Feature President & CEO Message: Jim Yorgason As I look back on the summer and all the amazing things we accomplished thanks to your support, I'm a little surprised that fall has already arrived. The first-ever expansion of our Summer Feeding Program into Utah County meant that we were able to serve over 80,000 meals to children across the state. This accomplishment is only slightly overshadowed by the fact that, thanks to an outpouring of support from our corporate partners, we are starting this school year's Mobile School Pantry Program with 53 school sites scheduled for monthly distribution, a far cry from last year's 36 sites. As exciting as these accomplishments are, the holiday season is just around the corner. As you become wrapped up in the excitement of the holidays, please don't forget that hunger knows no season — our Meal Makers Monthly Giving Program provides an easy, cost-effective way to fight hunger year-round. Thank you for your support!
Client Corner Christopher is a third grader who lives with his single grandmother and three sisters. His favorite thing to learn about in school is math, and when he grows up, he dreams of being a policeman, a soccer player and an astronaut! Christopher participates in our BackPack Program through his elementary school, and shares the food he receives with his younger sisters. According to Christopher, “Sometimes it's hard and I go to bed hungry. It makes it hard to sleep and wakes me up when my stomach growls." Most evenings, his grandmother isn’t home to cook, so his older sister takes on that role, sometimes using the food items he receives in his backpack. *Names have been changed to protect identities.
Did You Know? This September, Utah Food Bank and Feeding America are mobilizing to increase awareness about the issue of hunger across the country. To join the conversation, we invite you to share photos on social media with an empty paper plate featuring the message, “On an empty stomach I can’t ____.” The blank should contain something you can’t achieve on an empty stomach. Be sure to include #HungerActionMonth and @utahfoodbank and we will do our best to share it.
Spotlights Board Spotlight: Reed Grant Reed grew up in Tennessee and moved to Utah just over 20 years ago. He has been a member of our Finance & Audit Committee since January 2011 and served on our Board of Directors from 2011 through 2013, and again since July of 2015. He is passionate about his belief that having three meals a day should not be in question for members of our community, especially children. He is celebrating 20 years with Wells Fargo this year, and is currently in the role of Wealth Advisor for The Private Bank at Wells Fargo, although his banking experience dates back 30 years. Reed also serves on the Board of the Davis Education Foundation and considers education an important key to overcoming long-term food insecurity for families in our community. Reed and his wife live in Kaysville and have four grown children.
Volunteer Spotlight: Fidelity Investments Fidelity Investmentsš and Utah Food Bank have a history that dates back more than 30 years, which all began with a holiday food drive collecting 800 pounds of food. After many format changes, this food drive has grown to a fund drive that collected more than $200,000 during this year’s Summer Business Food & Fund Drive, bringing their grand contribution total to more than $1 million. Between volunteering monthly with the Mobile School Pantry, and a large annual volunteer effort in conjunction with their fund drive, Fidelity employees have provided more than 200 volunteer hours this year alone. Their commitment to volunteering extends across a broad range of social services helping to strengthen Utah’s communities. Utah Food Bank is honored to have the support of such a dedicated and giving group of people who have never lost sight of the issue of hunger in our state. Utah Food Bank is proud to announce we are now accepting donations via PayPal! Visit our website for more information.
Recent Events Summer Business Food & Fund Drive: June 1–August 31 This year’s annual Summer Business Food & Fund Drive was once again a resounding success. With close to 100 registered businesses participating, we estimate the amount of food and funds we will receive as a result of this effort will enable us to provide the equivalent of over 1.5 million meals for Utahns facing hunger. Returning sponsor Les Olson Company helped lend a strong voice to the urgency behind this crucial campaign and did an incredible job of rallying the support of their clients and employees. We are incredibly grateful to Utah’s business community for the tremendous work they do in rallying to help hungry Utahns through gifts of food, time and money.
Driving Out Hunger: August 22 Once again, the weather did not disappoint at our 5th annual Driving Out Hunger golf tournament, even if some swings did! Held at the exclusive Salt Lake Country Club, it was great to see 128 golfers stepping up to the tee to fill a plate. Unfortunately, no one was able to make a hole-in-one to drive off in a new car thanks to Riverton Motor Group, but one lucky player did score some great airline tickets thanks to Delta Air Lines. Special thanks to all of our players and sponsors, especially first-time Champion Sponsor Grandeur Peak Funds.
H.A.M. It Up Against Hunger Race: September 10 Our second annual H.A.M. It Up Against Hunger Race in St. George was a great way to engage Southern Utah residents in the fight against hunger, especially given that southern Utah’s food insecurity rates are some of the highest in the state. This family-friendly 5K began and ended at our Southern Distribution Center, a key link in helping us reach those who need it most in the region. Thanks to everyone who participated, and a special thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah.

Our mission of Fighting Hunger Statewide is only possible because of the devoted time, talent, energy and resources that the community provides. Without you, we could not help those who need it most. Here’s how you can help: Give Food. Everyone in Utah needs
to eat. When you donate food, you help make sure that everyone can. Locate a food pantry to drop off items or use Utah Food Bank’s Virtual Food Drive to save a trip to the store.
Give Time. It’s been said that time is
our most valuable commodity. At Utah Food Bank, we’ll help you put it to good use. Last year, Utah Food Bank utilized over 85,000 volunteer hours — the equivalent of 41 full-time employees!
Give Money. A $1 donation is actually
$7.35 worth of food and services. This is possible through generous food donations and tremendous community support. Utah Food Bank distributes resources statewide, and all contributions are tax-deductible.
