The custodial department recently had their annual training and certification program. The event included a lunch and learn as part of the final day of training. It was comprised of various vendors we currently do business with, showcasing new equipment, products and supplies. Pictures below are from the event attended by Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Kennard Brown, Emile David, associate vice chancellor, and Kimberly Moore, director of Facilities Business Office along with facilities custodial employees.
FACILITIES ENERGY SERVICES Whit Sutton, Energy Manager
The energy used to run elevators goes largely ignored when it comes to energy management. Choosing not to use the elevator in certain situations can save energy and yield other benefits. From an energy management standpoint, elevators use a huge amount of energy to go up or down one floor. The sudden electrical demand or surge of electricity it takes to start the lift motor, adds to our demand charges. One floor operation requires a button push, switches and contractors to actuate to get the elevator motor going to your floor. Both sets of doors have to open, both sets of doors have to close and another button push that causes the elevator to move you, the elevator car and the counterweight in cable systems. The car arrives on its mission to your floor and then we recycle both sets of doors again. Finally, the elevator may go to a “parked position” awaiting its next customer. You can see it takes a lot of mechanical action to move a person 10 feet vertically and since we are a health science center, we want to mention the health benefits of walking steps. • Climbing just eight flights of stairs a day lowers your early mortality risk by 33 percent. • Seven minutes of stair climbing can half the risk of a heart attack over 10 years. • Just two minutes of extra stair climbing a day is enough to stop average middle age weight gain. Making the choice to take the stairs occasionally can have many benefits to you personally but also saves energy and cuts carbon emissions. Next time you are faced with the decision to ride the elevator one or two flights, push yourself, not the button! CONGRATULATIONS WILLIE EARL MCKINNIE, LOGISTICS FOREMAN, ON BEING SELECTED AS A FINALIST FOR THE 2018 LICHTERMAN AWARD!

Dunn Dental Team Celebration
Custodial supervisors Cedric Woodson, Shirley Sullivan, Will Johnson and Tamika Cox (not pictured), attended a floor care roadshow presented by Advance and SC Johnson Professionals this past month. The event was an open demonstration showcasing new “state of the art” floor equipment along with modern technology chemical cleaning options for our campus facilities.
The custodial team is all about celebrating their team. Ursela Howell shared how they continue to spotlight the team and this time it included a boss’s day celebration for supervisor Tameka Cox and foremen, Ursela Howell and Maurice Ware.
