MENSAGEM MESSAGE

este tempo complexo, a capacidade de resistência demonstrada e o historial de prestígio alcançado ao longo de quarenta anos, levam-nos a acreditar que o empenho, o trabalho, e a força de vontade da Academia permitirão reforçar a presença da Universidade na região, no país e no mundo. O Futuro convoca as Universidades para a internacionalização do ensino, da investigação e da transferência de conhecimento. O Futuro convoca o esbatimento das fronteiras, promove a mobilidade de estudantes, de professores, de investigadores, o desenvolvimento dos curricula e a aprendizagem digital, bem como o reforço de parcerias e capacidades institucionais. Hoje, mais do que nunca, é preciso delinear novos caminhos que reforcem o papel da UTAD na valorização do conhecimento e a sua presença no território e no mundo. s President of UTAD’s General Council, I have no difficulty in stating that 2014 was a good year for our University. In terms of account consolidation, it was known that the challenge was enormous, and it was notably surpassed, thanks to the efforts of everyone, and our University gained prestige. Another major challenge had to do with the creation of a very deep cooperation platform with the Universities of Porto and Minho. It has also been achieved. The Strategic Plan suggests that the University must bear an active role in the development of the Region. Hereupon it was important to institutionalize ways of cooperating with the most relevant entities. It was another goal that was achieved through the “Letter of Commitment” signed with representatives of municipalities, business associations, and Higher Education Institutions. The year 2015 will continue to present challenges, but the balance already acquired and the proven track record are the factors which give hope that UTAD’s path of progress will continue in a sustainable way José Albino da Silva Peneda General Council President

n these complex times, the resilience demonstrated and the history of prestige achieved over forty years, lead us to believe that the commitment, work, and the willpower of the Academy will allow us to reinforce the presence of the University in the region, in the country, and in the world. The Future calls universities to the internationalization of education, research and knowledge transfer. The Future calls for the blurring of boundaries, promotes the mobility of students, teachers and researchers, the development of curricula and digital learning, and the strengthening of partnerships and institutional capacities. Today, more than ever, we need to devise new ways to enhance the role of the UTAD in the promotion of knowledge and its presence in the territory and the world. The University does not end at the limit of our vision, but in the ability to imagine, to design and to dream it.

a qualidade de Presidente do Conselho Geral da UTAD não tenho qualquer dificuldade em afirmar que 2014 foi um bom ano para a nossa Universidade. Em termos de consolidação de contas, era sabido que o desafio era enorme e foi ultrapassado de forma notável, graças ao esforço de todos, e a nossa Universidade ganhou prestígio. Outro dos grandes desafios tinha a ver com a criação de uma plataforma de cooperação muito profunda com as Universidades do Porto e do Minho. Também foi atingido. O Plano Estratégico aponta para que a Universidade assuma um papel interventivo no desenvolvimento da Região. Nesse sentido, era importante institucionalizar formas de cooperação com as entidades mais relevantes. Foi outro objetivo atingido, através da “Carta de Compromissos”, assinada com representantes dos municípios, associações empresariais e instituições do ensino superior. O ano de 2015 continuará a apresentar desafios, mas o balanço já adquirido e as provas já dadas são o fator que alimenta a esperança de que o caminho de progresso da UTAD vai prosseguir de forma sustentada.

PLANEAMENTO E ESTRATÉGIA UM NOVO CICLO DE AFIRMAÇÃO E CRESCIMENTO Na UTAD, o ano de 2014, iniciou-se sob o mote “Semear as mudanças”, simbolizando o início de um ciclo de quatro anos, materializado no seu Plano Estratégico. O Plano de Atividades traduziu o compromisso com a continuidade e consolidação das mudanças e dos projetos iniciados, tendo-se registado progressos em todas frentes. Merece destaque o reposicionamento da UTAD nos contextos universitário e do desenvolvimento regional, sendo de sublinhar o processo relativo à constituição do Consórcio UNorte.pt, englobando as Universidades do Porto, do Minho e a UTAD, e a dinamização da “Carta de Compromissos para o Desenvolvimento de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro”. Mas muitos outros progressos se podem destacar. No ensino: a estabilização do número de alunos de 1º ciclo e o aumento do número de alunos dos 2º e 3º ciclos, com um acréscimo global de estudantes na ordem dos 5%; a captação de alunos internacionais ao abrigo do novo estatuto, traduzida numa quota nacional de 10%; a liderança na captação de candidaturas ao Programa +Superior, com 13% da quota nacional; a creditação de 90% dos cursos avaliados pela A3Es; a redução de 589 horas de serviço letivo, resultante de um trabalho de reorganização e otimização das unidades curriculares, com impacto positivo na carga horária dos docentes; e o apoio social aos estudantes através dos SASUTAD, que ocupam a 2ª posição nacional na tramitação de bolsas de estudo do ensino superior.

Na investigação: três centros de investigação foram avaliados com Muito Bom; o crescimento da produção científica referenciada internacionalmente; a definição de áreas estratégicas de investigação; e a reorganização dos centros de investigação, aumentando em 10% a taxa de participação dos docentes. Na valorização do conhecimento: o lançamento de um conjunto de projetos estruturantes nos domínios da desmaterialização e gestão documental, a valorização do território, a cooperação para a inovação e redes de informação, assim como um progresso significativo na construção do Parque de Ciência e Tecnologia, Regia-Douro Park; o reforço da cooperação com instituições e empresas, com celebração de numerosos protocolos e dinamização de iniciativas e projetos de apoio ao empreendedorismo (Rede EmpreenDouro, Tâmega Sousa Empreendedor, Projetos Tua e Sabor) e de estágios de alunos em contexto de empresas e instituições. Nas infraestruturas: a execução do plano de reordenamento do campus, permitindo nele concentrar todas as Escolas, com exceção da Escola Superior de Enfermagem, libertando os edifícios do Ex-DRM e do CIFOP; a requalificação de espaços letivos, laboratórios e Centro Interpretativo do Jardim Botânico; e a apresentação de candidaturas para a melhoria das infraestruturas científicas e tecnológicas. Na gestão: a diminuição da despesa com recursos humanos e a renegociação/cessação de contratos de prestação de serviços, permitindo o equilíbrio de contas, fundamental para a credibilidade da UTAD e do seu plano; e a reafectação de 20% dos funcionários, não docentes, a serviços e estruturas onde eram necessários, através da mobilidade interna de funções. Na comunicação e cultura: a criação de uma nova dinâmica no relacionamento com a comunicação social, traduzida numa presença mais continuada e intensa da UTAD, bem como o fortalecimento da participação nas redes sociais; a realização de um amplo programa comemorativo dos 40 anos do Ensino Superior em Vila Real e no interior norte, incluindo iniciativas académicas, científicas, culturais e desportivas. Adicionalmente, mas não menos importante, a UTAD tem-se transformado, passo a passo, numa instituição mais participativa e transparente, através da aplicação, na prática, dos valores consignados no seu Plano Estratégico, nomeadamente no que se refere à importância das pessoas e à lógica de governação em que assenta a sua gestão. PLANNING AND STRATEGY

A NEW CYCLE OF ASSERTION AND GROWTH The year 2014 in UTAD began under the motto “To sow the changes”, symbolizing the start of a four-year cycle, embodied in its strategic plan. The Activity Plan translated the commitment to continuity and consolidation of changes and projects initiated, and there has been progress on all fronts. It should be noted the repositioning of UTAD in the university environment as well as the regional development front, as shown by the establishment of the UNorte.pt Consortium, comprising the Universities of Porto, Minho and UTAD, and the promotion of the “Commitment Letter for the development of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro”. But many other developments can be highlighted. In teaching: the stabilization of the number of 1st cycle students and the increase in the number of students from the 2nd and 3rd cycles, with an overall increase of students of about 5%; attracting international students under the new statute, translated into a national quota of 10%; the leadership in applications to the +Superior Program, with 13% of the national quota; the crediting of 90% of the courses evaluated by A3Es; the reduction of 589 hours of teaching service, resulting from a reorganization of work and optimization of curricular units, with a positive impact on the workload of faculty members; and social support to students through SASUTAD, occupying the 2nd national position in the processing of higher education scholarships. In research: three research centres were evaluated with Very Good; the growth of the scientific production internationally referenced; the definition of strategic research areas; and the reorganization of the research centres, increasing the rate of participation of faculty members by 10%.

In infrastructures: the implementation of the campus redevelopment plan, which allowed us to concentrate all schools, except for the Nursing School, freeing the buildings of the former DRM and CIFOP; the upgrading of academic spaces, laboratories and the Interpretive Centre of the Botanical Garden; and the presentation of proposals for the improvement of scientific and technological infrastructures. In management: a decrease in expenditure on human resources and the renegotiation/termination of service contracts, allowing for an accounts balance, which is vital to the credibility of UTAD and its plan; and the reallocation of 20% of non-teaching staff to services and structures in which they were needed, through internal mobility. In communication and culture: the creation of a new dynamic in the relationship with the media, translated into a more continuous and intense presence of UTAD, as well as the strengthening of our participation in the social networks; conducting a wide commemorative program to celebrate 40 years of higher education in Vila Real and the northern hinterland, including academic, scientific, cultural and sports initiatives. Additionally, but not less important, UTAD has been transforming, step by step, into a more participative and transparent institution through the practical application of the values set out in its Strategic Plan, in particular as regards the importance of people and the governance logic underpinning its management. In the valorisation of knowledge: the launch of a number of infrastructure projects in the fields of dematerialisation and document management, territorial development, cooperation for innovation and information networks, as well as a significant progress in the construction of the Science and Technology Park, Regia-Douro Park; strengthening the cooperation with institutions and businesses, with the celebration of numerous protocols, and proactive initiatives and entrepreneurship support projects (EmpreenDouro Network, Tâmega Sousa Entrepreneur, Projects Tua and Sabor), as well as internships for students in the context of businesses and institutions.

ENSINO

TEACHING O ano de 2014 trouxe novidades em termos de acesso ao Ensino Universitário: o programa +Superior incentivou os alunos do litoral a candidatarem-se a instituições das regiões do interior; o programa Retomar incentivou o reingresso de ex-alunos desempregados com menos de 29 anos que, entretanto, haviam desistido dos seus cursos; o Estatuto de Aluno Internacional permitiu o ingresso de candidatos de países extracomunitários. Ao nível da oferta educativa do 1º ciclo, os cursos de Ciências Florestais e de Tecnologias de Apoio e Acessibilidades abriram, pela primeira vez, vagas no Concurso Nacional de Acesso. Em 2015, outros cursos de 1º ciclo e de Pós-Graduação irão fortalecer a oferta educativa, nomeadamente em termos de fixação de alunos, destacando-se o novo curso de Mestrado em Enologia e Viticultura, bem como o de Engenharia Alimentar.

Igualmente em termos de provas de acesso, foram aceites as alterações para os cursos de 1º ciclo em Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (substituição da prova Matemática A por Matemática B) e dos Cursos de Engenharia Agronómica e Engenharia Zootécnica (permitindo que o par Matemática e Biologia/Geologia possa ser alternativa ao par Matemática e Física/Química). Iniciou-se, igualmente, o Ano Preparatório, especialmente concebido para alunos internacionais que necessitem da aprendizagem da língua portuguesa e solidificação dos conhecimentos em Matemática, Biologia, Física e Química. Para facilitar as relações dos alunos com a instituição e cursos, durante 2014 foi desenvolvida uma aplicação móvel para alunos, com vista a facilitar a disponibilidade de informação, em alternativa ao SIDE; a articulação entre o SIDE e os Serviços Académicos foi aprofundada; e a fase de implementação da Secretaria Virtual de Alunos incluiu a possibilidade de requisição e emissão de certidões por via eletrónica. The year 2014 brought news in terms of access to university education: the +Superior program encouraged students from the coast to apply to Hinterland institutions; the Retomar program encouraged the re-entry of unemployed ex-students under 29 years who had given up on their degrees; the International Student Statute allowed the entry of candidates from non-EU countries. At the level of educational provision for the 1st cycle, the Forest Sciences and Support and Accessibility Technologies degrees opened, for the first time, vacancies in the National Access Competition. In 2015, other 1st cycle and Post-Graduate courses will strengthen the educational provision, particularly in terms of securing students, especially the new Master’s course in Oenology and Viticulture and the one on Food Engineering. Also in terms of access exams, changes to the 1st cycle courses in Information and Communication Technologies (Mathematics A is replaced by mathematics B), Agricultural Engineering and Animal Science (allowing that the pair Mathematics and Biology/ Geology may be alternative to the pair Mathematics and Physics/ Chemistry) have been accepted. The Year Zero also began, specially designed for international students who need to learn the portuguese language and solidify their knowledge of mathematics, biology, physics and chemistry. To ease students’ relationship with the institution and courses, during 2014 a mobile application was developed in order to facilitate the availability of information as an alternative to SIDE; the articulation between SIDE and the Academic Services was deepened; and the implementation phase of the Student Virtual Secretariat included the possibility of electronic requisition and issue of certificates. INVESTIGAÇÃO O ano de 2014 foi marcado pela grande incerteza do futuro da investigação a nível nacional, motivada pelo processo de avaliação realizado pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), cujos resultados finais foram conhecidos a 22 de dezembro. Das sete unidades de I&D que foram a concurso, tendo a UTAD como instituição principal, três foram avaliadas com Muito Bom (CITAB, CETRAD e CIDESD), duas com Bom (CQVR e CECAV), uma com Suficiente (CGBA) e uma com Fraco (CEL). Estes resultados vieram reforçar a inequívoca necessidade de procurar novas fontes de financiamento da investigação, nomeadamente ao nível de programas europeus, nacionais e regionais. Neste domínio, verificou-se um aumento do número de projetos submetidos fora da égide da FCT, sendo de destacar um projeto Teaming, submetido sob liderança da UTAD.

Apesar deste período de incerteza, os dados apontam para um crescimento do número de publicações indexadas em base de dados, tendo estes resultados um efeito direto no posicionamento da UTAD do ponto de vista nacional e internacional: a UTAD subiu em 2014, a nível mundial, 65 lugares no ranking SCIMAGO, estando agora mais perto do 8º lugar, no contexto nacional. No que diz respeito à desmaterialização, foi dado mais um passo para a criação de um sistema integrado de gestão de ciência e tecnologia, através da realização da atualização tecnológica do repositório da UTAD, que permite uma maior integração com outras plataformas, nomeadamente DeGóis e ORCID.

A estrutura de apoio ao empreendedorismo da UTAD (nest@utad) foi responsável pela gestão da Incubadora de Empresas, que conta atualmente com cerca de 15 projetos e empresas, bem como pelos Programas de Apoio Empreendedorismo no Tua e no Sabor, ambos promovidos pela EDP em articulação com os Municipios. Fez parte da equipa técnica do “Programa de Empreendedorismo em Meio Rural”, uma iniciativa da Secretaria de Estado da Alimentação e da Investigação Agro-Alimentar, que decorreu no Alto Minho, dinamizou a 2ª edição do prémio “Douro Empreendedor no âmbito da Rede Douro Empreendedor, e prestou assessoria na criação e lançamento da rede Tâmega Sousa Empreendedor e do respetivo prémio. Internamente, além do apoio continuado aos empreendedores no desenvolvimento das suas ideias de negócio, maturação e desenvolvimento empresarial, foi lançado o Plano de Soft-Skills (em susbtituição das Tardes do Empreendedor), com o intuito de melhorar e aprofundar as competências dos alunos da UTAD. Tendo como objectivo a promoção do empreendedorismo, a equipa do nest@utad participou também em seminários de cursos da UTAD, em workshops de Escolas e Municípios e em eventos de Associações Juvenis, bem como com a Fundação EDP no Programa “EDP Barragens Solidárias”, através do apoio voluntário de alunos da UTAD a Instituições Particulares de Solidariedade Social (IPSS) da região na preparação e submisão das suas candidaturas.

O Parque contempla uma Incubadora de Empresas, um Centro de Negócios (Douro Business Center), um Pólo Tecnológico de Excelência e Lotes Industriais, conta com múltiplas valências de suporte a empreendedores e empresas, projetos em-

Sublinhe-se que laboratório de Análises de Solos e Plantas da UTAD é líder na região Norte no que toca as análises no domínio da Química Agrícola, tratando de cerca de 10 mil amostras de solos e 3 mil amostras de plantas por ano. Com os investimentos do LabQuality, que complementaram os investimentos do projeto PromoAgro, este Laboratório ficou dotado de infraestruturas completamente renovadas e em condições de iniciar uma nova fase de atividades no domínio agroambiental.

STRUCTURING PROJECTS & SUPPORT FOR DEVELOPMENT

The structure supporting entrepreneurship at UTAD (nest@ UTAD) was responsible for managing the Business Incubator, which currently has about 15 companies and projects in its facilities, as well as the Entrepreneurship Support Programs in the Tua and Sabor, both promoted by EDP in conjunction with the municipalities. It was also part of the technical team of the “Entrepreneurship in Rural Areas Programme”, an initiative of the Food and Agro Food Research State Department, held at the Alto Minho. the 2nd edition of the “Douro Entrepreneur” Award was also promoted within the Douro Entrepreneurship Network, and advisory services were provided regarding the creation and launch of the Tamega Sousa Entrepreneurship network and respective award. Internally, in addition to continued support to entrepreneurs in developing and maturing their business ideas and projects, the Soft-Skills Plan was launched (replacing the Entrepreneur Afternoons), in order to improve and develop the skills of UTAD students. With a view to promoting entrepreneurship, the nest@ UTAD team participated in UTAD courses and seminars, in schools and Municipalities Workshops and in Youth Associations events, and also in the “EDP Solidary Dams” Programme with the EDP Foundation, with voluntary support of UTAD students to the region’s social solidarity institutions in the preparation and submisão of their applications.

REGIA-DOURO PARK – SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PARK The Regia-Douro Park – Vila Real Science and Technology Park - focuses on the fields of agri-food, agro-industrial, oenology, viticulture, green economy, environmental improvement and agro-environmental technologies. Promoted by the municipality of Vila Real, by UTAD and Portuspark - Technology Parks and Incubators Network, it takes on a role as a pillar of integrated economic development, investing in UTAD’s skills and the region’s resources, constituting a new business centrality in Douro. The Park includes a Business Incubator, a Business Centre (Douro Business Centre), a Technology Excellence and Industrial Lots Hub,

and gives multi-faceted support to entrepreneurs and companies, business projects, national and international investors, research promotion, and the development and transfer of technology. Cofinanced by the European Union through the ON.2 Operational Programme, the Science and Technology Hub of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro brings together the Regia-Douro Park (Vila Real Science and Technology Park) the Brigantia Ecopark (Science and Technology Park of Bragança), the Portuspark Network (Science and Technology Parks and Incubators Network of the North of Portugal) and the municipalities of Vila Real and Bragança.

NEW INVESTMENTS The Project Support Office, in conjunction with the Research Laboratories and Centres, developed an intense activity in the preparation and submission of applications, with a view to improving the scientific and technological infrastructure at UTAD, creating conditions to substantially increase its scientific production and the capacity for innovation and knowledge transfer. A set of projects was funded by ON.2 – The New North, among which “ENOEXEL - From Vineyard to Wine: Targeting grape and wine excellency, “INNOFOOD - INNOvation in the FOOD sector through the valorisation of food and agro-food by-products” and “Sustainsys - Environmentally Sustainable Agro-Forestry Systems”, which together allowed the hiring of 45 fellows; also the PromoAgro Project, which supported the restoration of the Soil and Plant Analysis Laboratory and the creation of the Flour and Baking Laboratory, and the LabQuality - Adequacy and Certification Laboratories, under the “Agricultural Science and Technologies Centres Network in the Northern Region”, involving the three northern universities (Porto, Minho and UTAD). It should be noted that the Soil and Plant Analysis Laboratory at UTAD is leader in the North in what concerns analysis in the field of Agricultural Chemistry, treating about 10,000 soil samples and 3000 plant samples per year. With the investments of LabQuality, which complemented the PromoAgro project investments, this Laboratory was provided with completely renewed infrastructures and is able to start a new phase of activities in the agri-environment field.

AÇÃO SOCIAL MUDAR PARA QUÊ? OS SASUTAD NA PROCURA DA GARANTIA DE SERVIÇOS DE QUALIDADE O ensino superior em Vila Real faz 40 anos. A ação social e os estudantes do ensino superior na cidade de Vila Real, também! Os SASUTAD nasceram em 1993, sucedendo aos Serviços Sociais da UTAD, aos Serviços Sociais do Instituto Universitário de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, criados em 1979, e aos Serviços Sociais do Instituto Politécnico de Vila Real, com origem em 1974/1975. Fizemos em 2014 os míticos 40 anos. Mas a antiguidade não nos confere o estatuto que procuramos. Queremos ser um serviço que garanta a satisfação das necessidades dos estudantes, dos trabalhadores e da comunidade académica. Ao longo dos últimos anos, muitas melhorias foram feitas.

Em 2009 elaborou-se o projeto de unificação dos serviços centrais e em 2010 procedeu-se à sua remodelação, a fim de garantir condições de acolhimento dos estudantes, um serviço de informações, atendimento e tesouraria com conforto e acessibilidade que pretende cultivar o espírito de equipa, o trabalho em parceria e a partilha. Inaugurámos o espaço de restauração denominado “Restaurante Panorâmico”, que resultou do projeto de ampliação da Cantina de Prados, cuja sala de refeições beneficiou também do projeto, tendo sido reequipada com mobiliário renovado. Durante o ano de 2010, foi criado o espaço de receção do parque residencial Além-rio, passando a existir um serviço de apoio às unidades de alojamento, com o intuito de receber e apoiar a estadia dos estudantes portugueses e estrangeiros.

Em 2011 procedemos à remodelação dos espaços das cozinhas, uma área de trabalho porventura invisível ao público, mas determinante para a prestação de serviços de qualidade. Foi ainda criado um projeto de redução de resíduos e adotadas práticas de sustentabilidade, com a colocação de centros de reciclagem (ecopontos). Em 2012 foi dada prioridade a obras de remodelação do bloco B do parque residencial Além-rio. Já em 2013 foi feita a reabertura do centro de cópias, em exploração direta, e a remodelação do snack-bar do edifício das Ciências Agrárias. Em 2014 foi executada a remodelação do bar do Complexo Pedagógico; foi encerrado o bar n.º 1 (Pedrinhas); foi aberto ao público o snack-bar do edifício do Bloco de Laboratórios, foram reparadas as coberturas do Bloco C e D, e deu-se início a atividades desportivas e de lazer no espaço do CIFOP, estando em curso um projeto de remodelação total do espaço. Em suma, os SASUTAD, na senda da implementação do seu Sistema de Gestão da Qualidade (SGQ), têm como preocupação, entre outras, a satisfação dos seus clientes e a eficiência na prestação do serviço. SOCIAL SUPPORT WHY CHANGE? SASUTAD IN SEARCH FOR QUALITY SERVICE ASSURANCE

In 2014 we celebrated the mythical 40 years. But seniority does not give us the status we seek. We want to be a service that guarantees the needs of students, workers and the academic community. Over the past few years, many improvements have been made. In 2009 we prepared the unification project of the central services and in 2010 they were remodelled in order to guarantee conditions for the reception of students, an information service, customer service and a treasury with comfort and affordability which intends to cultivate team spirit, partnership working and sharing. We opened the “Panoramic Restaurant”, which resulted from the expansion project of the Prados Canteen, whose dining room also benefited from the project, having been refitted with new furniture. During 2010, the reception space of the Além-rio residential park was created, which includes a service to support housing units, in order to receive and back up the stay of Portuguese and foreign students.

In 2011 we carried out a remodelling of the kitchen spaces, an area perhaps invisible to the public, but crucial to the provision of quality services. A waste reduction project was also created, and the adoption of sustainable practices was implemented by placing recycling centres (ecopoints). In 2012 priority was given to B block of the Além-rio residential park. In 2013 the copy centre was reopened with direct exploration and the snack bar of the Agricultural Sciences building was remodelled. In 2014 the renovation of the Teaching Complex bar was completed, and the ner1 bar (Pedrinhas) was closed. The snack bar of the Laboratories Block building was opened to the public, a repair of the C and D Block covers was done, and sports and leisure activities began within the former CIFOP, and there is an ongoing total space remodelling project. In short, SASUTAD, further to the implementation of its Quality Management System (QMS), is concerned, among other issues, with customer satisfaction and efficiency in service delivery. E, quando eles se levantam para ir à vida, tiro da estante um velho exemplar de A Sereia, de Camilo Castelo Branco, publicado em 1865 (declaro aqui o ano da publicação para que se saiba que já então havia essa ideia de que ‘o tempo já não é o que era’), e vou direito à primeira página do romance, que entende com o assunto: Estamos em 15 de Maio de 1762. Naquele tempo, os dias de Maio, no Porto, eram temperados, alegres, perfumados, encantadores. A Primavera, há cem anos, aparecia quando o calendário a dava. Ninguém saía da sua casa às cinco horas de uma tarde cálida de Maio, com um casaco de reserva no braço para resistir ao frio das sete horas [...]. A distinção visa reconhecer “o trabalho, a dedicação e carinho com que Professores e alunos do curso Comunicação e Multimédia da UTAD, têm abraçado em projetos que muito dignificam o Caramulo, revivendo o passado, estreitando laços que poderão ser uma mais-valia para projetar o futuro desta maravilhosa Vila Serrana. Fortalecer também as boas relações institucionais, no sentido de em conjunto, contribuirmos para a promoção das potencialidades do Caramulo”. ABERTURA DO ANO INTERNACIONAL DA CRISTALOGRAFIA Em Portugal, a abertura das celebrações do Ano Internacional da Cristalografia foi realizada a 12 de março, na aula magna da UTAD. Esta efeméride foi dinamizada internacionalmente pela UNESCO e a pela União Internacional de Cristalografia. O evento foi promovido pela Comissão Nacional da UNESCO, em parceria com o Comité Português para o Programa Internacional das Geociências da UNESCO, o Comité Português Matemática do Planeta Terra e a UTAD, e teve o apoio da Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. A cerimónia contou com a presença da UNESCO, através de Jean-Paul Ngome Abiaga, do Reitor da UTAD, António Fontainhas Fernandes e da Presidente da Comissão Nacional da UNESCO, Embaixadora Ana Martinho, entre outros representantes das entidades organizadoras. OPENING OF THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF CRYSTALLOGRAPHY In Portugal, the opening of the celebrations of the International Year of Crystallography was held on the 12th March in the aula magna of UTAD. This anniversary has been internationally energized by UNESCO and the International Union of Crystallography. The event was sponsored by the UNESCO National Commission, in partnership with the Portuguese Committee for the UNESCO International Program of Geosciences, the Portuguese Committee for Mathematics of Planet Earth and UTAD, and had the support of the Foundation for Science and Technology. The ceremony was attended by UNESCO, through Jean-Paul Ngome Abiaga, the Rector of UTAD, António Fontainhas Fernandes, and the President of the UNESCO National Commission, Ambassador Ana Martinho, among other representatives of the organizers. The five conferences were held concerning the relationship between Crystallography and Fundamental Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Geology), as well as a tribute to two imminent Portuguese crystallographers, Maria Ondina Figueiredo and José Lima-de-Faria; and the inauguration of the traveling exhibition “Crystallography in Fundamental Sciences”.

Crystallography has numerous applications and influences our daily lives, being very important for industries that depend on the creation and development of new products, such as food processing, aerospace, automotive, computer, electromechanical, pharmaceutical, and mining or cosmetics.

WHY A YEAR DEDICATED TO CRYSTALLOGRAPHY? Because it celebrates the centenary of the discovery of the diffraction of X-rays, honouring the pioneering work of Max von Laue and William Henry Bragg / William Lawrence Bragg. The International Year of Crystallography made the connection to the International Year of Light, to be celebrated in 2015.

DIA ABERTO 2014 JOVENS PREPARAM O SEU FUTURO DE OLHOS POSTOS NA UTAD A participação de cerca de 900 alunos do ensino secundário, oriundos de 25 escolas dos distritos de Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Braga e Porto, no Dia Aberto da UTAD, a 2 de abril, confirmou o sucesso de uma jornada que apostou em apresentar aos jovens estudantes as potencialidades de uma Universidade por onde pode passar o seu futuro. Para estes estudantes, o Dia Aberto da UTAD revelou-se uma experiência marcante e fascinante, pelas diferentes descobertas que proporcionou. Acompanhados por professores, visitaram departamentos, laboratórios e campos de ensaios, e viram exposições e filmes, entre outras, das cerca de 82 atividades disponíveis. Estes jovens ficaram, assim, a conhecer a oferta educativa da UTAD, investigação e experiências aqui desenvolvidas, assim como as saídas profissionais. A organização pertenceu à UTAD, em conjunto com a União das Associações de Pais e Encarregados de Educação das Escolas do Concelho de Vila Real.

OPEN DAY 2014 YOUNGSTERS LOOK UP TO UTAD WHILE PREPARING THEIR FUTURE The participation of about 900 high school students in the Open Day at UTAD, coming from 25 schools in the districts of Vila Real, Braganรงa, Viseu, Braga and Porto, on April 2nd, confirmed the success of a journey that bet on presenting to young students the potential of a university which they might attend in the future. For these students, the Open Day at UTAD proved to be a remarkable and fascinating experience, because of the various discoveries that it provided. Accompanied by teachers, they visited departments, laboratories and test fields, and saw exhibitions and films, among the 82 available activities. These young people became knowledgeable of the educational offer at UTAD, research and experiments developed here, as well as career opportunities. The organization belonged to UTAD, together with the Union of Parents and Guardians Associations of the Vila Real County Schools.

A terceira edição do Sound, Pictures and Multimedia (SPAM) realizou-se nos dias 13 e 14 de maio. Organizado por docentes e estudantes dos cursos de licenciatura e mestrado em Comunicação e Multimédia da UTAD, esta edição do SPAM incluiu um Concurso Nacional de Multimédia com o tema “A Minha Escola dava um Filme”, dirigido a todos os alunos do ensino secundário. Nesta edição participaram cerca de 600 alunos de escolas secundárias e profissionais de cinco distritos (Vila Real, Porto, Braga, Viseu e Guarda), acompanhados por professores. Participaram ainda várias empresas que fizeram apresentações sobre projetos de web, design e audiovisual. Estiveram presentes Miguel Gonçalves da SPARK Agency, a empresa GEN, vários Youtubers e antigos alunos de Comunicação e Multimédia, que

deram testemunho dos seus percursos profissionais. Foram ainda apresentados projetos de alunos atuais. No que respeita ao concurso “A Minha escola dava um filme”, que contou como membros do júri o realizador de cinema João Botelho e o jornalista da RTP Mário Augusto, foram a concurso cerca de 300 fotografias e mais de 30 vídeos, provenientes de todo o país. A Confraria do Mel e a UTAD promoveram um concurso nacional de mel para premiar a qualidade deste produto, bem como promover, valorizar e dar a conhecer duas das principais categorias de mel produzido em Portugal: Rosmaninho e Urze. Neste âmbito, as duas entidades realizaram, também, um curso de análise sensorial do mel (de provadores), com os formadores Paulo Russo Almeida (UTAD) e António Gomez Pajuelo (Universidad Complutense de Madrid).

No caso específico de Portugal, registamos que, se por um lado parecem estar cada vez mais secas, por outro, tem aumentado a frequência de episódios de precipitação intensa”, declara o investigador do CITAB, João Santos. O especialista espera também que, entre 2041 e 2070, se verifiquem mais extremos de precipitação e de temperatura em Portugal.

Trata-se de um novo serviço desenvolvido e disponibilizado pela UTAD que permite, de forma rápida e confortável, consultar avisos gerais, eventos, calendário académico, registo académico, avisos do curso, classificações, inscrições nas unidades curriculares, estado das propinas e inclui ainda a georreferenciação do campus da UTAD, entre outros dados.

The application “alunosUTAD” for tablets and smartphones is free and provides access to the academic data information system. This is a new service developed and made available by UTAD that allows the student to quickly and comfortably see general information, events, academic calendar, academic transcripts, degree warnings, ratings, enrolment in courses, state of tuition and also includes the geo-referencing of the UTAD campus, among other data.

O Fundo de Apoio Social (FAS) visa apoiar financeiramente “estudantes em comprovado estado de necessidade económica”. Esta iniciativa, inserida no âmbito da política de responsabilidade social da UTAD, pretende combater o abandono e insucesso escolares. O FAS é constituído pelas vertentes Subsídio de Emergência, em forma de prestação pecuniária ou material, atribuída ao estudante e isenta de qualquer taxa; ou Bolsa de Colaboração, traduzida em compensação monetária pela participação dos estudantes em atividades, projetos e ações levadas a cabo pela UTAD.

The Social Support Fund (FAS) aims to provide financial support to “students in a proven state of economic necessity.” This initiative, set in the context of the social responsibility policy of UTAD, aims to combat abandonment and school failure. RemotWatch - Alert and Monitoring System for Physical Structures is the technology that João Sousa, professor and researcher of ECT/UTAD, is developing and that will enable an innovative approach to the monitoring of critical infrastructures, to early detect potential risks. “Through the use of satellite imagery” millimetre displacements in dams, roads, bridges, or other structures at any point of the globe may be detected.” This technology will be a “means of monitoring and alert while allowing a detailed and frequent monitoring, increasing the safety conditions of these structures.”

MARÇOMARCH CEISDTAD begins activity in Sabrosa [2]

Após assinatura de um protocolo de colaboração entre o Exército Português, a UTAD e a Câmara Municipal de Sabrosa, o Centro de Estudos e Investigação de Segurança e Defesa de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (CEISDTAD) iniciou as suas atividades. A criação do CEISDTAD, desafio lançado pelo General Loureiro dos Santos, decorreu da intenção de desenvolver a temática da segurança e defesa na região norte interior, nos vetores do ensino, investigação e tratamento de acervos, centrando a sua atividade na temática da guerra irregular em ambiente tecnologicamente avançado.

After the signature of a cooperation agreement involving the Portuguese Army, UTAD and the Municipality of Sabrosa, the Centre for Research in Security and Defence of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (CEISDTAD) began its activities. The creation of CEISDTAD, challenge posed by General Loureiro dos Santos, was due to the intention to develop the theme of security and defence in the northern hinterland, in the vectors of education, research and treatment of collections, focusing its activity on the subject of irregular warfare in a technologically advanced environment.

Entrepreneurs Development Program at Sabor

A UTAD realizou a 4ª edição do programa EDP Empreendedor Sustentável Sabor 2014. Esta visou a capacitação dos empreendedores locais e a assessoria à criação de negócios, formação e apoio à elaboração do Plano de Negócios; e o acompanhamento dos negócios resultantes deste projeto. Durante o programa foi promovido um contato próximo com investigadores da UTAD, nas áreas dos projetos de cada empreendedor e sessões de esclarecimento sobre os principais temas de interesse.

UTAD held the 4th edition of the EDP Sustainable Entrepreneurs program Sabor 2014. This program aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs and providing advice for business creation, training and support for the development of the Business Plan; and monitoring of businesses resulting from this project. During the program a close contact was promoted with researchers from UTAD in the areas of every entrepreneur project, and sessions for clarification on the main topics of interest.

Oferecidas pelo antigo aluno da UTAD, Ismael Ventura da Silva, uma destas três “filhas de Auschwitz” foi plantada à entrada do campus numa cerimónia apadrinhada pela Quercus e pela Associação Portuguesa de Paralisia Cerebral de Vila Real. Várias pessoas assistiram e ajudaram a plantar este exemplar, conferindo ao evento um simbolismo de memória e de esperança.

The Botanical Garden of UTAD received three trees proceeding from the oak planted at the entrance of the number one concentration camp of Auschwitz. Offered by a former student of UTAD, Ismael Ventura da Silva, one of the three “daughters of Auschwitz” was planted at the entrance of the campus in a ceremony sponsored by Quercus and the Associação Portuguesa de Paralisia Cerebral de Vila Real. Several people attended and helped plant this specimen, giving the moment a symbolism of memory and hope.

O Sistema de Realidade Mista Adaptativa para Sítios Arqueológicos – Mixar - pretende desenvolver um sistema de Realidade Mista (RM) que permita “visualizar no local, reconstruções virtuais de sítios arqueológicos, na sua estrutura original”. Luís Magalhães, docente e investigador da ECT/UTAD e responsável pelo projeto, esclarece que “durante a experiência de RM será possível visualizar as ruínas dos edifícios, incluindo os seus interiores, complementados de forma historicamente correta com modelos virtuais, de modo a tornar a experiência e as sensações mais reais, permitindo ao público melhor percepção e compreensão dos mesmos”.

The Mixed Reality Adaptive System for Archaeological Sites Mixar - aims to develop a Mixed Reality system (MRI) that allows viewing virtual reconstructions of archaeological sites in its original structure, in loco. Luís Magalhães, professor and researcher of ECT/UTAD and responsible for the project, states that “during the MR experience, it will be possible to view the ruins of buildings, including their interiors, complemented in a historically correct manner with virtual models, in order to make the experience and sensations more real, allowing the public to have a better perception and understanding of them.”

O ciclo continuou com as intervenções da escritora Lídia Jorge e do cientista Alexandre Quintanilha.

The Task Force for Culture held a series of conferences celebrating the 40th aniversary of April 25th, which had as first guest speakers the historians Fernando Rosas, with the conference “To be and not to be. Notes on the Portuguese Revolution of 1974-75 on its 40th Birthday” and Joaquim Ribeiro Aires, with the conference “Vila Real: Opposition to the Estado Novo”. The cycle continued with the interventions of the writer Lídia Jorge and the scientist Alexandre Quintanilha.

Em debate estiveram os temas “Importância socioeconómica da AF no Norte de Portugal: Passado, Presente e Futuro”, “Multifuncionalidade da AF” e “AF e sustentabilidade do meio rural”.

Integrated in the “UTAD40” program, this seminar intended to mark the International Year of Family Farming (AF) and included a cycle of regional events, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Sea. Under discussion were the topics “Socioeconomic importance of AF in northern Portugal: Past, Present and Future”, “AF multifunctionality”, and “AF and sustainability of rural areas.”

Mais de 700 alunos do 3º Ciclo de Escolas da Região participaram na 11ª edição do concurso Inter-Escolas matUTAD. Além da participação no concurso, os alunos visitaram o Museu de Geologia da UTAD e participaram em torneios desportivos. O dia terminou com o apuramento dos vencedores do concurso e a entrega de prémios às equipas e às escolas melhor classificadas e também às equipas vencedoras nas modalidades desportivas. O matUTAD é um jogo de computador, desenvolvido pelo Departamento de Matemática da UTAD.

More than 700 students of several regional the 3rd Cycle Schools participated in the 11th edition of the Inter-Schools matUTAD contest. In addition to participating in the contest, the students visited the Geology Museum and participated in sports tournaments. The day ended with the establishment of the contest winners and the awards to the teams and the schools best classified and also to the winning teams in sports. The matUTAD is a computer game developed by the Department of Mathematics of UTAD.

Festival Internacional de Teatro e Artes Performativas da Lusofonia

International Lusophone Performing Arts

Um festival que ofereceu mais de 25 espetáculos e performances realizados na UTAD e em vários locais da cidade de Vila Real. Ao todo, foram 12 dias de programação artística e cultural, ininterrupta, com entrada livre ao público. Este foi o “maior festival interuniversitário jamais realizado nestes moldes no espaço lusófono”, que contou com artistas e performers de Angola, Brasil, Cabo Verde e Portugal. Uma organização da UTAD, Câmara Municipal de Vila Real, da direção do FITAP Lusofonia.

A festival that offered more than 25 shows and performances held at UTAD and at various locations in the city of Vila Real. In all, 12 days of artistic and cultural, uninterrupted programming, with free entry to the public. This was the “biggest interuniversity festival ever held in this mould in the Portuguese-speaking world” which featured artists and performers of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde and Portugal. An organization of UTAD, the Municipality of Vila Real, and the direction of FITAP Lusophony.

O Talentódromo pretende ser uma estrutura de apoio ao desenvolvimento dos talentos desportivos da Região de Vila Real, no âmbito da avaliação e controlo regular do rendimento dos desportistas e na formação contínua de treinadores, dirigentes e outros agentes envolvidos no processo. As entidades promotoras do projeto são a Câmara Municipal de Vila Real, o Centro de Investigação em Desporto, Saúde e Desenvolvimento Humano (CIDESD) e a UTAD.

The Talentdrome is intended to be a support structure for the development of sports talents of the Vila Real Region, in the scope of the evaluation and regular monitoring of the performance of athletes and continuing preparation of trainers, managers and others involved in the process. The entities promoting the project are the City of Vila Real, the Centre for Research in Sport, Health and Human Development (CIDESD) and UTAD.

Rebeca Fernández, docente da ECHS/UTAD, localizou o dicionário mais antigo da língua ilocana, uma das oito línguas principais das Filipinas. O dicionário estava há 200 anos na Real Biblioteca de Madrid mas a comunidade científica internacional julgava-o perdido. Ao aceder aos catálogos online da Real Biblioteca de Madrid, a investigadora encontrou menção ao dicionário e revelou, cerca de um ano mais tarde, a “descoberta” à comunidade científica durante o congresso Internacional de Linguística Missionária em Lima, Perú.

Rebeca Fernández, teacher at ECHS/UTAD, located the oldest dictionary of Ilocana language, one of the eight major languages of the Philippines. The dictionary had been in the Royal Madrid Library for 200 years, but the international scientific community thought it to be lost. While accessing online catalogues of the Royal Madrid Library, the researcher found reference to the dictionary and revealed, about a year later, the “discovery” to the scientific community during the International Congress of Missionary Linguistics in Lima, Peru.

Por “necessidade de mercado” Amadeu Borges, docente e investigador da ECT/UTAD, projetou e patenteou esta invenção com o objetivo de “não deixar morrer os Rebuçados da Régua”. O equipamento industrial permitirá a produção em larga escala, evitando o doloroso processo manual de corte e forma dos rebuçados. A mecanização do processo dá-se apenas ao nível do corte e forma, mantendo-se a maneira tradicional de confeção da massa. Assim, o produto final mantém a forma e sabor, tal como é conhecido no mercado, de acordo com a tradição.

Out of a “market necessity” Amadeu Borges, teacher and researcher of ECT/UTAD, designed and patented this invention in order to “not let the Régua Candy die”. The industrial equipment allows production on a large scale, avoiding the painful manual cutting process and shaping of lozenges. The mechanization of the process takes place only at the level of the cut and shape, while maintaining the traditional way for the confection of the dough. Thus, the final product retains the shape and taste, as is known in the market, keeping the tradition.

A UTAD e a empresa Frescura Sublime estão a desenvolver um projeto inovador de utilização de grão verde (semente imatura) de feijão. Tradicionalmente consumido como vagem ou como grão seco, pretende-se agora utilizar o grão “verde” imaturo do feijão como alimento e fonte de proteína. Carlos Ribeiro, docente e investigador da ECAV/UTAD e coordenador do estudo, salienta que “a forte necessidade da população mundial em fontes de proteína, a diversificação da sua oferta e a opção por dietas alimentares mais saudáveis, associada a menores consumos energéticos e consequências ambientais, dá a este projeto uma valor acrescido para a população mundial”.

UTAD and the company Frescura Sublime are developing an innovative project using green beans (immature seed). Traditionally consumed as pod or as dry grain, it is intended that the “green” immature beans be used as food and protein source. Carlos Ribeiro, teacher and researcher at ECAV/UTAD and coordinator of the study, points out that “the strong need of the world population in terms of protein sources, diversification of its offer and the option for healthier diets, associated with lower energy consumption and environmental consequences, makes this project an added advantage for the world population”.

Esta é uma das conclusões a que chegou o autor da dissertação de mestrado em gestão, Paulo Gonçalves. Neste estudo foram inquiridos 1007 estudantes, que representam 20% da população matriculada em 1º ciclo na UTAD. Dos estudantes inquiridos, 78% são originários do exterior do concelho de Vila Real, representando os originários do concelho 22%. Por mês, estes estudantes contribuem com cerca de 1 milhão e 700 mil euros na economia da cidade: a “UTAD é assim responsável por atrair uma população extra significativa” com “impacto gigantesco na economia local”.

This is one of the conclusions reached by the author of the masters’ dissertation in management, Paulo Gonçalves. This study surveyed 1007 students, representing 20% of the population enrolled in 1st cycle in UTAD. 78% of students surveyed originate from outside the Vila Real municipality, the ones originating from the county representing 22%. Per month, these students contribute about one million and 700 thousand euros to the city economy. “UTAD is thus responsible for attracting a significant extra population” with “huge impact on the local economy.”

Organizado por um grupo de antigos alunos da UTAD com ampla representação na sociedade, preocupados com a situação atual da floresta, realizou-se no Porto o Fórum “A Floresta e sua Preservação: Uma Prioridade Nacional”. Neste Fórum, que contou com a presença do Secretário de Estado das Florestas e do Desenvolvimento Rural, foi assinado um protocolo entre a UTAD e várias entidades cuja missão se desenvolve, em maior ou menor grau, nos espaços florestais e na área do ambiente.

Organized by a group of former students of UTAD with broad representation in society, concerned about the current situation of the forest, the Forum “The Forest and its preservation: A National Priority” was held in Porto. At this Forum, attended by The Secretary of State for Forestry and Rural Development, a protocol was signed between UTAD and various entities whose mission is developed, to a greater or lesser extent, in forest areas and in the field of environment.

Contatado pela empresa Douromel, que queria apresentar um produto com as mesmas características de sabor e aspeto, mas com menos açúcar, “a confitagem com substitutos de açúcar surgiu como solução”. Esta é uma “inovação com especial interesse para a confeção de doçaria tradicional” que inclui a produção de uma novidade mundial: “Marron Glacé versão Light”.

A 13.ª edição da International Conference on the History of the Language Sciences, o mais importante congresso do mundo na História da Linguística, foi realizado em Portugal pela primeira vez, tendo sido organizado pelo CEL/UTAD, o único Centro de Investigação em Portugal dedicado a esta disciplina linguística.

Some of the most important Linguistics Historians of the world were in UTAD to present the latest research results and discuss the future of the discipline. Linguistic Historiography is a new discipline that studies the evolution of the sciences of language and linguistic thought. The 13th edition of the International Conference on the History of the Language Sciences, the most important World Congress in Linguistics History, was organized for the first time in Portugal, by CEL/UTAD, the only research centre in Portugal dedicated to this linguistic discipline.

Único no país, o programa tem como objetivo melhorar a saúde de quem tem diabetes e outros problemas associados, como o excesso de peso, hipertensão arterial, colesterol e doenças do coração e conta com cerca de 50 participantes. A iniciativa é gratuita e decorrerá, numa 1ª fase, até maio de 2015.

The Diabetes em Movimento® programme began in Vila Real, and is a community exercise program for people with type 2 diabetes. Unique in the country, this program aims to improve the health of people with diabetes and other associated problems such as overweight, high blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease, and has about 50 participants. The initiative is free and will take place, in a 1st stage, until May 2015.

TREE PLUS é uma plataforma informática que irá agregar uma Bolsa de Valor do material lenhoso, de acordo com os preços da oferta e da procura, publicados por proprietários e compradores. Luís Martins, docente e investigador da UTAD, é o responsável por este projeto. Os preços, por volume das árvores em pé, poderão ser consultados pelo público, numa página da internet. Esta permitirá ainda calcular o valor comercial dos povoamentos, considerando o inventário arbóreo e o preço de mercado das árvores, informação útil para o mercado interno e externo.

TREE PLUS is a software platform that will add a timber Value Exchange, in accordance with the prices of supply and demand, published by owners and buyers. Luis Martins, lecturer and researcher at UTAD, is responsible for this project. Prices per volume of standing trees may be consulted by the public on a web page. It will also calculate the market value of the forest stands, considering the tree inventory and the market price of the trees, useful information for the domestic and foreign markets.

Cresce em estuários e salinas, é conhecida por “sal verde”. A salicórnia é uma planta “comestível e saborosa, que conserva o sal e que pode ser conservada no frio por muito tempo”. Marisa Ribeirinho, aluna da UTAD e a docente Fernanda Leal estabeleceram in vitro as condições para a produção desta espécie. Com inúmeras vantagens, a planta é referenciada em estudos científicos internacionais pelas suas propriedades medicinais. Salicornia is an “edible and tasty [plant], which preserves salt and can be kept in the cold for a long time.” Marisa Ribeirinho, a student at UTAD and professor Fernanda Leal established in vitro conditions for the production of this species. With numerous advantages, the plant is referenced in international studies for its medicinal properties. The propagation of the in vitro culture medium will contribute to the proliferation and scale production of the plant in a short time and contamination-free manner.

O Fast Clone ID é um novo sistema que “identifica em poucos segundos o clone de uma planta através de métodos espectroscópicos baseados em imagem”. Pedro Melo Pinto, docente da UTAD e investigador do CITAB, é um dos cinco investigadores portugueses e espanhóis envolvidos no desenvolvimento e patenteamento deste sistema, também detido pela Universidade de La Rioja. A metodologia desenvolvida permite “a partir da simples captação de imagens, a identificação de uma variedade ou do clone de determinada planta”, de forma “ultrarrápida, não destrutiva e amiga do ambiente”.

Fast Clone ID is a new system which “identifies the clone from a plant in a few seconds through spectroscopic methods based on image”. Pedro Melo Pinto, professor of UTAD and CITAB researcher, is one of five Portuguese and Spanish researchers involved in the development and patenting of this system, also held by the University of La Rioja. The methodology allows “the identification of a variety or clone of a certain plant, from the simple image capture” in an “ultra-fast, non-destructive and environmentally friendly” manner.

Subordinado ao tema “Pensar e Agir para a Sustentabilidade e Viabilidade dos Territórios de Baixa Densidade”, foi realizado pela Animar em parceria com a UTAD e contou com mais de 150 pessoas ligadas ao mundo académico, estudantes, autarcas, dirigentes associativos, técnicos/as de organizações públicas e privadas que intervêm no domínio de desenvolvimento local, que debateram as principais dificuldades que se sentem atualmente nas localidades do interior.

Organizado pelos alunos do segundo ano do 1º Ciclo em Reabilitação Psicomotora da UTAD, decorreu o Encontro Nacional da Igualdade, com o objetivo de “sensibilizar para uma maior compreensão dos assuntos relativos à deficiência e mobilização para a defesa da dignidade, dos direitos e do bem-estar das pessoas com deficiência”. Mário Trindade, atleta paralímpico com palmarés notável, foi homenageado pelos méritos desportivos, assim como os treinadores Eduarda Coelho e Jorge Campaniço, também docentes na UTAD. O evento incluiu atividades de prática desportiva.

Organized by the students of the second year of the 1st cycle in Psychomotor Rehabilitation at UTAD, the National Meeting for Equality was held in order to “raise awareness for a greater understanding of issues relating to disability and mobilization to defend the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities”. Mario Trindade, Paralympic athlete with remarkable history, and Coaches Eduarda Coelho and Jorge Campaniço, also professor at UTAD, were honoured by their sports merits. A Ministra da Agricultura afirmou, que Portugal tem como objetivo a exportação de mais de dois mil milhões de euros em frutas, legumes e flores, até 2020. “Estamos a exportar mais de mil milhões neste setor e em 2020 ambicionamos exportar dois mil milhões de euros. É uma meta extraordinariamente interessante e ambiciosa”, apontou Assunção Cristas. A governante, que participou no 3º Simpósio Nacional de Fruticultura, disse ter ficado “sem fala e sem respiração” com o programa do evento, que mostra o desenvolvimento da instituição e do setor. O evento juntou mais de 200 produtores, técnicos e investigadores.

Romeu Videira, investigador da UTAD, coordenou um estudo que desvenda “novos mecanismos bioquímicos no cérebro subjacentes à doença de Alzheimer”. Esta investigação mostrou também que a doença de Alzheimer não é específica do cérebro já que “alterações metabólicas são também detetadas em tecido muscular esquelético”. Os estudos agora desenvolvidos permitem, não apenas apresentar “novas estratégias de diagnóstico”, mas também “novas formas terapêuticas, entre as quais, as que recorrem aos nanomateriais”. O projeto foi premiado pela Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian no concurso “Estimulo à Investigação 2014”, que distingue propostas de investigação de elevado potencial criativo.

UTAD study reveals losses in the production of the Chestnut Tree

Luis Martins, docente e investigador da UTAD, realizou o estudo “Monitorização da condição fitossanitária do castanheiro por fotografia aérea obtida com aeronave não tripulada”, em colaboração João Paulo Castro, do Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, Ricardo Bento e Joaquim Sousa, também da UTAD. O estudo permitiu perceber que no “período de 2006 a 2014, as perdas de produção atingiram quase 50% dos povoamentos, devido à mortalidade e ao declínio provocado pelas doenças”. Desenvolvido nos concelhos de Valpaços e Vinhais, este estudo foi premiado como o melhor em Portugal na área da fitossanidade florestal.

The study allowed us to observe that in the “period from 2006 to 2014, production losses amounted to nearly 50% of the tree stands due to mortality and decline caused by diseases.” Developed in the municipalities of Valpaços and Vinhais, this study was awarded as the best in Portugal in the area of forest plant health.
