Dr. Francis Hammond Cole Jr. passed away on November 27, 2022. The department is saddened by his passing but deeply thankful for the contributions he made over a long and distinguished career as a thoracic surgeon. He greatly influenced the education and careers of many who trained and practiced in Memphis, serving as faculty at UTHSC for nearly five decades.

Dr. Cole was born and raised in Memphis and was a graduate of Memphis University School. He attended college at Vanderbilt University, where he met his wife Kay who attended Peabody College. He then returned to Memphis to complete medical school and residency. For several years, Dr. Cole had the unique experience of getting to practice with his father, Francis Cole Sr.

In addition to being an outstanding clinician, surgeon and educator, Dr. Cole was a veteran of the United States Navy and spent several years in the Naval Reserves. He was a member of the University Club of Memphis, a past president of the Memphis-Shelby County Medical Society, a past delegate for the Tennessee Medical Association and a member of the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society.
