TAG DRIVE 2011 ENDS IN SUCCESS
UTECH DEBATERS TAKING IT INTERNATIONAL
The UTech Students‟ Union recently concluded their Tag Drive 2011, a week of fundraising activities which ran from November 4 to 12. The annual event, which usually includes an exciting range of activities, is aimed at raising funds to be donated to entities that cater to the less fortunate, with this year‟s focus being the Jamaica Association of Mental Retardation, Jamaica Correctional Services (Juvenile Institutions) and the Garland Children's Home in Montego Bay. Like all other past Tag Drives, this year‟s week of events was quite fulfilling and wellenjoyed by those who participated. The week commenced with a church service on the 6th, and concluded with a rural area collection drive on the 12th followed by a well-anticipated after-party in Ocho Rios. Within the week, there were several other happenings, including a slushy sale, celebrity dutch auction, fashion show, jerk day and car wash. With the co-operation of the students, the hard work of the Student‟s Union and the assistance of the sponsors, Tag Drive 2011 was a successful venture!
The UTech Debating and Public Speaking Society (UDPSS) is on a path to excellence, and seeks to maintain their track record of phenomenal performance through their participation in the 2012 World Universities Debating Championships. The Championships, dubbed the „Olympics of Debating‟, will be held in Manila, Philippines in December 2011January 2012, and will see over 1,400 students from 70 nations participating. This year, three teams will be representing the University, in a bid to maintain UTech‟s position as the top ranked institution in the Caribbean. The Society is also excelling otherwise – having recently defeated UWI at the second annual UWI Leads Debating Competition, and currently spearheading the first annual UTech National Debating Championships, the first tournament of its kind in Jamaica, with the aim being to encourage and develop the use of the British Parliamentary Style of Debating within tertiary institutions islandwide.
News from the West FRESHERS FETE The first staging of the UTECH Western Campus Fresher‟s Fete was a major success as the patrons turned out in their numbers to support. Dressed to impress the party fans of Montego Bay did not fail to flock the venue, by 11pm it was packed from wall to wall. With hardly enough space to move Tongue and Groove went from that place to the place. As the disc jocks kept the vibe ,there was hardly a person who could stand still. Students from UTech, the Montego Bay Community College, Sam Sharpe and the local socialites came out in their hundreds, the bar was kept busy as the energy filled crowd enjoyed Dj Blu from links along with other local favorites such as Crazy Neil, Kronilk Ent and our very own Dj from UTech main campus Dj News , they all took turns spinning to keep the fans dancing all night. Never mind the fact that the venue which consisted of an outer bar and balcony and an inside club. All hands were on deck as the Students‟ Union Western committee and the staff of Tongue and Groove did it all. The highlights of the night was the giving away of phone cards sponsored by Digicel along with a blackberry curve. Never mind that the digits kept going by so quickly we have yet to know if anyone won the free credit. When we asked a few of the patrons this is what they had to say “it did shot mi stay til it done” “can‟t wait for next year fi shell it down again”. Well on behalf of the Students‟ Union thank you for the support none of this would have been made possible without your support. 1
Council 2011 – 2012
INSIDE THE SUDENTs’ union Council
As Council members we not only hug our portfolios and work, we also have fun and bond as one unit. It all took place last summer when we shared a dorm and tolerated each other’s personality and living conditions, while planning for this academic year. Being Council members we have to tolerate each other as we are one family that work together to execute all plans to ensure that you the Students’ Union members experience a good year, and all your needs are met. Inside the Council is a fun place to be where there is never a dull moment it is like a T.V network, from Soap Opera to Judge Judy even comedy and cartoons. Our summer together on a co-ed dorm was too much to handle, I have to mention our naked mile runners who mysteriously lost their clothes from the shower, and our very hot council member that lost her glass of water from the fridge on a “HOT” summer night and took us all to “Court”. We also have numerous occasions
where we celebrated birthdays with the good old tradition of flouring with a modern twist, where everyone
would be chased and have to accept some of the flour during the celebrations. As Council members we have our quarrels and mishaps. There were times when members would not have survived in the same room for too long, but it is all about our passion for Council duties and serving the students. We are students first but we are here to serve and represent you the students as we “Innovate and sustain-the way forward; quality above quantity with service surmounting self”. We are a bonding family and are approachable for any issue. Better yet, on a “lite” note you can look around to find the following Council members Wolverine, Balloon, Johnny English, Nex Tap Maggel, Plankton, Jurassic Park, Pappa Smurf , Cyclops, “THE BOSS Mochomania”, and Rapunzel she can be found at the barn office at any given time if you call her cell phone and ask her location you can anticipate her answer “I'm at the barn office”, we even think that she lives there with her partners Mo Jo Jo Jo, Purple Touch and the infamous Kitty Written by: Dream Weekend
Student 1 I am a final year student and my Students’ Union experience was a very fulfilling one. I was a member of two committees namely: Academic Affairs and Finance. I worked mostly on the Finance committee planning parties and events such as tag drive and cheerleading. Working at the committee level made me very experienced gaining first hand time management, planning and events coordination which to my surprise enhanced my balance and performance with school. The Students’ Union is a good way to give back to the students and the school; it teaches you how to work and cope with different personalities as well as teamwork and enhance your university experience

Student 2 I am a 3rd year Pharmacy student and my Students’ Union experience came through financial assistance I am from a very poor family and has struggled to make it to this prestigious university, it is my aim to stay on top of my class and graduate with a first class degree and make my family proud. The students’ Union has been a savior to me on two occasions in my first year and second year second semester, I was hanging by the last thread to stay registered and the Students’ Union assisted me through bursaries that I applied for and for this I am grateful and would like to say thanks to the Students’ Union and continue the good work

Dear Counsellor, I cannot control myself, I am a second year pharmacy student who strongly believe that music controls me , whenever I go to parties I get out of control, music takes me to another place I cannot explain, I get out bad at parties and regret it the next day. I am a very good dancer and when I go out I am the center of attraction at every party I go where the next day after the party I can count on going online to see all suggestive dancing photos of me online in compromising positions. This has become a problem as my profession is a prestigious one and it is embarrassing for my fellow classmates and the profession at large, friends and family has expressed this to me, I really love dancing and music but I just cannot stop myself or keep a limit.
Counsellor J.B it is good that you reach out to share your issue with us I must say this is the first step, talking and sharing your issue with a friend or preferably a family member, there is always a friend or a family member that act as a confidant, talk to that person about it, just by talking this will loosen the issue also set short goals and work towards them in terms of academics such as a study plan or assignment task schedule, don't allow your work to pile up to add extra pressure also go out and have fun with friends and enjoy your university experience.
Counsellor S.D I wish you had mentioned if you drink a lot when you go to parties, however if you do that is the problem you need to stop drinking too much when you go out, also go out with good friends that can stop you from getting out of control or at least influence your actions. Use up your dance talents and create a hobby teach others to dance or join a dance club or group where you can use up your talents and express your love for music and dance.
Dear Counsellor, I am a third year student pursuing a major in Information Technology, from the ending of second year a series of family issues such as the separation of my mother and father among other things has been presenting themselves in my life, i tried blocking them out but i was unsuccessful, i am happy i was still able to pass all of my exams however, coming into third year i realize that i am still struggling with these issues and i am finding it very hard to concentrate, and focusing on my studies. I am very fearful that these series of family issues may hamper my grades in my final exams. I would like you to help me to identify a solution that i can use to combat this problem. (J.D.B

Making that Grade
Tips for Making that grade
Establish a system for homework assignments and studying, and you'll see better results with less hassle.
Stake out a good place to study. A quiet place with good lighting and no television is your best bet. Try to keep materials you need close by (dictionaries, paper, pencils). If there is no such thing as a quiet place in your home, the local library may be a good choice. Keep track of your assignments. Try using a loose-leaf notebook with sections for each class you take. When a teacher gives a homework assignment, write it down, along with any examples or special instructions. Think about study partners. If you can stay on track, you and your partners can keep each other motivated and give each other help solving problems, too. One caution: don't let someone else do your work for you. Be sure when you get help that you understand how to complete the work by yourself. No matter how much you have to do, there are still just 24 hours in a day. And, you've got to eat and sleep, not to mention hang out with your friends and family. So, until a magician somewhere pulls more hours out of his hat, you'll just have to juggle the time you have. Develop a plan of action. List what has to be done and how long you'll need to complete each item on your list.
Set a definite time for study. That means sticking to a routine and planning around the other things in your life like meals, chores, time with friends, and TV. Even when you don't have homework due, use the time for reading and reviewing.
