Message From The President A very warm UTech welcome to new students. You have made an excellent choice by making Jamaica’s premier national University your place to proceed on your lifelong path to “Excellence through Knowledge.” You have entered an institution that is student – centred in focus where each student is provided with the opportunity to learn, grow, develop, and reach his/her full potential as a valued member of the UTech community, the nation and the global workforce. It is with this in mind that we are preparing all our students to be global citizens who have been equipped to contribute to development anywhere. The University continues to grow and develop exponentially and now has eight (8) academic units comprising three colleges and five faculties. The UTech Academy provides pre-university access through various course delivery modalities as well as continuing education and professional development programmes. In the last academic year, the Joint Colleges of Medicine, Oral Health and Veterinary Sciences comprising the College of Medicine and Public Health, College of Oral Health Sciences and the College of Veterinary Sciences were established and already Oral Health programmes are in full stride and at world class standards. It is noteworthy that through the commitment and dedication of our faculty, staff, alumni and our students, our University continues to expand its capacity for training and service despite declining Government subvention and a prevailing harsh economic climate. The next wave of development will be concentrated on developing the University’s Western campus to further enhance the institution’s capacity to sustain itself and to expand academic offerings to respond to current and future local, regional and global human capital demands. As you traverse the Papine campus you will also see upgrading work being carried out on several buildings aimed at improving the environment in which you will work, study and play. This is being supported through the ongoing UTech/CDB US$42.6 million Enhancement Project. I take this opportunity to implore all new students to take a responsible approach towards your education from the very beginning of your course of study so that you will reap the full benefits of the privilege of acquiring a world class tertiary educational experience. This is a privilege still held by less than 5% of the Jamaican population. I encourage you to read widely, focus keenly on your academic goals and explore all avenues that will challenge you to think innovatively, creatively and independently. Additionally, you should seek to become involved in campus life, as the experiences that you gain from that exposure will help to make you a more rounded individual. Do ensure that you participate in cultural activities, intellectual and sporting events, student clubs and societies, as well as community service. Read this Orientation Guide thoroughly and take advantage of all the channels for open communication and cooperation between the student body and the University’s faculty, administration and support staff. My best wishes to our entire student body for a successful and rewarding academic year. Prof. the Hon. Errol Morrison, OJ, Hon LLD, MD, PhD, FRCP (Glasg), FACP, FRSM (UK), FRSH (UK), FJIM
Message From The Registrar It is with pleasure and appreciation that I welcome you to ‘UTech Orientation 2013’ in Kings-ton, and at the Western Campus. This Orientation Week – August 18 – 24, is a short time, but we know that it will be of immense value to you during your student experience with us here at the University of Technology, Jamaica. For most of you, studying at this level will be a new experience. In addition, there are those among you who will be leaving home for the first time. This will be a transition not only for you, but also for your parents, guardians and spouses, for whom we have arranged special sessions as part of this Orientation Week. We start your experience at UTech by introducing you to the services that we will provide you; to the persons with whom you will interact in the various areas; and to the places that you will need to know both inside and outside of the campuses. This we do recognizing that the University represents a diverse community, and as incoming students you will add to this diversity. The orientation programme offers varied activities, including sessions that will focus on special groups, such as advanced placed students and international students. Our objective is to initiate the smooth integration of all new students into the UTech community. “Transformation through Higher Education”, is the theme for this year’s Orientation Week. It embraces and communicates the University’s commitment to your education and preparation as active citizens in the development of your respective countries, as well as in the wider regional and international communities. Making the best of your experience requires your own resolve to be successful and to take responsibility for your life as a student at UTech. Our ‘First Year Experience Programme’ will assist you as you as you move forward in your pursuit of academic and personal excellence. I encourage you to join this programme. Again, welcome to UTech and to Orientation Week 2013 and my best wishes for a successful and rewarding year. Elaine Wallace, PhD, MBA

Message From The Principal Welcome to all our new and returning students and all categories of staff to the University of Technology, Jamaica, Western Campus! The new academic year brings excitement for staff and students alike albeit for different reasons. I look forward to the buzz of activities on the university campus at the start of each year and this year should be extra special for us on the Western Campus. For one, I warmly welcome all students to the Dome Street campus in Montego Bay, the primary home of the UTech in Western Jamaica. Students and staff should be pleased to know that the major academic activities will take place at the new location and that they can expect significant improvement in the support activities, in particular from the Office of the Registrar. There will be improved visible and functional elements of learning and growth opportunities which will undoubtedly more fully support and enrich your university experience in the west. So please pardon our progress! Progress comes with some untidiness but with your help everything will fall into place quickly. Very soon you will begin to enjoy the new facilities and get on with the business of learning, growing and maturing, as you move towards your academic goals. All of us will be doing our best to settle into new study and work spaces. We crave your patience and help in making the transition as smooth as possible for everyone. I invite all our returning students and staff to help me welcome the new students and staff and to take steps to help them transition successfully into the university for the academic year 2013/2014. I am pleased to share that the Principal of the Western campus will finally have a stable work space from which she can meet and serve the university community. The University’s Head Office in Western Jamaica is now established on Market Street in Falmouth. As we settle into our two new locations and fill out the spaces with staff and services we are committed to continue to provide the customer care that all our students and staff deserve. In welcoming yyou to the Western Campus I also welcome our UTech Academy students and staff at the Trelawny Multipurpose Stadium in Falmouth , the Simmonds Plaza in Ocho Rios, our community of learners and instructors in Port Antonio, RuFamSo in May Pen, Papine and JIM on Hope Road in Kingston as well. With the New Year come new expectations from all stakeholders. The University leadership team anticipated and has sought to address many of the expressed needs. Where there are gaps, I continue to listen, take notes and will work within the limits of budgets and other restricted resources. This is with the determined effort to continue to make the Western Campus more fully resourced for all users in the shortest possible time. As you pursue your journey towards an excellent university experience, please remember to come with focus and determination to temper this experience with the opportunities to make friends, engage fully in personal and social development activities and to seize every moment to make the academic year memorable, productive, pleasant and safe. Here is wishing you a pleasant, productive very enriched academic year. May God bless you all. Professor Geraldene B. Hodelin, O. D, Ph. D., C. P. H. E.
