NEW YEAR ENERGY CONSERVATION TIPS Whit Sutton, Energy Manager
As the new year and new decade begins, it’s a good time for Facilities Administration to share some energy conservation tips that will help save the University money. Here are three small things you can actively do to help. Turn off lights when leaving for the day, lunch or any extended period of time. Many of our buildings have automated controls that will do this for you. In most cases, if you have this type of lighting controls, there is no need to turn off lighting, it will be done for you. If your office lights are on when you leave for the day and off when you return in the morning, more than likely a building automation device is controlling your lighting. Turn your computer off when out of the office for extended periods of time and be sure it is set to power saving/sleep mode. Computers and monitors are huge energy consumers. These devices remain on and in a lot of cases unused for a good part of the day. Setting the operating system to automatically go into power saving mode is the safest and easiest way to help with power saving. If you need guidance call the UTHSC help desk and they can lhelp you with the process of setting the power saving mode. Think about those space heaters.
PERFORMANCE REVIEW CYCLE The HR Reporter
It’s that time of year again! The 2019 performance review cycle for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center employees will close on Wednesday, March 31, 2020. Performance evaluations are required for all regular staff exempt and non-exempt employees that completed their probation period prior to December 31, 2019. Performance evaluations/reviews are designed to ensure employees receive a fair assessment of their job performance (outcomes and behavior). During the annual performance review, the supervisor and employee should discuss the employee’s performance during the previous calendar year, job duties, performance expectations, any specific objectives to be achieved and professional development goals for the employee. Please visit uthsc.edu/hr/training/index.php to view upcoming employee and supervisor performance evaluation training dates.
Space heaters, unfortunately, are a necessary evil in some places. Due to the complexity of our buildings there are certain areas that are best served temporarily by using a space heater. These heaters are only provided by facilities with authorization to use when an area is identified as being suitable for its use. These heaters can be fire hazards. Also, dressing appropriately for the environment can eliminate or greatly reduce the use of space heaters and will also help to save money. Please be sure to turn all space heaters off when not in use. We will be issuing energy tips from time to time so please watch this portion of our newsletter for future information.
ASK HUMAN RESOURCES The HR Reporter
Q: What are the requirements to receive compensation for the Holidays? A: According to policy HR0350: Employees who work or who are in active pay status all available workdays in their scheduled work week receive compensation for all holidays in the work week. Active status also means use of annual or sick leave. Please refer to the UT Systems Policies for additional information on this and other policies.
COLEMAN PODS AND LINK TUNNEL PROJECT
CELEBRATION TIME!
Project updates (below) are underway for two campus projects.
WELCOME NEW EMPLOYEES
Jon Rawlinson, Engineer Laura Mooney, Project Manager
Coleman Cold Pod/Warm Pod: Phase II is finished and was a complete success. The sound has been reduced considerably. A ductwork system with internal sound dampening liner was developed that bounced the air around several times, lowering the air volume each time before it eventually left the ductwork and entered the pod. The ductwork had to be thin, and hug the ceiling and walls, so that the mouse cages could fit inside and the experiments could be performed. The researcher was pleased that the outcome of the design which exceeded the calculated estimates. Link Tunnel: The heat coming from the underground mechanical room is overwhelming, especially during the summer months. An exhaust fan system was sized and designed by Engineer, Jon Rawlinson and HVAC Supervisor, Jesse Johnson, to remove that heat, carry it up the side of the building, and dump it into the atmosphere high enough that it would not affect anyone at ground level. The driller finished boring through several feet of dirt and two levels of concrete. A fan was put in place and ready to go and as soon as the electrical department connects to it and turns it on, the tunnel will be much more comfortable. Travelers through the tunnel will breathe fresher air as they use it. A huge thank you to all of the Facilities crafts working on this project!

NEWS YOU CAN USE... KEY AND LOCK CONTROL MANAGEMENT
UTHSC HEALTHFUL COOKING CLASSES FOR FACULTY AND STAFF
Key and lock control management is under Facilities Administration. If you need to turn in, transfer, have new keys issued, or have locksmithing needs do the following:
The College of Medicine is happy to announce they will be offering a series of six hands-on Culinary Medicine classes open to faculty and staff beginning in 2020. Two classes (Feb. 10 and March 23) are already underway. As soon as the classes were announced to the campus, they filled up quickly.
1) Complete a request form found on the facilities website under the key control tab (https://www. uthsc.edu/facilities/key-control. php). 2) Attach the form to an Archibus work order request (link found at the bottom of each page of Facilities website) and bring to Facilities. We are located in the Physical Plant Building, room 224. Office hours are 8:00 - 11:30 am and 1:00 - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. For further assistance please call 901.448.5507.
SUSAN WARNER, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor, Medical Education, College of Medicine
The classes will be held in the Student-Alumni Center kitchen, 800 Madison Avenue. Cooking teams will be working with chefs, a faculty chef-MD, and medical students trained in Culinary Medicine to learn how to plan and prepare delicious and budget-friendly food that is good for you. The primary focus is to define evidenced-based “healthful eating” and to develop your culinary skills, whether you are a beginner or a home gourmet. Each class runs about two hours, includes approximately 60-75 minutes of cooking, and ends with sharing the meal prepared. During the meal, we will discuss key concepts of nutrition in real food terms. There are six classes in each series. The classes are FREE, but we ask that you commit to the six-class series, hopefully attending at least 75 percent of the classes scheduled. We hope you will join us to start on the path where “Health Meets Food™!” Watch for future classes that will be announced, get on a waiting list, or indicate interest in future classes at https://uthsc.edu/culinary-medicine. Space will be limited so sign up quickly after you see the announcement for the next series of class in the daily digest for faculty, staff and students. For more information, contact Susan W. Warner, MD, CCMS, email: swarne13@ uthsc.edu
