday Sailors, but they are also some of the greatest assests available to victims of sexual assault. Advocates, available around the clock, can provide Sailors a link to many resources the Navy has in place for victims of sexual assault. “They come to us and we are literally with them every step of the way,” said Electronics Technician 2nd Class Amanda Craig, an active member of USS George Washington’s (CVN 73) SAPR team and a certified victim advocate. “Whether it’s unrestricted or restricted, we are here for them. We give them resources they need, whether it be through medical, counseling or the chaplain. We have full confidentiality so anything that is said to us, we do not say to anybody else.” Victim advocates on watch 24/7 are a direct line for victims to reach out to for help. When the call comes in and a case is opened, an advocate will stand by the victim until the case is closed no matter how long it may take. It can be an emotionally trying position, but it enables Sailors to make an impact on someone’s life in a way not many

others can. “Everybody has their own reasons for being involved in SAPR,” said Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Kassandra Bixler, a member of GW’s SAPR team and a certified victim advocate. “It’s not always an easy program to get involved with because you deal with a lot of distressing things, but in the end it helps people.” April is SAPR awareness month, set aside to specifically highlight the seriousness of sexual assault and the harmful effects it can have. SAPR Awareness Month also gave GW’s victims advocates a chance to introduce themselves to the crew. The ship held several events to help the crew get to know the advocates and encourage Sailors to come forward if they need help. “Knowing that I can help someone in a situation other’s couldn’t, makes it worth it,” said Bixler. “I also get the opportunity to bring awareness by participating in different awareness activities on the ship and on Norfolk Naval Station.” Further information on DoD and SAPR policies can be found at www.sapr.mil.
