AWARDS FROM DR. KENNARD BROWN March 2019

Facilities custodial employees had a busy few weeks of on the spot awards from Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Kennard Brown during the month of March.

Terri Whitelow, senior custodian, was recognized for her efforts and support to our community. She took the time to guide a patient who was lost, to their correct building for an appointment in the Madison Plaza. Also, during an all facilities staff meeting, Dr. Brown surprised the entire GEB custodial staff including their supervisor, with individual awards. He personally thanked them for their outstanding work and indicated he’d received positive feedback about the great job they’re doing in the GEB building. Spot bonus awards were presented to each member of the team. Our employees are our most valuable asset and deserve recognition for the great job they do. Keep up the great work team!

CAMPUS PROJECTS, EMPLOYEES AND EVENTS COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

CAMPUS OIL SPILL ON MONROE

Renovation in the College of Medicine, 920 Madison, suite 901 is complete and all furniture has been installed. They are all ready to move into their new space shown below.

An environmental emergency was prevented by the quick action of the Facilities HVAC and Safety departments. About 15 gallons of hydraulic fluid from repair work on Monroe Ave. was accidentally released into a storm water catch pump well. The pump activated and pumped water and hydraulic fluid onto Monroe, which rapidly flowed down the street toward a storm drain. Brent Stiles, PM supervisor, noticed it and quickly reported the situation to campus safety officer Scott Campbell. Scott immediately took action, coordinating with Brent and facilities personnel to stop the flow from reaching storm water drains. Employees Henry Buchanan and Jackson Burns responded with absorbent socks and oil dry to contain the oil spill until the safety environmental clean up team arrived. Sharon Anderson with Environmental Safety, came to assist with the help of Research Safety to deliver spill containment materials and barrels to help with the cleanup efforts. This quick thinking and response prevented the oil spill from getting into the storm drain system and prevented an environmental emergency, federally regulated EPA, and Shelby County and City of Memphis violations. An environmental emergency like this is a sudden threat to the public health or the well-being of the environment, arising from the release or potential release of certain substances such as oil.

The demolition phase for this project is nearing completion and with all the new changes inside of these old buildings, you may not recognize them now. The old Mooney library is now slated to become an administrative area and the glass floored stacks were removed. There is still some demolition left to remove the third story concrete slab leftover from the stack removal and the detail woodwork and the grand fireplace remain. The facilities team along with Memphis, Light Gas & Water (MLGW) and Flintco construction company toured the Crowe, Mooney, Nash and Nash Annex in March to begin construction to supply electrical services to the four buildings. CAMPUS SAFETY - STAIRWAYS

Scott Campbell, Campus Safety Officer This article may seem basic, as we all use stairs on a daily basis. You may be unaware that slips, trips, and falls happen every day on stairways and over 1 million injuries occur each year as a result. Accidents in the stairways constitute the second leading cause of accidental injury, second only to motor vehicle accidents (National Safety Council Data).

The majority of stairway workplace incidents occur when an employee is not paying attention. Common causes can be technology use, rushing and not watching footing, as well as obstructions to name a few. All employees should take the following precautions when using stairways: • ALWAYS use handrails when ascending or descending stairs.

• Never carry a load with both hands when using stairs.

• Be cautious of environmental conditions such as ice, snow, or rain accumulation that may build up on outdoor steps.

• Only take one step at a time when ascending or descending stairs.

Actively using handrails can actually prevent a large percentage of situations where otherwise someone would fall. Don’t assume you’ll be able to grab a handrail fast enough when falling to prevent injury. Be watchful and report if stairs are wet (spills, snow, etc), have trash, handrails are loose or have defects. If you don’t, someone may very well have a slip, trip or fall due to the conditions that you may have noticed – but did not report.

CONSTRUCTION DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT

Michael Nelson and Ronnie Coburn, Construction and Carpenter Shop Supervisors Construction department supervisors Michael Nelson and Ronnie Coburn want to commended their team and extend a huge thank you to each team member for doing a great job on a daily basis here on campus. This team is comprised of carpenters, Sr. Gen. Skill craftsmen, our facilities locksmith and a doors specialist. Their responsibilities include: Carpentry, building of walls, ceilings and doorways; sheet rock installation and finishing; door and closet maintenance, which includes wall repair, maintenance or renovation; installing wood, carpet or vinyl flooring and cabinets, counter tops and desktop workstation/furniture assembly. General duties also include hanging pictures, instructional boards, ceiling maintenance and installation of various devices and appliances such as paper towel dispensers, etc.

On a given day, this team has between 20-25 work tickets to complete. They work together ensure all work is finished in a timely manner. They are one of the busiest on campus and no doubt deserves recognition. KEY AND LOCK CONTROL MANAGEMENT Key and lock control management is under Facilities Administration. If you need to turn in, transfer, have new keys issued, or have locksmithing needs do the following: 1) Complete a request form found on the facilities website under the key control tab (https://www.uthsc.edu/ facilities/key-control.php).

2) Attach the form to an Archibus work order request (link found at the bottom of each page of Facilities website).

We are located in the Physical Plant Building (room 224). Office hours are 7:45 am – 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday. For further assistance, please call 901.448.4001.

You can now download the Requestor Training Powerpoint presentation from the facilities web page, www.uthsc.edu/facilities. Under the Facilities Administration link, click on the Archibus Training link. From there, you will view a download link for “Archibus Requestor Training” in the “Customer Guides” section. When you click on this link, it will provide the ability to download the Powerpoint to your computer. Once downloaded, open the Powerpoint, click “slide show” and then click “From Beginning”. This will launch the Powerpoint, with narration, to allow you to view and hear the instructions for entering a request.

After viewing this information, you can send an email to, archibus@uthsc.edu, to obtain access to the system.

There are other PDFs on the training site that will provide instruction on various other aspects of the system, however, this Powerpoint is strictly for entering request(s) into the system.
