LAURA MOONEY, PROJECT MANAGER

A new Mind Body Wellness Center, under the leadership of Kimberlee Strome, Director, will be opening soon on the third floor in the Student Alumni Center (SAC). The space is currently undergoing renovation. It will include a fully equipped studio for yoga, a Pilates studio, a meditation studio, and office space. With Campus Recreation and Power Life Smoothies and Eats already in the SAC, this will be the ultimate all-in-one place to work on getting and staying healthy. The project will consist of renovating an existing student area with new ceilings, tiles, and grids, as well as new flooring, window treatments, paint, furniture and of course, new fitness equipment. Facilities’ HVAC, electrical, carpenters, painters and custodial services, and the IT department are all working together on the project set to open soon. Great job team! Stay tuned . . . .

CAMPUS PROJECTS/DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT EMPLOYEE SERVICE RECOGNITION

Thank you to all of our employees who are celebrating their 10, 15, and 20 years of service with UTHSC this year! Facilities’ employees are among those honored during the ceremony held recently to recognize them for their loyalty, commitment and years of service. Congratulations to facilities employees (included in the picture below) for their many years of dedication and service:

Renovation is complete on the 6th floor of 930 Madison, for the College of Health Professions. Marcus Mayes is pictured installing metal studs for a new wall to create a new office and in another area a wall was built creating two new offices. Another wall was removed, creating an office for a department dean. Facilities HVAC, electricians and carpenters, along with IT, all worked on the project.

ARCHIBUS SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS Lacy Scott The current state of Archibus is evolving. The Archibus Building Operations Console was implemented in November 2016. Since that time, it has transitioned from Space Planning to the Facilities department. In 2018, Archibus went through the LEAN process to assist with system improvements. Out of this process, other LEAN teams were created to assess the issues with vendor controls and central supply. The LEAN process aided in finding various “pain points” within the procedure that we are responding to by assessing the current version with our vendor through GAP analysis, and preparing to upgrade to the newer version, 24.1. We are working to improve the problem types to make the choices easier for users when inputting a campus work request. We are also working with the facilities crafts to better understand their system needs to assist them better and we still provide training for the teams in using Archibus. SOLAR POWER- CASE FOR OR AGAINST Whit Sutton, Energy Manager

Solar power has some real advantages and some real disadvantages in its deployment. Recent developments seem to tip the case towards solar use and a positive return on investment but there have been some unforeseen negative aspects that may deter or even eliminate solar power as a viable option. Let’s review some of the case for solar power: • Marginal cost of power generation is zero. Once equipment is payed for, power is virtually free from there. • Insurance for future rising energy cost. • Solar is renewable because the sun will be around for about 6.5 billion years. • Environmentally friendly. • Widely available geographically. • Reduces electricity cost through net metering. • Community solar options in some areas. • Little maintenance. • Government support for installations through grants and tax credits. • Cost are going down/technology is improving. Now, the case against solar: • High initial investment and without government support solar is a hard sell. • Solar is an intermittent energy source - it will not work during dark periods. • Energy storage is expensive. • Some manufacturing processes for the solar panels cause pollution. • Panels contain exotic materials that are subject to tariffs. • Requires lots of space - usually the maximum is 170 watts per square meter. • Once installed they are fixed - you can move but you can’t take solar panels with you. As you can see, the decisions to add solar power to a power portfolio is complex. Calculations using electrical consumption cost and use, demand cost, solar capital expenses, future utility projections, future value of money, product life-cycle, product efficiency, maintenance cost, and available grants or incentives, will help to determine if solar power is a viable option.

Giovanna Reed, Asst. Custodial Foreman and Curtis Peterson, Sr. Custodian Andrea Kolen, Director of Space Planning, reached out to facilities management because she wanted to recognize Curtis Peterson and Giovanna Reed (pictured below) from the custodial department in the facilities newsletter. Here is what she had to say: “Recently the Office of Space Planning relocated the Plough Center employees, Campus Police, and Parking Services to the Van Vleet Building. The move was well planned and executed almost seamlessly due in part to facilities employees like Reed and Peterson, who consistently maintain a pristine work environment for employees and customers who enter the building. Giovanna consistently takes great pride in keeping the building clean and would notify Andrea and/or her supervisor when there are areas which require special attention. Her continued professionalism, respect, responsiveness, reliability and accountability are all characteristics of a good employee with great work ethics. Curtis stepped in and assisted her by responding to areas which needed attention even before being directed by his supervisor in order to maintain a wholesome environment while people were relocating. His attentiveness to the needs of the new occupants were expeditiously carried forward, which allowed our office to focus on the critical details. The cleanliness of the work environment was well noted by those who reside and work in the building daily.” Job well done Curtis and Giovanna!

NEWS YOU CAN USE... KEY AND LOCK CONTROL MANAGEMENT Key and lock control management is under Facilities Administration. If you need to turn in, transfer, have new keys issued, or have locksmithing needs do the following: 1) Complete a request form found on the facilities website under the key control tab (https://www.uthsc. edu/facilities/key-control.php). 2) Attach the form to an Archibus work order request (link found at the bottom of each page of Facilities website) and bring to Facilities. We are located in the Physical Plant Building, room 224. Office hours are 8:00 - 11:30 am and 1:00 - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Tate Conrad, AIA, has been named director of Planning and Design for Facilities at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. In his role, Conrad works in conjunction with the UTHSC Office of Capital Projects, which includes the Division of Facilities Planning and the Office of Real Property, assisting with real property transactions and in the design and construction of capital projects to meet the administrative, research, academic, and educational program requirements of UTHSC. He is housed in the Facilities Department. “I am grateful to be back in my hometown serving the community and the university,” Conrad said.” I look forward to contributing toward the vision for the current and future UTHSC Campus Master Plan.” Conrad received his Bachelor of Environmental Design and Master of Architecture from the University of Colorado. He is accredited by and involved with both the American Institute of Architects and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
