UTAH

SWIMMING & DIVING

Utah Swimming & Diving The University of Utah men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams compete at one of the premiere venues in the Mountain West Conference. The fan-friendly Ute Natatorium is situated in the heart of Utah’s competition sites. It was built in 1968 and has been the home of numerous championship events, including the 1970 NCAA Championship Meet. Ute Natatorium offers everything a collegiate swimmer or diver needs to reach the pinnacle of their performance. It contains three pools, a six-lane, 25-yard training pool, an eight-lane, 25yard competition pool and the newly refurbished 20x15 diving well, which reaches a depth of 16 feet and offers two 1-meter boards and two 3-meter boards. While the 39-year-old facility has been a fixture on campus, it received a new look in 2005. The renovations included an $800,000 improvement to the diving well. The facelift not only extended the depth of the diving well but added a new gutter system that brings the water level up to the deck. There are concrete platforms for both the 1- and 3-meter boards with a uniquely designed 3-meter that adds to the hometeam atmosphere, a block U-shaped platform with boards extending from the top of both sides. In addition to the pools, the team benefits from additions and renovations to its locker rooms. The locker rooms received a $100,000 improvement. The men’s locker room was separated in order to create locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams. It also features clubhouse-sized lockers and an expanded team meeting lounge. 2010-11 Utah Swimming & Diving Media Guide

Greg Winslow Fourth Season

Head Coach Greg Winslow

Coaches Outlook The Utes History U. of U.

Starting his fourth season as the head coach of the University of Utah swimming and diving team, head coach Greg Winslow is continuing to develop the Ute squad. Five school records and two Mountain West Conference diving records were broken on the women’s side in 2009-10, while the men set seven school records and two MWC diving records. For the 2009-10 season, the Utah men’s swimming and diving team finished with a 3-5 overall record and a 1-4 record in MWC competition. The Utes finished sixth at the MWC Championships, scoring 401 points along with eight athletes being named to the All-MWC team. They ended the season by beating rival BYU, which ended a five-year losing streak against the Cougars. As for the Ute women, they finished their campaign with a 7-7 overall record and a 4-4 record in the MWC competition. At the MWC Championships, the women finished fifth with 377 points and six athletes were selected to the All-MWC team.

During his time with the Sun Devils, Winslow qualified four athletes for the US National Junior team. That is the most swimmers one coach has ever qualified at the USA swimming level in history. Winslow served as the CEO and head coach at Air Force Academy Falfins swim club from 1999-2003. While with the Falfins, Winslow increased the number of swimmers in the program from 53 to 140, added five assistant coaches and started programs at two new facilities. He developed seven national qualifiers and his athletes set 28 Colorado state records. Winslow was named the 2001 Colorado Coach of the Year. He served as the USA Swimming Colorado coaches representative from 2002-03 and worked as an assistant coach at Air Force from 2001-03. Winslow began his coaching career with the Valley Swim Team in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1996. He led Valley to its first city championship in 1997 and the seasonal state championship in 1998. Valley won the State Spirit award both years and Winslow was named the 1997 Colorado Seasonal Coach of the Year. His first collegiate coaching job was as an assistant at Saint Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., from 1998-99, where he helped guide the Huskies to their highest NCAA Division II finish in school history.

The Utah women’s team ended the 2008-09 season 112-1 and finished fourth at the 2009 MWC Championships after scoring 469 points. The Ute men’s team improved throughout the season, defeating Air Force and narrowly falling to BYU and Wyoming, before finishing sixth at the 2009 MWC Championships, totaling 326 points. Winslow coached the third women’s All-American in Utah history and the Utes broke 15 school records and five MWC records on the women’s side and four men’s school records

Winslow swam for the University of North Dakota for four years, where he earned All-America status in 1996. He played a key role in leading the men’s team to four conference titles, serving as team captain in his final two years.

In 2007-08, his first season at Utah, Winslow led the Utah women’s squad to third place at the 2008 MWC Championships and it was one of the first signs that this young team will be a contender for years to come. The Ute women ended their regular season with a 6-5 overall record and were 5-3 in conference. A young Utes’ men’s team showed flashes of its potential with a sixth-place finish at the 2008 MWC Championships (353.5 points).

Coaches Outlook The Utes History U. of U.

After ending a successful 2009-10 season in fifth place at the Mountain West Conference Championships, the Utah women’s swimming and diving team is full of potential and looking forward to a strong final season as part of the MWC.

Women’s Season Outlook

Coaches Outlook The Utes History U. of U.

At the end of last season, Utah had six women named to the AllMWC team: Hannah Caron, Natalie Edge, Maiya Otsuka, Sarah Boylen, Ellis Walters, and Kwan Ling Yu. All six of these studentathletes will return for Utah during the 2010-11 season. Caron, Edge, and Otsuka are all listed in the schools record books as well. The Utes performed well at many of the meets last season, including wins over Denver, North Texas, Boise, New Mexico, and MWC rival, UNLV. At the Toshiba Classic last November, Edge and Evans led the team with excellent finishes in the 50 free. The team ultimately ended the meet in ninth place. The Utes ultimately broke five school records. A few of Utah’s swimmers qualified for the Olympic Trials, including Edge, Caron, and Evans for their performances at the MWC Championships and Mt. Hood Sectionals. Edge and Evans qualified in the 50 free and Caron qualified for the 100 fly. Aspirations for these three are particularly high this season along with Otsuka, who set new school records in the 200 breast last year. There were only a couple of seniors who exhausted their eligibility last year, including record-setting swimmers Beth Gunderson and Annie Vanleeuwen, who stepped into the Graduate Assistant coach position this season. A batch of accomplished freshmen will be joining the Ute squad this year and are eager to show their prowess alongside Utah’s returners. Many of the freshmen have qualified nationally and hold state records in their respective events.

Butterfly After topping the school records and qualifying for Olympic Trials for her time in the 100 fly, Caron has high aspirations this season. Joining Caron and Boylen in the butterfly events will be Jana Willsey and Woodliff. Breaststroke Otsuka, who broke the school record in the 200 breast in 2008, will continue to lead the Utes through the breaststoke events this season. Buck and freshman Nicole Ligeza will also participate in the breaststroke for the Utes. Ligeza is a four-time Illinois high school state qualifier in 100 breast as well as 100 fly and the 200 IM. Ligeza was a state finalist in 100 breast and 200 IM, as well as a finalist at the NCSA Junior Nationals.

Backstroke Sarah Cox and Boylen are continuing to be an asset for the Utes in the backstroke events this year. Also performing in the back events is Woodliff and Swartz. Aside from her records in the free event. Woodliff placed second in both 50 and 100 back at the California Community College State Championship.

IM Considered one of the best IM swimmers in the MWC, Caron holds the second-best IM time in conference history as well as the current Utah 200 IM record and will continue to swim for Utah in the IM events this season. Otsuka will also be a strong competitor. This year, Buck, Willsey, and Ligeza will be joining Caron and Otsuka in the IM events.

“This is the best freshmen group that we’ve had in a long time, especially for the women‘s team,” Ute head coach Greg Winslow stated. “They really complement what our needs are and will be a big part of the program.”

The addition of new diving coach Richard Marschner will bring a new dynamic to the Utah diving team.

With the combination of the freshmen and the returners to the Ute team, Winslow anticipates a fun year watching the team “grow and plug it out together.”

With both Yu and Walters earning All-MWC honors and Yu placing 14th at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships last season, the Ute diving team is looking promising for the Ute’s 2010-11 campaign.

Freestyle

Diving

Schedule

Edge and Evans, who have set school records and qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials in free events, are expected to lead the Utes in the freestyle events this year, along with Caron and sophomore Kayla Buck. Chardonnay Biter-Mundt and Danielle Caldwell will also be returning to freestyle swimming this year. Many of the newcomers will be swimming freestyle and include Rebecca Bott, Valerie McMullan, Traycie Swartz, Elizabeth Thompson, Alyssa Woodliff, and Samantha Zuch. Bott was named a two-year USA Scholastic American, qualified for nationals, and was a Virginia state champion in the 200 medley relay. Also a Virginia record-holder, McMullan was a state champion in 200 free and was also a member of a nationallyranked relay. Swartz qualified for Senior Nationals and the Olympic trials, while she also holds the Arizona state record in the 100 free. Owner of every Layton High (Utah) swim record, Thompson was the region champion in the 50 and 100 free, as well as the district champion in 200 free. When Woodliff swam at Sierra College, she finished in the top 10 at state competitions. At the University of Hawaii, Woodliff was the first woman finisher in the Hawaii Rough Open Water Swim. As for Zuch, she is a 14-time NISCA high school All-American, set nine Napoleon high (Napoleon, Ohio) school records, and is a five-time Ohio State Champion in the 200 and 500 free.

The Utah women’s swimming and diving team starts its season in Albuquerque, N.M., to face off against New Mexico on Sept. 18. Next will be the BYU Freshmen/Sophomore meet on Oct. 7. At the end of October, the Utes will be home for a meet against Denver. On Nov. 11, the squad will travel to South Bend, Ind., to face off against Notre Dame. From Nov. 18-20, the Utah swimmers will compete against San Diego State and also at the Toshiba Classic, while the divers will head to the Wildcat Diving Invitational. Home meets against Seattle and Arkansas at the beginning of December will close out the semester. When 2011 begins, Utah will travel to Arizona State (Jan. 5), TCU (Jan. 15), and UNLV (Jan. 29), and will close out their home season with two MWC meets against Wyoming (Jan. 21) and Air Force (Jan. 22). Utah will take on in-state rival BYU on Feb. 4 in Salt Lake City. The MWC Championships will take place in Oklahoma City from Feb. 23 – 26. The NCAA Zone E Diving Championships are for March 10 – 12 and the NCAA Women’s Championships will be held in Minneapolis, March 17 – 19.

With the accomplished group of freshmen coming to the team, Winslow anticipates “a very strong women’s team especially in sprint and freestyle events.”

Maiya Otsuka holds the Utah record in the 200 breaststroke.

2010-11 Utah Swimming & Diving Media Guide

For the 2010-11 season, Utah’s men swimming and diving team is hoping for a successful final season in the Mountain West Conference. Utah head coach Greg Winslow said, “Our goal is to do well in our last year in the MWC, take it one meet at a time and not worry about the rest of the conference so we can focus on how well our team can do.” After finishing sixth in the Mountain West Conference Championships at the end of the 2009-10 season, eight men were listed to the all-MWC team. The following six swimmers will still be swimming for the Utes this season: Karson Applin, Bjorn Gunnarsson, Bryan Michaels, Eric Murray, Garrett Peterson, Major Robinson, and Eric Bonnicelli.

At the Toshiba Classic meet in December 2009, the Utes finished in fifth place among 14 teams in the west, including the top competitors like Stanford, Hawaii, and California. The men’s team ended their season with high spirits when they defeated rival BYU for the first time in five years. The Utah men’s team said farewell to four seniors last year, including John Baque and David Pursley, both of whom were also named to the all-MWC team for their performances in the 200 breast and 400 IM, respectively. Despite the departure of some talented swimmers, Winslow is impressed with the leadership being shown by the team captains and the upperclassman on the squad this year. With exciting new freshmen coming in and the return of Garret Beaman from his LDS mission, Winslow is excited to see how the team will develop together. “We are coming off the best summer we have ever had as a team. It’s really exciting,” exclaimed Winslow, who is entering his fourth season as the Utah head swim coach. “It is definitely the most talented team I have coached since I have been at Utah.” Freestyle Prospects for distance and sprints in freestyle events look bright for Utah this year. Returning this year is Eric Bonicelli, Luke Donohue, Ryan Hansen, Andy Lamb, Rick Mason, Eric Murray, Bryan Michaels, Major Robinson, and Garret Beaman. In the distance swims, Michaels currently has a personal record of 9:13.86 in the 1000 free, topping the current Utah school record. Bonnicelli and Gunnarsson will also contribute to Utah’s freestyle events. Derek Lair and Brent Murray are the new freshman free swimmers. Lair comes to the team after earning two high school state championships while setting state and school records. He qualified nationally in the 100 free at the USA Swimming Junior Nationals.

Garrett Peterson posted team-best times in the 100 and 200 breast last season, so expect his accomplishments in these events to continue. Also swimming breaststroke is Applin, Andy Choi, Tim Leonhart, and freshman Corey Williams. Williams comes to Utah as a record-holder for his high school swim team, and as a finalist in the 100 breast at the state meet during his senior year.

Coaches Outlook The Utes History U. of U.

Backstroke After placing in the top three in the 200 back at the MWC Championships and earning all-MWC team honors for the past two years, Major Robinson will continue to be a strong competitor in the backstroke events. Beaman, who posted team-best times last season in the 100 back and the 200 IM, will return to backstroke events this year.

Men’s Season Outlook

Applin was named to the team for placing fourth in 100 fly. With sixthplace finishes in the 100 and 500 free, Gunnarsson and Michaels were honored as well. Peterson was honored for placing sixth in the 200 breast while Robinson was recognized for his third-place finish in the 200 back. Murray was also recognized for the men’s 200 free relay. Bonnicelli placed fourth-place in the 200 fly which secured his spot on the all-MWC team.

Breaststroke

Joining Robinson and Beaman these events will be Fiascone, and Lamb. IM Lair and Peterson will be the swimming the IM events this year for Utah. Lair set state and school records in the 200 IM, also qualifying at the USA Swimming Junior Nationals in that same event. Diving On the diving boards this year, Michael Glasson and Brandon Stoppelmoor return along with sophomore Nelson Foo and freshmen Michael Dorman, and Caleb Herrick. With the help of new diving coach, Richard Marschner, Utah’s diving team has high aspirations of having a successful season. Schedule The Utah men’s swimming and diving team’s schedule kicks off October 7 at BYU for the Freshman/Sophomore meet. Following that, Utah will compete at Mesa State in Colorado from the 8-9, and will return to Salt Lake at the end of October for a meet against Denver. On November 11, the squad will travel to Indiana to face off against Notre Dame. Also in November is the Toshiba Class meet, and the Wildcat Diving Invitational (Nov 18-20). December will see a home meet against Seattle on Dec 3. When 2011 begins, Utah’s team will travel to Arizona State (Jan 5), TCU (Jan 15), and UNLV (Jan 29), with two home meets against Wyoming (Jan 21) and the Air Force (Jan 22). The Utes close out their regular season Feb. 4 by hosting BYU. The Mountain West Conference Championships will take place in Oklahoma City from Feb 23 – 26. The NCAA Zone E Diving Championships are set to take place March 10 – 12. And from March 24 – 26, the NCAA Men’s championships will occur in Minneapolis.

As for Murray, he won the 50 free at the 2010 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Junior National Championships and went on to place third internationally at the 2010 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, posting the fastest time ever by an American in the 50 free. “Murray was the fastest sprinter in the country coming out of high school so we are excited to have him be a part of our program,” Winslow stated. Butterfly Fly events should continue to be strong for the Utes in the 2010-11, with Karson Applin, Austin Fiascone, Eric Murray, Lamb, Donohue, and Bonicelli all swimming the events. Both Applin and Bonicelli were named to the all-MWC for their strong fly performances at the MWC Championships.

Major Robinson has been a member of the All-MWC team in the 200 backstroke in each of the last two seasons.

Ranked among the top 100 universities in the world, the University of Utah is renowned for its research expertise, academic performance and athletic prowess. The U. is the only institution in the Mountain West Conference—and in the state of Utah—to earn a top-tier ranking from the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and has done so for five straight years.

Utah ranks among the top 35 public research universities in the nation, with particular distinction in medicine, genetics and engineering.

Founded in 1850, the University of Utah now encompasses 1,500 acres in the foothills of the towering Wasatch Mountain range. The campus is located just minutes from downtown Salt Lake City and world-class ski resorts, and includes an eclectic mix of teaching and research facilities in a park-like setting of trees, fountains, flowering malls and pedestrian walkways. Home to a student population of over 29,000, the U offers some 100 undergraduate and 90 graduate majors. Many of the U.’s programs are nationally ranked, including law, pharmacy, architecture, business, engineering and dance. Utah ranks among the top public research universities in the nation, with particular distinction in medicine, genetics and engineering. In 2008-2009, the University received a record-setting $376.7 million in external funding for research. University of Utah geneticist Mario R. Capecchi, one of many acclaimed faculty members, received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine for his work on gene targeting.

Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, home to the University of Utah and the state’s capital city, offers an unrivaled blend of metropolitan life and recreational opportunities. With 179,894 residents, Salt Lake City is the largest city in the state and its metro population of 1,333,914 ranks in the top 40 in the United States. Yet Salt Lake City maintains the charm of a small western city. Employment opportunities, culture, quality of life and recreation are some of the reasons why Salt Lake City is consistently named one of the nation’s best cities. In the May 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, Salt Lake City was No. 5 on its list of the “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.” Forbes Magazine selected Salt Lake City as “The Best City for Jobs” in both 2007 and 2008. Nestled between the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake, the city is located in one of the most picturesque places on earth. The lowest point within city boundaries is 4,210 feet near the Great Salt Lake, and the highest is Grandview Peak at 9,410 feet. The Great Salt Lake (48 miles wide and 90 miles long) is the world’s second largest saltwater lake and the largest lake in the western United States. The city is the cultural, financial, educational, technological, commercial, and communications hub of the Intermountain West. Utah was named the most technologically advanced state in the 2008 Digital States Survey. Salt Lake is also home to world-renowned medical and technology industries.

Cultural and ethnic activities flourish in Salt Lake City and its vibrant downtown features dining, shopping, music and ethnic festivals, art galleries, professional symphony, opera, theater and dance. The annual Sundance Film Festival, which is the largest independent film festival in the U.S., attracts movie stars, celebrities, and thousands of film buffs to the area every year. According to P3/Production Update Magazine, Utah is one of the “10 Best States in the Nation for Film.” Professional sports franchises in Salt Lake City include the Utah Jazz (NBA), Real Salt Lake (Major League Soccer), the Salt Lake Bees (AAA baseball) and the Utah Grizzlies (East Coast Hockey League).

The Utah swimming & diving team has a variety of resources available to it to care for both the athletes’ physical and mental well-being.

The current elite training facility has 16 full racks with Olympic platforms, a large dumbbell training area complete with 12 0-90 degree incline walk-up benches, and a large cardiovascular area complete with treadmills, cross trainers, stair steppers and spin bikes.

To care for the athlete’s injuries, the Utah athletics program maintains a partnership with a veteran sports medicine team supervised by Dr. Bob Burks, director of the University of Utah Sports Medicine Center at Red Butte Clinic. The sports medicine staff is headed by director Trevor Jameson and associate trainer Deb Willardson. The swimming and diving team works with Jameson and graduate assistant Tim Cooley on a daily basis. Other resources available to Utah swimmers and divers include a sports psychologist and nutritionist.
