SUMMER 2022

UTHSC’S DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT A CAREER GUIDED BY A LOVE FOR SCIENCE, SURGERY AND EDUCATION Dr. Paul Huffstutter reflects on people and events that influenced his career in surgery and beyond.

Paxton V. Dickson, MD Dr. Paul Huffstutter, Class of 1978, has led a distinguished career as a surgeon, community and hospital leader, and innovator in medical education. It is fitting to have him as our first “alumni spotlight” for the UTHSC Department of Surgery’s Newsletter. When asked about what influenced him toward becoming a doctor, he recalls having many injuries as a young, active boy growing up on the family farm in Dyersburg, Tennessee. “It seemed like I was always getting cut and had to be sewed up or something had to be set,” Huffstutter said. “I became fairly good friends with the physicians that were having to sew me up.” He and his two brothers (who also became physicians) occasionally had to perform minor surgery on cattle and pigs they raised throughout their childhood and adolescence days. In addition, he developed a strong interest in science, having success in science fairs during his high school years. After graduating with a degree in Zoology from UT Martin in just three years, he enrolled in medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, where he also finished in three years.

Dr. Huffstutter and Dr. Lenoard Hines. (Photos/Paul Huffstutter).

In 1973, Dr. Huffstutter was a member of the last class of surgery residents hired by Dr. Harwell Wilson at the UTHSC. Just a few months after he began surgical training, Dr. James Pate became Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Dr. Louis Britt was in charge of general surgery. His fellow classmates from 1978, included Drs. Scott King, Douglas Hixson, Steve Flohr, Fedirico Florendo, and Ray Stahl Jr.

Although he spent his first year following graduation from residency as full-time teaching faculty at UTHSC, he ultimately felt a calling to serve a smaller community. He and his family moved to West Memphis, Arkansas where he spent 29 years in practice. During his time in West Memphis, Dr. Huffstutter managed a thriving, broad-based general and vascular surgery practice. He and his wife, Diane raised three children: Katherine, Paul Jr., and Elizabeth and became deeply integrated into the community. During his time in West Memphis, he served as the chief of surgery, chief of staff, and chairman of the credentials committee at Crittenden Memorial Hospital.

“It was a very strong class and I would let each one of them operate on me in a second,” he said. Dr. Huffstutter has fond recollection and appreciation for the surgical training he received at UTHSC. This was most evident after he was out in practice and his senior partners recognized and commented on his ability to handle difficult cases as a young surgeon.

In reflecting on his time as a busy surgeon and raising his family, he credits Diane for “being excellent at juggling all things and getting everybody to the right place at the right time, including me.” In 2008, Dr. Huffstutter retired from clinical practice as he and Diane decided to move to Knoxville, TN. Although he may have had plans of golf, fishing, travel, and gardening to occupy his retirement, a second career emerged. Shortly before moving to Knoxville, Dr. Huffstutter was at the annual meeting of the Southern Surgical Association and ended up in a conversation with Dr. Mitchell Goldman, the Chair of Surgery at UT Knoxville at the time, “I’ve got a job for you,” 10

SURGERY NEWS

SUMMER 2022

UTHSC’S DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT CONT. he said. Dr. Huffstutter replied, “I’m not really looking for a job.” However, one thing led to another and, along with Dr. Leonard Hines (Class of 1973), he was recruited to start a medical simulation center on campus in Knoxville. Admittedly, this was completely new territory for him, but something he embraced with enthusiasm. Under the codirectorship of Dr. Huffstutter and Dr. Hines, what began in about a 400 square-foot basement room has evolved into the UT Center for Advanced Medical Simulation (UTCAMS); a now 6,500 square-foot state-of-the-art facility providing students, residents, and healthcare professionals a unique educational experience. Dr. Huffstutter says one of the most enjoyable parts of this endeavor has been the learning process. “One of the amazing things is process of learning, you had time to understand the process of learning and how understanding that process can help you in everything in regard to teaching. I spent most of my time, not only helping to setup the simulation, but also applying learning principles in how simulations were written and how they were presented to our student learners.” UTCAMS is currently the only center in Tennessee and one of just 68 worldwide to have accreditation as a Level 1 Comprehensive Accredited Educational Institute (AEI) from the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Dr. Huffstutter credits having huge support from Dr. Goldman and administration at the UT Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville for helping the center become what it is today.

Dr. Huffstutter and wife, Diane on the golf course.

Dr. Huffstutter has long served his community and school. Even after relocating to Knoxville, he continued to volunteer with the Eighth Street Mission for Jesus Christ, an outreach program for the homeless in West Memphis, and remain active with the Families First Foundation and the Family Council of Arkansas. He has served on the UT College of Medicine Alumni Council and the UT Alumni Board of Governors. In 2016, he was recognized as the UTHSC College of Medicine Outstanding Alumnus. Since officially retiring a few years ago, he and Diane get to play lots of golf together, including some couples tournaments, which they enjoy with their friends. They also spend time working in the yard and he does some woodworking.

Dr. Huffstutter and family.

Anyone that spends time with or gets to know Dr. Huffstutter will realize that, although he has had a distinguished career, he is among the kindest and most humble gentleman you will find. Having him as a graduate of our residency program is a true credit to the UTHSC Department of Surgery.

UTHSC’S DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY FACULTY SPOTLIGHT BECKER EMBARKS ON NEXT CHAPTER Dr. Devra Becker joins as Professor and Division Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Peggy Reisser, Strategic Communications Manager

UTHSC) and increase the national footprint of the plastic surgery program,” Dr. Becker said. She also hopes to increase the diversity in the program.

Devra Becker, MD, joined the faculty of the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in late June because, for a plastic surgeon like herself, “Memphis has it all,” she said.

Dr. Becker grew up in Chicago. She received a bachelor’s degree in linguistics and cognitive science at Brandeis University and an MD degree at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. She is an MBA candidate at the University of Pittsburgh Katz School of Business, expected to graduate in 2023. Dr. Becker completed a general surgery residency at Barnes Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine, a craniofacial research fellowship at Washington School of Medicine/Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Imaging Laboratory, and a residency in plastic surgery at Barnes Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine. “As an undergraduate, I studied linguistics and cognitive science, but I loved the diagnostic and collaborative aspects of clinical medicine,” she said. “In medical school, I liked everything, but what I fell in love with about plastic surgery is the opportunity to solve complex problems with really smart people, both in plastic surgery and other specialties.”

Dr. Becker is the new chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Dr. Devra Becker. (Photo/Lauren Ickes). Department of Surgery at UTHSC. Previously, she was an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh in its Department of Plastic Surgery.

“What’s neat about plastic surgery is that we not only restore form and function, but we deal with the whole person,” she said. Dr. Becker said the scope of plastic surgery includes both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. “We do reconstructive surgery, and reconstructive surgery makes us better cosmetic surgeons, and cosmetic surgery makes us better reconstructive surgeons,” she said.

Dr. Becker said the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UTHSC “is positioned to become one of the preeminent plastic surgery programs in the country.” This is because it serves both a rural and an urban patient population and collaborates with prominent institutions, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Regional One Health, and Baptist Memorial Health Care. “For somebody who is committed not only to service, but to providing outstanding care with outstanding colleagues to a cross section of our society, Memphis is a dream come true,” Dr. Becker said. In Pittsburgh, Dr. Becker practiced at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she collaborated in delivering multidisciplinary care to patients often referred by their physicians because of issues related to certain cancers and spinal cord injuries, she said.

Dr. Becker was selected as a Plastic Surgery Foundation Visiting Professor for 2020-2022 and was the recipient of the American College of Surgeons/American Society of Plastic Surgeons Health Policy Scholarship for 2021. She has received numerous awards for her teaching and has been a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for the past 10
