A MAGAZINE OF UTICA COLLEGE FALL 2018

Above and Beyond How five UC students are reaching new heights in internships all over the world

FIRST WORDS Letter from the Editor Intern-al Relations For college grads of my generation (and maybe yours, too) the term “intern” was synonymous with “coffee fetcher,” “copy maker,” or the more general “unpaid, overworked assistant.” During my college days, my friends and I often traded horror stories about the menial tasks we were assigned as part of our internships. These tales ranged from the mundane (I was once instructed to photocopy an entire dictionary to save the company the cost of a new one) to the demeaning: A friend interning at a major city newspaper spent his first day on the floor picking staples from the carpet. But in my senior year, I hit the internship jackpot. I scored a gig as an editorial intern at Baltimore Style, a regional lifestyle magazine. Sure, I did my fair share of grunt work (those envelopes weren’t going to lick themselves), but I also got to write real stories and be part of the magazine process, which began with informal brainstorms in the editor’s office and ended with a tangible, glossy product and my name in print. Without that experience, I probably wouldn’t have been inspired to pursue a career in magazine writing, or earn my master’s in journalism, or go on to a career I love. (And, for what it’s worth, you probably wouldn’t be holding this exact magazine in your hands right now.) To me, that’s exactly what an internship should be—life changing. In this issue, you’ll find more stories of internships that helped UC students learn valuable lessons about their chosen fields, the professional world, and themselves—with

no copy-making or staple-picking required. I’m thrilled to share their experiences, along with lots of other great UC stories, in this issue. As always, let us know what you think. Justine Hutchins ’14, G’15 Through her unique new program, occupational therapist Justine Hutchins ’14, G’15 is helping young women cope with mean girls—both at school and online. When Justine Hutchins chose occupational therapy as her major at UC, her goal was simple: She wanted to help people. As a kid, she’d seen her own grandpa and a close friend suffer traumatic injuries, and Hutchins watched how OTs were critical in helping them build strength, improve self-esteem, and regain independence during their recovery. Today, Hutchins, now a full-time OT at central New York-based Little Lukes Childcare Center, is doing the same for victims of another type of trauma: bullying. Founded in 2017 and launched in April 2018, Girl Empowered Talk is a group for young women to talk openly about self-esteem

3

issues and learn strategies to cope with bullying, both in school and on social media. “Doing something like this has been a dream of mine for a very long time,” says Hutchins, who was bullied herself as a teen and vividly remembers the pain and isolation of feeling like “you’re the only one going through it,” she recalls. “Female bullying is so different from the way boys pick on one another, and I felt like there weren’t a lot of resources out there for me.” With Girl Empowered Talk, Hutchins hopes to gives young women the accepting, nonjudgmental environment she wanted as a teen, along with

constructive ways to deal with the bullies themselves. After months of planning, she launched the program in her hometown of Boonville, New York. In early 2018, she met with the school’s guidance counselor, who helped spread the word through parents and teachers. On social media, she connected with local Girl Scout troops and the 4H Club to attract interest. During the first session in May, Hutchins used the techniques she’s honed as an OT to facilitate open discussion among the young women, who ranged in age from nine to 18. “Rather than asking them directly about being bullied, I’d say things like ‘tell me about bullying you’ve seen at school or online,’” she says. “My goal is to act as a facilitator, because more than anything, these girls just want someone to listen.”

After the conversation, Hutchins led the group in mindfulness exercises, journaling, and a guided meditation, focusing on the idea that, with bullies, “their behavior is about them, not about you.” The group’s second event is scheduled for the fall in Liverpool, New York, and Hutchins is already planning a third. She’s also in the process of earning her yoga teaching certification in the hope of offering more yogabased exercises during group sessions. Feedback after the first session, she says, has provided plenty of encouragement to keep Girl Empowered Talk going—and growing—far into the future. “One of the youngest participants told me it was the first time she was able to talk about her feelings without being interrupted,” Hutchins says. “That means everything to me.”

YOUR LETTERS

Cheers to Unity I was happy to read that students participated in a Unity Walk during the fall semester (“A Meaningful Mile,” fall 2017, p. 8). There was quite a bit of racial tension on campus between African-American and white students when I was at Utica College back in the day. Hopefully that was a period the College will never see again. I believe in inclusion for all people, regardless of race, color, or disability. I have the picture of the Unity Walk hanging on the wall in my office. It has really meant a lot to me, and I look at it every day. Jim Moore ’75 Ardmore, Pa. The Magazine’s Makeover

and future of Utica College, it will be a success.

As an alumnus I thought I would offer a few comments on the new magazine. The name Utica is bold, fresh, and relevant. The design is clean and compelling.

William Weckesser ’71 Toronto, Ontario, Canada

As for the content, I could not stop reading it. I studied with Dr. Eugene Nassar (fall 2017, p. 20), and I knew Ray Simon (fall 2017, p. 1) so those articles were of great interest to me. However, the stories on Dr. Marijean Levering (fall 2017, p. 32) impressed me the most. All of the articles are interesting and convey a very positive impression of the College. As long as the magazine continues to celebrate the past, present,

My compliments on the fall 2017 issue of Utica. You all put in your time on the redesign, and it showed. My wife (Mary Scallon ’69) and I both read the magazine when it arrives, so this issue was quite a surprise. I was sad to see Dr. Nassar had passed. I only had him for one course, but his enthusiasm was truly infectious, and he was so welcoming to any comments we students would come up with. “Making Headlines” (fall 2017, p. 26) was a real look back on how the Tangerine

was run and what it faced. My wife and I were there in the mid-late ’60s—heady times, indeed. I was in the first wave of veterans coming out of the military and using the new G.I. Bill, and we truly felt we were in a different world from what we had been experiencing. It was a very difficult time (not unlike now), and we were all trying to make sense of it in our own way. Keep up the good work. Ken Scallon ’70 Nassau, N.Y. I see no reason to change the name of The Pioneer to Utica except for your hubris. The list of donors should have been listed alphabetically

by last name (“President’s Report,” fall 2017, p. 37). What you have is a useless group of names that is very confusing. Professor Simon would have been aghast. Sandra Haponski ‘56 Lady Lake, Fla.

Familiar Faces I enjoy reading Utica magazine to learn about what’s going on at UC, seldom expecting to find any relevance in Alumni News or Class Notes to my class and classmates of 1950, except the In Memoriam section. So imagine my surprise and joy to find a picture on page 37 (“Pioneer Past,” spring 2018) of people I knew. I believe it’s a picture of the members of Eta Mu Chapter, Alpha Phi

Thanks so much, though, for making my day. Frank Ockenfels ’50 Prescott, Ariz.

CORRECTION: Some happy news to report regarding an unfortunate error in the spring 2018 issue of Utica. In “Remembering Ray,” p. 25, an essay refers to “the late Jack Behrens.” The legendary UC journalism professor is very much alive and quite busy. In fact, he just published a memoir about his fascinating career as a lifelong journalist who has interviewed everyone from President Ronald Reagan to Walt Disney. We are deeply sorry for the mistake (one that Professor Behrens taught generations of UC students to avoid through careful editing and proofreading). For more info on Behrens’ latest book, visit his website at writerjackweb.com

LENDING A HAND More than 70 students spent their fall break giving back to the community. As part of the first Alternative Fall Break initiative on October 9, this group of UC students volunteered with six local non-profit organizations, including the YWCA, Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees, and Kids Oneida.

UC Opens New Accelerated Nursing Program Site in Miramar, Florida The grand opening of UC’s new nursing site in Miramar, Florida, on September 13 was a celebration of Utica College and the nursing profession. Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam and Florida State Senator Anitere Flores attended the celebration, along with UC’s Senior Vice President for Student Life and Enrollment Management Jeffery Gates and nursing student Vanessa De La Cruz ’19, who performed the ribbon-cutting honors. The Miramar facility is designed to support the expansion of UC’s regionally accredited 16-month ABSN program and is equipped with state-of-the-art nursing labs that replicate the clinical setting with anatomically correct task trainers, full-body patient

simulators, and contemporary hospital equipment. It also features a study area, student lounge, and onsite café in the building complex. One highlight of the ribbon-cutting ceremony: an inspiring speech from Evelyn Gonzales, Director of Clinical Workforce Development at Memorial Healthcare System, one of UC’s affiliated clinical rotation sites. “The heart and soul of hospitals are bedside nurses,” Gonzales told the aspiring nurses. “They are the ones who wipe away the tears, who keep the patients and families informed of what is going on and, ultimately, they are the ones who are there when the others go home.”

Can We Talk? Dr. Jonathan Zimmerman began his address at UC on September 13 with a startling statistic: The more education you have, the less likely it is that you’ve had a conversation with someone of a different political perspective in the past year. “That, to me, is the ultimate indictment of American higher education,” he said. “Education should mean exposing us to things that aren’t us.” In his talk, which kicked off UC’s year-long “Talking Across Differences” series, Zimmer-

Student Group Spotlight: UC Improv Club No campus organization devoted to your favorite hobby? Improvise. That’s what Cali Kesses ’19 did in spring 2017, when she founded UC’s Improv Club. Devoted to the quirky art of improvisational theatre, the club has around 10 members who span all majors (Kesses herself is a nursing major). No acting or improv experience is required to join. “For us, Improv Club is an escape from our heavy course loads,” she says. “A lot of us wanted to act in college but didn’t necessarily want to commit to performing in one of the theater shows on campus.”

13

man advocated for reasoned, informed debates in the classroom, and encouraged professors and students not to shy away from tough topics for fear of creating controversy. “We need to talk about talk,” he said, explaining that the most effective way to bridge the gaps in society is through open conversation—without name-calling, explicit language, or labels. “Those are the things that substitute for real arguments and delegitimize people on the other side,” he says. “That’s the danger.”

Instead, Improv Club’s weekly meetings are informal gatherings where members play acting games, like using a random object (say, a cardboard box) to create a scene and build characters. “Some games require constant movement, others are slower and focus on individual words, lines, or props,” Kesses says. “Other times we get into smaller groups to watch each other perform and give notes.” Kesses says the group would like to perform publicly at some point, but for now, they’re busy honing their skills and having fun. “We are a very small club, but our members are passionate and happy to be involved.”

“We must encourage the widest possible discussion of ideas, with the understanding that the ideas with which some members of the College community disagree should not be silenced but are best met by other viewpoints and engaged argumentation.” From Utica College’s Statement of Principles on Free Expression, created by students, faculty, staff, alumni, and College trustees and adopted in spring 2018. ATHLETICS

Kaitlyn Stinson ’19 Hometown: South Kortright, NY Major: Health Studies Utica College’s cross-country program has a relatively young history. Even so, years from now, it’s a safe bet that Kaitlyn Stinson will remain entrenched in the record books. The reigning Empire 8 Conference Runner of the Year is an odds-on favorite to earn the honor in 2018. In addition, she captured U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region and All-Academic honors in 2017. Stinson, who has also achieved All-Conference recognition in indoor and outdoor track and field, is not focused on individual accolades. Rather, her sights are squarely set on leading UC to a second consecutive Empire 8 championship.

ATHLETICS

The women’s soccer team started the season with a 7-5-2 record, clinching its winningest season since 2007. The impressive start included a five-game unbeaten streak and three overtime victories. (1) The football team captured the second annual New York State Tool Believe Bowl on October 6, defeating St. John Fisher 33-7 at Gaetano Stadium. The Believe Bowl was created to raise awareness for the Believe 271 Foundation, which supports firefighters battling occupational cancer and other life-threatening illnesses contracted in the line of duty. (2) Tyler Wright ’19 (3) and Mitchell Marlow ’20 (4) combined for five Empire 8 men’s cross country Empire 8 Runner of the Week honors.

The men’s lacrosse program established the Ben Winkler ’12 Memorial “44” Award, which will be presented to the senior team member who best exemplifies hard work, dedication, and teamwork. The award was endowed by Stephen and Lisa Winkler in memory of their son Ben, one of the top offensive players in UC history, who passed away unexpectedly in January 2018. Members of the lacrosse team will vote on the award each fall, and the recipient will wear Winkler’s 44 jersey number during the spring season in his honor.

17

Internships That Work Coffee runs and copy-making? Not for these five interns, who gained powerful real-world experience (and a few job offers) in impressive internships all over the world.

18

Jordan Leogrande ’19 Major: Construction Management Internship: Pre-construction intern at Texas-based commercial construction firm Location: Dallas, Texas Getting the gig: After applying to more than 140 construction companies, Leogrande was thrilled to score an interview with the organization at the top of his list (which he’d prefer not to identify). “I have always been drawn to a bigger playing field,” he says. So when one of the most respected commercial construction firms in Texas offered him a summer internship at their Dallas

19

headquarters, “I jumped at the opportunity.” Ready for takeoff: In his role, Leogrande analyzed data to provide quantity take-offs— construction management lingo for estimates of materials and labor required to complete a job. Leogrande’s work focused on the company’s aviation projects, which included international airport expansions and renovations. Typical day on the job: “I would arrive at my office around 6:30 a.m., have a Donut-Shop K-Cup, and get to work,” Leogrande says. “My goal each day was to walk out of the office knowing more than I did when I walked in.”

Southern discomfort: A Central New York native, Leogrande says he wasn’t exactly prepared for the Texas heat. “It’s a stereotype that Texas summers are hot, but I’m convinced that you don’t know real heat until you spend a summer in Texas.” Good company: Leogrande’s coworkers and supervisors were “some of the brightest and most passionate people in the commercial construction industry,” he says. And the feeling was mutual: Leogrande was offered a full-time position as an estimator at the company after he graduates in spring 2019. “Being handed that job-offer letter is the proudest moment of my life to date.”

“My goal each day was to walk out of the office knowing more than I did when I walked in.”

Allison Della Penna ’18 Major: Psychology – Child Life, Child Life Specialty Concentration Internship: Child life intern at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital Location: Syracuse, New York Getting the gig: Notoriously competitive, child life internships require an extensive application and interview process. Della Penna applied to 20 children’s hospitals throughout the Northeast and scored interviews at 10. She opted for Upstate, where she is the only child life intern on staff. “I knew I could grow professionally and personally here,” she says. “It was the best choice for me.” Talking the talk: A child life specialist is “half teacher, half social worker,” explains Della Penna. While doctors and nurses are concerned with the medical side of a child’s care, the child life specialist helps explain procedures to kids in language they can understand, sometimes using toys and games to make the hospital less intimidating. “Little things that adults take for granted, like the noises or smells of the hospital, can be scary to children,” she says. “My job is to make them comfortable and create normalcy during their hospital stay.” In their shoes: Della Penna knows firsthand the value of a child life specialist’s role. Her younger brother, Griffin, was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 7, and she has vivid memories of the hospital’s child life specialist explaining the procedures her brother was undergoing, like having a

port placed in his chest for chemotherapy. “I remember she used a doll to show me what the port would look like,” she says. “It made it less scary.” Now cancer-free for over a decade, Griffin and his cancer journey help inform Della Penna’s approach to patients every day. “I can tell families that I know what they’re going through, because I’ve been there.” A typical day: As a fulltime intern, Della Penna works at Upstate 40 hours a week. For the first half of her internship, Della Penna worked days in the pediatric oncology unit. In the second half, she transitioned to nights in the “much faster-paced” Emergency Department, she says. “In Emergency, you have no idea what to expect, so it’s more challenging.” In the bag: “It’s become a joke around here that I always have my ‘bag of tricks’ with me,’” she says, referring to her impressive supply of games, toys, and dolls with pretend medical equipment. “Kids learn and express emotions through play, so toys are really important.” Using a blank-faced doll and marker, for example, Della Penna will ask a child to draw how he’s feeling. “It starts the conversation.” Proud moment: While Della Penna mostly works under the guidance of her supervisor, one of her proudest moments was preparing a child for a procedure on her own. “I have been able to develop my own skill set here,” she says “This experience is helping me transition from a student to a professional.”

20

Tyler Dowsland ’19 Major: Cybersecurity Internship: Security Operations Center (SOC) Associate Analyst at CipherTechs Location: Kilkenny, Ireland Getting the gig: Dowsland’s brother works in the cyber field, and he mentioned his company was looking for a summer intern at their Ireland location. “I’ve never been outside the United States before, so that drew me in,” Dowsland says. He interviewed for the position and was selected. He made the big trip across the pond the week after classes ended in May. Quick study: In his role as analyst, Dowsland monitored the company’s clients for security breeches and investigated suspicious activity through IP addresses, browsing history, and geo-locations.

21

“I thought I was going to need weeks of training to comprehend the work I was doing,” he says, “but after a week of hands-on training, I was working in queues just like the other analysts were.” Welcome home: Located about 80 miles south of Dublin, Kilkenny is a small city that “instantly felt welcoming.” Plus, being of Irish descent, Dowsland says traveling to the country “felt like going to the motherland.” Comic relief: “My colleagues were some of the most focused individuals I’ve ever met,” Dowsland says. “But when the day was going slow, someone would make a joke and the whole office would be laughing.” Soccer balls and Frisbees made frequent appearances around the office, too. “It was like working with a bunch of professional comedians.”

Liam Patterson ’19 Major: Physics Internship: Research Intern, Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics

“The sun fascinates me because it’s our closest star and there’s still so much we don’t know about it.”

Location: Boulder, Colorado Getting the gig: UC Physics Professor Linda Dake encouraged Patterson to explore the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, which places qualified undergraduate students at National Science Foundation-funded research sites all over the country. An opportunity to study astrophysics at the University of Colorado Boulder appealed to him most. “I’d never been outside the eastern U.S., so I

was excited to see that part of the country.” He applied and was accepted. Seeing stars: Patterson worked with data collected in the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment to study solar flares, the sudden release of energy in the solar atmosphere. Under the guidance of a mentor, he wrote computer code to detect flares and help scientists understand why— and when—they’re likely to happen. Follow the sun: As a kid, Patterson was obsessed with astronomy. “My parents took me to planetariums, and I loved the idea of exploring the unknown,” he

says. “The sun fascinates me because it’s our closest star and there’s still so much we don’t know about it.” After graduating in spring 2019, Patterson plans to study solar physics in graduate school. Mountain man: When he wasn’t in the lab, Patterson found time to explore Boulder, mostly on his bike. “Boulder is extremely bikefriendly,” he says. “There are bike paths everywhere, and there was even a bike trail from my apartment to my office.” Rocky Mountain National Park was a favorite destination, too. “It’s a great place for stargazing,” he says. “You can see everything.”

22

Mikal Saxon ’19 Major: Communication and Media Internship: Intern, 97.9/105.5 Kiss FM Radio Location: Utica, New York Getting the gig: Saxon connected with Kiss FM personality Kris “Roscoe Red” Majka last year, when a public relations course assignment required him to interview a person in his dream career. The next semester, when it came time to pursue fieldwork opportunities, Saxon reconnected with Majka and scored a position as intern. “My dream is to tell stories for a living and reach a lot of people, and radio is the perfect outlet for that,” he says.

23

Now hear this: Saxon had only been on the job a few weeks (working mostly behind the scenes) when he was asked to go on the air last-minute to share his experience during UC’s lockdown in March 2018. “I just looked at the mic like it was a person I was having a conversation with,” he says. “That helped me get over the nerves.” Man on the street: Though most of Saxon’s time was spent at the station’s studio in Utica, he often found himself representing Kiss FM in the local community. For the station’s popular “CNY Bachelor” contest, Saxon visited Utica hot spots like Ocean Blue restaurant and the Stanley Theater with contes-

tants. He also helped organize the weekly “What the Truck” food truck event during the summer. Says Saxon: “I saw how important it is to network with the community and local businesses.” Working lunch: Saxon says his proudest moment during his internship came at the end-of-semester intern luncheon, organized by communications professor David Chanatry. Saxon invited his supervisor, Kiss FM Promotions Director Liz DeSanctis, to the event. “Ms. Liz helped me every step of the way during my internship, and it was an amazing feeling to reflect on how much I grew and learned about myself in such a short time.”

“My dream is to tell stories for a living, and radio is the perfect outlet for that.”

Meet Todd Pfannestiel

UC’s new provost on his long and winding road to Utica and his student-centered plans for the future. You can learn a lot about Todd Pfannestiel from even the most cursory look around his office. The Godfather is well represented, as are comic books and the Beatles. Autographed photos of Rat Packers like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are proudly displayed. The walls showcase hockey jerseys and sticks, memorializing his favorite team (the Pittsburgh Penguins) and favorite player (Mario Lemieux). The mementos have followed Pfannestiel throughout his long academic career, most recently at Clarion University

in Pennsylvania, where he spent more than 20 years in a variety of roles and planned to spend several more. Clarion, he explains, felt like home. He and his wife, Aimee, a philosophy professor and Clarion alumna herself, had built strong relationships in the community, and Pfannestiel was an integral part of the University’s growth over the past two decades as a faculty member, then dean, and later provost and vice president for academic affairs. But starting in 2015, Pfannestiel couldn’t seem to escape news about Utica College. The tuition reset was “on everyone’s lips in academia,” he recalls. “I was at a national conference, and people kept talking about Utica College and this big thing they did with tuition. I thought ‘wow, now that’s a remarkable move.’ I admired an institution that was bold enough to carve out a path and find a way to follow it.” And then there were the students. The more Pfannestiel learned about UC’s history, mission, and unique student population, namely UC’s many first-generation college students, the more his interest grew. “I saw myself in UC’s students,” he says. “My parents didn’t go to college. They always encouraged me, but I had to find ways to pay for my own education. I had to figure it out.” Even as he continued his work at Clarion with no real interest in leaving, Pfannestiel kept tabs on UC in the years following the tuition reset, including the addition of new

24

academic programs, facilities, and the growing enrollment. He puts it simply: “I had an interest in Utica College long before they ever expressed an interest in me.” So when the provost position opened in 2017, Pfannestiel couldn’t help but explore the opportunity. He certainly had the credentials for the job; he earned his Ph.D. from The College of William and Mary and his B.A. from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He also completed a National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship at Duke University and had spent decades in the classroom as a professor of history. A historian, Pfannestiel has focused his research on American civil liberties and the Vietnam War, among other topics. In late 2017, after talking it over with Aimee, he applied for the job. A few phone interviews later, Pfannestiel was invited to campus. “Meeting the people at UC exceeded my wildest expectations,” he recalls “I really value those personal relationships where you can laugh and joke with your colleagues, and I immediately got that sense from the people I met here.” After his two-day visit, Pfannestiel was sure he’d be getting a job offer—so sure, in fact, that he stopped at the bookstore for a Pioneers ice hockey jersey before heading home. Fortunately, his instincts were correct. Today, nearly five months into the job, the adjustment period has been “fantastic,” he says. “Everyone has been so welcoming, and not just in the way of ‘oh, you’re the new person, so I’ll be nice.’ I’ve felt a genuine connection with faculty, staff, students, and community members.” The easy transition has allowed Pfannestiel to dive into projects designed to increase UC’s relevance on both the regional and national stage “as an institution that continues to offer cutting edge academic programs that students seek and employers need,” he says. He’s already working on initiatives to explore new program offerings, reexamine existing ones, and provide expanded internship opportunities to students. “It’s not so much about fixing problems, but about what we should do next.” Pfannestiel’s ultimate goal, though? To help UC maintain the air of excitement and change that drew him here in the first place. “There have been great successes in the past two years,” he says. “We want to be sure these aren’t just two great years we regress from, but instead ask ourselves ‘how do we repeat and grow from those successes? How do we maintain this momentum?’” “In other words,” he says, smiling, “I want to keep riding the wave.”

Provost Todd Pfannestiel at a Glance Hometown: I grew up all over, but spent my formative years in Sepulpa, a small town in northeast Oklahoma. Pets: Aimee and I always say that our two dogs are our babies. We have a 14-year-old Shepard-Collie named Maddie, and a 3-year-old Shepherd mix named Rocky. They get away with everything. Favorite movie of all time: I absolutely love The Godfather, but my favorite is an Italian film from 1988 called Cinema Paradiso. It’s a love story in the purest sense; the only movie that’s ever brought me to tears. Funniest movie of all time: Young Frankenstein. Or Blazing Saddles. Anything Mel Brooks. Favorite meal: My mom’s meatloaf. I grew up on that stuff. What’s playing on your car radio: The Beatles station on Sirius XM. I haven’t changed the channel once since I discovered that radio station. Favorite sports team: The Pittsburgh Penguins. And the UC Pioneers, of course. Last concert you attended: Paul McCartney in 2015 in State College, Pa. It was my third time seeing him live. Hidden talent: I am confident that I make the world’s best pumpkin roll. It’s pumpkin cake with cream cheese filling rolled up like a jellyroll. I challenge anyone to make a better pumpkin roll. It’s sublime. Favorite way to unwind: Watching a hockey game, or any sporting event. Last great book you read: I reread Candide by Voltaire often, but I just finished The Alienist by Caleb Carr. I’m a big murder-mystery fan, especially when it’s historical. Favorite Utica cuisine: I love Italian food, so my wife and I have enjoyed sampling Utica’s cuisine over the past few months. Riggies, greens, and pizza—everything is delicious. Just the other night I had the best lasagna at Cavallo’s.

Varied Treasure Provost Pfannestiel’s office in DePerno Hall is packed with his most prized possessions, but these three items are among his favorites: 1. My Batman Comics Lithograph. I was a serious comic book collector as a kid, and I especially loved Batman comics. When I was 12, my mom brought me to an art gallery in San Diego, and I thought I’d be bored out of my mind. But the exhibition was all about Batman. I was looking in awe at these paintings, watercolors, and charcoals. The gallery owner could see how much I was enjoying the artwork. He said, “There’s someone here I want you to meet.” Bob Kane, the creator of Batman, happened to be in the back filling out paperwork. He came out and talked to me. He asked questions: “How many Batman comics do you have? What’s your favorite?” I told him, “Detective Comics No. 31. I love it.” This was before the days of email or social media, so we exchanged addresses, and Bob Kane and I became pen pals. In December of 1978, almost six months later, a cardboard tube arrived in the mail. It was a Christmas gift from Bob Kane: the cover of Detective Comics 31. He remembered it was my favorite. At the very bottom, he wrote “To my pal Todd. Best Wishes, Bob Kane.” We continued to correspond over the years, but more infrequently as I grew up and he got older. I still have letters that he wrote, some hand drawings that he did. But this piece means the world to me. It’s been on the wall in every office I’ve ever had. 2. My Mario Lemieux autographed hockey stick. For about as long as I can remember, Mario Lemieux has always been one of my true heroes, just for everything he’s been through and everything he did to make the Pittsburgh Penguins a better team. He autographed this stick for me at an auction in Pittsburgh, and it was real moment for me. I felt like I was 10 again, meeting my sports idol. Every time I see it I can still remember that feeling. 3. “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” record autographed by John Lennon. Beatles fans will say “oh, don’t play favorites,” but John was always my favorite Beatle. When I was in graduate school, I developed an appreciation for everything he did in his art to promote peace. It really resonated with me. I found an autographed Apple version of this record from an auction house, and I had to have it. I framed it with this flier, also from an auction, that John and Yoko released from a plane over Toronto in 1969 as part of the “War is Over! If you want it” campaign.

‘Everyone Deserves Dignity’ After 39 years with Upstate Cerebral Palsy, Louis Tehan ’74 steps down as president and CEO

Nearly 40 years ago, Louis Tehan ’74 began his tenure with Upstate Cerebral Palsy in the basement of Kernan Elementary School in Utica. In those days, Tehan, who retired as president and CEO in May, helped the grassroots agency provide early intervention services to preschool-age children with cerebral palsy. Today, UCP and its affiliates own more than 90 buildings, employ 3,000 people, and offer services and support to more than 30,000 individuals each year. Under Tehan’s leadership, the agency grew beyond cerebral palsy programs, serving people of all ages with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities through residential and outpatient resources throughout the state. At the heart of it all, Tehan has maintained the same philosophy: “Treat every child as if they were the president’s son or daughter,” he says. “Everyone deserves dignity.” To that end, Tehan has always been a champion for parents’ involvement in their children’s treatment and care. Even now, with thousands of skilled medical professionals and therapists comprising UCP’s staff, “families still self-direct services,” Tehan explains. “We offer support, but families do what they think is best for their children. It’s harder to

27

maintain that culture as we grow, but it’s the only culture that works.” Another guiding principle: UCP’s connection to Utica College. The organization remains one of the largest employers of UC grads, and hosts dozens of students each year as interns and volunteers. “It’s a relationship I’ve treasured over the years,” says Tehan, who credits his own success, in large part, to his UC education. “Utica College gave me a solid, well-balanced foundation.” And his sociology professor, the late Doris Miga, was an integral part of it. “Professor Miga kept me on track,” he says. “She showed me the important of research and data, the value of academic study; she encouraged me to pursue graduate school. She was way ahead of her time.” Even in retirement, Tehan isn’t fully stepping back. He remains CEO of Upstate Caring Partners, UCP’s parent organization. He’s slowly cutting back hours, but still regularly works around 35 hours a week. After all, he says, “You can’t just quit cold turkey.”

LEAVING HER MARK. As a Utica College alumna, Mary Hayes Gordon ’82, G ’13 knows the transformative power of a UC education. But it’s as Director of Program Operations for UC’s Young Scholars that she sees the transformation in progress. “I see it everyday when students are working on research, giving presentations, or walking across the stage at commencement.” she says. “This place changes people’s lives.” It’s surely changed hers. As a person of color in a small town in northern New York State, Gordon says her worldview expanded when she first visited UC as a teenager and experienced the diversity of the student body. “I knew instantly this was the right place for me,” she says. By her participation in Planned Giving, Gordon hopes to help future generations of students learn, grow, and transform through education. “I want to leave a mark on the place that left such an important mark on me.” Learn more about Planned Giving opportunities at Utica College. ALUMNI NEWS

On the Front Lines of Tragedy Detective Matt Donaldson ’05 was one of the first police officers on the scene of the now-infamous Mandalay Bay shooting in Las Vegas in 2017. He returned to campus in September to share his experience and offer advice to UC’s aspiring cops. Before a packed house in Macfarlane Auditorium, criminal justice alum Matt Donaldson ’05 shared the details of the most memorable—and most terrifying—day of his life. Donaldson, a detective with the Las Vegas Police Department, was one of the first officers to respond to the Mandalay Bay shooting on October 1, 2017, when a gunman opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds more. “We were sure we were going to die that day,” says Donaldson, who recalled storming the hotel room where the shooter, Stephen Paddock, had assembled more than 25 assault rifles, cameras, and other surveillance equipment in preparation for the rampage. Donaldson and his team found Paddock’s body among the artillery; he had shot himself moments before they entered.

“Your brain is operating on pure adrenaline,” he explained. “After we saw he was dead, it was on to the next thing. I immediately went downstairs and got onto another team to assist with recovery.” Donaldson went on to describe the grim task of identifying survivors on the concert grounds in the minutes after the shooting, and the “surreal silence after so much adrenaline and chaos,” he told the crowd. “All I could hear in that field were hundreds of cell phones ringing—people trying to reach their loved ones. That’s something I’ll never forget.” In his talk, Donaldson credited the team of counselors in his department for helping him cope with the trauma of that day, mostly by encouraging him to “talk about it,” he said. “They took good care of us.” Donaldson, who grew up in the small town of Dexter, New York, also encouraged aspiring law enforcement officers to explore opportunities in major metropolitan areas like Las Vegas, even when they’re far from home. “When you graduate from UC, you have the skill set that large police departments are looking for,” he said. “Because of the quality of the criminal justice program, you’re already on the cutting edge.”

Celebrating 50 Years of Opportunity

In her convocation address on August 24, Zully Ramirez ’09 attributed her professional success as a broadcast journalist to her UC education—and the Higher Education Opportunity Program that “made it all possible.” “Without the HEOP program, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Ramirez, an investigative consumer reporter for Telemundo Chicago. “I still feel grateful.” Ramirez is one of thousands of success stories produced by HEOP, which celebrates its 50th anniversary at UC this year. Funded by New York State in partnership with Utica College, HEOP provides academic and economic help to college students “who might not

otherwise have the chance to succeed,” says John Ossowski, UC’s Director of Opportunity Programs. Like Ramirez, many HEOP students are the first in their families to attend college and need additional guidance and support along the way. “We help with everything from learning how to develop study skills to creating a budget to choosing a major,” Ossowski says. Today, there are 63 HEOP students enrolled at UC. “For these students, college wasn’t a given,” says Ossowski. “They recognize the value in being here and want to make the most of it for themselves, their families, and their communities.”

PIONEER PAST If the members of UC’s drama club look a little bored in their 1958 yearbook photo, they have good reason: Noted in a caption beside the photo, the club—dubbed “The Gaslighters”—performed the same one-act play for local high-schoolers more than 20 times that fall.

ADVANCEMENT UPDATES

Introducing Thurston Hall On September 29, construction management faculty, students, and alumni gathered to celebrate UC’s newest academic building, Thurston Hall. The 15,000-square foot construction management facility is named in honor of lead donor Gary M. Thurston ’68, chairman and CEO of The Hayner Hoyt Corporation and graduate of UC’s construction management program. Many construction management alumni also helped fund the effort. An additional $700,000 was provided by Empire State Development (ESD) through the Regional Economic Development Council. Thurston Hall features a materials lab with materials testing equipment, workspace for construction projects, and

instructional support technology such as whiteboards and AV projectors. The facility also provides computer laboratories and workstations configured with CM-specific software, a multi-use auditorium, and a smart classroom, which includes video conferencing capabilities to support online and on-campus course delivery. “The construction of Thurston Hall offers benefits for the future of the program by helping to attract quality student prospects from across the country and around the world,” said Dr. David Dubbelde, professor and director of the construction management program.

Coming Fall 2019: Pioneer Village A new student housing option is in the works. At a ceremonial “groundbreaking” on October 10, President Laura Casamento welcomed the College’s partners in the project, including Utica Mayor Rob Palmieri; Bob Calli, executive

Profiles in Giving Ken Taubes ’80 Giving back isn’t just a moral obligation for Ken Taubes ’80—it’s an economic principal he believes in. “That’s how it has always worked in this country,” he says. “The current generation helps pay for the future generation.” For Taubes, Chief Investment Officer of U.S. Investment Management for Amundi and Amundi Pioneer in Boston, supporting UC is the best way to give today’s students the same chance at success he was afforded as an accounting major in the late ’70s. A Long Island native, Taubes paid his UC tuition through a “patchwork” of

61

loans, merit scholarships, and work-study funds. He spent summers working as a camp counselor to help pay for books and supplies. Today, as a leader in the financial world (he’s approaching his 20-year anniversary with Amundi), Taubes understands how a college education provides a powerful economic advantage, and that has inspired his longtime philanthropy through UC’s Pioneer Society. Through his endowment of the Kenneth J. Taubes Scholarship, Taubes supports accounting students in financial need. “It’s important to me to give today’s students a break, because education is the best way to succeed economically and professionally.”

The plan calls for three residence buildings, containing twelve gender-inclusive suites. Each suite will be apartment-style with four bedrooms each, two bathrooms, a kitchen with a dishwasher, and a washer and dryer. The plan also includes a community building located next to the tennis courts, near the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center. Pioneer Village housing will be offered to juniors, seniors, and graduate students in fall 2019. “Pioneer Village is another example of Utica College doing what we do best: delivering an exceptional educational experience at a price our students can afford,” said Casamento.

Lasting Legacy: The Joseph Michael Chubbuck Memorial Scholarship In 2011, Joseph Michael Chubbuck was a member of the Army National Guard and a UC student, working toward his B.S. in physics in the hopes of securing a career in military research. But the Chubbuck family’s world was turned upside down in early 2012, when Joey was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer. He passed away in August 2013. Shortly after his death, Joey was awarded his degree posthumously, and his parents Barbara and Joseph ’11 endowed the Joseph Michael Chubbuck ’14 Memorial Scholarship, awarded to physics students at UC that demonstrate academic promise and good character. The Chubbucks have also started The Joseph Michael Chubbuck Foundation, which provides financial assistance to cancer patients and their families, supports cancer research, and advocates for patients and families during treatment. More Than Fun and Games: Jaime Spencer ’99 For years, Jaime Spencer was the only pediatric occupational therapist on staff in the large Levittown School District in Nassau County, New York. A typical day meant shuttling between the district’s 10 school buildings, working with dozens of elementary students and teachers. In an effort to help more teachers in less time, she began posting OT resources, like flashcards and game ideas, on a shared drive that everyone in the district could access. “The teachers loved it,” says Spencer ’99, who also holds a master’s in special education from Adelphi University. “I wanted to reach even more people.” In July 2014, Spencer started MissJaimeOT.com. Now, four years later, Spencer has earned more than 22,000 readers and 6,000 subscribers—mostly parents, teachers, and fellow OTs. Her most popular posts include creative game ideas that help kids improve motor skills in ways that feel like play. “That’s my favorite part about working with children,” she says. “You’re always hiding therapy in fun stuff. It may look like we’re playing a card game, but we’re working on hand dominance, visual tracking, and balance. There’s a method to the madness!” And though keeping up the blog and working fulltime at school isn’t always easy, Spencer is inspired by people who’ve benefitted from her efforts, many who reach out personally through her site. “We have seen tremendous growth from our son in just a few months,” writes one mom on Facebook. “We have Jaime to thank.”

A Cut Above: Ray Escobar ’12 and Fabio Sanchez ’12 When Ray Escobar ’12 and Fabio Sanchez ’12 met at UC’s New Student Orientation in 2008, they knew instantly they’d become friends. Both grew up in nearby neighborhoods in the Bronx, New York, and were into similar music. They later pledged Lambda Sigma Upsilon together and became members of BOND. “We experienced so much together at UC, we’re like brothers,” says Sanchez. After graduation, the friends remained close as they moved back to New York and started their careers; Sanchez as a financial manager at Ernst and Young in Manhattan, Escobar as a property manager for a Bronx-based real estate company. “Ray is the dreamer with the wild ideas, and I’m the finance guy who is more realistic,” says Sanchez. “We always said that we’d make great business partners.” So in summer 2017, when Escobar learned of a property for sale in a prime location in his Bronx neighborhood, he approached Sanchez with an idea: to transform the spot into an upscale salon for men, an alternative to the bare-bones barber shops in the area. After examining the financial and legal details, Sanchez was onboard. “We wanted to do something different, more high-end,” says Escobar. “Men want to feel like they look clean and sharp, and that gives them that boost of confidence.” Sanchez and Escobar purchased the location and set out to create a salon that offered men in the Bronx the type of upscale experience more common in Manhattan, but for a more reasonable price. As a bonus, a salon would be a relatively low-maintenance investment for the business owners, who planned to keep their day jobs, since individual stylists work as independent contractors and promote themselves. “We just provide the platform,” says Sanchez. After a year of meetings, negotiations, and “lots of legal details,” says Escobar, Level Up Grooming Studio opened in June 2018. The response, says Sanchez, has been “fantastic.” “We went from two stylists to four, and the clients keep coming in,” says Escobar, who is already thinking up creative new ventures for Level Up, such as partnering with local charities for events or starting a podcast. But, as usual, his buddy and business partner helps keep his creativity in check. “I tell him we need to focus on building the business now,” says Sanchez, with a laugh. “Then we’ll 64 think about those other things.”

Courage in Action: Robert Piersma ’98 As a Department of Environmental Conservation forest ranger, Robert Piersma ‘98 was trained for water rescues. In more than 17 years on the job, he had never needed to employ those skills. But on April 10, 2017, Piersma relied on his training—and his ability to think fast—when he was dispatched to Chittning Pond in Waterville, New York. Three men had capsized their canoe; one man had made it to safety but the other two were struggling to stay afloat in the frigid water. Witnesses who called 911 estimated the men had been in the water for nearly an hour and weren’t making progress toward the shore. Piersma arrived on the scene and sprang into action. “I ran to my truck, threw on my cold-water rescue gear, and swam out to them,” he says. The men were unresponsive when he approached, and Piersma recalls that it felt harder than he expected to swim with them to shore—only discovering later that the canoe’s anchor had been tangled around one man’s leg. “After I saw that, I realized how badly things could have went,” he says. Once on land, the men were transported to two local hospitals, where they were treated for hypothermia and other injuries; one man’s body temperature was below 87 degrees. EMTs on the scene told Piersma that, without question, he’d saved their lives. At a ceremony in May, Piersma (pictured, second from left) was presented with the New York State Liberty Medal, one of the highest civilian honors, given to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of fellow New Yorkers. Senator Joseph Griffo presented the award. “Ranger Piersma displayed remarkable bravery, courage and initiative,” said Griffo. “He was able to think quickly while under intense pressure and with lives on the line.”
