Welcome to the Summer/Fall 2023 edition of UTHSC Surgery News.

The past academic year concluded with the usual flurry of activity and included a spectacular celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society in conjunction with our annual UTHSC Department of Surgery Research Day and Graduation/ Awards Banquet. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Julie Freischlag, immediate past president of the American College of Surgeons, helped to kick off the daylong events during which we acknowledged the extraordinary achievements of our faculty, fellows, residents and students. Most importantly, we honored our outstanding group of nine graduating chief residents. Additional details are included herein.

As we bid farewell to our graduating chief residents, the circle of training continues on as we warmly welcome yet another superb class of incoming interns. Thank you to Dr. Alexander Feliz, Program Director for hosting our annual new residents’ welcome picnic at his home in June. This issue’s Faculty Spotlight introduces us to Dr. Robin Evans, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a highly accomplished craniofacial surgeon and one of our newest faculty members. In addition, Dr. Mahim Malik (Class of 2014), a national leader in Congenital Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, is featured in the current Alumni Spotlight. I would once again like to express my gratitude to all of you for your tireless and outstanding contributions to the Department of Surgery. She has worked on a research collaboration with Ospital Ng Maynila Medical Center, Philippines and will present the results in September at the annual meeting of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons in Baltimore, MD.

UTHSC WELCOMES AFRICAN JOURNALISTS INTERESTED IN US HEALTHCARE

In July, the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Press Centers sponsored a media tour for African journalists. The journalists participated in a two-day visit to UTHSC to gain further insight into healthcare in the United States.

SURGICAL MISSION UPDATE: CARMONA, CAVITE, PHILIPPINES

Nia Zalamea, MD, Olivia DeLozier, MD, Martin Fleming, MD and general surgery residents Aubrey Schachter, MD (PGY4), Michael Wright, MD (PGY4) and Clarisse Muenyi, MD (Graduated PYG5) were apart of a 30person team that traveled to Carmona, Cavite, Philippines from February 18-25, 2023. Partnering with the local organization, Memphis Mission of Mercy (MMM), the team provided surgical services including thyroidectomy, hernia repair, cleft lip and palate repairs.

The combined medical and surgical mission returned to operation after a hiatus resulting from the global health pandemic. Zalamea reported that 88 successful surgeries were performed, noting that many patients had been waiting for operations since the last mission to the area in 2018, while other new patients were found to have been in wait for decades.

HERBERT SHAINBERG SCHOLARS 2024

The UTHSC Global Surgery Institute’s Herbert Shainberg Scholars Multicultural Health Exchange Program with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev will begin in Spring 2024 (March 17-April 12). The program provides two students with the unique opportunity and the funding to travel to Ben-Gurion University of the Negev for a single four-week rotation, or (2) two-week rotations. In addition, the students will have the opportunity to participate in the university’s extensive multicultural health and global health programming. Scholars will be announced September 18.

GLOBAL SURGERY TEXT PUBLISHED

Nia Zalamea, MD, Assistant Professor, Division of General Surgery, Director UTHSC Global Surgery Institute, authored a chapter in the Springer publication of Global Surgery entitled, “How to Work and Teach in Low-and Middle-Income Countries.” The creation of the textbook was a two-year process and reflects the multinational, multi-institutional and current issues in the realm of Global Surgery.

“The impact the mission has on the patients’ lives is tremendous,” Zalamea said. “As a team we only have a brief window of time to understand the impact of our work, but know that by removing the barriers to needed surgical care, we are offering their families a chance to move forward with their lives.”

One of the highlights of the mission was the proclamation of the City of Carmona designating Pagamutang Bayan Ng Carmona as the new home of the Memphis Mission of Mercy in the Philippines. This will now serve as the annual long term mission location for MMM and the UTHSC Global Surgery Institute.

UTHSC’S DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

A HEART FOR HOME

Paxton V. Dickson, MD

Dr. Mahim Malik, Class of 2014, was born and raised in the city of Lahore in northeast Pakistan. She grew up as the middle of three children, with an older sister and younger brother. In Pakistan, students are required to begin choosing a professional track towards the end of high school. Mahim says she was a bit torn between a career in business versus math and science. She had no physicians in her family and says that her parents actually had concerns about her pursuing a career in medicine because of the heavy workload involved and that it would require her studying farther from home. After trying a semester in business school, she felt a persistent draw toward medicine and was accepted to the prestigious Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. There she obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. When starting her third year of medical school, she had an elective rotation in cardiothoracic surgery and the first time she scrubbed a CABG, she knew she had found her calling. Knowing she would likely pursue residency training in the U.S., she completed all three USMLE Step assessments while she was in medical school. While many from her medical school class have settled outside of Pakistan, Mahim’s plan was always to return to her home country.

Mahim moved to the U.S. in 2009 when she matched into a preliminary general surgery position at UTHSC. She excelled during this year and was awarded a categorical PGY2 position the following year. She credits being able to prove her work ethic on the transplant surgery service as a preliminary intern and the transplant surgery team advocating for her obtaining a categorical spot. She also recalls that her most influential mentors in residency were those that pushed her beyond her comfort zone, because it helped her realize her potential as a surgeon. Following her training in Memphis, Mahim completed a two-year cardiothoracic surgery residency at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. During her time in Columbus, she was influenced by Dr. Mark Galantowitz at Nationwide Children’s Hospital to pursue additional training in congenital cardiac surgery. Knowing that she planned to return to Pakistan, where at the time there were only four formally trained congenital cardiac surgeons in the entire country, she felt this was the right path for her. Mahim completed her fellowship in congenital cardiac surgery at the University of Washington, Seattle Children’s Hospital in 2017.

After finishing her training, Mahim stuck to her plan and

returned to Pakistan where her first position was as faculty at her home medical school, Aga Khan University, in Karachi. She remembers that even though she was coming home, there was an initial culture shock after spending so much of her medical training in the U.S. Even for a fairly advanced medical center by Pakistani standards, the resources at her center remained limited compared to what she was accustomed to in the U.S. She spent her first four years of practice in Karachi and then had the opportunity to move Islamabad, which was closer to family for both her and her husband. Since 2021, she has been leading the congenital cardiac surgery program at the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology in Rawalpindi. This move has put her in a position to provide care to a socioeconomically disparate population within Pakistan. Because about 40% of the population in Pakistan is below the poverty line and there is not a national health insurance system, this work presents unique challenges. For instance, many of the congenital defects that would be repaired during infancy for children in the U.S. or Europe are not corrected until adolescence because of delays in diagnosis. Seeing a teenager with clubbed fingers from long-standing cyanosis is not unusual in her practice. Mahim is a staunch advocate for gender equity in surgery and is a founding member of Association of Women Surgeons of Pakistan (AWSP), a newly formed organization of likeminded surgeons working to address the gender disparities in surgical fields.

Mahim met her husband, Sohail when she was in college. At that time, he was working in Dubai and Pakistan. For years they maintained a cross-continental relationship as she pursued her surgical training in the U. S. Although only able to see each other a few times a year, their relationship remained strong. They were able to be married during March of her chief residency year in 2014, however, continued to live

apart as she finished fellowship training in the U.S. and he had work obligations at home. Mahim gives Sohail credit for patiently and lovingly supporting her as she pursued her dream to become a cardiovascular surgeon. “He has sat through every graduation and ceremony from medical school, residency, and two fellowships.” Together, they have two sons, Shehryar (6) and Alivar (2).

Outside of work, Mahim and Sohail stay busy with their boys. She is an avid jogger and likes to read and cook. She says that she is currently on a “homemade ice cream kick.” The family also enjoys spending time in the Margalla Hills, on the northern ridge of Islamabad. Mahim keeps in touch with her UTHSC Class of 2014 through group text and regards her classmates as dear friends. Over the years, they have kept up with each other’s families and careers and she is thankful to be part of such a great group. The UTHSC Department of Surgery is very fortunate to have Mahim as an alumnus and extremely proud of the woman and surgeon she has become.

TRANSPLANTATION RAVI MOHANKA, MD

Dr. Mohanka will join the UTHSC Department of Surgery as Professor in the Division of Transplantation. He performed India’s first successful intestinal transplantation and specializes in both living and cadaveric liver transplantation. Dr. Mohahka graduated from Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, India and completed a research fellowship in transplant surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital in NY and an ASTS fellowship in abdominal organ transplantation at Thomas E. Startz Transplantation Institute in Pittsburgh.

TRANSPLANTATION RASHMI SETH, MD

NEW FACULTY TRANSPLANTATION

ADAM CERISE, MD

Dr. Adam Cerise will join the UTHSC Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Transplantation. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of Notre Dame and subsequently received his medical degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport. He completed his internship and residency in general surgery at Indiana University, which included a two-year research stint at the National Institute of Health. He is board certified in general surgery and recently completed an additional two-year fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Seth will join the UTHSC Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Transplantation. She graduated with her medical degree and completed general surgery training from the University of Ottawa. She was a clinical fellow in HPB Oncology and Liver transplantation at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in England. She is a member of the American Society of Transplantation, American Society of Transplant Surgeons as well as the American and International Hepatopancreatobiliary Association. Dr. Seth was the Associate Program Director of the Hepatobiliary fellowship program at University Hospitals Cleveland.

Dr. Solsky will join the UTHSC Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology. He graduated from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University and then completed a general surgery residency at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY and a complex general surgical oncology fellowship at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in WinstonSalem, NC. Dr. Solsky will lead the HIPEC program.

Making a difference in the lives of children remains the focal point for Robin Evans, MD, FACS, FRCSC.

The pediatric plastic surgeon at Le Bonheur and Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, has been named Co-Director of the Craniofacial and Cleft program at Le Bonheur. Dr. Evans will serve alongside Le Bonheur and UTHSC Division Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery and Associate Professor Paul Klimo, MD.

Le Bonheur’s comprehensive Craniofacial and Cleft Program specializes in advanced treatment options for children with severe congenital facial and skull malformations. Currently, Le Bonheur performs more than 40 large craniofacial surgeries annually – the majority of which serve patients between the ages of 6 to 12 months old.

In his new role, Evans hopes to build upon Le Bonheur’s foundational commitment to clinical excellence and patient and family-centered care, strengthening the hospital’s already robust Craniofacial and Cleft Program.

“Our shared vision for the program is a reimagined, holistic approach to craniofacial care,” said Evans. “People deserve to feel genuinely cared for and to have health care providers who can see things from the perspective of the kids and families we serve. By collaborating with multiple specialties to create a truly multidisciplinary clinic environment, we can offer patients a full range of services in one appointment and bring the very best of each specialty to the forefront.”

A native of Canada, Dr. Evans obtained an undergraduate degree in Psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario. He enrolled in medical school at McMaster University in Ontario. After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from McMaster, Dr. Evans completed a residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at University of Ontario, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Plastic Surgery at British Columbia Children’s Hospital. He has a board certification in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from the

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Evans is active in the following society memberships: Initiate Fellow, American College of Surgeons (ACS), American Cleft Palate Association (ACPA), American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), American Society of Aesthetic Plastic surgery (ASAPS), Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons (CSPS), and Christian Medical and Dental Society (CMDS/CMDA).

Prior to joining Le Bonheur, Dr. Evans served as director of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at a University of Southern California – affiliated hospital in Ventura, Calif. In this position, he oversaw program development, family-centered care delivery and the innovation of new treatments for patients with facial clefts and other complex craniofacial conditions.

MEMPHIS BUSINESS JOURNAL HEALTH CARE HERO AWARDS

Dr. F. Elizabeth Pritchard was honored during the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society event in June. Dr. Pritchard served as Associate Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology and as a general surgery program director for many years. A native of Memphis, she attended the University of Memphis and then attended UTHSC where she did her surgical residency and later joined the faculty in 1991. (B. Young/UTHSC).

On August 17 at The Kent, Evan S. Glazer, MD, Associate Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology and Timothy C. Fabian, MD, professor emeritus and retired chair of the UTHSC Department of Surgery were honored for their work in health care in Memphis and the Midsouth during Memphis Business Journal ‘s Health Care Heroes Award reception. Glazer won in the Health Care Provider-Physician category and Fabian, Elvis Presley Trauma Center founder and retired director, won the Lifetime Achievement Award. As a part of the Resident Research Presentations, Andrew Fleming, MD, was awarded first place in the Phillip Burns Cancer Paper Competition for his presentation, “Aggressive Pursuit of No Evidence of Disease Status in Hepatoblastoma Improves Survival,” while Jennifer Allison, MD (PGY5) placed second in the Basic Science and Clinical Science Paper Competition for her presentation, “The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Elective Bariatric Surgery Outcomes, Complications and Readmission Rates.”

The Elvis Presley Trauma Center at Regional One Health celebrated its 40th anniversary on August 10, as the MidSouth’s only Level-1 Trauma Center, serving a 150-mile radius that includes parts of TN, MS, AK and MO. It is one of the busiest Level 1 Trauma Centers in the nation.
