FULL-TIME CLINICAL PHARMACY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES FACULTY 1
DEGREE PROGRAMS PharmD The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) is a professional doctorate degree, and the prerequisite for the licensing needed to practice the profession of pharmacy. It is a full-time, four-year course of study.
PharmD/PhD The PharmD Program is combined with PhD programs based in the College of Pharmacy and the College of Graduate Health Sciences to train qualified pharmaceutical scientists for careers in research-focused positions. Students accepted into the program may choose to pursue a PharmD degree, along with a PhD in either Health Outcomes and Policy Research or Pharmaceutical Sciences.
PharmD/MBA The UTHSC College of Pharmacy partners with the University of Memphis to offer a PharmD/MBA dual-degree program. Once the MBA program is completed, graduates are prepared for careers in management and leadership positions across the profession, from pharmacy ownership to institutional pharmacy management.
PharmD/MHIIM The PharmD program can be combined with the Masters in Health Informatics and Information Management (MHIIM) program based in the College of Health Professions. This degree prepares pharmacists to be leaders in electronic health management, where technologies and data are utilized in making complex healthcare decisions.
PharmD/MPH The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy and the University of Memphis School of Public Health have established a dual degree program that allows students to jointly earn the Doctor of Pharmacy degree and a Master of Public Health (MPH).
Certificate Programs While enrolled at the College, pharmacy students will earn three certificates as part of the degree program. Those certificates are the Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Certificate through APhA (American Pharmacists Association), the Medication Therapy Management Certificate through APhA and the Point of Care Testing Certificate through NACDS (National Association of Chain Drug Stores). These certificates will help prepare students to be on the forefront of the practice of pharmacy. The College also offers two optional certificate programs that can be completed while earning the PharmD degree, the Certificate in Health Informatics and Information Management in conjunction with the College of Health Professions and the Certificate in Nuclear Pharmacy.
STUDENT LIFE | COMMUNITY SERVICE The students at the UTHSC College of Pharmacy are committed to giving back to their communities in a variety of ways. With more than 80 student organizations on campus and 10 student organizations in the College, there are many ways for students to get involved. Students took part in over 200 events helping medically underserved populations in Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis. Over 40,000 patients were treated to services such as flu clinics, blood pressure screenings, pregnancy classes and medication counseling. Students have taken part in events to raise money and awareness such as the Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes, the FARE Food Allergy Heroes Walk and the Race for the Summitt to help Alzheimer’s disease research. They have also traveled abroad for mission trips and to participate in events such as the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation World Congress. Student Organizations: • • • • • • • • • •

STUDENT PHARMACIST CURRICULUM Being a student pharmacist in the UTHSC College of Pharmacy means having a unique and life-changing educational experience. As one of the few pharmacy programs in the country to have an innovative integrated curriculum model, whereby pharmacology and medicinal chemistry are taught within disease-state management courses, students receive enhanced understanding of drug action and therapeutics. Our P1 year begins with foundational courses, therapeutics modules, and introduction to clinical simulation and patient counseling, providing students with the knowledge and skills development experiences necessary to produce better practitioners. From the start, students will receive immunization training and have numerous opportunities to provide immunizations in the local community.
The P2 year continues to build clinical knowledge and paves the pathway for entering advanced experiential training early in each student’s education. Throughout the didactic portion of the curriculum, our students learn alongside other professional students such as medicine, physician assistants, nurses, and dentists to create pharmacists who value team based care. Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) begin during the P3 year, and continue through the fourth professional year. APPEs consist of month long rotations within clinical sites and under the supervision of a precepting pharmacist. Through these rotations, students become practice ready and develop a better understanding of the variety of clinical practice areas.
