MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Welcome to the Spring 2022 edition of the UTHSC Department of Surgery newsletter. With the arrival of spring, we finally have the opportunity for renewed optimism. We are seeing dwindling numbers of COVID-19 infections in the community and more importantly, in our hospitals and their ICUs. This, in turn, has led to the relaxation of restrictions and the resumption of in-person events at both the institutional and national levels.

The ability to once again, personally interact with colleagues is indeed gratifying.

Along these lines, this past month, we had the honor of welcoming Dr. John Tarpley, Professor of Surgery and Anesthesiology Emeritus, Department of Surgery, Section of Surgical Sciences, and Site Director and Associate Chief of Surgical Service, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, as our annual Global Surgery Distinguished Visiting Professor.

Accompanying him was his wife, Dr. Margaret Tarpley, who also provided a lecture for the UTHSC Multicultural and Global Health Program.

With these many new developments, I look forward to a strong closing to the final quarter of the 2021-2022 academic year. I once again thank all of you for your outstanding contributions to the Department of Surgery.

DEPARTMENT NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CHIEF OF THE DIVISION OF VASCULAR AND ENDOVASCULAR SURGERY

Hot off the press, it is our privilege to introduce our new group of UTHSC Department of Surgery residents. They are truly an extraordinary group of individuals. Please join me in welcoming them to the family! We owe a significant debt of gratitude to Dr. Alex Feliz, Program Director and Ms Cynthia Tooley, Program Coordinator for organizing a seamless virtual interview process for a superb group of applicants. Also special thanks to the Department faculty members who dedicated their time to not only serve as interviewers.

Dr. Erica Mitchell, Professor, has been appointed Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, effective April 1st, 2022.

She has also been appointed to the Society of Vascular Surgery (SVS) Document Oversight Committee, SVS Wellness Task Force Vascular Coach Program, and SVS-American College of Surgeons Vascular Center Verification Program.

In addition to our new residents, we are also pleased to announce the successful recruitment of numerous new faculty members to the Department of Surgery and in particular, Dr. Devra Becker from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, as our new Division Chief of Plastic Surgery. Furthermore, in recognition of her ongoing leadership, Dr. Erica Mitchell has been officially appointed Division Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.

Dr. Mitchell joined UTHSC Department of Surgery in January 2021 as a professor, interim chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery, and the medical director for vascular and endovascular surgery at Regional One Health.

Dr. Mitchell earned her medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. She received a Master of Education degree in surgical education from Imperial College London, and recently completed a Master of Health Care Delivery Science degree at the Tuck School of Business and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. She completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, a fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon, and a fellowship in interventional radiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Although we celebrate our many positive accomplishments, it is critical to acknowledge the ravages of war that are occurring overseas in the Ukraine. We should be extremely proud of the members of our UTHSC Global Surgery Institute who are engaged in humanitarian aid both locally and literally, on the ground. Please read further to learn about these extraordinary efforts.

DEPARTMENT NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CONT. AMANDEEP BAJWA, PHD

SASKYA BYERLY, MD Assistant Professor, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care, was recently appointed Associate Trauma Medical Director. Dr. Byerly also received Eastern Association for Trauma Surgery (EAST) Leadership Development Program Scholarship. The award includes tuition for a threeyear workshop series for future trauma leaders.

Associate Professor, Division of Transplant Surgery is co-principal investigator on a recently awarded NIH R01 grant for a research project entitled “Off target mechanisms of kinase inhibitor toxicities.” This is her second active R01 grant.

Assistant Professor, Division of General Surgery, submitted Center of Excellence (COE) Application for Bariatric Surgery at MUH. Dr. Davis was also a moderator for two scientific sessions at the Academic Surgical Congress, Orlando, FL.

Associate Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, has been appointed Clerkship Director for medical students.

Associate Professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery, was recently named Publication Chair for the Society of University Surgeons (SUS).

This position includes serving as Chair of the SUS program committee and he will play a key role in planning the Academic Surgical Congress meeting.

Assistant Professor, Division of Plastic Surgery, awarded outstanding paper presentation at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 2021 Annual Meeting, Atlanta, GA, for his paper: “The Role of 3D Scanning Technique in Accurate Evaluation of the Skin Surface Area of the Skin Deficiency and the Skin Acquired in the Tissue Expander Reconstruction Patients.”

Professor and Division Chief, Division of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, has been named as the first Susan and Alan Graf Endowed Chair in Pediatric Heart Surgery at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

Associate Professor, Division of Plastic Surgery, is the site principal investigator of two recently initiated clinical trials at the Firefighters’ Burn Center at Regional One Health. 1) Plurogel- A Randomized Controlled Study Evaluating a Surfactant-Based Wound Dressing for Tissue Salvage and Reduction in Surgical Burden. 2) Acute Burn Resuscitation Multicenter Prospective Trial (ABRUPT2).

NEW ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF BRENDA YOUNG, MA, COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

BRANDI LEWIS, ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT IV

Ms. Young joins the Department in March 2022 as Communications Coordinator.

She previously served at Northeastern Illinois University in a communications and marketing capacity. She brings with her a further 14 years of sports reporting experience.

Ms. Young earned her BA in Radio and TV Broadcast Journalism and English from the University of Mississippi, and MA in Communications, Media and Theatre from Northeastern Illinois University.

Ms. Lewis joins the Department in March 2022 as an Administrative Assistant IV. She has served in the UTHSC Office of Research since 2018, and was previously a Personnel Administrator for the United States Air Force. Ms. Lewis earned her BS in Business at the University of Phoenix. She is a Memphis native and is excited to begin the next chapter of her career with the Department of Surgery.

PEDIATRIC SURGERY

PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY

RACHEL LANDISCH, MD

DEVRA BECKER, MD

Assistant Professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Landisch completed her medical education and general surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. During this time, she completed a Pediatric Surgery research fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She served as a resident representative in the Midwest Pediatric Surgery Consortium, with contributions to several multiinstitutional clinical studies. Dr. Landisch’s interests include enhancing current understanding of complex neonatal problems and pediatric trauma with high-quality clinical studies using multimodal research. She will join the Department in September 2022.

Professor and Division Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Becker will join the department in June 2022.

She is currently at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Plastic Surgery.

She completed her undergraduate studies at Brandeis University where she graduated summa cum laude with departmental honors in Linguistics and Cognitive Science. She then earned her medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and completed her Plastic Surgery training at Washington University School of Medicine/ Barnes Jewish Hospital. She completed fellowships in craniofacial surgery and facial surgery in Paris, France, and in Cleveland, Ohio.

TRAUMA/SURGICAL CRITICAL CARE

Dr. Becker specializes in reconstructive surgery, and performs the breadth of plastic surgery including complex multidisciplinary reconstruction, body surgery, elective and traumatic hand surgery, wound care, and facial surgery. She has garnered a national reputation for her work, and is regularly invited to contribute to national meetings. Dr. Becker is widely published including peer-reviewed articles and invited book chapters on the topics of ethics, outcomes and surgical quality. She also contributes to online learning modules and helps to set the national Plastic Surgery educational curriculum through her leadership roles at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. She has received several awards for her work in surgical education.

THOMAS EASTERDAY, MD Assistant Professor, Division of Trauma Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Easterday attended Purdue University for his undergraduate degree. He earned his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. After medical school, he completed his general surgery residency at Atlanta Medical Center. Dr. Easterday is completing his fellowship training in Trauma/Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He will start in his new position in September 2022.

Dr. Becker is a diplomate for the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgery, and the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons. She is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

VISITING PROFESSORS

NEW FACULTY CONTINUED VASCULAR SURGERY MAUNIL BHATT, MD

JOHN L. TARPLEY, MD Professor of Surgery and Anesthesiology Emeritus, Department of Surgery, Section of Surgical Sciences, and Site Director and Associate Chief of Surgical Service, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, served as Global Surgery Visiting Professor on March 9, 2022. Dr. Tarpley served at Baptist Medical Centre, Ogbomoso, Nigeria 1978-1993, and the University of Botswana until August 2021.

Dr. Bhatt will join the University of Tennessee Health & Science Center at Regional One Health as Assistant Professor of Surgery in September 2022.

He is currently completing his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of California San Francisco after successfully completing his general surgical training at Boston Medical Center, Boston MA, and medical education at Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Medicine. He earned a BS in Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior with an emphasis on Neuroscience at UC, Davis with Dean’s Honors. He holds a strong interest in global health and vascular trauma and the impact of trauma on function and livelihood, and is fluent in Gujarati and Hindi.

Dr. Bhatt’s research interests include socially responsible surgery, outcomes after vascular trauma, and trauma prevention. He enjoys travel, volunteerism, scuba diving, rock climbing, racquetball, and Mitwas dance. He and his wife look forward to their move to Memphis.

KATHERINE J. DEANS, MD Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University and Chief Clinical Research Officer for Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Deans is the co-founder and director of the Center for Surgical Outcomes Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and a practicing pediatric surgeon.

She will serve as Pediatric Surgery Visiting Professor May 24-25, 2022.

VASCULAR SURGERY ELIANNE ROJAS, DO Dr. Rojas will join the University of Tennessee Health Science Center at Regional One Health as Assistant Professor of Surgery in September 2022.

She is currently completing her Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center after successfully completing her general surgical training at Christiana Hospital, Newark DE and medical education at Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of Central Florida in 2010. Dr. Rojas holds a strong interest in limb salvage and brings with her unique endovascular and open surgical skills for the management of complex tibial disease. She also has significant experience in fenestrated endovascular aortic repair. Dr. Rojas is fluent in Spanish as she was born and spent her childhood in Cuba. She enjoys cooking, sketching, fishing, cycling, reading, travel, and video games. She looks forward to her move to Memphis with her partner Marcella.

JAMES HOWE, MD Professor of Surgery, and Chief, Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery, University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine, will serve as the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society Distinguished Visiting Professor on June 10, 2022, at the Peabody Hotel, Memphis, TN. Dr. Howe served as the Immediate Past President, Society of Surgical Oncology.

INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE INTERNATIONAL SERVICE WORK GLOBAL SURGERY INSTITUTE (GSI) The GSI works to promote surgical missions across the globe, to assist surgical residents and students interested in mission work, and to apply clinical care lessons learned around the globe. The GSI is currently planning trips to Honduras, the Philippines, and Zambia this year.

INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC WORK SOCIETY OF AMERICAN GASTROINTESTINAL AND ENDOSCOPIC SURGEONS (SAGES) Dr. Nia Zalamea, Division of General Surgery, was Lead Faculty for the SAGES Global Laparoscopic Advancement Program (GLAP), Costa Rica, February 2022, and Co-lead Faculty for on-site lap simulation at the SAGES Learning Center. The SAGES GLAP is also scheduled for Memphis, TN in 2022 (date TBD).

AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS (ACS) As part of the ACS program ‘Operation Giving Back,’ the ACS and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) Surgical Training Collaborative partnered to launch a training hub in Hawassa, Ethiopia. Additional training centers are being established in Lusaka, Zambia, and Kigali, Rwanda. Dr. Zalamea, and Dr. Denis Foretia, Division of General Surgery, are appointed respectively to Quality and Research Workgroups for the Lusaka Training Hub.

ASSOCIATION FOR ACADEMIC SURGERY (AAS) Dr. Foretia serves on the Global Affairs Committee which is charged with recommending and implementing programs that enhance the exchange of educational opportunities between the AAS and international surgical organizations. Global Affairs Committee members will also participate in the development of international courses, coordinate international exchange programs, review applications for the AAS Visiting Professorship Awards, and assist in hosting the AAS’ international guests during the Academic Surgical Congress.

ASSOCIATION OF ACADEMIC GLOBAL SURGERY (AAGS) Dr. Martin Fleming, Division of Surgical Oncology has been appointed Institutional Representative for the UTHSC Department of Surgery; Dr. Ying Weatherall, Division of Pediatric Surgery, was named Chair of the Diversity, Inclusion and Membership committee;and, Dr. Zalamea was appointed Chair of the Ethics committee and member of the Advisory Board.

UTHSC PHYSICIANS PROVIDE SURGICAL HELP IN UKRAINE Peggy Reisser, Communications Manager While UTHSC is not directly involved in Dr. Novick’s work in Ukraine, relationships built at UTHSC through these global outreach efforts stand to contribute to the surgical relief in Ukraine.

William Novick, MD, professor of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, has operated on children around the globe as part of his mission to extend access to care to children in need wherever they are.

Nia Zalamea, MD FACS, assistant professor of general surgery, director of the UTHSC Global Surgery Institute, and associate director of the UTHSC Center for Multicultural and Global Health, has done medical mission work annually in the Philippines since 1999 with her family foundation, the Memphis Mission of Mercy, a nonprofit to provide health care in her parents’ home country of the Philippines. Dr. Zalamea and this organization are making plans to hospital supplies, surgical instruments, blankets, stretchers, and other equipment to send to surgeon partners in Ukraine.

He had operated on some babies in Ukraine in January, and when the war broke out there, even though he was on a surgical trip in the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the time, he felt compelled to return to Ukraine to check on them and help other children in need of surgery in the war zone.

The Paul Nemir, Jr. Professor of International Child Health at UTHSC and the founder of the Novick Cardiac Alliance, Dr. Novick arrived in Ukraine on Sunday, March 13, and performed surgeries in the city of Lviv, working through his foundation, until leaving on Saturday, March 19.

The Memphis Mission of Mercy has for years been collecting medical supplies and equipment for the hospital it plans to build in the Philippines. The supplies are stored in a 5,000-square-foot warehouse in South Memphis, space donated by Methodist Le Bonheur Health Care, she said.

Dr. Novick has been leading medical teams to treat children with heart disease for more than 28 years. In 1993, he created the foundation now known as the Novick Cardiac Alliance, which is based in Memphis, to care for children with heart disease in underserved countries. He has recruited a team of clinical experts, including physicians, nurses, and other specialists in pediatric cardiac care, to make the trips with him as part of the work of the alliance.

Dr. Zalamea said the foundation board voted recently to send the supplies to Ukraine to help there with immediate life-saving needs. “We had a meeting, and with two cargo planes available, we decided we have to give everything, except for the operating tables (which are too big to transport and not yet needed), because they don’t have anything.”

“We have the supplies and COVID has delayed us building the hospital,” Dr. Zalamea said. “It is really hard to say, ‘we are holding on to this for a hospital that’s not yet built.’ ”

Dr. Novick is also a leader in the UTHSC Center for Multicultural and Global Health. Its mission is to cultivate and leverage relationships with institutions locally, nationally, and globally to expand student, resident, and faculty access to multicultural health care delivery, address global health challenges, and train the next generation of global health leaders.

The planes would leave from North Carolina and land in Poland to get the supplies to Lviv, an effort being organized by a collective called Hope2Ukraine, a collaborative of charitable organizations with partners providing relief in Ukraine.

The Center for Multicultural and Global Health was born from experience gained through another global outreach organization at UTHSC, the Global Surgery Institute (GSI).

Founded in 2018 in the College of Medicine, the GSI was designed to anchor and support surgical mission work that was already being done across specialties at UTHSC. Dr. Novick is also among the founders of this group, which has done surgical outreach with faculty, residents, and students providing health care in Honduras, the Philippines, Tanzania, Japan, Iraq, Zambia, and elsewhere.

Dr. Zalamea said, “One of our board members reflected, ‘It’s funny, we have been spending the last 10 years preparing for a particular moment in time when we might be able to fill a mission hospital with all of these supplies, and that day perhaps is to come. But perhaps the Lord has actually been preparing for this moment instead, with this need before us, and we happen to have an answer to that need.’ ”

SBAS CONFERENCE

UTHSC DIVISION OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY HAS STRONG PRESENCE AT NATIONAL SSO MEETING

Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Alexander Feliz, Division of Pediatric Surgery, UTHSC has been selected to serve as the host institution for the 37th Annual Meeting of the Society of Black Surgeons (SBAS) taking place in Memphis, TN, September 16-19, 2027. Dr. Feliz serves as the UTHSC Faculty Liaison to SBAS. The vision of SBAS is to be the preeminent surgical organization and relevant voice in healthcare that: • Increases the number of black and underrepresented minority faculty in academic surgery

The Society of Surgical Oncology met for its International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care, SSO2022, March 9-12, 2022 in Dallas, TX. UTHSC Division of Surgical Oncology faculty played an active role in presenting and moderating several sessions at the meeting:

• Cultivates development of surgical scientists • Promotes members to leadership positions in American and global surgery

• David Shibata, MD moderated the “Colorectal Great Debate: Total Neoadjuvant Therapy for Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer.”

• Eliminates health disparities.

• Paxton Dickson, MD was the session moderator for “Case Studies in Adrenal Tumor Management.”

• Evan Glazer, MD moderated “The Surgeon’s Role in Multi-modal Treatment of Gastro-esophageal Tumors.”

• Jeremiah Deneve, DO presented a lecture on “Treatment of Mucinous Adenocarcinomas of the Appendix.”

• Leah Hendrick, MD PGY-4 gave a research podium presentation titled “Patterns of Differential Gene Expression May Provide Potential Biomarkers for Anal Cancer Progression.”

• Ambria Moten, MD Surgical Oncology Fellow gave a poster presentation titled “The impact of social determinants of health on outcomes following surgery for hepatocellular carcinoma.”

STORER STUDENT SURGICAL RESEARCH AWARD The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce the availability of funds to support the travel of medical students to national meetings to present their scholarly work. The program is intended to support UTHSC medical students working with a faculty mentor in the Department of Surgery. Funds are available for three (3) $1000 awards per academic year. Funds are to be used towards meeting registration, airfare and 1-2 nights hotel stay.

A UTHSC medical student must be the first and presenting author on the abstract or presentation, and the senior author or mentor must be a faculty member with a primary appointment in the UTHSC Department of Surgery.

The funds will only support travel to a national meeting (no local, regional, or international meetings are eligible).

The abstract must be accepted for oral presentation (plenary or full oral; poster presentations are not eligible).

Timeline: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the academic year. Applications should be submitted within one week of notification of abstract acceptance. Grant recipients and mentors will be notified by email. Grant recipients for the past academic year will be announced during the awards ceremony at the Department of Surgery Harwell Wilson Surgical Society meeting. Grant recipients will be expected to submit their abstract for presentation at the Department of Surgery Harwell Wilson Surgical Society meeting. Any questions about the grant (eligibility, formatting, etc.) should be directed to Dr. Ankush Gosain.

The presentation and subsequent manuscript must acknowledge support from the Storer Student Surgical Research Award. Preference will be given to students with a career interest in Surgery. Students may not receive the award more than once during their medical school career.

The application should include the following information: 1. Name of medical student, year of graduation 2. Name of primary mentor, division affiliation

SUMMER CANCER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP The UTHSC Summer Cancer Research Fellowship is open for applications. Rising M2 medical students are eligible to apply to work with the Center for Cancer Research Members.

The UTHSC Summer Cancer Research Fellowship (SCRF) offers an incredible chance for medical students to experience a summer research opportunity in projects ranging from bench science, pre-clinical studies, bioinformatics, to clinical studies. Students will gain cutting edge research experience on hypothesis-driven projects with 1:1 mentoring from principal investigators (PIs) who are Cancer Center members in basic science, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, medical oncology, physical therapy, or other cancer-related fields. The SCRF is funded by the Center for Cancer Research. Eligible candidates are UTHSC medical students who have completed their first year of medical school (rising M2 students).
