2013 UTAH SOFTBALL
PREVIEW COACHING STAFF
Utah went 26-6 in non-conference play in 2012, a stretch that included a 12-game win streak.
“Jackie turned a corner last year as an offensive player. I think she’s always thought of herself as a defensive player who was going to help her team because of what she did at second base. I don’t know the exact point, but sometime around midseason last year, she decided that she can help us offensively. She really did a nice job in the Pac-12 against the best pitchers in the country so she is going to be fun to watch this year. Her expectations are going to be higher than they’ve ever been at the plate.”
“Last year was the toughest schedule we’ve ever had and this year’s schedule is tougher,” Utah head coach Amy Hogue said. “If we can continue to hit that .500 mark with the schedule we have this year, I believe we will be postseason-bound.” Utah finished last season with a .500 or better overall record for the second straight season, the first time the Utes have posted had back-to-back .500 or better seasons since 2001. “We changed some things up in our preseason schedule,” Hogue said. “The competition we’ll face in this preseason is tougher to help us prepare a little more for the Pac-12.”
2012 REVIEW TRADITION
Infield
Hoopiiaina, a three-year starter at shortstop, once again teams with Jackie Sweet, who enters her third season as Utah’s starting second baseman, to form a record-breaking double-play combination that will be the backbone of Utah’s stout defense.
Hoopiiaina was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention squad last season after finishing third on the team with a .322 batting average to go with 19 stolen bases on 19 attempts. “We have three returning players who hit .300 or better last season,” Hogue said. “We definitely have more depth this year offensively, so we’re not going to have to rely on our top three hitters. This should

“(Mendenhall) has already offensively earned a spot in our hitting lineup, which means that she will either be playing right field or DP,” Hogue said. “She is a starter for us right now. ‘Bug’ is a gamer. She is just one of those players that finds a way to get it done. She’s a long-ball threat and gives us chances to jump on a team with one swing.” Incoming transfer Shelbi Everett will bring wealth of versatility not only to the Ute outfield, but the entire team.
Ramirez enters her second campaign with the Utes with more poise and confidence. “Mariah is the whole package,” Hogue said. “She is our most stable pitcher with the confidence and experience to throw a bunch of innings for us.”
Schedule
Shaum started 39 games behind the plate during her first season with the Utes in 2012. Pacheco begins her first season with Utah after an accomplished prep career at Union High School in Casa Granda, Ariz. Everett has proven herself to be a reliable option in clutch situations as she was named to the AllEugene Region Team at the NCAA Tournament with BYU last season.
“There’s a battle going on between Shaum, Pacheco and Everett behind the plate,” Hogue said. Utah’s hardest thrower, junior Naomi Amu, posted a team-low “All three of them are extremely talented. All three 2.97 ERA in 36 appearances last season as she compiled an 8-9 could be starters, which means there may be times record in 120.1 innings. where all three of them will get a shot back there. I don’t think we’re going to stick with just one in Freshman Kayce Nieto has all of the tools to succeed at this level the preseason for very long at one time. They’re all and has a lot of spin on her deliveries to the plate. going to get a shot to earn that spot.”
An exciting season awaits in 2013 as Utah will move into its new home, Ute Softball Stadium, and take on a schedule that includes 32 games against 16 opponents who qualified for the 2012 NCAA Tournament. All 24 games of Utah’s Pac-12 slate will be against opponents who were ranked in the top 25 of the final USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll last season. The Utes begin league play Mar. 22-24 against 2012 Women’s College World Series semifinalist California in Berkeley, Calif. Utah will officially open Ute Softball Stadium with a single game against Utah Valley on Mar. 26 at 6 p.m. “It’s going to be one of the best facilities in the Pac12,” Hogue said. “It’s already attracting recruits and it should. This program has waited and waited for this and we’re so thankful to be given such a nice place to call home.”
“(Amu) will get her fair share of starts as well,” Hogue said. “When she is on, she is likely our toughest pitcher to beat. Early on this season, we’ll learn what role Kayce can play. I expect Mariah and Naomi will start the season as our leaders and we’ll figure out how to mix Kayce in. They each have different styles, which is why a combination of all of them is going to be our best way to win games.”
“(Everett) is a great addition to our team and a definite long ball threat as well,” Hogue said. “If she’s one of our top nine hitters then we will find a position for her. She’s had reps in three different positions: right field, DP and catcher, but had some health issues in the fall. If she can remain healthy, she gives our lineup a bunch of different options.” In center field, junior Chalese Fankhauser is fighting to secure a spot in center field. She has already started 78 games for the Utes during her career, but sophomore Trina Gomez, a transfer from SLCC is also eyeing the spot. “Defensively, Chalese has been our best center fielder,” Hogue said. “Although, Trina has not let us ignore the fact that she’s ready to start for us. She’s an exciting player, especially because of what she brings offensively. She is a slapper with amazing speed, something we were missing last year. She’ll steal bases for us and is one of our top three outfielders defensively. Both of them will see time out there early and I look forward to the battle.”
Kelsi Hoopiiaina (left) enters her fourth season as Utah’s starting shortstop. Katelyn Elliott (right) hit .336 last season to go with eight home runs, 26 RBI and 45 hits. Jackie Sweet (far right) tied for second in the Pac-12 with Hoopiiaina after turning 15 double plays.
Utilities/Designated Players Kendal Bergman will also have opportunities to swing a bat this spring, primarily as a pinch hitter, and senior Sandi Fawson will substitute in the outfield late in games and as a pinch runner. Freshman Eryn McCarver is a pure and versatile athlete who has experience as a middle infielder, catcher and outfielder and is planning to redshirt this season. Bergman tagged first career homer against North Dakota last season and made first career start against Howard (3/10/12). The Wheat Ridge, Colo., native also started in right field in second game of series at No. 15 UCLA. Fawson has played in 159 games over her Ute career with 53 starters and has swiped 23 career bases on 29 attempts. The Herriman, Utah native was second on last year’s team with 11 steals on 13 attempts. “Each of our utility players have such specific roles for us right now,” Hogue said. “Bergman has a chance to be our first off the bench as a pinch hitter. She’s a great hitter and had some success in the pinch-hitting role last year. I feel confident that she’ll be someone we’ll use early for a pinch-hit RBI. Sandi is one of our faster players and does a nice job in the outfield and with pinch running.”

“(Sweet and Hoopiiaina) turned more double plays than anyone else in the Pac-12 last year and that was with a rise-ball pitcher throwing most of our games,” Hogue said. “Being more of a down-ball pitching staff this year, I expect that number to go up and we’re going to need them to. Any chance we have to get two outs with one ground ball is going to be necessary for our success this year. Our middles are amazing to watch and can “turn it” with the best of them.
“We have battles on both corners of the infield,” Hogue said. “Taylor and Kristen are battling for the spot at third base. Both can get the job done defensively, but it’s just a matter of who’s going to hit the ball a little better. They’re two totally different types of hitters, too, so it may depend on who we’re playing and what we need in that game. Stewart is more of a power hitter and Taylor is more of a skilled, left-handed slapper who will set the table and move runners. There will be a need for both of them.”
“Kate showed us a lot last year as a freshman and she improved the most over the offseason,” Hogue said. “She came back ready and she is better in all of the areas that we asked her to get better in. She’s a better base runner. She has more power. I guarantee she’s going to give us more home runs this year.”
“Having three capable pitchers is a luxury,” Hogue said. “What we learned last season in the Pac-12 is that until you have someone who’s throwing 70 miles per hour with a good change-up to compliment it, you really need to use a combination of pitchers to win ball games. We’re going to have to use a combination of two, or even three pitchers. Coming out of the fall, sophomore Mariah Ramirez has been our top performer.”
Catchers A trio of capable athletes will compete for the starting bid behind the plate as lone returning catcher Shay Shaum is joined by freshman Shelby Pacheco and Everett.

Utah’s veteran middle infielders both return for their senior seasons, but each corner position will feature new faces.
Sophomore Desaray Akins will be the primary backup at first base, while junior Taylor Austin will compete with freshman Kristen Stewart to fill the vacant third-base spot.
Dickman has solidified a starting position in left field after earning an Honorable Mention nod on the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team after starting in 53 games during her first season with the Utes that saw her sport a .285 batting average with 21 RBI during her rookie campaign.
COACHING STAFF
“We have a lot of physical talent going into the season, but I look forward to seeing who steps up in our games as leaders,” Hogue said. “Katelyn Elliott and Kelsi Hoopiiaina have been voted to be our captains and they lead in two completely different ways. ‘Elli’ is the talker, while ‘Hoop’ is the doer. We will look to them a lot to replace to leadership we graduated last year.”
Elliott moves from her starting role as Utah’s designated player into the field at first base. Elliott earned honorable mention status from the conference after emerging as Utah’s No. 3 or 4 hitter in 2012. She finished second on the team with a .336 batting average to go with a .582 slugging percentage and a .390 on-base percentage.
“We are already seeing some battles for the positions in the outfield,” Hogue said. “We’re talking about four positions, with three outfield spots and a designated player. Kate Dickman and Marissa Mendenhall are two of those four that have earned the start going into the first weekend. They have both shown consistency at the plate last year to be considered starters. The other two spots will rotate for us as we find out who is going to help us win ball games.”
Pitchers
For the second straight season, the Utes will feature three capable pitchers who will provide Hogue with plenty of options in the circle.
MEET THE UTES
The Utes welcome back seven returning starters, but will have to compensate for the loss of five accomplished athletes, three who served as the captains of last year’s team.
At the plate, Sweet hit .303 on the year and also boasted a .388 on-base percentage and a .515 slugging percentage last season.

2012 REVIEW TRADITION
At the plate, Kara Foster became Utah’s all-time career home run leader under Hogue’s watch as she hit 64 career round-trippers and is second on the school’s all-time list with 165 career RBI. Hogue’s players have also been successful off the field as well as three Utes were named to the Pac-12 Softball All-Academic Team in 2012 in addition to a total of 28 All-Academic awards received through five seasons in the Mountain West Conference from 2007-11. Also last May, Kendall Bergman earned the Outstanding Freshman Academic Achievement Award from the Mining Engineering Department.

Hogue got her start in coaching as Utah’s graduate assistant coach from 1994-95. From there she went to Alta High School as an assistant coach from 1994-96. Hogue also coached an accelerated travel team, called The Sting. She guided her club squad to a .725 winning percentage. In her last two seasons, The Sting racked up 137 wins. Hogue’s playing career at Utah was equally as impressive. From 199194, Hogue helped the Utes win two conference titles, two conference tournaments and two regional titles in making two Women’s College World Series appearances. She captained the 1994 squad that tallied a school-record 51 wins. She earned second- team All-America honors as a senior. In garnering All-America accolades, she hit .455, had 101 hits, 222 at bats and 55 runs scored. All of those numbers still stand as the school’s top marks for a single season. Hogue also holds season records for triples (7) and runs scored (55). She led both the 1991 and 1994 squads to the College World Series.
Thomson is married to the former Amanda Tuft and has four children: Mikaela (13), Chase (10), Cayden (7) and Quinley, who was born Dec. 31, 2011.
The Las Vegas native started her collegiate playing career at Colorado State University-Pueblo before transferring to UNLV for the 2005 and ‘06 seasons. Despite only playing her junior and senior seasons with the Rebels, Livreri made a significant impact on the program. She finished ninth in the school record books in career RBI (75) and eighth in career walks (60). In UNLV’s single-season record book, Livreri is fourth in walks with 31 in 2006, eighth in doubles with 12 in 2006, eighth in RBI with 38 in 2006 and tied for 10th in most games played with 63 in 2005. Livreri was selected to the Mountain West Conference’s AllTournament and All-Conference Teams in 2005. She played one season in the Italian Professional League for Nuoro after completing her intercollegiate playing career. Livreri earned a bachelor’s degree from UNLV in University Studies in 2006 and obtained her Master’s in Higher Education Leadership in 2008.
In addition to the team’s success, Hogue was Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, first team all-region and second team All-America in 1994. She was a three-time All-WAC player and was the team MVP in 1994.

Nielson posted one of the best single-season performances on the mound in school history in 2012. She led the Pac-12 and was 10th in the NCAA with a school single-season record 294 strikeouts in 2012. She was also third in the league with 237.0 innings in the circle and finished fourth with 21 wins.
Prior to moving to SLCC, Hogue was an assistant coach at Utah from 199699 where she was involved in all facets of running the program.
Thomson began his coaching career at his alma mater, Copper Hills High School, in 1996, and served as an assistant at Southern Utah University in 1998. Before joining the Utes coaching staff, Thomson has taught pitching lessons in the Salt Lake Community and surrounding areas since 2002.
Livreri was previously an assistant coach at UNLV from 2009-11 after spending the 2007 and `08 campaigns as a volunteer assistant coach. The Rebels went 153-126 (.548) with Livreri on the bench, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009.

Employment opportunities, culture, quality of life and recreation are some of the reasons why Salt Lake City is consistently named one of the nation’s best cities. In the June 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, Salt Lake City was No. 5 on its list of the “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.” Forbes Magazine ranked Salt Lake City the third-best big city for jobs and fourth-best city for tech jobs in May 2012. The magazine also recognized Utah as the “Best State for Business and Careers” for the second straight year in 2011. Men’s Fitness magazine named Salt Lake the “Fittest City in the Nation” in 2009. Nestled between the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake, the city is located in one of the most picturesque places on earth. The lowest point within city boundaries is 4,210 feet near the Great Salt Lake, and the highest is Grandview Peak at 9,410 feet. The Great Salt Lake (48 miles wide and 90 miles long) is the world’s second largest saltwater lake and the largest lake in the western United States. The city is the cultural, financial, educational, technological, commercial and communications hub of the Intermountain West. Utah was named the most technologically advanced state in the 2008 Digital States Survey and rated as one of the top 10 most socially networked cities in America. Salt Lake is also home to worldrenowned medical and technology industries.
MEET THE UTES
Cultural and ethnic activities flourish in Salt Lake City and its vibrant downtown features dining, shopping, music and ethnic festivals, art galleries, professional symphony, opera, theater and dance. The annual Sundance Film Festival, which is the largest independent film festival in the U.S., attracts movie stars, celebrities and thousands of film buffs to the area every year. According to P3/Production Update Magazine, Utah is one of the “10 Best States in the Nation for Film.” Professional sports franchises in Salt Lake City include the Utah Jazz (NBA), Real Salt Lake (Major League Soccer), Salt Lake Bees (AAA baseball), Utah Blaze (Arena Football) and Utah Grizzlies (East Coast Hockey League).

2012 REVIEW
Salt Lake City, home to the University of Utah and the state’s capital city, offers an unrivaled blend of metropolitan life and recreational opportunities. With 186,440 residents, Salt Lake City is the largest city in the state and its metro population of 1,124,197 ranks in the top 50 in the United States. Yet Salt Lake City maintains the charm of a small western city.
