EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: VERDALE WALTERS Congratulations to Verdale Walters, Material Control Foreman in Facilities Administration on being selected as the Facilities Employee of the Month for February 2017.
Our Mission . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4
Edwin Jeffres
Verdale’s nomination specifically outlined his above and beyond work efforts and his dedication to going the extra mile countless times whenever needed. Emile David’s office was having an all-day meeting in February and Dale was recognized for stepping in to help out with numerous last minute request as needed. Each time he was called upon throughout the day he was diligent in accommodating one request after another. We were met with a dilemma when someone was needed to pick up the UT Chattanooga Executive Vice Chancellor from the airport to bring to our building for the all-day meeting. Dale was provided the details and location for pick up, which required driving to the Memphis International Airport from downtown. He accepted the task, without hesitation and when the meeting ended an hour early, he again stopped what he was doing to return him back to the airport for his flight on the UT plane. Dale also assisted with getting catered lunches to a 2nd floor conference room, and even insisted on helping with the set-up. With the busy demands of the day he stepped in again and again and never once complained. Dale shows true dedication in accommodating any request, from being called upon for quick turnaround for hard hats and vest, to assembly of the items and delivery across the campus. He truly defines great customer service and is an absolute team player!

Thank you Dale for a job well done!

FACILITIES TEAMWORK IN ACTION DURING A BUSY FEW MONTHS ON CAMPUS
Two projects in the 920 Madison Building are wrapping up to completion after remodeling. The projects included new carpet for areas in the College of Medicine and College of Nursing. David Wade and his crew worked on installing carpet for the two projects. Mary Hollis and Renardo Cunningham worked on both projects along with Michael Stone painting the area at College of Medicine, 9th floor and Strachn Charlton painting the area at the College of Nursing, 10th floor.
All Hands on Deck - take a look below!
Awesome job team!
There were all hands on deck when Mechanical Services received a call on a Wednesday in February. The call was about a flood on the second floor of the Wittenborg building. A fitting on a heating hot water line above the ceiling blew apart flooding the second floor and portions of the area below it (on the first floor). Thanks to the quick response of Mechanical Services personnel, the flood was contained and damage was minimized. Multiple crafts were involved including Custodial, HVAC, Electrical, Safety personnel and Management. Another project was the the installation of a temporary air conditioning system on the east side of Dunn Dental due to damaged cooling coils in the air-handling unit that must be replaced. Also, the replacement of the old heating and cooling system for the S.A.C. swimming pool and a complete lighting upgrade in the G.E.B. student areas done by Electrical Department. Not to mention, when the 910 Madison building was closed due to heating issues and the maintenance/boiler personnel worked with contractors to pull the tube bundle, repair, and reinstall in record time! Within 24 hours, ten stories were heated up and re-opened for business. It’s been a busy few months and even with departments short staffed and others stepping up, teams worked diligently to keep the UTHSC campus up and running. A shining example of great team work.

SAFETY TIPS
Ladder Safety
Ladder Safety is extremely important in the work place. Studies with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), show that ladder falls account for approximately 43% of workplace fatalities concerning falls in general. Approximately 20% of occupational fall injuries are related to ladders, and 80% of construction fall injuries. Incorrect usage is the number one cause of ladder injuries. Ladder injuries generally increase with work age, but all of these incidents can be reduced if employers and employees ensure safe practices including appropriate training, ladders selection, and safer alternatives such as scaffolds. Proper ladder height selection in conjunction with work height, duty rating work load, ladder inspections, proper setup and stability, and never using the top step are prime mitigation safeguards to prevent you from hurting yourself while using a ladder. IF you do fall from a ladder: Determine if you are hurt, GET UP SLOWLY if you can do so. If you are not injured, rest briefly and regain your composure. Determine what caused the fall, and ensure all safety procedures are met before attempting to climb the ladder again. If you are injured – do not panic. Don’t get up if you feel you cannot. Call out for assistance, or dial 911 if serious. For general procedures on how to be safe when using ladders, go to: https://www.osha.gov/Publications/portable_ladder_qc.html

Employee trainings on performance reviews were held February 7, and Feb 13-15. The trainings covered supervisor roles for the performance review process as well as employee focused training to ensure everyone understands the review process. Facilities has a large organization (over 200 employees) and extra effort is required to ensure every employee receives the required training. Damon did an outstanding job of covering the employee’s various shift times and we extend our thanks for the time and effort to accommodate our organization!
