The Ute women are looking to record some of the best relay times in the country. Leadership will be crucial to the young team. Captains Ken Tiltges and Dani Caldwell will play big roles and will be looked to for guidance. “Caldwell will be a big one in teaching girls how to handle themselves in the locker room and get ready for races,” Winslow said. “Another senior Kayla Buck, who has really improved over her three years here, and I feel will have a great senior year. “On the men’s side we will look to Tiltges. He will redshirt this year, but what he means to us in the locker room is quite a bit. We will also look down through our sophomore class, Nick Soedel and guys like that who will step up to take a leadership role.”

Season Outlook
Last season, the women’s squad held a 10-7 record and went 2-5 in conference meets, placing seventh at the Pac-12 Championships.

Utah Men’s Team
The record books were obliterated as the men broke records in all five relay events and four individual events. Returners Nick Soedel, Ken Tiltges, Alexandre Fernandes, Winter Heaven, and Bjorn Gunnarsson played roles in making Utah history.
In 2011-12, Utah divers totaled four top-10 finishes and three top-five finishes at the Pac-12 Diving Championships. Nelson Foo earned a bronze medal in platform dives and was the only Ute to achieve a podium finish. As a whole, the men’s divers scored the third most points as a team at the Championships.
Sprint Freestyle: The sprint freestyle events will be the strength of the Ute men this season. Current Utah 100 free record-holder Soedel will head the sprint freestyle effort and will help along a talented group of freshman. The veteran trio of Gunnarsson, Heaven and Fernandes will be influences as well.
At the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, the Utes grabbed three top-10 finishes, narrowly missing qualification for the NCAA Finals.
Distance Freestyle: Ryan Hansen was at the top of his game at the end of last season, and it is hoped that he will carry that momentum into the 2012-12 campaign for his senior season. Kira’ly and John Oliver will also impact the Utes in distance freestyle events. Butterfly: The butterfly events will be left in the hands of sophomores Heaven and Fernandes, while Kira’ly will join the bunch and will be looked to in the 200 fly. Backstroke: The backstroke events will be left to freshman Kron to lead the Utes. Fernandes and Ian Walker will join the ranks as well.
Schedule
The Utes kicked off their 2012-12 campaign with the Red and White Alumni meet on Oct. 6 and then headed into their competition season with a multi-team meet at UCLA. The women’s squad topped Oregon State, but fell to UC Santa Barbara and UCLA, while the men found a win over UC Santa Barbara.
The following day the women’s team competed against USC at McDonald’s Swim Stadium where they were bested by the Trojans. All five divers from last season will return to the Ute squad Oct. 27 was the first home meet for the Utes, as the women including Foo, Brandon Stoppelmoor, Caleb Herrick and Jasmine welcomed Cal to Ute Natatorium. Matkovic. Kersten Merry will compete this season after redshirting, while Jacob Crayne joins the Utes as a freshman. Both are The season continues in Las Vegas, as both teams face UNLV on expected to further boost the success of the diving program. Nov. 10. Nov. 16-18, the Utes will compete at the annual Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. The Deseret Dual is scheduled for the Dec. 1, with the Utes taking on the Cougars crimson grounds.
Breaststroke: The freshmen will lead this event as well, with Brandon Young, Logan Jastremski and Kyle Owns all playing roles in the Utes’ success.
The team then travels to Tempe, Ariz. to face Arizona State on Dec. 16. Back-to-back home meets are scheduled for the Utes after a month-long stretch without competition. The Utes will see Denver on Jan. 18 and the women will take on Oregon State the following day.
IM: Current 200 IM Utah record holder Tiltges will be redshirting, leaving a large gap in IM events. The Utes will rely on freshman Kira’ly and Ian Clarke to fill in the holes. Relays: Last season, the Utah men broke every school record for relays at the Pac-12 Championships and are expected to parallel, if not exceed last year’s accomplishments. Relay members Soedel, Heaven, Fernandes and Gunnarsson return and will be joined by the likes of Kira’ly and Kron.
Utah Diving will then compete in Colorado Springs at the Air Force Diving Invitational January 25-26, with the men’s team following suit with a meet against the Cadets on Feb. 1. The women will take on Washington State in Pullman, Wash. on Feb. 15 to round out the regular season, while the men take on USC at home Feb. 22-23 to sum up their season. The post-season begins Feb. 27-March 2 with the Pac-12 Women’s Championships in Federal Way Wash. The Pac-12 Men’s Championships are to be held in Long Beach, Calif. March 6-9. NCAA Championships begin with the Zone Diving Championships in Colorado Springs March 14-16. The Women’s Championships follow March 21-23 in Indianapolis, Ind., with the Men’s Championships taking place March 28-20 in Indianapolis to complete the 2012-13 NCAA Swimming and Diving season.
