President & CEO Message When you consider that Utah Food Bank’s primary responsibility is to offer emergency food assistance through a network of 140 partner agencies located in every county across our state, our mission of Fighting Hunger Statewide gets complex. Fighting hunger in sparsely populated San Juan County, with poverty affecting 27% of residents, is vastly different from the same effort in densely populated Salt Lake County, where poverty affects 12% of residents. Add ethnic diversity and constantly shifting economic landscapes to the fact that our food bank has one of the largest coverage areas in the country, and it becomes clear why our organization must continually look to the future. Evaluating the challenges presented, while doing our best to offset these challenges, means that efficiency must always be at the forefront of our decision-making process. If you take what you hear about Utah’s remarkable unemployment statistics at face value, you may miss the fact that many of the clients we serve aren’t qualified for most of these newly created and well-paying jobs. It may be surprising that almost one-third of the households we serve have had at least one working family member in the past year. Unfortunately, being employed doesn’t necessarily mean that you can make ends meet. As Utah Food Bank looks with an eye toward the future, we must plan our next steps carefully to ensure we are prepared to respond to the needs of Utahns facing food insecurity, while maintaining a degree of flexibility with our services. When we receive information about a specific need for assistance not being met, we must be nimble enough to put the pieces into place to not only offer services, but also to implement a sustainable service that we can then replicate across the state. We’ve had several such experiences during the past year, and they serve to remind us that only when we remain flexible can we react quickly to shifting landscapes and continue Fighting Hunger Statewide.

Fighting Hunger Statewide Utah Food Bank is one of a handful of food banks across the country that distributes food free-of-cost to our partner agencies. In fact, Feeding America’s “Hunger in America 2014” study found that 86% of our 140 partner agencies statewide report that no longer receiving food from Utah Food Bank would have a detrimental effect on their ability to serve clients. We are committed to continuing to do business in this manner into the foreseeable future because we consider our partner agencies to be an extension of our work. These partners are necessary to help us reach those who need it most, Utah’s children. Most people have heard us say that 1 in 5 Utah children are not sure where their next meal will come from, a fact made even more staggering when you realize that 36% of all the Utahns we serve are under the age of 18 and one-third of those are under the age of 6.* This year brought childhood hunger into even sharper focus for us, so we dedicated many of our resources to finding ways to better serve Utah’s children. Even our seasoned staff was deeply troubled when the Salt Lake County library system reached out for help because children were spending countless after-school hours in our libraries. Sadly, this is not because of a love of reading, but because parents working long hours to make ends meet consider it a safe haven for children when they are out of school. Many of these children stay at local libraries until closing time, often well past when most of us have eaten dinner, and librarians were troubled by the fact that many of these kids were going from lunch through late evening without eating. We quickly developed and implemented an entirely new program aimed to specifically meet this need. By the end of the fiscal year, we were able to establish a partnership with the libraries that includes a resource for additional education, homework assistance and a prepackaged afternoon meal. This program started toward the end of our fiscal year with two Salt Lake area libraries participating and serving a total of 375 meals weekly. We look forward to continuing to expand this program at libraries across the Salt Lake Valley because, like hunger, this phenomenon is not limited to just a select number of communities in the area. To continue our emphasis on ensuring Utah’s children have the food resources necessary to thrive, this year also brought additional food assistance to local schools in several different ways. Children who lack sufficient nutrition are more likely to experience physical, emotional and developmental impairment, regardless of whether they are studying multiplication tables or calculus. When you hear of childhood hunger, you often think of young children, but our older youth and young adults are also in desperate need of help. To help reach this age group, we worked with local high schools and college campuses to establish oncampus food pantries. Utah Food Bank also spent time this year developing a new program, the Mobile School Pantry. We have been piloting this program for a few years at one local school, and its success motivated us to focus on expanding to reach more children in need. This program will be free to participating elementary schools’ students and their families because if a child is facing hunger, the entire family is often in crisis. Only when we can address hunger in a more holistic manner can we begin to provide a more stable foundation for these young children to succeed in school. Our planning process included purchasing a new truck solely dedicated to this program and identifying the schools with the greatest need. Our initial program launch will be primarily along the Wasatch Front, but we hope to be able to continue to sustainably expand this important program in the near future. By the end of the fiscal year, we had an astonishing 33 partners committed to helping us launch this program. This means that 33 schools will receive a visit from our Mobile School Pantry once per month for the duration of the school year, a far cry from the 16 with which we projected to launch. Much of this work can only be accomplished when Utah residents comprehend just how widespread the issue of food insecurity really is. While many of us are well aware of the issue of homelessness because of its high visibility, the numbers don’t lie. According to the 2014 Annualized Utah Homeless Point-In-Time Count, there were just under 14,000 people in Utah who experienced homelessness in the past year. Contrast that with the 423,000 Utahns who face food insecurity, and it’s obvious that although the two are inextricably related, we can only begin to scratch the surface of homelessness once the more widespread, and often forbearing, issue of hunger is tackled.

Food Collection Local Commercial Donations (23%) Utah Food Bank continues to expand efforts to procure more fresh fruits and vegetables, thereby increasing the nutritional benefit of food for clients. To achieve this goal, Utah Food Bank actively solicits food donations from each segment of the local food industry supply chain, including growers, processors, packagers and retailers.

Grocery Rescue (34%) Alliances with local grocery retailers provide a donation outlet for food that is nearing its expiration date but is still safe and healthy to eat. These donations primarily consist of nutritious, perishable food items, including fresh produce, dairy and meats that would otherwise be thrown away. This process provides much-needed nutritious food items while reducing food waste. We operate refrigerated trucks six days a week throughout the entire state, collecting this food from local retailers, which we then take directly to partner agencies and often in the hands of clients within 24 hours or less of pickup. Last year, this program’s partnerships with 232 grocery retailers across the state provided 13.5 million pounds of food for Utahns facing hunger, in addition to diverting wholesome food products away from landfills.

Government Commodities (17%) The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) are federal food assistance programs that provide supplementary food at no cost to Americans living within the federal government’s poverty guidelines. The CSFP program provides commodity food packages for pregnant and breast-feeding women, new mothers up to one year postpartum, infants, children up to their sixth birthday and seniors at least 60 years old who meet income eligibility requirements.

11/30/16 6:00 PM

Statewide Community Food Drives (5%) Statewide food drives assist Utah Food Bank in providing an adequate supply of food for local pantries, sourced from within their own communities. In addition, the variety of products received through these food drives offers a broader range of options than that provided by commercial donations and purchased foods. Scouting For Food, Stamp Out Hunger, Summer Business Food & Fund Drive, Hunger Action Month Food & Fund Drive and the Holiday Food & Fund Drive are the five statewide food drives that provide year-round opportunity for community participation, made easy by the planning, implementation and logistics provided by Utah Food Bank. In addition, Utah Food Bank provides logistical support and supplies to community organizations, groups and businesses to allow increased opportunities for Utahns to engage in the fight against hunger.

National Commercial Donations (17%) Utah Food Bank’s relationship with Feeding America® provides opportunities for food donations from outside the state, often at little or no cost. Utah Food Bank is the only Feeding America® affiliate in Utah, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that serve nearly every county in the United States. These important donations fill nutritional gaps and provide a broader variety of produce by maximizing national donation opportunities, including manufactured foods and goods and fresh produce not grown in the area.

Purchased Food (3%) Utah Food Bank’s emergency food distribution needs are largely met through generous contributions from individual donors, manufacturers, and local producers and growers. The growing need for special food items to fill nutritional gaps requires the occasional purchase of some food directly from producers and manufacturers.

Food Distribution Partner Agencies In 2015, Utah Food Bank’s statewide network of 140 partner agencies reached Utahns facing hunger in all 29 counties. Because many of Utah Food Bank’s partners could not survive if they had to pay for the food they receive, Utah Food Bank is one of a handful of food banks in the country that distributes food free-of-charge. This network of partner agencies consists of 107 emergency food pantries, 12 residential/ rehabilitation facilities, 12 youth programs, 5 congregate feeding sites and 4 shelters. Most food pantry partners have adopted a “Client Choice” model, which allows clients to make their selections in the same manner as they would in a grocery store, rather than receiving a prepackaged assortment of food. This model not only decreases product waste, but also promotes dignity and empowerment by allowing clients to choose the foods that best meet their needs.

Mobile Pantries Mobile Pantries provide additional support to individuals facing hunger with culturally suitable staples, including as much fresh food as available, in communities that are underserved by traditional brick-and-mortar pantries. Areas may be underserved because there is no local pantry, the local pantry is too small to store enough food to support the number of people in need, or the pantry lacks enough refrigeration to provide adequate fresh foods. Mobile Pantries also bring food to areas where clients lack sufficient transportation to access the nearest food pantry. Last year, Mobile Pantries served 165,186 individuals throughout the state.

Utah Food Bank Programs Kids Cafe Through this program, Utah Food Bank provided 282,803 healthy evening meals to Utah children facing hunger due to poverty last year. Meals are prepared on-site at Utah Food Bank by Kids Cafe kitchen staff and are immediately packed and transported to after-school sites where at least 50% of the children qualify for reduced-price or free school lunches. Participating children receive Kids Cafe meals on weeknights, which often serve as their last meal of the evening. Utah Food Bank provides up to 1,800 meals each weekday for distribution at 42 Kids Cafe sites, including Boys & Girls Clubs, community centers and elementary schools. Participating children report their favorite meals are tacos, chicken wraps and chicken dumplings.

BackPack Program This program works in conjunction with after-school programs to ensure that children facing hunger have access to food during weekends when they lack access to school meal programs. Each Friday throughout the school year, participating children receive a nondescript backpack containing easy-to-prepare, child-friendly food to help sustain them until they return to school on Monday. Last year, Utah Food Bank packed and delivered 63,630 backpacks of food to 35 sites, helping to mitigate hunger during weekends for the 1 in 5 Utah children who are food insecure.

Food Box Program Utah Food Bank provides free, monthly food assistance to homebound seniors and people with disabilities living in poverty. Each food box contains approximately one week’s worth of non-perishable food, along with milk, bread and fresh produce when available. Utah Food Bank often receives additional “luxury” items such as pet food and flowers that, when delivered, make life just a little nicer for those facing hunger. For many recipients, this regular visit by a caring volunteer is one of the few visitors they receive, offering a bright spot in their difficult lives. Last year, Utah Food Bank delivered 9,863 boxes to clients throughout the Salt Lake Valley.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) This federally funded program works to improve the health of low-income seniors at least 60 years of age, pregnant and breast-feeding women, new mothers up to one year postpartum and children up to their sixth birthday. The USDA ships nutritious food items directly to Utah Food Bank, including items such as canned fruits, vegetables, cereal, cheese and more. Last year, Utah Food Bank delivered 30,365 CSFP boxes, which were hand-delivered by volunteers and staff to individual residents and senior housing sites or picked up at local pantries.

Volunteer Support For the 10th year in a row, Utah has been crowned as the top state for volunteerism, with almost 41% of residents reporting that they volunteered in 2014*. Last year, Utah Food Bank reaped the benefit of this spirit of volunteerism, engaging 56,643 volunteers who collectively donated 85,079 hours of service. This is the equivalent of hiring an additional 41 full-time employees—something the budget simply can’t accommodate. Whether assisting with Mobile Pantry operations, serving Kids Cafe meals, delivering thousands of food boxes to homebound seniors and people with disabilities, assembling BackPack food packages or working tirelessly in both our Salt Lake and St. George warehouses, Utah Food Bank volunteers are tremendous assets. Volunteers also engage in special events and food drives and serve on the Board of Directors and advisory committees. A broad and diverse range of individuals and organizations regularly participate in volunteer efforts, including family groups, faith-based organizations, corporate groups, juvenile justice and youth groups, special needs programs, school groups, and social and community groups.

Utah Food Bank’s volunteer department continues to focus on a scheduling framework and project management strategy to maximize efficiency, ensuring the distribution of sufficient quantities and diverse types of food to our 140 partner agencies across the state. This focus also provides more positive experiences for volunteers. Each year, Utah Food Bank celebrates volunteerism at our Open Hearts Helping Hands luncheon. Last year, the following volunteers were honored for their dedication to our mission through volunteer service:

Corporate Group of the Year: O.C. Tanner Company

School Group of the Year: Fort Herriman Middle School

Board Member of the Year: Jill Duke

Individual Volunteers of the Year: Jolene Anderson & Genevieve Atwood

Group of the Year: Salt Lake Early Intervention—Utah State Juvenile Justice System

Put simply, without such an incredibly strong and engaged volunteer base, Utah Food Bank could not possibly provide this essential lifeline for Utahns struggling with hunger.

Food Drives Summer Business Food & Fund Drive June 1, 2014–August 31, 2014 The Summer Business Food & Fund Drive comes at a crucial time when demand is high because kids are out of school without access to school meal programs, but donations are low. This food and fund drive is designed to engage Utah’s business community in the fight against hunger because they, like hunger, do not take summer breaks. Last year’s efforts yielded enough food and funds to distribute the equivalent of close to 1.6 million meals, with businesses across the state of all shapes and sizes participating. Sponsor: Les Olson Company

Hunger Action Month™ Food & Fund Drive September 27, 2014 During Hunger Action Month,™ national attention turns to the issue of hunger. Utah Food Bank offers multiple opportunities and events to engage Utahns throughout the month, starting with Beating Hunger by a Mile and culminating with a statewide food drive hosted at Walmart stores. Last year, this statewide food drive resulted in enough food to provide the equivalent of almost 514,000 meals for Utahns facing hunger. TM

Speed to Feed Rally October 11, 2014 Utah Food Bank’s first annual Speed to Feed Rally was held at Fast Kart Indoor Speedway, where we had great fun burning rubber to fight hunger! Teams of eight drivers competed in prequalifying races leading up to the big day, when the winners went head-to-head for bragging rights (and a great trophy). All proceeds directly supported a scholarship program to help place children in after-school programs where they were able to receive evening meals through our Kids Cafe Program. Special thanks to Utah Food Bank’s Young Professionals Committee for organizing this fun and unique event!

Holiday Food & Fund Drive October 15, 2014–January 15, 2015 Utah Food Bank’s annual Holiday Food & Fund Drive is known statewide through its multimedia campaign and includes the annual Utah Human Race on Thanksgiving Day. Last year, Utah Food Bank introduced the “Green Light to Give” concept by discontinuing the distribution of donation bags, instead encouraging supporters to utilize bags they already had. This longstanding tradition rallies thousands of individuals, as well as hundreds of community groups and businesses statewide. Last year’s efforts resulted in enough food and funds to provide the equivalent of over 12 million meals for Utahns facing hunger. Scouting For Food March 21, 2015 Scouting for Food is an annual statewide effort involving Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and their leaders, who mobilize to gather food donations from residents with the assistance of Utah National Guard for transportation and logistics. Last year’s food drive introduced a new twist—in lieu of plastic bags, door hangers were distributed as reminders and offered residents the chance to make a financial contribution at Smith’s Food & Drug Stores statewide. Last year’s 29th annual food drive resulted in enough food and funds to provide the equivalent of close to 1.1 million meals. A special thank-you goes to Intermountain Healthcare for donating the printing of door hangers. Sponsor: Siegfried & Jensen Special thanks to: Great Salt Lake Council, Trapper Trails Council, Utah National Parks Council, Smith’s Food & Drug Stores and Utah National Guard

Stamp Out Hunger May 9, 2015 Last year was the 23rd anniversary of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, which continues to be an important single-day food drive both in Utah and across the nation. Last year, to continue the effort to “Go Green,” postcards were distributed as reminders in lieu of donation bags and residents were encouraged to use any bag or box they had at home. Each year, local letter carriers gather food from residences and bring it to post offices across the state, where Utah Food Bank volunteers load it onto trucks. Dismal weather conditions drastically affected the outcome of this statewide food drive, which resulted in enough food to provide the equivalent of 277,000 meals. Special thanks to: National Association of Letter Carriers, National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association and U.S. Postal Service
