2011 UTAH SOFTBALL With the infusion of nine newcomers as well as the departure of a former all-Mountain West Conference pitcher and center fielder, the University of Utah softball team hopes to end its two-year streak of fifth-place finishes in the MWC and move up to the upper echelon of the league. “We have talent throughout our lineup,” fourth-year head coach Amy Hogue said. “We have more athleticism, too. We have nine new kids, which is a huge number and a big makeover of our team. This fall was the best fall we’ve had since I’ve been here so I’m excited to see what we can do this spring.” Utah had 16 players on its roster last season and will enjoy an 18-player squad as it heads into the 2011 campaign. While the difference may seem negligible, Hogue believes her team will benefit from the increase not only because of improved depth but also more defined roles. “Our goal was to get our roster to 18 players this year,” Hogue said. “But I didn’t want to rush and sign players just for numbers. I wanted to make sure everyone had a role. If someone goes down with an injury, everyone knows who’s going in. I didn’t want to just have bodies to fill in. It’s so much more comfortable to have some depth.” The influx of newcomers that will provide Utah’s increase in depth comes with a lack of experience at the NCAA Division I level that may take time to overcome. At least two new starters in the outfield, a new pitcher and second baseman will make their Ute debuts in 2011.

Pitchers Even though Utah has a stable of four pitchers, junior Generra Nielson has emerged as the leader of the group. Nielson earned Region 18 honors twice at the College of Southern Idaho and was named the Utah 2A State Player of the Year during her senior season at San Juan High School in Blanding, Utah. “[Nielson] came right in and had a great fall,” Hogue said. “She proved that she is ready to lead our team this spring. “I have not gone into the spring with as much confidence since I started coaching here. A strong pitcher in the circle is what this program has been waiting for.” Brittany Parker, a returning senior pitcher, is recovering nicely from shoulder surgery and is work hard to be full strength by the start of the season. Joni Cook will provide depth for the pitching staff and will also contribute to the team in other aspects.

2 • Season Outlook

“[Cook] is our No. 1 pinch hitter off the bench and could potentially start at DP,” Hogue said.” Freshman Naomi Amu will be a dual threat for the Utes on the mound as a closer and at the plate. “[Amu] is a power hitter who will help replace [Utah’s career home run leader] Kara Foster in the lineup,” Hogue said. “She had three home runs in the first game this fall, but she’s a freshman so she will probably take her knocks. “We recruited [Amu] as a hitter but we knew she had experience on the mound. She throws the ball hard, hitting 66-67 miles per hour, and looks ready to throw innings right out of the chute for us.”

Catchers Senior Brooke Olson returns as the full-time starter behind the plate for the Utes. “[Olson] has once again been voted team captain and is clearly our team leader on the field,” Hogue said. Olson has started 90 games during her Utah career and led the team last season with 60 hits and finished second on the squad with a .341 batting average. The Bluffdale, Utah native tied for second in the MWC with 13 runners caught stealing and was sixth in the league with 269 putouts in 2010. “Recruiting to replace her has not been an easy task,” Hogue said. Freshman Chalese Fankhauser will serve as the backup catcher during her first season in the program. “She has great strength and speed and just needs time to develop,” Hogue said. “She is an exciting freshman because every week since she’s been here, she’s improved. She is one of the most athletic players I have ever coached and her ‘pop time’ to second base is unmatched. She’s learning from the best [Olson] and it will be fun to see her develop and potentially battle with Alyssa Garcia next year for the spot behind the plate.” Garcia, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, will redshirt this season after having knee surgery.

Infield The left side of the infield will remain the same as last season with third baseman Whitney Holm and shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina all that much more experienced. “It’s fun to see ‘Whit’ and ‘Hoop’ getting comfortable,” Hogue said. “They have matured and have really learned how to take charge of the left side.” When including starting left fielder Hannah Clements as well as Olson, this quartet is expected to really have an impact on offense for the Utes as each hitter is rock solid in the batting order. “They’re planning to play every day with no hesitation,” Hogue said. “Olson, Clements and Holm could be the first, second and third spots of our batting order. That’s a solid part of our lineup.” The same cannot be said for right side of the field as several changes were made during the offseason. Former second baseman Tia Palauni is slated to take over the starting spot at first base in her junior season. “[Palauni] has done a nice job transitioning over from second base, taking that role that Lindsey Palmer played for us last year, as not just a defensive-minded player, but also the leader of the infield,” Hogue said. “She is a steady mind and has a lot of experience as a starter for us.” Sophomore Jackie Sweet, a transfer from UC Santa Barbara has been penciled in as the starter at second base. But the competition for playing will continue well into the season as sophomore Katelyn Elliot, a transfer from Salt Lake Community College, and Taylor Austin, a freshman from Bountiful, Utah, both have at the position during fall practice. “[Sweet] is a nice addition to our team and really has the potential to lock down that spot,” Hogue said. “Her production on offense is really going to say a lot about whether she pins down the position or if we float playing time at second base. She is in the same class as ‘Hoop,’ so it would be really fun to keep the two of them up the middle playing together for a while.”

Brooke Olson owns a .341 career batting average.

MEDIA GUIDE Outfield

Schedule

Freshman Tara Glover, a Grants Pass, Ore., native, is a potential impact player who is slated to start in center field. Glover is a left-handed hitter who will be a true `tablesetter’ at the plate for the Utes and also offers incredible range in the outfield.

The Utes will test their mettle at the beginning of the season as they face several opponents who finished in the top 25 of last season’s final USA Today/NFCA Division I rankings at the Kajikawa Classic and Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.

“[Glover] is ready offensively and defensively,” Hogue said. “She is the fastest kid on the team. She played at a high level this summer and transitioning to NCAA Division I softball has been relatively easy for her.”

“Our non-conference schedule is difficult as always,” Hogue said. “If we’re competitive in the first two weekends, it will show that we’re going places with this team. Having a successful non-conference season is critical heading into league play because you never really get to start with a clean slate. The confidence of the team rolls over. Your record doesn’t carry over, but your confidence does.”

Sophomore Kayla Ensminger, a transfer from Phoenix College, joins the Utah lineup after hitting .400 last season and earning all-region recognition as well as winning the school’s Best Infielder award. “[Ensminger] has done a great job, not just in the outfield but offensively. She is a fearless, aggressive, and tough player and was very clutch this fall. She does a little bit of everything --- runs and throws well and hits with power. She is going to be hard to beat out for playing time, but Cheyella Myers is right on her tail.”

Utah begins MWC play in the Deseret First Duel against BYU April 8-9 in Salt Lake City.

Pitchers Naomi Amu Joni Cook Generra Nielson Brittany Parker Catchers Brooke Olson Chalese Fankhauser Alyssa Garcia Infield Taylor Austin Katelyn Elliott Whitney Holm Kelsi Hoopiiaina Cheyella Myers Tia Palauni Jackie Sweet Outfield Sandi Bowles Hannah Clements Kayla Ensminger Tara Glover

Myers, a freshman from Taylorsville, Utah, was arguably the best prospect in the state of Utah coming out of Tooele High School and will serve as a utility player at nearly every position on the field during her first season with the Utes. “[Myers] will have opportunities to prove herself at the plate,” Hogue said. “Since she is so versatile on defense it will help her chances to crack the lineup.” Sophomore Sandi Bowles will present another option for Hogue in the Ute outfield. “[Bowles] was a defensive specialist last year and earned 14 starts as a freshman,” Hogue said. “She is looking to improve on that number this year.”

Hannah Clements will be the vetaran of the Ute outfield heading into the 2011 campaign.

Whitney Holm will be a focal point of Utah’s batting order throughout this season.

Head Coach • Fourth Season • Utah, 1994 Hogue got her start in coaching as Utah’s graduate assistant coach from 1994-95. From there she went to Alta High School as an assistant coach from 1994-96.

Amy Hogue leads the Utes in her fourth season as head coach. The fifth coach in program history, Hogue compiled a 76-87 record in her first three seasons at Utah and sports a 273-169 after eight seasons as a head coach during her career. Under Hogue’s guidance, Diana Phillips earned an NFCA FirstTeam All-Region award in 2008 and five different Utes have been named to the All-Mountain West Conference teams. Hogue played for the Utes from 1991-94 and earned second team All-America honors as a senior. In garnering All-America accolades, she hit .455, had 101 hits, 222 at bats and 55 runs scored. All of those numbers still stand as the school’s top marks for a single season. Hogue also holds season records for triples (7) and runs scored (55). She led both the 1991 and 1994 squads to the College World Series. Hogue built and mentored Salt Lake Community College’s softball team from 1999-2004, instantly creating a successful program. She went 197-82 (.706) in her time with the Bruins. The pinnacle of her tenure with the Bruins came in 2004. SLCC was the regional champion that season and placed sixth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. In 2000, the Bruins’ inaugural campaign, they won the Scenic West Athletic Conference title and repeated as champions again in 2003.

Since 1995, Hogue has coached an accelerated travel team. Currently called The Sting, she has guided her club squad to a .725 winning percentage. In the last two seasons, The Sting has racked up 137 wins. Her playing career at Utah was equally as impressive. As a player, she helped the Utes win two conference titles, two conference tournaments and two regional titles in making two Women’s College World Series appearances. She captained the 1994 squad that tallied a school-record 51 wins. In addition to the team’s success, Hogue was Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, first team all-region and second team All-America in 1994. She was a three-time All-WAC player and was the team MVP in 1994. Hogue’s name appears throughout the record book at Utah. In Utah’s career record book, she still ranks third in at bats (703) and stolen bases (72), fourth in hits (239), and fifth in both hitting (.340) and runs (125). Her 101 hits in a season was one of the longest-standing marks in the NCAA, and she still holds the NCAA record for at bats in a game (14).

Cody Thomson enters his second season as a full-time assistant on the Ute coaching staff. Thomson served as a volunteer assistant coach for Utah since 2004, working primarily with the Ute pitchers. A former USA Softball Men’s National Team pitcher, played for the national team 2004 - 2009. 2007 he helped the national team finish second at the ISF Men’s World Cup in Prague, posting a 2-0 record from the circle with 18 strikeouts. He was named Best Pitcher at the NAFA World Series in 2006. A four-time ASA All-American, Thomson helped the Salt Lake Miners finish second at the ASA Men’s 23-under National Championship twice. Thomson continues to pitch and this past summer he led his team to win the ASA B National Championship. Thomson began his coaching career at his alma mater, Copper Hills High School, in 1996, and served as an assistant at Southern Utah University in 1998. Before joining the Utes coaching staff, Thomson has taught pitching lessons in the Salt Lake Community and surrounding areas since 2002. Thomson is married to the former Amanda Tuft and has three children: Mikaela, Chase and Cayden.

The Utah standout briefly played professional softball. After college, she toured with the WPF Storm and was later drafted and signed to play with Durham Dragons.

Breanne Smith is entering her first season as an assistant coach at the University of Utah. Before joining the Ute coaching staff, Smith had been an assistant coach at Riverton High School for the last seven years where she helped develop two current Utah starters, catcher Brooke Olson and shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina. As a player, Smith was a stand-out starter and team captain for Utah State from 1998 through 2002, where she finished sixth on the school’s career home run list. She caught over 300 games for the Aggies in four years. She was named the Big West Conference Field Player of the Week and Utah State Athlete of the Week over her career and was a USU Female Athlete of the Year finalist in 2002. During her senior year, Smith was second in the Big West with a .730 slugging percentage. During her career in Logan, Smith piled up several academic accomplishments, including CoSIDA Academic District VII All-American recognition in 2002. She was also a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American Scholar Athlete, CoSIDA All-District Academic team selection, Academic All-Big West honoree and a United States Achievement All-American Scholar in 2000 and 2001. Smith was on Utah State’s Dean’s List from 1999 to 2001 and was a USU Scholar-Athlete in 2000 and 2001. She was a finalist for Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2000. Along with her coaching duties, Smith has taught private catching lessons for the last eight years and has coached summer and travel ball for four years. Smith has also created a DVD entitled The Boss, where viewers are taken through a step-by-step process of each catching technique. Smith attended Bingham High School where she was a first-team all-state and all-region selection. The Utah native is married to Justin Smith. The couple has three boys, Jensen (5), Drew (3), and Breck (3 months).

Hogue graduated from Utah in 1994 with a sociology degree and earned a Masters from Utah in social work in 1996. The Sandy, Utah, native is married to Sean Hogue and has three children, Brennan (10), Kai (8) and Tessa (5).

At SLCC, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 firstteamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine AllAmerica standouts. In addition to the players’ success, Hogue was named the SWAC Coach of the Year for her efforts in 2003. With the Bruins, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 first-teamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine All-America standouts. In addition to the players’ success, Hogue was named the SWAC Coach of the Year for her efforts in 2003. Prior to moving to SLCC, Hogue was an assistant coach at Utah from 1996-99 where she was involved in all facets of running the program.

Ute Softball Field

MEDIA GUIDE

Bleacher Seats Capacity: 500 Built: 1995 Elevation: 4,657 feet Largest Crowd: 603 vs. BYU (4/13/2002) Record at Complex: 115-72

The Utah softball team plays all of its home games at Ute Softball Field. Built in 1995, Ute Softball Field is nestled at the bottom of the foothills of the Wasatch Mountain Range. It sits to the north of Ute Soccer Field and to the east of the HPER complex. The field, itself, is professionally maintained and its infield dirt is the best in the business: its stabilizer dirt is also found in Major League Stadiums. Thanks to a generous donation from the Katherine W. Dumke and Ezekiel R. Dumke Jr., Foundation, the soccer-softball complex is currently undergoing ongoing phased renovations. Long-term plans for the $2.5 million soccer-softball facility call for a complete rebuilding of the softball field and the addition of lights. The softball field will be rotated 180 degrees to face northeast and a new permanent seating structure, including ticketing, concessions and restroom facilities, will be constructed. A press box that will be utilized by both softball and soccer will also be added and the entire facility will be fenced in. A pedestrian mall that will run along the south side of the soccer and softball complex is currently being funded by the University. The pedestrian mall will connect the new University Medical Center TRAX line to the U.’s athletics corridor, which includes the soccer-softball complex, the Jon M. Huntsman Center, Crimson Court and Ute Natatorium.

Spence Eccles Fieldhouse

A key addition to Utah’s athletic facilities is the 75,000-square foot Spence Eccles Field House. Opened in Nov. 2004, the spacious structure houses a regulation size football field with FieldTurf. The multi-purpose structure allows for year-round training for many of Utah’s athletic programs. With enough space for baseball and softball to practice defense, retractable batting cages and pitching mounds also allow the teams to get in a rigorous session of batting practice. The fieldhouse also boasts restrooms, storage for the golf and soccer teams and a first aid/taping room. The entry way will open into a mini theater featuring a “Legends” photographic display of former Ute greats and containing interactive exhibits.

Athlete Development Academic Services

The Utah softball team has a variety of resources available to it to care for both the player’s physical and mental well-being. The Utes train in the new Alex Smith Strength and Conditioning Facility at the Dee Glen Smith Athletics Center. Smith, a Utah alum and NFL quarterback, donated $500,000 as the lead gift for the renovation and expansion of the existing strength and conditioning facility at his alma mater. The current elite training facility has 16 full racks with Olympic platforms, a large dumbbell training area complete with 12 0-90 degree incline walk-up benches, and a large cardiovascular area complete with treadmills, cross trainers, stair steppers and spin bikes.

The strength and conditioning program concentrates on strength training, speed development, flexibility, mental toughness, conditioning, injury prevention and motivation.
