2011 UTAH TRACK & FIELD

Kyle Kepler Head Coach • Sixth Year • Northern Iowa, 1998/2004 Kyle Kepler is heading into his sixth year as the head coach of the University of Utah women’s cross country and track & field programs. Kepler’s organization and attention to detail have allowed him to develop a solid foundation and create a competitive program that has steadily improved each year. In 12 years of coaching at the NCAA Division I level, Kepler has seen 32 conference champions, 129 all-conference athletes, 33 regional qualifiers, 23 all-region athletes, 22 NCAA qualifiers, and nine NCAA All-Americans. Kepler’s influence on his athletes is not just visible on the track, but also in the classroom. The women’s cross country team has been honored by USTFCCCA as All-Academic four out of the previous five seasons. The track and field team has been a USTFCCCA All-Academic team during three of the previous six seasons. The Ute cross country squad earned the 12th-highest team GPA in the country in both 2007 (3.64) and 2008 (3.65). 2009-10 During the 2009 cross country season, Kepler guided one of the youngest teams in the country to a sixth-place finish at the Mountain West Conference Championships, with two freshmen finishing in the top 30. At the NCAA Mountain Regional meet, four of Utah’s five scoring runners were freshmen. Kepler not only coached the young athletes with a high level of performance, but emphasized the importance of academics with five of his cross country athletes achieving academic all-conference status. At the MWC Indoor Championships, the Utes finished fourth overall for the second consecutive year. In outdoor track and field, Utah finished sixth overall at the conference meet, but scored 70 or more points for the second straight year. At the MWC Indoor Championships, Utah’s distance medley team comprised of Amanda Mergaert, Chelsey Kaplar, Lucy Yates, and Alyssa Abbott set a new school record and won their first conference title with a time of 11:38.59. The distance medley team finished nearly 11.5 seconds faster than second-place BYU, who had won the event nine of the 10 previous years prior to Utah’s victory. Abbott went on to win her first individual conference title in the 3,000 meter run (9:55.54) the next day. As a freshman, Mergaert claimed the runner up spot in the mile run in a new school record time (4:51.21). Sophomore Langley Iverson claimed all conference honors in the high jump with clearance of (5-8.75) that gave her a runner up finish as well. Sarah Grimm (weight throw) and the 4x400m relay team were third-place finishers and earned all-MWC honors. Utah’s DMR ended the season ranked 14th in the country after running a school record 11:13.77 at the Notre Dame Last Chance qualifying meet. The outdoor season saw Abbott run to Utah’s first ever Drake Relays championship in the 1500m with a time of 4:23.48. She was also the conference champion in that event with a time of 4:29.98. Grimm broke the school record in the hammer throw with her toss of 207-1.75 at the Mark Falmo Invitational. Grimm (hammer throw), Kaplar (400m hurdles), Iverson (high jump), and the

On the track, Shapard broke her own school record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.07 at the Arkansas Twilight. She also went on to win her second consecutive MWC 400m hurdle title. Shapard was named to the All-West Region Team after a third-place finish at the NCAA West Region Championships. At the NCAA Championships, she advanced to the semifinals and finished 15th overall. Josefin Berg had a podium finish at the MWC Championships where she was an All-MWC performer after placing third with a hammer throw of 182-3. She qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Track and Field Championships, where she placed 22nd overall with a throw of 185-10.

4x400 meter relay earned all MWC honors. Yates qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in her career, where she finished 23rd overall in the 800m event. Her time (2:06.21) in the preliminary round at the NCAA West Regional Championships set a new Utah school record. Between indoor and outdoor track and field, Kepler guided his athletes to 16 All-MWC honors. Grimm qualified for the NCAA West Region Championships and was ranked in the top 10 in the nation for the hammer throw during the last half of the season. Kepler saw eight athletes qualify for regionals under the new qualifying system. Twenty athletes from the track and field team also earned academic all-conference honors. 2008-09 The 2008 season was a banner year for Coach Kepler and the Utes. He coached the cross country team to a third-place finish at the MWC Championships, which is the highest finish in school history. En route to that third-place finish, the Utes defeated defending conference champion Colorado State. The team also had a top-10 finish in the NCAA Regional Meet, placing sixth overall. Abbott (9th) and Chelsea DiGrazia (21st) were named to the NCAA AllMountain Region team. Abbott advanced to the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championships where she placed 76th with a time of 21:00.5, missing all-American status by 19 seconds. The successful momentum transferred into the track and field season as Kepler coached his athletes to 135 new personal bests between the indoor and outdoor seasons. The team finished fifth at the MWC Outdoor Championships. Senior Chelsea Shapard won the 400m hurdles for the third consecutive year, while Grimm and Iverson won the hammer throw and high jump titles, respectively. Seven Utes were named to the all-conference team in four events.

The Utes finished sixth in the outdoor MWC Championships and seventh at the indoor MWC Championships. 2006-07 During the 2006 cross country season, Kepler guided freshman Abbott to a top-25 finish at the MWC Championships (23rd) and a top-50 finish at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships (46th). After only a year under Kepler’s coaching, the Utes improved to sixth-place in the team standings. During the track season, Kepler saw seven all-MWC performers between the indoor and outdoor seasons, and coached two MWC outdoor champions: Shapard and Amanda Feigt. Both qualified for regionals along with Abbott, Mandie Rowell and Susan Atwater. Shapard and Feigt were also NCAA qualifiers during the 2007 outdoor season.

Personal Prior to coming to Utah, Kepler served as Northern Iowa’s head men’s and women’s cross country coach and assistant track and field coach for two seasons. He was on staff at UNI for a total of seven years, serving as an assistant cross country coach for five years prior to being named head coach in 2003. Kepler was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2003 after leading the Panthers to an MVC title. The Panthers won 12 MVC titles among cross country and indoor and outdoor track during his tenure with the Panthers. Kepler has coached nine NCAA Division I All-America athletes and has had 20 of his athletes qualify for the NCAA Cross Country or Track and Field Championships. He served as the meet manager for the 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championships and PreNationals meet. Kepler was also named the meet director of the annual A. D. Dickinson Relays, one of the largest high school indoor meets in the nation. Kepler was a varsity athlete at University of Northern Iowa. He took part in both cross country and track and field for the Panthers, serving as a team captain during the 1997-98 school year. As an athlete, Kepler was a member of five MVC championship teams. He earned all-conference honors nine times during his collegiate career, was a two-time all-region cross country selection and a six-time Academic All-MVC honoree. Kepler holds both master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the Northern Iowa. He earned his master’s degree in physical education in 2004 and graduated with a bachelor’s in secondary education-geography in 1998.

Feigt was a USA Track and Field national qualifier in the 400m hurdles where she was a semi-finalist. Abbott was junior national qualifier in the 800m run. 2005-06 The 2005 cross country runners also thrived under Kepler’s direction. While the Utes finished seventh at the MWC championships, he saw three personal-best performances from his team at the 6km conference championship meet. Kepler also guided two athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2006. Vanessa Mortensen qualified in the hammer throw and just missed All-America accolades with a 10th-place finish (190-7), while Feigt was a first-time qualifier in the 400m hurdles (1:00.7). In addition to the four new school marks in 2006, Kepler, a Webster City, Iowa native, also helped his athletes set 144 new personal bests.

Kepler and his staff coached two athletes (Shapard and Grimm) to the NCAA Track and Field National Championships. Shapard went on to qualify and compete at the 2009 USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships, finishing 21st overall. Iverson also qualified and competed at the 2009 USA Track and Field Junior National Championships.

When 2006 was all said and done, he saw four of his athletes (Feigt twice, AJ Roby and Mortensen) garner all-conference accolades, upping his career total of all-conference athletes to 80. In addition to the all-conference honors, Kepler mentored another 19 conference champions.

2007-08 In 2007, Kepler coached the cross country team to an improved fifth-place finish in the MWC Championships, including three top-25 finishers. At the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, Abbott finished 24th overall and was named to the NCAA All-

Outlook

Last year, was a very successful year for the young University of Utah women’s track and field team. Now in his sixth year as head coach, Kyle Kepler led the Utes to a fourth-place overall finish at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships, and sixth place at the MWC Outdoor Championships. Under Kepler’s lead, Utah had eight athletes qualify for the NCAA West Regional Championships, with one continuing on to the NCAA Championships. “Overall, I thought we performed well last year. We were hoping to finish a little higher outdoors, but we had a few key injuries and illnesses at the wrong time, which really hurt us,” said Kepler. This season the Utes find themselves more experienced. The team is comprised of two seniors, nine juniors, 22 sophomores, and 12 freshmen. With veteran presence and leadership, Utah is prepared to compete with the conference’s elite teams. The even distribution of young experienced athletes will add to the Utes depth and competition. “This season we have to continue to focus on doing the small things right on a daily basis,” says Kepler. “If we want to get into the top three at the conference meet, qualify more athletes for the regional and national meets, our focus and commitment have to be at its best every day.”

Kepler believes that sophomore Amanda Mergaert will make a big contribution this season. Mergaert is coming off an impressive performance in the 2010 cross country season. In cross country, Mergaert became the second Utah athlete (Abbott-2008) in three years to qualify for the NCAA Championships, where she finished 45th out of 255 runners. She also became only the third Utah cross country athlete to earn MWC Athlete of the week honors, since the Utes joined the MWC in 1999. At the 2010 USA Outdoor Track & Field Junior Championships, Mergaert finished fifth in the final round of the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:35.37. She also led off the MWC champion distance medley relay and was the runner up in the mile at the MWC indoor championships. With a year’s worth of experience behind them, sophomores Megan Combe and Jenny McCune will be leaders on this year’s distance squad. Both performed very well in the 2010 cross country season. Sophomore Nikki Dotter and freshmen AuraLea Fain, Alexis Laws, and Rebekah Winterton are all coming off solid performances in the cross country season. They will continue improving their abilities as they move onto the track.

In the hurdles, sophomore Angela Kaplar looks to build on an impressive 2010 freshman season. At the 2010 indoor Mountain State Games, Kaplar competed in the 60m hurdles preliminaries, where she finished in first place with a time of 8.75. Her time was a new personal best and ranks third on Utah’s all-time performance list. She finished fifth at the MWC Outdoor Championships in the 100 meter hurdles. She also set a school record of 13.90 in that event in 2010. Kaplar will primarily be competing in the short hurdles along with fellow sophomores Delaney Fox and Stephanie Muelleck.

In the vertical jumps events, the Utes are returning veteran leadership in junior Langley Iverson. Last season, Iverson established a new personal best and finished third in the high jump at 5-10.5 (1.76m). At the beginning of this year, Iverson was slowed by a back injury, but is working towards where she ended up last year.

The Utes will be strengthened in the hurdles with the contributions of freshmen Rosalie Griffin and Kayla McMurray. Volunteer Coach Amy Otis, who was the 2009 NCAA Pentathlon champion while competing at BYU, will be in charge of developing the underclassmen hurdlers.

On the first day of the 2010 Outdoor MWC Championships, Theresa Waybright set a season-best mark with a height of 12-3.5 (3.75m). Throughout the summer, she has continued to improve her strength and conditioning. Waybright and the jumps athletes will be under the watch of volunteer coach Andrew Levin.

The young group of sprinters will be led by sophomores Alyssa Johnson, Lauryn McKay, and Ashley Mosley. At the MWC Outdoor Championships, McKay and Mosley took seventh and eighth place in the finals of the 400-meter dash. McKay was seventh at personal-best time of 55.79, followed by Mosley’s lifetime-best pace of 55.80. Johnson’s solid freshman season, including a third-place finish (56.71) in the 400-meter dash at the indoor MWC meet, gives Kepler confidence going into this season. The sprinters will be coached by Burke Bockman and student assistant Chelsey Kaplar. This year’s throwers have a big gap to fill, after losing standout Sarah Grimm to graduation. The Utes are depending on sophomores Anneli Stahl, Nikkie Rudder, and Candus Aiello to fill the spot. Kepler will also be looking to true freshman Destanae Howerton-Davis to make her mark this year. Tapio Kuusela will have a primary task to develop the young group of throwers.

The distance group will feature several young faces, but will be highlighted by the return of senior Alyssa Abbott. Coming off of an IT band injury, Abbott looks to continue where she left off in 2010. Abbott is the reigning indoor conference three-kilometer champion and anchored the winning distance medley relay, which posted a season-best time of 11:38.59 and finished the season ranked 14th in the country. During the outdoor season, she was the 1500-meter MWC champion and won the same event at the Drake Relays.

Junior Klaudia Rokossa is healthy after missing last year with an Achilles injury and has looked good in fall workouts. Her return will give the Utes experienced depth in the jumping events.

“Waybright could make the biggest strides of the group this season, if she can continue to improve technically,” said Kepler. Junior Brianna LeRoy will compete in the multi-event for Utah this season. Last year LeRoy accumulated career-high total points with 4,670 at the Outdoor MWC Championships. She finished fifth in the heptathlon, and turned in the fourthbest long jump at 17-4.75. “Our expectations for this year will be to work hard, have a positive mental attitude, and work for and with each other,” Kepler said. “We need to be focused daily at practice and schedule the right meets for each athlete to ensure moving forward in the conference standings and getting as many athletes to the NCAA championships as possible.”

“Grimm is tough to replace because she was not only important on the track, but was a great team leader and student,” said Kepler. “Stahl will lead a young, but deep group of throwers who will try to fill the big shoes that Grimm leaves behind.”

Kepler believes that Abbott’s leadership will also play a large factor in developing the younger athletes. Junior Lucy Yates is coming off an exceptional sophomore season. Last season, Yates set a school-record time of 2:06.21 in the 800-meter event at the NCAA West Preliminary meet. In the 800-meter, Yates advanced to the semifinal round at the NCAA Championships, where she finished 23rd overall.

Alyssa Abbott returns from an IT band injury to lead the Utah distance runners.

NCAA and USA Championships Success The University of Utah track and field program is committed to helping its student-athletes realize their fullest potential on the conference, regional and national levels. In the last five years, Kepler’s teams have effectively rewritten Utah’s record book. Utah track and field athletes have recorded 242 new all-time top10 performances. Among those performances are 26 new school records.

Anneli Stahl qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw in 2010.

Klaudia Rokossa qualified for the 2009 NCAA West Regional in the pole vault.

Lucy Yates reached the semifinals in the 800m run at last season’s NCAA Championships.

Ashley Mosley qualfiied to be in the 400m race at the 2010 U.S. Junior Championships.

In 2010 alone, Utah track and field athletes combined to record 218 new personal bests, seven school records, and had eight NCAA Regional qualifiers. The program also saw Lucy Yates go to the NCAA Championships, sent eight to the NCAA Regional Championships, and had six athletes crowned conference champions. Another five athletes reached the U.S. Senior or Junior National Championship meets. Success at Utah goes beyond the personal and institutional levels. In the last four years, Utah has sent 28 different athletes to the NCAA Regional meet with eight of those athletes advancing to the NCAA Championships. There have also been eight conference champions to go along with 41 all-conference performances. With Olympic-level facilities, nationallevel coaching staff and a worldrenowned academic institution, it’s easy to see why the University of Utah is a program rising to the top.

McCarthey Family Track & Field The University of Utah officially dedicated the McCarthey Family Track & Field on Oct. 23, 2010. Honored at the proceedings were philanthropists Tom, Phil, Sarah and Maureen McCarthey. Representing their late brother Shaun was his widow Ning. The McCartheys, longtime Utah athletics supporters, provided a generous lead gift of $2 million. The University of Utah’s Campus Recreation Services and Administrative Services departments funded the remaining $600,000 of the $2.6 million project. “The McCarthey family has always been very generous throughout our community and the country, for that matter,” said Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill. “We are very excited that they were so charitable to our program and made this longawaited track a reality. The addition of the McCarthey Family Track & Field comes at a great time for the University of Utah. It will not only serve our student-athletes, it will also benefit many other groups and individuals throughout the campus.” “We believe that students and people of all ages need to have a place to run and jump and play games,” said Phil McCarthey. Until the McCartheys stepped forward with their gift, the University of Utah had gone 28 years without an on-campus track and field. A track in old Rice Stadium was removed during an expansion of the stadium back in 1982 and the Utah track team has been training at off-campus sites ever since. “The McCarthey Family Track & Field is monumental in so many ways,” said Kepler. “As the new home for our track and field program, this facility will give our student-athletes a world-class training and competition venue. In addition to the competitive advantage it offers us, we will now have a more flexible practice schedule, which will enhance the academic opportunities for our studentathletes. The McCarthey Family Track & Field will also send a very clear message to prospective recruits about the vision of our program’s future, which includes developing some of the best track and field student-athletes in the country. We will be forever thankful to the McCarthey family for its generous support of this facility and our program.” During designated times when it is not reserved for use by Utah athletics, campus recreation and club sports, the track will be open to the public. The 400-meter track has nine 42-inch wide lanes with a Beynon Sports Surface--a surface also found on tracks at several other NCAA schools, among them Oregon, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Iowa. The interior of the track has a 75 x 125-yard AstroTurf field, along with areas for the throwing and jumping events. The McCarthey Family Track & Field will be illuminated for night use by four banks of permanent lights. There will be lawn-style spectator seating on the berm along the east side. The facility was designed by Losee Architects’ Sports Division and the general contractor was Big D Construction.

The Olympic Oval

Cross Country Venues

Utah’s track and field athletes have the opportunity to train at one of the finest indoor facilities in the nation. The Utes utilize the Olympic Oval located in Kearns. There, they train on the 442-meter indoor track that surrounds the Oval speed skating ice dubbed as “The Fastest Ice On Earth.” Eight world and 10 Olympic records were set here during the Winter Olympics in February 2002.

Rose Park is the home course of Utah cross country. The University of Utah has hosted the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships 15 times at the venue over the last three decades, including the 2010 meet, as well as the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championships.

A Mondo Super X track has been installed with four lanes around the ice plus an eight-lane, 110-meter sprint zone. The track has been marked according to NCAA and IAAF standards. The facility serves as the indoor training ground for Utah’s track and field athletes. They can run in a climate-controlled temperature of 63-65 degrees. The Oval is one of the rare indoor track facilities in the state, providing year-round training capabilities.

For non-competition training, the Salt Lake Valley as well as the surrounding area offers the Utes a lot of options and is considered to be one of the top 20 running cities in the United States by several of the best running publications and experts. The University of Utah distance running corp has access to some of America’s greatest running trails. These trails consist primarily of dirt, grass, crushed rock, or other runner friendly surfaces. All of these trails are located at elevations ranging from 4,500-8,000 feet. The breathtaking scenery of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains serve as a backdrop to one of America’s most beautiful and cleanest cities -- Salt Lake City.

The Bonneville Trail runs through the university campus, university research park, above Utah’s famous Red Butte Gardens, and by Hogle Zoo. It is a dirt trail with rolling terrain and the best view of the entire valley. City Creek Canyon Trail is a popular running and biking avenue among Salt Lake locals. A portion of this trail includes running through downtown Salt Lake City, a view of the state capitol building and the World Business Center for the Church of Jesus Christ Later-Day Saints. The canyon trail includes a path that is primarily dirt and another that is more suitable for biking. Liberty Park is another training favorite among the U’s distance runners. It includes a 1.45 mile woodchip running trail where various workouts are performed. Pipeline Trail is located in Millcreek Canyon which is only 15 minutes from the University of Utah campus. This out-and-back, 11-mile roundtrip trail is located at 6,000 feet elevation. The greenery of the canyon is surrounded by 10,000-foot peaks and combines an incredible view of the Salt Lake Valley at trail’s end.

Rose Park is the home of Ute cross country. The venue has hosted 15 NCAA Mountain Regional Championships, most recently in 2010.

Athlete Development Academic Services

The Utah cross country team has a variety of resources available to it to care for both the player’s physical and mental well-being. The Utes train in the new Alex Smith Strength and Conditioning Facility at the Dee Glen Smith Athletics Center. Smith, a Utah alum and NFL quarterback, donated $500,000 as the lead gift for the renovation and expansion of the existing strength and conditioning facility at his alma mater. The current elite training facility has 16 full racks with Olympic platforms, a large dumbbell training area complete with 12 0-90 degree incline walk-up benches, and a large cardiovascular area complete with treadmills, cross trainers, stair steppers and spin bikes.

The strength and conditioning program concentrates on strength training, speed development, flexibility, mental toughness, conditioning, injury prevention and motivation. Under the direction of Doug Elisaia, the director of strength and conditioning, the cross country program works with Director of Olympic Sports Strength and Conditioning Jon Webster. He is assisted by Kenny Rufino.

As an academic institution, the University of Utah enjoys a richly deserved reputation for excellence in education. The Utah athletics department works to ensure that each of its student-athletes takes advantage of the academic opportunities offered. With three full-time athletic academic advisors, the U. provides specialized academic counseling for its student-athletes.

To care for the athlete’s injuries, the Utah athletics program maintains a partnership with a veteran sports medicine team supervised by Dr. Bob Burks, director of the University of Utah Sports Medicine Center at Red Butte Clinic. The sports medicine staff is headed by director Trevor Jameson and associate trainer Deb Willardson. The cross country team works with Jameson and graduate assistant Hannah Kropf on a daily basis.

The U. employs four full-time academic advisers for its student-athletes. The department is under the direction of Director of Athletic-Academic Services Lucas Moosman. Rob Rainey oversees the academic counseling for the track & field team. Also on the staff are Matt Leituala and Beth Brennan.

Other resources available to Utah track & field athletes include a sports psychologist and nutritionist.

The Ute academic team monitors the studies of each student-athlete to ensure he or she is making progress toward a degree. The academic advisors also dispense their knowledge of departmental and University requirements, and assist with course registration and the exploration and selection of majors.

Research The University of Utah ranks in the top 35 public research universities in the nation, with particular distinction in medicine, genetics and engineering. University of Utah geneticist Mario R.
