IN YOUR FACE is a fashion editorial that responds to a specific identity that society has created. The ‘tomboy girl’ has challenged society’s expectation of girls and the normal conventions of fashion. Speaking as someone who has been categorised as a tomboy, the project has a personal resonance. The tomboy style gives a sense of confidence, protection and self which contributes to a powerful demeanour; a retaliation and defense against the prejudice society has already given them.
Both this attitude and the clothing brings unwanted negative attention, especially out in public. A characteristic of streetwear that stands out is oversized and baggy clothing. The photographer’s personal collection of streetwear was sourced to style the models.
IN YOUR FACE speaks for the girls who have been victims of this prejudice and to remind people that femininity is not just dresses and skirts. Wearing men’s clothing does not make you any less of a woman.
