EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: SHAWN MILLER Congratulations to Shawn Miller on being selected as Facilities Employee of the Month, May 2017 (pictured above with Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Kennard Brown, far right, along with Emile J. David, associate vice chancellor, center and Kenneth Bradshaw, director of facilities, left). Shawn’s hard work and dedication led to a nomination and selection as our employee of the month winner. Shawn’s quick action when there was a bad power issue with the RBL building and the building power was repeatedly going on and off led to his nomination. He was asked to look into the situation and along with Memphis Light, Gas and Water, an Advance Electric engineer, a Square D technician, the generator service and RBL personnel all being called out, he stepped in and worked diligently to keep things moving to resolve the situation. Shawn even came up with a working theory of what went wrong. His knowledge and expertise was instrumental in getting this problem resolved quickly. Shawn has always had a good working knowledge of the generators and he put his knowledge into action for this particular crisis and does this for so many more to keep the campus up and running each day. Shawn thank you for your dedication and for giving better than your best each day!

Furniture has been ordered and the reception station will be changed out. Pictures of the progress are below. Looks good team!
Facilities painters have been busy lately with projects on campus. They’ve completed the Madison Garage as requested by Dr. Kennard Brown. ALL HANDS ON DECK BRINGS QUICK RESOLVE - GEB
WELCOME NEW EMPLOYEES:
A bad situation was averted recently when a contractor (working at GEB and set up on Monroe) had a drain blocked causing the water to flow into the basement of GEB. The HVAC crew was pulled off of their lunch and made it there quickly. They had the contractors clear plywood and 2X4’s so the water could flow down the street. The HVAC department, custodial crew, Will Johnson, building services supervisor and Whit Sutton, associate director of facilities, all worked diligently to assist in clean up. The quick reaction of Patrick Loggins, in mechanical services along with the custodial staff putting computers up, as well as other electrical items saved the equipment from water damage. This was an example of great teamwork efforts at a moments notice.

RETIRING SOON: SAFETY TIPS - FIRST AID Employers are required by OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.151 to have a person or persons adequately trained to render first aid for work-sites that are not in near proximity to an infirmary, clinic, or hospital. It is advised that the first aid program for a particular workplace be designed to reflect the known and anticipated risks of the specific work environment. Consultation with local emergency medical experts and providers of first-aid training is encouraged when developing a first-aid program. The program must comply with all applicable OSHA standards and regulations. OSHA requires certain employers to have CPR-trained rescuers on site. Sudden cardiac arrest is a potential risk at all work-sites, regardless of the type of work. Serious consideration should be given to establishing a workplace AED program. First-aid supplies must be available in adequate quantities and be readily accessible. First aid training courses should include instruction in general and workplace hazard-specific knowledge and skills. CPR training should incorporate AED training if an AED is available at the work-site. First aid training should be repeated periodically to maintain and update knowledge and skills. Management commitment and worker involvement is vital in developing, implementing and assessing a workplace first-aid program. If an employee is expected to render first aid as part of his or her job duties, the employee is covered by the requirements of the Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens standard (29 CFR 1910.1030). This standard includes specific training requirements. It is advisable for the employer to give a specific person the responsibility for choosing the types and amounts of firstaid supplies and for maintaining these supplies. The supplies must be adequate, should reflect the kinds of injuries that occur, and must be stored in an area where they are readily available for emergency access. An automated external defibrillator (AED) should be considered when selecting first-aid supplies and equipment. A specific example of the minimal contents of a workplace first aid kit is described in American National Standards Institute ANSI Z308.1 - 2003, Minimum Requirements for Workplace First Aid Kits. The kits described are suitable for small businesses. For large operations, employers should determine how many first-aid kits are needed, and if it is appropriate to augment the kits with additional first-aid equipment and supplies. Source: (2017).
