EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: TYRONE CORDERO Congratulations goes out to Tyrone Cordero on being selected as Facilities Employee of the Month, June 2017 (pictured above with Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Kennard Brown, center, Emile J. David, associate vice chancellor, far right and Kenneth Bradshaw, director of facilities, left). Tyrone’s nomination detailed his above and beyond efforts recently during the Link building air conditioning capital project. He went out of his way to make sure that he met the needs of researchers in the Johnson and Wittenborg buildings. The air conditioning in the two buildings was off for the renovation and the temperatures were unseasonably hot to which we had many irate occupants who had to work in extremely hot buildings. Tyrone worked through his lunch and after his shift ended many times to satisfy the requests of the many researchers who were concerned about losing their animals and experiments. He was instrumental in installing the 60+ portable cooling units in the critical research areas. He monitored the areas and equipment closely each day to be sure there were no problems and on several occasions he corrected issues before they became problems. Tyrone is a very conscientious, friendly, and outgoing person that strives to do his best on every project he is assigned. Tyrone, thank you again for the excellent customer service each and every day.

SAFETY OFFICE TIPS - WATER, REST SHADE Scott Campbell - Office of Safety, Facilities Administration
HEAT ILLNESS CAN BE DEADLY. The body normally cools itself by sweating. During hot weather, especially with high humidity, sweating isn’t enough. Body temperature can rise to dangerous levels if you don’t drink enough water and rest in the shade. You can suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke. In 2014 alone, 2,630 workers suffered from heat illness and 18 died from heat stroke and related causes on the job. Heat illnesses and deaths are preventable. To prevent heat related illness and fatalities: • Drink water every 15 minutes, even if you’re not thirsty. • Rest in the shade to cool down, wear a hat and light-colored clothing. • Learn the signs of heat illness and what to do in an emergency. • Keep an eye on fellow co-workers. • “Easy does it” on your first days of work in the heat. You have to get used to it. • Working in full sunlight can increase heat index values by 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this in mind and plan additional precautions for working in these conditions. If a worker shows heat related illness symptoms, stop what you are doing and seek a cool area. Seek emergency help if symptoms do not improve. It’s important to reduce body heat to avoid heat stroke. SPOTLIGHT ON STANLEY TYLER Stanley Tyler, electrician, deserves the employee spotlight. Stanley showed dedication on a day in June after a big storm in Memphis that left thousands without power. He came to the campus on that Saturday to check the power to all campus buildings. Even though he’d lost power at his own home, he was focused on ensuring the campus had power. Great job Stanley, you continue to raise the bar of excellence!
