With speed and firepower up front, skill through the middle and depth and experience on defense, the 2010 Utah Women’s Soccer team is setting its sights on the top of the Moutnain West Conference standings once again. After showing flashes of top-25 talent and performance in 2009, the Utes now look to experienced veterans and skillful newcomers to cement themselves among the elite in 2010. Goals scored, minutes played and shots taken are measurable items that can be tracked and counted. Utah head coach Rich Manning feels that it’s the immeasurable qualities of his squad that will carry the Utes to success in 2010, while taking care of those quantifiable stats along the way. “We have a large group of veterans on this roster who have the experience and inclination to be leaders,” said Manning. “The group as a whole has a fantastic spirit that is as good as any we have ever seen here. We feel like we have a cause this year, a goal that is bigger than us, and that spirit to win is driving us on a daily basis. We have already faced a number of challenges in the preseason and that spirit has shined through and carried us through the weight of every curveball that has been thrown our way. “I have a lot of confidence that this group will do very well this year,” continued Manning. “Our goal every year is to be better at the end than we were at the beginning. I think we learned a lot of hard lessons last year when we lost or tied several games that we had control of. Whether that was due to inexperience or a lack of mental toughness, I expect us to turn that around this year and, when we have control of a game, to get a result.” Leading the way will be four co-captains: senior forward Lauren Hair and juniors Erin Dalley, Lauren Dudley and Lauren Porter. The Tip of the Spear… Utah returns most of its scoring threats from last year, including Dalley, a first-team All-MWC selection last season, who led the team with nine goals as a redshirt sophomore. Joining her up top is Hair, a second-team all-conference choice, three-year starter and last year’s team leader in assists. Together, they combine to bring serious speed, tenacity and goal-scoring ability to the Utah front line. “With the kind of impact Lauren has had in her first three years, I expect her to have a terrific senior season,” said Manning. “During the season last year, I thought Erin was as good as any forward in our conference. I have a lot of confidence in those two.” Dalley and Hair will be joined by a host of hungry young forwards, including junior Anne Shallenberger, sophomore Monica Okapal and freshmen Lexi Krantz. According to teammates, Shallenberger possesses one of the hardest shots in the league, while Okapal has impressed the coaching staff in preseason training. Krantz was a highly decorated offensive player in high school and now looks to translate her nose for the net to the collegiate Junior forward Erin Dalley led the Utes with nine goals last year. The first-team All-MWC selection level. “I think we will have a and will look to crack double digits in 2010.

lot of pace, continuity and experience up there,” added Manning. “Monica has stepped up and improved and is healthy now. Anne continues to get better and I am impressed with Lexi as a potential finisher. This group of forwards is really exciting.” A Midfield Transition… The Utah midfield will continue to play a key role in Manning’s system as youthful but experienced players look to step up and Senior forward Lauren Hair hopes to close out her career with a third consecutive All-MWC fill the shoes left by Utah’s effort. She also needs just one assist to crack the all-time assists leader top five all-time at Utah with 15. Kelly Isleib. The veteran of the pack is junior Chelsea Forbes, whose versatility also makes her a candidate to play on the front line. Scoring a pair of goals in each of her first two seasons, Forbes hopes to step up and have a breakout year in a more focused offensive role. Joining Forbes are redshirt sophomore Kellie Woodfield, who returns to the team after suffering a season-ending injury after six games last year. Also battling her way back to the squad is redshirt sophomore Katie Martinez, who showed great toughness and promise as a true freshman before suffering a string of difficult injuries that held her out of last season completely. Stephanie Lemeza and Allie Wisner both saw major playing time as true freshmen. Now, armed with a year of collegiate experience behind them, they hope to influence the Utah squad even further as toughminded, gritty and skillful midfielders. Also joining them are freshmen Stacy Fujikuni, who comes out of one of the top clubs in Southern California, and Jen Ericson, a Northern California club standout, who will both look to establish themselves right out of the gate. “The midfield is an area where we will improve as the season goes along. I really like some of our options but we will also have some players transitioning and learning new positions and new roles. Our midfield will start with Chelsea. I think her ball skills, vision and feel are as good as anyone’s and she will drive the bus for us. Kellie is as hard a worker as anyone, and we will probably try Morgan (Skeen) there as well. Katie is a very impactful player and we will be happy to get her back on the field. We will certainly try to work in our freshman there as well.” The Defense Of all the positions on the field, Utah has the most depth and experience on the back line. Senior Morgan Skeen has been a staple at right back for three years. A tough, physical defender, she has worked hard to also become an offensive threat and will likely play a significant role in the Utah midfield as well. The Utes also return three-year starter Nicole Cardon, who brings speed and experience to the left side of the defense. For the third straight year, the Ute back line will be anchored by its twin towers at center back, Dudley and Porter, who stand at 5-foot-10 and 5-foot-9, respectively. Both are able to dominate the air defensively and clear away danger from crosses and set pieces, while providing a

Add in senior Christine Quinn at 5-foot-11 and sophomore Zoe Van Gorder at 5-foot-9, and the Utes likely possess one of the tallest core of center backs in the western region, if not the nation. Sophomore Ashley Mosley will challenge for Junior center back Lauren Porter returns to a starting spot as well, anchor the defense for the third straight year. The All-MWC defender has started every game building on the experience she gained playing on both of her career. the left and right sides last year. With blazing speed, Mosley is a handful for opposing defenders when she makes up her mind to go forward and get involved in the offense. She demonstrated her speed to the Utah home crowd last year with a nearly full-field run past multiple defenders to set up the eventual game-winner against Cal Poly last year at Ute Field. Four freshmen add to the depth of the Utah defense as Percie Allen, Aleesha Flandro, Jenny Hutton and Harley Spier wait in the wings for their chance to challenge the upperclassmen for a piece of the action. Allen, Flandro and Spier are Utah natives with impressive high school and club resumes, while Hutton was an equally wellaccomplished player in the state of Colorado. The Ute defense will be working with a new voice this year as well, as first-year assistant coach Ryan Crabbe specializes in training the back line. Between the Pipes Junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen has once again established herself as the starter for the Utes. In two years between the pipes,
Preseason Prognostication The University of Utah soccer team was selected second in the Mountain West Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, tying SDSU with 37 points. The Utes also received one first place vote. Utah is predicted to finish behind BYU, who received 48 points and six of eight first-place votes to capture the top spot. SDSU received the only other first-place vote in the poll. TCU and New Mexico were predicted to finish in fourth and fifth place with 35 and 24 points, respectively. Turpen owns a 16-10-2 record as a starter and owns seven solo shutouts and combined with another keeper to post an additional clean sheet. Under the tutelage of first-year goalkeeper coach Mariel Wilner, Turpen now looks to emerge as one of the premier shot-stoppers in the league. Battling for the backup spot are true freshmen Hallie Koeppen and Cheyanne Mulcock. Koeppen was a highlyacclaimed goalkeeper in Idaho, earning ESPN Rise honors, while Mulcock guarded the net for the Utah Avalanche club, ranked No. 5 nationally. “The spine of our team is really solid,” said Manning. “With Hannah Turpen in goal, and Lauren Dudley and Lauren Porter in front of her, we not Junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen looks to only have skillful players but we have a breakout season between the pipes. have a great group of capable, She posted five shutouts in 10 wins last year. reliable people with good decision-making ability. I have a lot of confidence in their ability to organize, deal with situations and keep the ball out of the back of the net.” A Challenging Schedule Utah’s 2010 schedule is a virtual who’s who of perennial NCAA tournament teams and conference title challengers. The Utes play in the three non-conference tournaments on the road where they will face the likes of Washington State, Georgia, Stanford and Santa Clara, all of whom appeared in the national Top-25 last year. Gonzaga and UNC Greensboro, also competing at those tournaments, are just as dangerous as well. Utah will also play two “revenge games” on the road, facing Weber State and Arizona, who each defeated the Utes the last time they met in Salt Lake City. The Utes’ home slate doesn’t get much easier, including the home-opener against Loyola Marymount followed by a meeting with Saint Mary’s two days later. Colorado College, Utah State and Oregon State round out the list of non-conference opposition who will invade Ute Field. Utah plays three of its first four MWC matches on the road, opening up at Air Force, then hosting Wyoming before hitting the road again to face New Mexico and TCU. However, the front-loaded road slate means three consecutive home matches to finish out the regular season, including games against last year’s conference champions. 2009 MWC Tournament champion San Diego State, who beat Utah in double overtime in the semifinals, is first up during the closing stretch. The Utes will then face UNLV before its season finale against in-state rival BYU in the Deseret First Duel. “We want to have experienced every possible challenge prior to conference play,” said Manning. “By the time we get to October nothing should be new for us. That’s the goal of setting up our schedule this way. We will see a lot of styles and systems and play in several different weather conditions and environments. With all that I expect we will be well prepared for the MWC. For our new players, it’s a bit of a baptism by fire. We tell them ‘Go play against the best teams and let’s see how you do.’ I like it that way.”

The Utes ended the season with a 10-10-2 record, finishing third in the MWC and reaching the conference tournament semifinals. Early on in the campaign, before injuries took a severe toll on the team, the Utes climbed to their first national ranking since 2006 after shutting out No. 19 Santa Clara, 1-0, reaching as high as No. 21 in the national polls. . amed Utah’s head coach in January of 2002, Manning has N led the Utes to a 105-48-18 (.667) overall record, averaging more than 13 wins per year. Utah is also 38-9-6 against conference foes under Manning’s direction, posting a win percentage over of .774 over the last eight years. In 2008, Manning and the Utes took on a challenging
schedule with one of his most youthful teams, featuring only two senior starters. After a slow beginning, Manning coached his team to an 11-9-2 record, winning six of their last seven regular-season games to finish second in the conference. The second seed in the MWC Tournament, Utah reached the finals after defeating TCU in the semifinals, avenging their regular-season loss in Fort Worth. In 2006, Utah tied a school record for victories, finishing 16-5-1 giving Manning his third MWC Coach of the Year Award. Additionally, Adele Letro became Utah’s first player ever to be named an All-American. The Utes were the first MWC team ever to record seven league victories, winning the 2006 conference title with a perfect 7-0-0 mark. Utah did not allow a goal in conference play, setting school and MWC records. 2006 also marked the third time in four years that the Utes hosted opening-weekend games in the NCAA Tournament. Utah finished that season ranked in the top 25 in each of the major polls. Manning kicked off his Utah tenure in historic fashion, directing the Utes to their first-ever win over a top-25 team with a 2-0 shutout of No. 3 Portland at Ute Field on Sept. 1, 2002. The following week, Utah vaulted into the national rankings for the first time. Utah finished 13-4-3 overall and 4-1-1 to place second in the MWC that year, as Manning earned MWC Coach of the Year in his inaugural season. The Utes advanced to their first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2002, defeating arch rival BYU 3-2 in overtime in the first round. Manning and the Utes set the tone as a program that would be tough to score against, ranking 29th in the NCAA in goals against average (0.29). The program continued to flourish in 2003 when Utah tied its single-season wins mark with a 16-2-2 record as Manning was recognized as the NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year. The Utes finished the season in the Top 25 rankings for the first time, coming in at No. 24 in the final NSCAA poll. Utah’s defense ranked second in the NCAA in goals against average (0.436) and fifth in shutout percentage (0.65). The Utes were unbeaten at home that year and also captured their first-ever outright league title with a 6-0 record. The Utes hosted the MWC Tournament for the first time, defeating BYU 2-0 in the championship game. Utah then hosted NCAA first and second round games at Ute Field—another program first. .In 2004, Utah went 13-6-3, won the MWC Tournament

U ta h S O C C E R 2009 Notebook è Rich Manning won his 100th career game as a head coach on Sept. 9 as the Utes defeated Princeton, 2-0. In eight seasons at the helm, Manning has accumulated 105 wins, averaging just over 13 victories per season. è Midfielder Kelly Isleib became Utah’s alltime assists leader in 2008. She extended her school record to 28 helpers with five in 2009. è Utah had four players named to All-MWC squads. Three Utes were named first-team selections (Isleib, Erin Dalley and Lauren Porter), while Lauren Hair was a second team selection. è Isleib also earned NSCAA third-team All-West Region honors for the second consecutive year. è Manning signed nine freshmen to play for the Utes in the fall, securing depth and skill all over the field. With four signees from the state of Utah, three from California, one from Idaho and one from Colorado, this diverse class brings a wealth of national success at the high school and club levels to the Utes. Putting a premium on speed, skill and play-making ability, Manning has added three defenders, three midfielders, two goalkeepers and one forward. è Utah is coming off a third-place finish in the Mountain West Conference after posting a 4-2-1 league record. The Utes also reached the MWC Tournament semifinals before falling to eventual champion SDSU in double overtime, 2-1.
Kelly Isleib led the Utes in points for the second straight year. She logged 21 points on eight goals and five assists. Isleib finished her career as the all-time assists leader at Utah with 28.

2 0 0 9 season review è Since Manning took over as Utah’s head coach in 2002, the Utes have the secondbest conference winning percentage of any MWC rival. Utah owns a .774 winning percentage in conference games since Manning took over, with a record of 38-9-6. That mark barely trails BYU (.783/38-8-7), and leads San Diego State (.538/23-19-11) and UNLV (.519/26-24-3). Including nonconference contests, Manning has won at least 10 games in every year of his career at Utah and has never had a losing season. è With a 10-10-2 record in 2009, Utah posted a record of .500 or better for the 12th consecutive season and the 13th in it’s 15 years of soccer history. è In addition to on-field success, the Utes are getting it done in the classroom as well. For the second straight year, a total of 12 Utah players, nearly half of the Utes’ roster, were named Academic All-MWC performers. Since 1996, Utah has had 10 or more academic all-conference selections nine times. Athlete Class Erin Dalley* So. Lauren Dudley* So. Lauren Hair* Jr. Stephanie Lemeza Fr. Monica Okapal Fr. Utes Make Five Consecutive NCAA Appearances In 2002, head coach Rich Manning’s first year at helm, the University of Utah soccer team made its inaugural appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In their opening game, the Utes not only captured their first-ever tournament game, but also captured the first victory over BYU in team history. Utah won an overtime thriller, 3-2, on the Cougars’ home field in Provo, Utah. The Utes advanced through the first round for the second time in 2006, on the back of a 3-2 overtime victory against Idaho State. In both second-round appearances, the Utes’ fell to Portland University. The 2002 NCAA tournament appearance began a streak of five consecutive tournament berths for the Utes as they reached postseason play every year from 2002 to 2006. Utah also hosted first and second round action at Ute Field three times, in 2003, 2005 and 2006. Utah swept the Mountain West Conference championships in 2003, winning both the MWC regular-season and tournament titles.
Utah Wins Six Conference Titles Utah captured its first conference title in 1999, the inaugural year of the Mountain West Conference. The Utes were named co-champions as they finished in a three-way tie with San Diego State and BYU. Utah’s next league title came in 2003, as the Utes swept both the MWC regular-season and tournament championships. Utah went undefeated in conference play for the first time in school history, posting a 6-0-0 record. The Utes then topped BYU by a 2-0 score in the tournament championship match, held in Salt Lake City. The successful 2003 campaign kicked off a string of four straight years in which either the regular season or conference tournament hardware would rest in the Utes’ trophy case at season’s end. In 2004, Utah won its second consecutive MWC Tournament championship, advancing past San Diego State in the finals. The match was tied 1-1 following regulation and overtime play, but the Utes eventually conquered the Aztecs in penalty kicks to claim the title. The 2005 season saw Utah finish atop the MWC standings in the regular season, posting another undefeated conference record at 6-0-1. With another flawless year in 2006, registering a 7-0-0 record, Utah joined BYU as the only two programs in the MWC’s history to post back-to-back unbeaten seasons. Utah and BYU also share the distinction of being the two most successful soccer programs in MWC history. Utah has captured either the regular-season or conference tournament championship five times, while BYU has claimed a title eight times. Both squads have also twice doubled up to sweep both titles in the same year.
Utah’s Postseason Resume • Five MWC championships (2003-‘06) - Three regular-season titles (2003, ‘05, ‘06) - Two tournament crowns (2003, ‘04) • One WAC regular-season championship (1999) • Five straight NCAA appearances (2002-‘06) • Reached the NCAA second round twice (2002, ‘06) • Hosted first and second rounds three times (2003, ‘05, ‘06)
Utah celebrated its first-ever NCAA Tournament win in 2002. It was also the team’s first-ever victory against rival BYU on the Cougars’ home field.

Employment opportunities, culture, quality of life and recreation are some of the reasons why Salt Lake City is consistently named one of the nation’s best cities. In the May 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, Salt Lake City was No. 5 on its list of the “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.” Forbes Magazine selected Salt Lake City as “The Best City for Jobs” in both 2007 and 2008. Nestled between the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake, the city is located in one of the most picturesque places on earth. The lowest point within city boundaries is 4,210 feet near the Great Salt Lake, and the highest is Grandview Peak at 9,410 feet. The Great Salt Lake (48 miles wide and 90 miles long) is the world’s second largest saltwater lake and the largest lake in the western United States. The city is the cultural, financial, educational, technological, commercial, and communications hub of the Intermountain West. Utah was named the
most technologically advanced state in the 2008 Digital States Survey. Salt Lake is also home to world-renowned medical and technology industries. Cultural and ethnic activities flourish in Salt Lake City and its vibrant downtown features dining, shopping, music and ethnic festivals, art galleries, professional symphony, opera, theater and dance. The annual Sundance Film Festival, which is the largest independent film festival in the U.S., attracts movie stars, celebrities, and thousands of film buffs to the area every year. According to P3/ Production Update Magazine, Utah is one of the “10 Best States in the Nation for Film.” Professional sports franchises in Salt Lake City include the Utah Jazz (NBA), Real Salt Lake (Major League Soccer), the Salt Lake Bees (AAA baseball) and the Utah Grizzlies (East Coast Hockey League).

Dr. Chris Hill at the press conference announcing Utah’s move to the Pac-10 Conference in 2011-12.
nder the direction of Dr. Chris Hill, University of Utah athletics has achieved unprecedented conference and national success. The New Jersey native, now in his 24th year, was just 37 years old when he was appointed Utah’s director of athletics.
2009
In 1998, Hill joined the University’s senior administrative cabinet as a special assistant to the president. Hill has participated on several NCAA committees, including a five-year term on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee from 2004-09. He chaired the Championships/Competition Cabinet from 1997-98, was a member of the administrative committee for the NCAA Management Council, and served on the executive committee of the National Association of Collegiate Athletics Directors from 2002-06. But Hill’s biggest impact has been felt on the U. campus, where his legacy is one of capital improvements, academic excellence, student-athlete support and winning programs. Under Hill’s leadership, Utah football became the original “BCS Buster” in 2004, and is now 2-0 in BCS bowl games with victories over Pittsburgh in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl and Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl. The 2004 Utes (12-0) finished No. 4 in the national rankings, while the 2008 Utes (13-0) earned a No. 2 national ranking. Utah is 11-3 in bowl games during Hill’s reign. The basketball programs are two others to thrive under the direction of the former Rutgers’ player and Utah assistant coach. Utah’s men’s team advanced all the way to the 1998 NCAA Championship game and has 13 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1990—making the Sweet 16 five times and Elite Eight twice. The women’s basketball team has 14 NCAA appearances— making the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once. The Utes have also captured multiple national championships in gymnastics and skiing, and the gymnastics team has made the NCAA Super Six team finals 16 times. In prior positions at the U., Hill was the Crimson Club director of development from 1985-86, a graduate assistant coach on Bill Foster’s basketball staff in 1973-
74, and an assistant coach for Jerry Pimm from 197981. He served as the executive director of United Cerebral Palsy of Utah from 1981-85 and developed a housing project for people with severe physical disabilities. His many accolades include becoming the firstever recipient of the Mountain West Conference’s Commissioner’s Award in 2004, a 1981 Milton Bennion Fellowship, the 1984 Utah Recreation Therapy Association Outstanding Service award and a 1996 Utah MS Sportsperson of the Year award. He was a 1998 Inductee into the Jersey Shore Hall of Fame. In 2001, the National Consortium for Academics and Sports gave him its Degree Completion and Outreach and Community Service Honor Award.

Hill, 60, currently serves on the Regence BlueCross BlueShield Board of Directors and the Catholic Community Services Board of Directors. Hill won three letters in basketball at Rutgers and co-captained the 1971-72 team. His bachelor’s degree from Rutgers is in math education (1972). He also has a master’s in education (Utah, 1974), and a Ph.D. in educational administration (Utah, 1982). Hill taught in the University’s special education department from 1983-85. He coached boys basketball at Granger High (Utah) from 1975-79, winning 4A Coach of the Year his first year. His wife Kathy is a faculty member in the U.’s department of special education in severe disabilities. She received the 2010 College of Education Service Award. They have two children, Aly and Christopher, and two granddaughters, Addie Rose and Lily Marion. Aly played soccer for the University of Oregon and received a master’s of social work degree from Utah in 2002. She is now a social worker for students with disabilities in the Salt Lake City school district and is married to former Ute All-America skier Ryan Forsyth, B.S. ’00, JD ’05. Academic/Career Counseling As an academic institution, the University of Utah enjoys a richly deserved reputation for excellence in education. The Utah athletics department works hard to ensure that each of its student-athletes take advantage of the academic opportunities offered. Mary Bowman, Utah’s associate athletics director for studentathlete support, oversees academic advising, career counseling and the NCAA Life Skills Program. She is assisted by director of athletic relations Manny Hendrix in the areas of community service, job internships and mentoring.

NCAA CHAMPS / Life skills At the University of Utah, student-athletes enjoy much more than winning programs and an outstanding education. They are also educated in areas like career planning, community outreach and personal development.
Award-Winning Features • Community Service • Career Development • Ute Speakers Bureau • Resume Writing Workshops • Media Training Workshops • Nutrition Seminars • Stress Management Seminars • Conflict Resolution Seminars • Student-Athlete Mentor Program • Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
The Utah athletics department boasts a nationally-recognized Student-Athlete Services department headed by Associate Athletics Director Mary Bowman. Director of Major Gifts Manny Hendrix runs the Partnering with U. program, which provides internships and summer jobs. Hendrix also oversees the Varsity Club—an organization for former Ute athletes. Utah’s athletic teams have been involved with the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program since 1996. The awardwinning program offers workshops on topics like resume writing, interviewing skills and transition into the work force. The Utah athletics department was one of three recipients of the 2004-05 Program of Excellence award for its CHAMPS program. The Ute Speakers Bureau trains student-athletes in public speaking and schedules them to speak to children at local schools on topics like drug abuse, goal setting, the importance of education, making smart choices and self-esteem. Utah student-athletes reach out to more than 5,000 young students in the Salt Lake valley each year. Ute teams also participate in numerous community service projects.
The personal development facet of Utah’s Life Skills program involves workshops in nutrition, stress management, diversity, eating disorders, relationships, sexual responsibility and conflict resolution. Also popular with Utah’s studentathletes is the Student-Athlete Mentor program (SAMS). Representatives of each team are given formal training by the staff of the U.’s Campus Wellness Connection. SAMS participants relay the information to their teammates and other athletes. Utah’s SAMS program is a two-time recipient of a coveted NCAA Choices grant (1997 and 2009). The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), like SAMS, is comprised of representatives from every Utah team. Participation in the CHAMPS/Life Skills program complements the outstanding educational and athletic experience already firmly in place at Utah. At the U., preparing for success after college is a big part of the game plan.
