INFORMATION

Message From the President and Executive Director

COMMUNITY TENNIS

The most important thing is not to win but to take part. This Olympic motto unites athletes from around the world in a sporting tradition that dates back more than 100 years. In this Olympic year, a diverse group of athletes will convene in London to compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Tennis enthusiasts will be glued to the TV watching the tennis competition from the historic grass courts of Wimbledon in late July and early August.

JUNIOR CAMPS

In 1912, the iconic Olympic rings were designed by Baron Pierre De Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, to symbolize the idea that the Olympic movement welcomes all countries to join the competition. The colors of the rings represent the five regions of the world that come together to compete. That same year, Jim Thorpe, a young Native American man who grew up in the Sac and Fox Nation in Oklahoma would travel to Stockholm, Sweden to compete in the Olympics against almost insurmountable odds. Thorpe would go on to win gold medals in both the pentathlon and decathlon. This year in mid-June, thousands will gather in Oklahoma City for the centennial celebration of Thorpe’s gold medal victory.

JUNIORS

Like the Olympic rings that represent the five regions, tennis athletes in our five states are united in the opportunity to play the game in our seven districts. Our mission, “To promote and develop the growth of tennis” is driven by our focus on diversity and inclusion. Everyone, regardless of their race, age, physical abilities or backgrounds is welcome to join in the game. This core value of inclusion drives the success we have experienced in the USTA Missouri Valley. 2011 was no exception.

ADULT LEAGUES

In 2011 we laid the groundwork to grow youth tennis by making tennis more kid friendly. 10 and Under Tennis was introduced with five key components – smaller courts, shorter racquets, balls that don’t bounce as high or fast, nets lower to the ground and a simplified scoring system for youth. Like the Olympic rings, the five components are linked together to ensure these participants grow in the game. With the new 10 and Under Tennis rules adopted in 2012, we will experience a new level of play and success for our junior players.

ADULTS

While we all agree that this new national initiative will impact the future of the American game, we continue to see success on the court in our section. One Missouri Valley junior caught the attention of the country as he competed and won the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship. Jack Sock and partner Melanie Oudin captured not only the top prize, but the appreciation of a country who longs for American success at the Grand Slams. Jack, now 19, is competing and experiencing some success on the USTA Professional Circuit, winning the first tournament of 2012, the Plantation Futures in Florida.

DISTRICTS

Thorpe isn’t the only Olympic athlete to have come from our five states. Nick Taylor, of Wichita, has won gold medals in Quad Doubles tennis in both the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Paralympics. In 2011, Nick had another successful year, winning quad doubles with partner David Wagner in the USTA US Open Wheelchair Championships in St. Louis. 4

The cornerstone programs in the USTA continue to experience growth and success in the USTA Missouri Valley. In 2011 USTA League participation was at an all-time high of 17,593 participants. Participation in these programs, and a membership promotion to give a free USTA membership to all new 10 and Under members in 2011 and 2012, are responsible for our highest membership numbers ever, currently 24,047. It’s up to each and every one of us to continue to engage the juniors, as well as tournament and USTA League players, in the game so we see higher membership retention and participation numbers. The USTA Missouri Valley greatly benefits from the commitment of manpower – volunteers and staff alike. A new board of directors will be elected and volunteer committees will be appointed this year to begin serving in 2013. This could be your call to serve. On page 3 of the Yearbook you will see quotes from many of volunteers who share their thoughts on why “I Serve.” Each year we take the opportunity to recognize volunteers and players who serve the game at our annual Awards Luncheon and Hall of Fame Induction. In December, 2011, 32 section award winners received well-deserved honors. We also welcomed five new members into the USTA Missouri Valley Hall of Fame. You can see a list of the recipients on pages 8-10 in the Yearbook. We’d be remiss to not recognize the staff members who daily support the USTA mission to grow the game. Did you know the average staff tenure is seven years? The 18 staff members are here to serve the game – let us know how we can be of assistance to you in your efforts to grow the game. The people we’ve highlighted in the 2012 Yearbook are all members of a team. It’s that same team spirit the Olympians have had for generations that continues to make the USTA Missouri Valley successful. The Olympic motto that was embraced a hundred years ago still resonates in our five states:

“The most important thing is not to win but to take part.”

Volunteers are the "VIPs" on our team. They serve the USTA because of their love of tennis and a desire to give back to the game that has given so much to them. The reason a volunteer gives of his or her valuable time is as individual as how they came to the game. Their commitment at every level of the game makes it possible for the USTA mission to be met - “To promote and develop the growth of tennis.”

INFORMATION

USTA Missouri Valley Section Hall of Fame Criteria

In order to be eligible to be inducted into the USTA Missouri Valley Hall of Fame, a nominee must meet one of four criteria: A USTA Missouri Valley resident for five or more years or, be a player who has participated in numerous section and/or national championships and gained a ranking high enough to be considered an outstanding player or, made a substantial contribution to tennis (i.e. tournament directors, teaching pros, coaches and umpires) or, shown exemplary sportsmanship and character on and off the court.

Rex Coad Wichita, Kansas Coad grew up in the Wichita area, began his competitive career as a junior netter in the USTA Missouri Valley section and played collegiate tennis at Wichita State University. Following his graduation from WSU, Coad became involved in the local tennis industry with the Wichita Racquet Club, where he would spend the next 20 years of his professional career. Concurrently, he became the men’s tennis coach for the Shockers. From 1985-1997, he volunteered in many Kansas District Tennis Association and USTA Missouri Valley positions and was chairperson of the Junior Competition Committee from 1995-1997. Following a 20-year association with the Wichita Racquet Club, Coad has been the tennis professional at the Wichita Country Club since 1998.

James "Buddy" Fields Wichita, Kansas Like many in the Wichita area, Fields was introduced to tennis early by Missouri Valley Hall of Famer Charles “Goose” Doughty, a fixture in the local tennis community. Soon, Fields began to coach in the local parks, helping develop many players in the Wichita area through his tireless efforts. His family founded the BK Tennis Academy in Wichita and owned and operated the facility through 2009. Fields dominated the competition in his later years, ranking as high as No. 1 in the ATA as an adult, winning the ATA 45s singles national title three times and the 55s national title once. Fields also found success in USTA national tournaments. In 2007, he reached a national ranking of No. 9 in the 60s singles division and No. 1 within the Missouri Valley section.

Jane Pratt St. Louis, Missouri Jane Pratt was involved in the game of tennis her entire life. She was a player, an organizer, a supporter and a fan since the first day she walked onto a court. Jane is remembered as a crafty, solid doubles player on the court. Off the court, Jane’s contributions were immense. In 1965, she became president of the Municipal Tennis Association, serving for 43 years in that role. For more than 40 years, she was a fixture at Dwight Davis Tennis Center. She tirelessly campaigned to improve the facilities and her contributions have helped Dwight Davis Tennis Center become one of the best public tennis facilities in the nation. Jane is indelibly linked to St. Louis tennis. Her efforts to support tennis in countless ways in the area left a permanent positive impact on the sport. The game of tennis is better because of her.

Janet Thomas Griffith Tulsa, Oklahoma For her 10th birthday, Janet Thomas Griffith’s father gave her a tennis racquet in hopes that she would like the sport as much as he did. Turns out, she did. Following her sophomore year of college, she moved to Norman, Okla., where she played on the first-ever OU women’s tennis team in 1975. After graduating college, Janet continued playing in adult tournaments throughout the nation and found success not just as a player, but as a coach as well. From 1980-85, she led the Oral Roberts University women’s tennis team. Besides teaching private and group lessons to all ages, Janet directed local tennis tournaments, and coordinated team tennis groups, after-school programs and clinics. She also worked with the USTA’s NJTL program, giving lessons to underprivileged children.

Kim Steinmetz St. Louis, Missouri From the age of seven, Kim Steinmetz loved and embraced the game. She was the first woman to receive a full tennis scholarship at Southern Methodist University. She attended SMU for two years, followed by two years at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. During her collegiate career, Kim was a two-time All-American. After graduation, Kim joined the professional tennis circuit and was eventually ranked in the Top 100. Kim’s professional tennis career lasted 10 years and included 26 Grand Slam tournament appearances. She retired in 1990 and immediately began her second passion, teaching others about the game she loves. Kim, still doing what she loves, is currently the tennis director at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

USTA MISSOURI VALLEY PROGRAM REFERENCE GUIDE

ADULT PROGRAMS

COMMUNITY TENNIS

USTA League Tennis is one of the most successful recreational sports programs in the country. Players can make friends and compete not only in matches against players with similar abilities, but also as part of a team. USTA Leagues has more than 17,500 participants in the Missouri Valley and includes more than 625,000 players from all across the nation, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league. In addition to competing locally, you can vie for district, section and even national championships – just as long as your team keeps winning. Players range in age from 18 to 90 (and beyond), so there’s a team for you to play singles, doubles or mixed.

JUNIOR CAMPS

USTA Flex Leagues packages all the thrills of organized league tennis into a flexible schedule so everyone, regardless of time constraints and ability, can play. With Flex Leagues, it’s your call. The Flex League format groups players of similar ability together in an organized seven to ten week league that allows participants to schedule matches on their own terms. Flex Leagues can be either singles or doubles, within NTRP ratings or by gender, ensuring fair and competitive matches. Go to ustaflex.com.

JUNIORS

There are many adult and senior tournaments offered at the district and section level. These tournaments are for players of all levels and players can enter to compete in either singles or doubles. These tournaments match players by skill level or age and they are a great way to maintain or improve your tennis skills playing against new competitors who are on your level. Find a list of adult and senior tournaments in your area on TennisLink.

ADULTS LEAGUES

USTA Tennis on Campus program is a natural extension to a college or university’s physical education tennis classes, intramurals/extramurals program or recreational league. It’s the chance to begin, or continue another type of education while in college, your tennis education! USTA Tennis on Campus programs offer students and faculty the chance to compete in a friendly and competitive playing environment. The playing format of USTA Tennis on Campus is designed to be flexible, so that it will work on any campus and incorporate players of all ability levels and teams of all sizes. Beginning players may elect to concentrate more on skill building and the social aspects of tennis, while more advanced players might opt to form a sport club team and compete against nearby schools. Visit tennisoncampus.com for a list of schools and details on how to start a team.

ADULTS

Varsity collegiate tennis in the United States provides opportunities for thousands of players to continue their tennis careers while earning a college degree. There are three associations governing collegiate athletics: the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Each association sponsors a season-ending National Championship for its divisions. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis in the United States. The ITA administers a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and events and a far-reaching awards program. The goal of the ITA is to improve the level of intercollegiate tennis competition and the quality of college tennis coaching. Visit www.itatennis.com for more information on the ITA.

YOUTH PROGRAMS 10 and Under Tennis follows the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kid-sized courts and kid-sized equipment. With 10 and Under Tennis, balls bounce lower, don’t move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. Racquets are sized for small hands while courts are smaller and easier to cover. By using this format, the benefits are immediate and, within a short time, kids are rallying, playing, and excited to keep playing. That means kids will have more fun and less frustration. They’re playing real tennis and having real fun—and that’s what is most important. The new rules require that 10-andunder tournaments be played using slower-moving and lower-bouncing balls, on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter racquets. The rule change follows the International Tennis Federation’s recent rule change and applies to all USTA-sanctioned events for children 10-and-under. Visit 10andUnderTennis.com for more information.

Jr. Team Tennis offers girls and boys age 6 to 18 the opportunity to play on teams in local competitions that emphasize fun, fitness and friends. Leagues match players of similar age and ability using the Jr. National Tennis Rating Program (JNTRP). Teams play against each other in one of the following divisions based on age and skill level: • 8 & under: 10 and Under Tennis • 10 & under: 10 and Under Tennis • 12 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced • 14 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced • 18 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced A league consists of a minimum of two teams in the same division, with at least three boys and three girls on each team. Visit jrteamtennis.usta.com for more information.

ADULT LEAGUES

JUNIORS

Junior Tournaments give youth the opportunity to advance their game by getting on the court, learning from the best and connecting with friends. Competing in junior tournaments will help take their game as far as they want to go – high school, college or the pros. Youth can compete in their town, district, section or nationally. Junior competition includes events for everyone- from first time competitors to top level tournaments for more experienced competitors. Participating in multiple formats gives you more chances to compete - round robin, multiple elimination and team events. Find more junior tournaments using the junior tournament listing on the USTA Missouri Valley homepage.

ADULTS

USTA School Tennis is a program designed to introduce the sport to youth through PE classes and extracurricular activities. Children will learn the basics of tennis in PE class, then play games on teams in intramural or interscholastic after school programs. Funding is available to help initiate those leagues. The Missouri Valley will also provide free teacher workshops that demonstrate lessons from the USTA’s tennis curriculum which was developed for teachers with large numbers of students in schools without traditional tennis courts. Schools with USTA membership may access discounted equipment and grants. Register your program on the new school registry at usta.com/schooltennis and receive the school tennis handbook and a USTA schools clipboard.

DISTRICTS

The USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) is a nation-wide network of community tennis organizations seeking to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. The goal of NJTL is to reach out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play the sport, instilling in youngsters the values of leadership and academic excellence and giving all kids (regardless of income, race, or gender) the opportunity to fully develop their tennis skills so they can derive a life time of enjoyment from the sport. The NJTL is a great way for kids to get exercise, make friends, and have fun in a teamoriented and safe environment. NJTL offers a variety of on and off-court programming, emphasizing educational and life-skill components to enhance overall development. This curriculum is offered at little or no cost to the participant. 14

PROFESSIONAL TENNIS

COMMUNITY TENNIS

USTA Pro Circuits provide players with the opportunity to gain the professional ranking points needed to compete on the major pro tours. It is now the largest developmental tennis circuit in the world, consisting of more than 90 tournaments and more than $3 million in prize money. There are two types of men’s events on the USTA Pro Circuit: Futures and Challengers. Futures are professional tournaments offering $10,000 to $15,000 in prize money and are typically the proving ground for top-ranked juniors, college players and pros at the beginning of their careers. Challengers offer $25,000 to $50,000 in prize money. These tournaments serve as a bridge between the Futures and the ATP tour and enable players to earn more points per round than they do in Futures events. Women’s events on the USTA Pro Circuit consist of $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 and $75,000 tournaments. The $10,000 tournaments are entry-level events and give young players the opportunity to earn their first ranking points. The competition and ranking points increase at the $25,000 tournaments. Visit procircuit.usta.com for more information on Pro Circuit Tournaments.

ADULTS LEAGUES

Wheelchair Tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging of all wheelchair sports. To meet this demand, USTA offers programs geared towards the wheelchair player. Rules are the same as stand-up tennis, except the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces of the ball. USTA Wheelchair Tennis provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in activities with their peers, whether able-bodied or disabled. Playing USTA Wheelchair Tennis adds to socialization and the normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury. Proficient wheelchair users can play and actively compete against stand-up players. Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability.

JUNIORS

Adaptive Tennis recognizes four main categories of disabilities:
1) Developmentally disabled (learning disabilities, autism, Down Syndrome, intellectual disabilities)

2) Physically disabled (birth defects, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, muscular dystrophy, hearing impaired, stroke, etc.)

3) Consumers of mental health services (psychiatrically disabled, emotionally disturbed)

4) At risk/environmentally disabled (substance abusers, mentally and physically abused, homeless, HIV positive individuals, persons within the juvenile justice system, etc.)

For each of these groups, USTA Missouri Valley Adaptive Tennis provides grant money, equipment and resources for specifically-tailored programs that provide fun, fitness and a positive social experience for participants. Regional clinics and instructional programs are held throughout the country. The enjoyment, physical well-being and contact shared by participants has proven to be a positive source of self-esteem, helping open doors to a more positive lifestyle. USTA Adaptive Tennis program works to provide opportunities to all populations to enjoy and realize the benefits of tennis and its life changing opportunities.

JUNIOR CAMPS

World TeamTennis always offers fans plenty of thrills, but it is extra exciting in the USTA Missouri Valley, home to two WTT franchises -- the Kansas City Explorers and Springfield Lasers. The USTA is a minority owner and promotional partner of World TeamTennis. WTT and the USTA are teaming up on a number of initiatives, including development of 10 and Under Tennis. Jr. Team Tennis 14s Advanced Team

Seven teens from Kickingbird Tennis Club in Edmond, Oklahoma had a tennis experience in 2011 that they’ll always remember. The 14s Advanced Division team competed in the 2011 USTA Jr. Team Tennis National Championships in Surprise, Arizona. The team, coached by Javier Easton, shared their thoughts about going to Nationals and why they love the game with CrossCourt before they left for Surprise last October. Story by Manon Eilts

At right: Members of the Jr. Team Tennis 14s Advanced Team Beau Lanier, Joel Tinker, Caleb Belden, Miller Zeiders, Kinsey Fields, Rylee Tucker, Jaci Smith

When did you first start playing tennis? Jaci: I have gone to tennis camps and played in my front yard since I was six, but I started competing in tournaments when I was 11. How did you first get started playing tennis? Rylee: I started playing tennis because my friend was going to play and I wanted to play with her. I started out doing beginner drills and loved it, so I kept on playing. Do you play any other sports? Kinsey: Basketball and barrel horse racing. Jaci: I run cross country and track and I also play basketball. What is your favorite subject in school? Beau: My favorite subject in school is EVERY subject! Kinsey: Art. What are your goals in tennis? Caleb: To continue advancing in the Missouri Valley, to make it to Nationals in 14 singles in 2012 and to get a college scholarship. Who is your favorite tennis player, and why? Miller: Roger Federer because he has a one-handed backhand like me. Beau: Pete Sampras because he is a legend and I try to develop my game similar to his. Joel: Andy Murray because he never gives up and I love his style of play and work ethic. Are you excited to play at Jr. Team Tennis National Championships? Beau: Yes, extremely excited. I think it will be an experience I will never forget. Caleb: Yes, I am very excited because I have never played in a national tournament. What are you most looking forward to at the Jr. Team Tennis National Championships? Caleb: I am looking forward to playing some great competitors and doing well for my team. Rylee: I’m looking forward to playing great competition and having fun. What’s the best part about playing tennis? Miller: That it’s physical but I also have to use my head. And it’s just fun! Kinsey: The fun and the competition. It’s a Saturday afternoon, what are you most likely to be doing? Joel: Playing tennis or hanging out with friends. Jaci: If I’m not playing a tennis tournament, I would be outside running or swimming or hitting tennis balls against my garage door. Describe your tennis style. Jaci: I guess I’m a counter puncher. I get everything back deep with spin and wait for a good opportunity to put the ball away. Joel: I try to play consistent until I get a short ball and then I rip it! missourivalley.usta.com

Honoring a Legacy: Jim Thorpe Games Will Celebrate the 100-Year Anniversary of Athlete's Olympic Triumph By Eli Gieryna

Few athletes have impacted sports history like Jim Thorpe. Born in Oklahoma, his versatility was unmatched as he won multiple Olympic medals and also played professional baseball, football and basketball. Thorpe’s legacy will be honored from June 10-17 in Oklahoma City, which will play host to the Jim Thorpe Native American Games. The event will coincide with the 100th anniversary of Thorpe’s performance at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. The Games will feature athletic competitions in 11 traditional sports – including tennis – as well as exhibitions in other games, such as stickball, blowgun and hatchet-throwing. More than 3,000 Native American athletes representing Indian nations, bands and tribes from across the United States are expected to participate. The tennis tournament will offer a range of divisions, including men’s and women’s open singles and doubles, in addition to mixed doubles. It will also have age brackets for juniors and adults alike. Players will travel from around the country to play in the event. “I am so happy that tennis is one of the sports chosen to be part of the Jim Thorpe Games,” said Margaret Knight, tennis tournament director. “I’m hoping that tennis is a sport that Native people can become interested in and that it will become a sport for the entire family.”

Above and lower left: Athletes compete at the previous NAITA games. The Jim Thorpe games will take the place of the NAITA games this year.

This year, however, the tennis tournament will be a part of a larger focus – honoring Thorpe’s historic contributions to the sporting world. And in that spirit, the Games will aim to build those positive aspects in its competitors, especially younger ones. “The Native American communities know the importance and value of supporting healthy lifestyle choices for their youth. Some of the many benefits of the Games will include promoting leadership development, increasing cultural awareness and most importantly, motivating young people to achieve great things,” said Annetta Abbott, Executive Director of the Jim Thorpe Games. “Our young people are not only the leaders of the future; they are the leaders of today.” Proceeds from the Games will benefit the Jim Thorpe Bright Path Youth Programs that include Jim Thorpe All-Star Games, Children’s Challenge, Artfest and the statewide Red Ribbon Week. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the “Awakening the Spirit” Native American Diabetes Awareness and Prevention program of the American Diabetes Association. For more information, visit the Jim Thorpe Games website: www.jimthorpegames.com. CrossCourt

Spring 2012 //

The Jim Thorpe Games will feature elite athletes from around the United States, and the tennis event will be no different. One of the names to watch will also be one of the youngest competitors in the field: 15-year-old Austin Williams, who lives in Wichita, Kansas, and trains in Kansas City, Missouri. Williams is of Cherokee heritage and will participate in the Games for the first time.

The Jim Thorpe Games tennis tournament will take the place of the North American Indian Tennis Association (NAITA) Championships, which are held annually each Memorial Day weekend. The event has frequently been held in the Missouri Valley section and will return to it in 2013, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

WILLIAMS HOPES TO MAKE MARK AT JIM THORPE GAMES

missourivalley.usta.com

“I’m excited,” Williams told the Indian Country Today Media Network. “I’ve never played in it before. I think it will be fun to see some of the other Native American games along with my sport.” The high school sophomore has made an impact in the USTA Missouri Valley junior circuit, ranking as high as No. 6 in the Boys 16s division of the Missouri Valley section. He also ranks in the top 250 nationally in that same division. Williams maintains aspirations of playing tennis in college and is currently interested in such high-profile schools as Michigan, Pepperdine, Florida, Texas and Tennessee.

On Court With ... Anthony

A

nthony Perkins is quite familiar with the 10 and Under Tennis movement here in the United States. As a child, Perkins grew up learning tennis in a similar system in the United Kingdom – known there as “Short Tennis” – and is now working to help young kids here develop their games. As the Director of Junior Tennis at Midtown Athletic Club in Overland Park, Kansas, Perkins is implementing programs that fully embrace 10 and Under Tennis. He spoke with the USTA Missouri Valley about his approach and how learning tennis in a modified format made him a better player. CrossCourt: Tell us a little bit about your tennis background and how you got involved in the game. Anthony Perkins: I started playing tennis around age four in the United Kingdom because my whole family plays. I started out playing a few tournaments at under-10 and then, by under-12s, I was part of the Junior National Team. At age 16, I moved to a Tennis Center of Excellence in London to train full-time and go to school. When I graduated high school I traveled all over the world, playing lower satellites and playing professional club tennis in Germany. I wasn’t doing so well on the tour, so I decided to come to the United States and took a scholarship at Drake University in Iowa. I played for four years at Drake and then took over as the coach there for a season before working as the Junior Director at Aspen Athletic Club for about five years. In 2009, I decided to move to Kansas City and took the role of Director of Junior Tennis at Midtown Athletic Club in Overland Park, Kansas. You grew up in England and learned to play tennis with a method similar to 10 and Under Tennis here in the U.S. How did that shape your development as a player? Back in the late 1980s it was called “Short Tennis,” and my mother actually used to teach classes in a church hall, so I went along and played with them. We had state and national championships with it on a 42-foot court using a foam ball. I went to the national championships and was lucky 34

enough to be selected to do a demonstration at Wimbledon in 1988 with the red ball. [Learning this way] helped for a couple of reasons. First, I could play games, which meant it was more fun so I kept going back. More importantly, it helped me become a better tactical player since I was able to work more on playing out points as opposed to technique.

How did you get involved in teaching tennis? When I was playing at Drake, the men’s coach there had us help out with lessons and camps, and when he left I took over for him. I chose to go into teaching as opposed to collegiate coaching after coaching 16s Zonals. I found that you get to make more of a difference with kids when you start them young as opposed to coaching 20-year-olds in college.

missourivalley.usta.com

Why do you think that using a modified play format like 10 and Under Tennis is important for the development of young players? Because it’s fun! It allows us to play more with the kids and it allows the kids an environment in which they can learn for themselves, as opposed to us simply telling them what to do. It’s like a science experiment; you never really know what’s going to happen. It allows for us teaching professionals to really get involved with each student individually. And it makes players so much more tactically aware as they find out what their strengths and weaknesses are by playing. We see kids come in and play tennis on their first day. That never happened before. What types of events and tournaments do you host at your club for 10 and Under Tennis players, and what has the response been from the players and parents? We run an in-house Grand Slam circuit (US Open, Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon) for each level – red, orange, green – which has proven very popular with the kids and parents. Also, we recently had a parent-child orange court tournament where parents had to use 25-inch racquets and play on the smaller court with their kids. At Midtown, we have permanent lines on all of our courts, which allows us to go back and forth easily. We hosted two sanctioned 10 and Under Tennis tournaments last year, and will host a 10 and Under Tennis individual championship for the Missouri Valley in June, along

with a Tennis Play Day in March. We also did a “QuickStart Tennis, pizza and a movie” night for the kids a couple of months ago. What advice would you have for other teaching pros who may be hesitant to use 10 and Under Tennis and break from the more traditional methods of instructions? First of all, just put lines down on all your courts. That way you don’t have any excuses. And second, don’t interfere with the players as much as you think you should; allow them to find out things for themselves. They are much more likely to retain information if they think that they figured it out for themselves. Create a positive, fun learning environment and don’t be afraid to be a kid yourself. And finally, use the same equipment that the kids are supposed to use because they will be more likely to use the correct equipment if we show that we can use it, too. What do you like to do when you’re not playing tennis? I watch a lot of soccer from England, hang out with my wife, Emily, and my dog, Oliver. - Compiled By Eli Gieryna

Join the celebration! Host a turnkey Youth Registration event this March and be a part of the USTA's largest youth tennis recruitment effort - and grow your business. Sign up kids for Spring and Summer tennis programs and show parents how the game has been sized right for kids.

Play Days are events designed to introduce kids to competition in a lowpressure setting where results are not documented. These events provide kids with the opportunity to continue to develop and enhance their skills. From beginners to more experienced players, a Play Day is a welcoming way for kids to experience the social and competitive aspects of tennis.

A Kids’ Tennis Club is a great way for kids to be introduced to tennis in a safe, open-play setting at local schools, parks, youth centers and tennis facilities. These clubs offer kids the opportunity to have fun, gain confidence and meet new friends, while enhancing their social and physical development.

Participants can be of any playing level, from aspiring novice to seasoned professional, giving everyone an equal opportunity to advance. Sock Wins $10k Futures Title in Florida While much of the tennis world was focused Down Under in early January, Jack Sock was keeping his sights set not-so-far south at the $10,000 Plantation Open in Plantation, Florida. In an effort to grind out some victories on the Futures circuit and build up his game at the start of his first full professional season, Sock stayed stateside in January rather than travel the Australian circuit. The effort paid off on Sunday, as he won his second professional singles title -- and his first since 2009 -- with a 6-1, 7-6(5) win over Aussie teenager Jason Kubler in the championship match. The Missouri Valley teen breezed through the draw during the week, winning five matches without dropping a set. He upset third-seeded Benjamin Balleret 7-6(7), 7-5 in the quarterfinals before topping Matwe Middelkoop 6-3, 4-1(ret.) in the semifinals. That set up Sock for his title match against Kubler, another straight-set win. Washington University in St. Louis took home the crown at the district’s Tennis on Campus Winter Invite, held at Creve Coeur Racquet Club in St. Louis on January 28. Wash U topped Missouri in the final round by a 25-19 tally. The win follows Washington’s first-place finish at the USTA Missouri Valley Fall Invite in Kansas City in October. In total, eight teams competed at the event.

VISIT KANSAS.USTA.COM FOR DISTRICT NEWS AND INFO

2. Players must present a current USTA membership card, or new membership proof, prior to entry into Kansas District sanctioned tournaments.

7. Players must have a minimum of one win in the event they wish to be considered in for a ranking. The best FOUR results from Kansas District tournaments will be used for KDTA Adult Tournament rankings.

3. The USTA computer ranking system of points per round reached is used by the Kansas District for ranking procedures. This system allows for additional ranking points to be awarded for more participation by a player, as well as for participation in heavier weighted tournaments.

8. If a player is NTRP rated, they may not participate or be ranked in a level lower than their NTRP rating.

4. The ranking committee will determine which tournaments will be weighted heavier for ranking purposes. Additional points will be awarded for participation in one of these tournaments: Mid-Continent Open and the Topeka Jayhawk Open.

6. To be ranked in doubles, players must play at least two tournaments sanctioned by the Kansas District with the same partner.

9. If a player enters a tournament but finds they will not be able to participate, they must notify the tournament director at least one day prior to tournament start. Without notification, a no-show will not count positively towards the requirement of participation for rankings. 10. Any discrepancies involving rankings will be handled by the ranking committee.

2. To receive a KDTA junior doubles ranking a player must compete in at least 2 sanctioned district tournaments in the same age-group in the calendar year to be ranked in that age-group.

2012 Junior Rules SINGLES/DOUBLES: The USTA Missouri Valley’s Missouri district encourages junior players to use the following guidelines in order to receive an annual singles and an annual doubles district ranking (determined by the TennisLink Ranking System).

Please note that the endorsement spots for each age division into the sectional tournaments are one tournament even though the different age groups are played over multiple weekends.

1. Be domiciled within the USTA Missouri Valley - Missouri district.

7. The 2012 USTA Missouri Valley Rules and Regulations as well as the 2012 Rules and Regulations set forth in the Friend at Court will apply.

2. Hold current USTA membership.

For example: If you are twelve years old and have a birthday in June, you must play in the 14s Division entering any tournament in the month of June. You may elect to play in an older age division before you are required to. 4. To receive a USTA Missouri district ranking, a player must play three USTA Missouri district sanctioned tournaments or two USTA Missouri District tournaments and compete in one USTA Missouri Valley Sectional team event either representing the Missouri district or “filling in” for another district within the age group for which the player is attempting to receive a ranking in a calendar year. In the event that you are unable to compete in a USTA Missouri Valley Sectional Team event, the USTA Missouri Valley Summer Sectional Tournament may be used as the third tournament towards your Annual USTA Missouri district ranking.

6. A player may enter only one singles division and one doubles division per Missouri district Endorsement Tournament held for Segment I and Segment II.

SEGMENT II Boys/Girls 12 May 4-6, 2012 - Springfield, MO ID 405050212

9. 10 and Under Divisions. All 10 and under events will follow one of the three sets of guidelines listed below. The tournament homepage will state which type of event it is. All events must be scheduled as one day events. a) Green Tournaments • Court – The court shall be a 78-foot court. • Ball – The ball shall be a stage 1 (green) ball of any composition. • Racquet – There are no restrictions. • Scoring – The scoring shall be the best of three sets with a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of the third or the same as with the Orange tournaments. b) Orange Tournaments • Court – The court shall be a 60 x 21-foot court. • Ball – The ball shall be a stage 2 (orange) ball of any composition. • Racquet – The racquet may not exceed 25 inches. • Scoring – The scoring shall be the best of three short sets with a 7-point tiebreak in lieu of the third. c) Red Tournaments • Court-The court shall be a 36 x 18-foot court. • Ball-The ball shall be a stage 3 (red) ball of any composition. • Racquet-The racquet may not exceed 23 inches. • Scoring-The scoring shall be the best two out of three games. Each game shall consist of a 7-point tiebreak.

SEGMENT III Boys/Girls 12, 14, 16, 18 July 20-22, 2012 - Springfield, MO ID 405050312

JUNIORS

JUNIOR CAMPS

5. Will be penalized if he or she withdraws from a tournament after the draw has been made, for any reason, except illness, injury, or death in family. The USTA Missouri Valley Section Suspension Point System will be in effect at sanctioned tournaments.

8. Endorsement Tournaments scoring shall be the best of three sets with a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of the third set.

COMMUNITY TENNIS

10 and Under Tennis Registration Systems - Get Involved! 1. Register Your Facility!

For more info, contact Nick Hays: hays@movalley.usta.com (913) 322-4854

We want to make sure that you and your facility are listed as parents are searching for tennis programming in the area. As you are registering on the site, make sure you not only register your facility, but that you register yourself as an organizer. That way, there will be additional opportunities for parents to find you as they conduct their search.

Link: http://www.10andundertennis.com/organizers/register-facility/

2. Facility Assistance and Blended Line Reporting Whether you’re just starting out and dreaming of building a state-of-the-art multi-court tennis facility, you’re interested in 36’ and 60’ tennis courts; or you just want to figure out how to repair the cracked courts at the local park down the street, you’re in the right place – the USTA is here to help! Also, report your courts with blended lines for 10 and Under Tennis that did not go through the USTA’s National Line Grant process and they will be added to the USTA Section Dashboard.

Link: http://www.usta.com/facilities

3. Host a Recreational Coach or 10 and Under Tennis Workshop Are you looking to host a Recreational Coach Workshop or a Recreational 10 and Under Tennis Workshop? Find the ideal workshop for your needs by looking at a side by side comparison located through the link below.

Link: http://www.usta.com/Coaches-Organizers/On-Court Training/Workshop_Organizers/

4. Register USTA Kids’ Tennis Clubs A Kids’ Tennis Club is a program anyone can start that allows kids to sample tennis through supervised play and interactive activities. This program is a great way for kids to be introduced to tennis in a safe, open-play setting at local schools, parks, youth centers and tennis facilities. These “clubs” offer kids the opportunity to have fun, gain confidence and meet new friends, all while enhancing their social and physical development. Register through the link below and receive marketing resources!

Link: http://www.usta.com/kidstennisclubs

5. Register Play Days Play Days are events designed to introduce kids to competition in a low-pressure setting where results are not documented. These events provide kids of all levels the opportunity to continue to develop and enhance their skills and are a welcoming way to experience the social and competitive aspects of tennis. Organized by skill level, kids have the chance to gain additional play experience through a rotation of opponents and short, continuous matches over a two- to three-hour period. Play Days promote a sense of achievement through a fun and spirited atmosphere. Register your Play Day and receive a Starter Kit for the first Play Day, discounts on Play Day awards and prizes, downloadable participant certificates, draw sheets, flyer and organizer materials.

Link: http://www.usta.com/tennisplaydays

6. USTA Junior Tournaments and Jr. Team Tennis Playing in Junior Tournaments helps test your kids’ skills – while making new friends and having fun. Kids can take their game as far as they want it to go – high school, college or the pros. Host a Junior Tournament today or find one in your area. Playing tennis is always more fun with friends, so Jr. Team Tennis connects kids by having them play on teams in local leagues where they can advance to a national championship. This is a fun way to learn and play the game.
