MEET YOUR EXTRAORDINARY
AUGUST 26
SEPTEMBER 1, 2024
The HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is above all an adventure born of friendship and passion. When my parents, Catherine and Michel Poletti, opened entries for the first UTMB® in 2003 they were confident that they were helping to create something special. Over the years their gamble has become much more than just a race, it has become a human endeavor that unites thousands of runners, volunteers and enthusiasts across the three countries that circle the mountain – France, Italy and Switzerland – around an epicenter of exceptional sporting performance.
Signing up for one of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc races means embarking on an adventure that begins months, or even years, ahead of the start. As organizers, our challenge extends beyond offering an exceptional race, we also seek to conserve the landscapes that our trails crisscross. We implement environmental actions throughout the year and raise awareness among runners, support crews and spectators. As we open a new chapter of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc, our determination to promote sustainable trail running remains stronger than ever.
Beyond the sporting challenge, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is a journey, a human adventure and unique experience. The event is an invitation to connect or reconnect to the beauty, might, and fragility of the natural world. To appreciate the silence and peace of these vast landscapes that remind us how small we are, and how alive we feel faced with the majesty of the mountains. It’s a journey that we look forward to sharing with all participants and our 2,500 volunteers, the pillars of the UTMB family.
« Looking to the future, I’m filled with hope and a touch of impatience at the thought of what the runners will achieve again this year. Their passion, determination and commitment to trail running are the driving forces behind our organization. Together, we continue to surpass our limits, to celebrate the spirit of the trail, and to look out for one another, so that this adventure continues to bring us together year after year.
2024 marks a new era of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc. After 20 years of commitment
and motivation, my parents are passing on this extraordinary event to my brother David and I to continue alongside all the people who work with us today. We are proud to contribute to an event that is so steeped in passion, respect, solidarity and authenticity. Finally, we are honored to have played a part in the development of this fascinating sport, and to have fostered and established new talents.
Isabelle Viseux-Poletti, Director of French UTMB Group events, including the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc.

« The HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc has always been committed to preserving its ecosystem and continues to develop initiatives and innovations in the service of the environment. Raising the awareness of the various stakeholders to more sustainable practices, consolidating initiatives particularly in terms of supply transport and waste management, commitments through associations and charters, and support for the regions, are just some of the areas we in the event organization work on throughout the year. »
Nicolas Lagrange, Director of Operations HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc
As a signatory of the GESI Charter in 2017, an initiative supported by the French Ministry of Sport, the Olympic and Paralympic Games and WWF France, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is constantly innovating to minimize its environmental impact while preserving the quality of its organization and offering a memorable trail experience to all runners.
The GESI Charter structures its efforts through 15 clear commitments including sustainable mobility, the reduction of single-use plastic, sustainable food, and the fight against discrimination, among others. These commitments form the basis of the event’s environmental strategy and are integrated into every aspect of the organization.
To help protect the Mont-Blanc massif, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc has set up UTMB Mobility, a comprehensive transport system available to all event stakeholders (runners, support crews, volunteers, service providers, partners, etc.). It is divided into 3 parts:
- How to get to/from the event ;
- How to get around during your stay (mainly using existing public transport) ;
- How to get around during the race.
Over 80% of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc’s carbon footprint is due to transport, so every option has been explored to reduce this. Every year, efforts are stepped up to encourage all participants — runners, support crews, organizers, partners and spectators — to use more environmentally friendly means of transport to get to/from and around the event.
The organization works actively throughout the year to minimize its environmental impact, while guaranteeing an optimal and accessible experience for all participants. For example, the HOKA UTMB® MontBlanc informs and assures participants that a car is not necessary for getting to or around the Chamonix valley, through email campaigns prior to the event, and also on site through the event’s Environmental Ambassadors who are in direct contact with participants, encouraging the use of public transport set up by local authorities. For the 2024 HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc, a strategic partnership is in place with TGV Lyria and Alpytransfers to facilitate access by train.
In 2024, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is once again investing nearly half a million euros in a large-scale transport plan aimed at optimizing the experience of runners, support crews and spectators throughout the event.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS TRANSPORTATION PLAN ARE TO:
• • Avoid having over 5,000 individual vehicles driving around the area ;
•
• • To provide a collective solution that relieves congestion in the valleys, and facilitates travel for runners, support crews, spectators, and local people throughout the Mont-Blanc region ;
•
• • To encourage as many people as possible to use the public transport systems set up by the local authorities, particularly in the Chamonix Valley ;
•
• • To reduce air pollution.
To relieve congestion, over 80% of the strategic points of the course are inaccessible by car. During the event these locations are accessible exclusively via the UTMB Buses (Saint-Gervais; Les ContaminesMontjoie; le Lac Combal; Arnouvaz; La Fouly and Champex-Lac). Following the Finals is only possible by UTMB Bus (only 2 communes are accessible by car for the UTMB®). The aim is to preserve the tranquility of natural sites, the quality of life and work of the local people, and to avoid overcrowding, while ensuring that participants and spectators can still follow the event efficiently. In 2023 this enhanced plan enabled over 15,000 people to travel on the UTMB Buses.
Throughout the week, 20 volunteer Environmental Ambassadors play an important role in training, raising awareness and encouraging respect for nature. They are on hand to help participants understand and respect environmental protection measures from the moment they receive their race bibs at a dedicated stand, and throughout the 800kms of race trails. They are also in contact with alpacists during the event.
These ambassadors — who cover the entire course twice during the event — are also in charge of enforcing the rules, particularly nonpollution rules, and imposing penalties where necessary.
The HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc guidelines are designed to ensure that all runners contribute to the conservation of the alpine landscape while enjoying their race experience. To this end, the organization has developed specific signage to educate and inform:
- On the need to reduce noise and sudden movements near herds of animals to avoid frightening them.
- To limit the use of sticks in specific areas to protect trails from erosion.
- To close gates after passing through grazing areas to keep animals safe.
- To keep to marked trails to minimize the impact on flora and fauna.
The Environment Commission, created in 2006, is also a fundamental pillar of the event’s environmental commitment. Made up of volunteers and association representatives, this commission assesses the impact of the event, maintains and rehabilitates the trails, and proposes ongoing improvements. After each edition it draws up an assessment and implements effective actions to further reduce the event’s ecological footprint.
This initiative is coordinated by « Les Amis de l’UTMB® Mont-Blanc » association, which also supports other significant local projects such as dedicating €5,000 in 2023 to finance solar panels for the Edoardo Camardella bivouac.
In 2024, the four new projects are:
BERTONE: clean water outlets, new steps and trail.
COL CHAVANNES AND HAUTELUCE: trail restoration.
LES HOUCHES:
new steps, trail widening and stabilization.
Trail conservation extends beyond the needs of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc, and the organization occasionally works on trails outside the event’s routes to contribute to the preservation of the surrounding mountain landscape.
For the 2024 edition, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is testing a pilot project with two 100% vegetarian refreshment points: one on the Col de Balme, for the MCC and OCC races, and the other in Arnouvaz, on the CCC® and UTMB® courses. At both refreshment points charcuterie will be replaced by local Italian products, such as Farinata, a vegetarian gluten-free chickpea galette.
The emphasis is also on responsible food sourcing with priority given to local and organic products to minimize the transport carbon footprint. In 2024, 80% of food supplies will be regional and sustainable to reduce transport and encourage the involvement of local producers. Most of these products will be labelled Agriculture Biologique, Label Rouge, AOP or AOC.
From the outset, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc has adopted responsible waste management practices. The BYOU (Bring Your Own Utensils) initiative, now extended to many sports, was created by the event and implemented as early as 2006.
For its 20th anniversary the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc introduced 100% plastic bottle-free refreshment points, replacing these with carbonated water and soda machines. Through this measure the event not only reduced its impact linked to the transport of bottled water, but also avoided the use of 15,000 plastic bottles.
A driving force in the recovery of organic waste, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc has set up an advanced biowaste collection system, with six actively managed collection points amassing almost 700kgs of organic waste. The compost is managed by the Chamonix-based EcoTriVélo association, which then sells it to farmers in the Arve valley. In parallel, the organization has set up partnerships with specialized local organizations to help improve waste sorting and recycling, such as AREMACS who raise awareness and help manage the sorting on site.
A founding principle, established by Jean-Claude Marmier when the UTMB® was launched, is that it is strictly forbidden to throw any waste on the ground. To support participants in the responsible management of their personal waste (packaging, fruit residues, etc.), the organization gives garbage bags to each runner when they pick up their race bib. Non-compliance with these rules results in a one-hour penalty. This educative approach ensures that all participants understand their role in conserving nature while out on the trail.
• • Compulsory individual cups for runners: 50,000 plastic cups avoided each year, totaling over 800,000 cups since 2008!
•
• • BYOU: 90,000 plastic utensils avoided each year — over 540,000 utensils since 2018!
•
• • No more bottled water: 13,000 plastic bottles avoided each year, or more than 65,000 bottles of water since 2019!
•
• • End of all single-use plastic bottles: 11,000 additional bottles avoided each year since 2023.
« We are all guests in this remarkable environment and a good relationship with each of the communities we pass through is essential to the smooth organisation of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc. These local bonds enable us to give runners the opportunity to discover an authentic and unique relationship with the mountains, towns and countries we cross, while guaranteeing safety and well-being. These relationships also enable us to better value and respect the natural and cultural environments, and to better understand and assess our impact on local inhabitants, which we strive to keep at an acceptable level. Working closely with local communities in the Mont Blanc region is at the heart of our concern and our mission to promote sustainable and respectful trail running. »
David Poletti, Head of Operations and Territorial Relations
Today, the event directly affects 18 communities. Since its inception, event organizers have worked closely with these partner municipalities.
Their role is essential to the smooth running of the event, thanks to their technical and logistical support that includes access to roads and trails, public spaces and infrastructures, supply of equipment, human resources through municipal teams, etc., and to the quality of the hospitality provided throughout the Tour du Mont Blanc.
THE 18 PARTNER MUNICIPALITIES
Chamonix Mont-Blanc, Courmayeur, Orsières, Bourg SaintMaurice, Les Houches, Saint-Gervais, Servoz, Vallorcine, Hauteluce, Beaufort, Séez, Les Contamines Montjoie, la Thuile, Pré Saint-Didier, Morgex, Martigny-Combe, Trient, Bovernier
Active exchanges between the French, Swiss and Italian municipalities involved in the Tour du Mont Blanc. Involvement of the local population, with the support of the residents and strong commitment from the volunteers. This event promotes employment, with seasonal and annual recruitment.
« There’s something very special in the air throughout the week. There’s something magical about it, and it’s not just down to the runners. What’s more, the event takes place at the end of August, beginning of September, which means that the seasonal workers’ contracts can be extended by a week. »
Major economic spin-offs: in 2023 the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc generated €23 million in spending in the region* across all the valley’s socio-economic sectors.
« From a commercial point of view, it’s one of the two best days of the year. »
The collaboration between the organisers and the local authorities has improved media coverage for the whole valley. In 2023 over 2,000 articles were published during the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc, and nearly 500 journalists attended the event, many of them from abroad. The Mont-Blanc region is the world capital of trail running.
« The HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is an integral part of Chamonix’s economic activity. »
Xavier Roseren, Member of Parliament for the 6th constituency of Haute-Savoie
*Study carried out by an independent consultancy (Traces TPI)
To ensure that the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is, and remains, a great festival without any negative impact on local communities, the organisation is doing everything possible to manage event noise levels in Chamonix, with increased efforts and strict measures between 22:00 and 08:00. These include:
- Volunteer Public Order Ambassadors deployed on the ground, trained by the organisers as well as by the Gendarmerie, to help, alert if necessary, and keep noise levels within acceptable limits ;
- Rules posted at various points in the streets ;
- During the day, apart from highlights such as race starts, the loudspeakers are switched off. During these high moments, noise is concentrated under the arch and on the start and finish lines.
In 2023 these efforts enabled the noise level to be kept below 80 dB — comparable to the noise in a school playground — for 85% of the event during the day. For the remaining 15% the noise never exceeded 90 dB, equal to the sound of a busy road. At night, the average was 60 dB. This marked the effectiveness of adopted measures, with agreed noise levels not exceeded. In 2024 this work will again be carried out in collaboration with the town of Chamonix.
The development of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc, particularly in Chamonix, and the influx of spectators have created numerous opportunities for brands seeking to reach trail enthusiasts. This has sometimes led to excesses, such as unauthorized advertising and distribution of products, that impact the local community. To deal with these ambush marketing practices and protect the integrity of the event, UTMB Group has put in place several strict measures including:
- Team training: Training for staff and volunteer ambassadors, enabling them to quickly identify problematic activities ;
- Dedicated team: Creation of a specialised team to quickly manage and stop ambush marketing ;
- Constructive dialogue with brands: To promote an environment of cooperation, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc opens a dialogue with brands to validate their promotional activities in advance of the event. In exchange, the brands undertake to sign a charter respecting local marketing rules, in accordance with the Chamonix advertising regulations.
The HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is proud to contribute actively to the local economies of all the countries it travels through. For example, the event is one of the busiest weeks for hotels and restaurants in Chamonix.
These initiatives aim to ensure a harmonious experience for all participants and the local community.
During the 2023 edition, the event generated almost €23 million in economic spin-offs throughout the Chamonix Valley, with 35% spent on accommodation and 20% in bars, cafés and restaurants.
Since 2003 the organization has been committed to combining the energy of the event with a spirit of solidarity. At the foot of the MontBlanc people are instilled with the famous ‘roped party’ spirit and are driven by a desire to help others achieve their own victories.
« Over the years, we’ve noticed that runners are increasingly involved in supporting charities: both through the charity bibs, which are snapped up very quickly every year, but also via runner donations, which can be made right up to the start of the event. Between 2014 and 2023, we raised over €3 million for 37 local charities! It’s an amount that makes us proud and inspires us to go even further in the years to come. That’s the spirit of sport! »
Sylvie Barquant, Chair of the Solidarity Commission
In 2023, to make an even greater commitment and support more causes, UTMB Group created a new UTMB Cares endowment fund and introduced 70 ‘Care Bibs’, giving runners the opportunity to support the following 4 programs: support for environmental projects designed to preserve and restore the natural mountain environment; a mentoring program designed to encourage female participation in trail running; a program to raise awareness of alternative mobility in the mountains; and support for local associations.
In addition to the charity bibs, the Friends of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc Solidarity Commission has chosen, as it does every year, a selection of local associations to receive event support. When registering, each runner can make a donation.
- ARFEC (Association Romande des Familles d’Enfants atteints d’un Cancer - Switzerland): Since 1987 ARFEC has been based on peer support, with volunteers who have experienced a child’s illness and know the needs of families. The aim of the association is to support and accompany the families of children with cancer during and after treatment. Childhood cancer is a long illness that affects the whole family, including parents and siblings.
In 2024, the event raised €23,211 and donated the amount in equal parts to 4 local associations:
- Fondation Communautaire du Val d’Aoste (Italy): funds socially useful projects aimed at improving the quality of life in the Valle d’Aosta region, through calls for tenders, sponsorships, micro-grants and exemplary projects.
- La Sapaudia (France): Meaning «The land of fir trees», La Sapaudia has for mission and objective to raise awareness on two subjects:
• Promoting and developing actions that support and integrate people with disabilities ;
• Promoting the donation of bone marrow (stem cells) to increase the number of donors.
- Rotary (Switzerland - Italy - France): The 2024 project brings together the 6 Rotary Clubs around the Mont-Blanc: Aosta, Courmayeur, Martigny, Verbier, Mont Blanc Vallée d’Arve and Chamonix Mont-Blanc Megève. Rotary will support 3 associations working for the well-being of women with cancer — in Italy (VIOLA), Switzerland (A Petit Pas Vers Ton Sommet) and France (Des Elles pour Vous).
Since 2022, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc has been the venue for the finals of the UTMB® World Series. The event therefore benefits from the many policies put in place by the circuit to support all athletes – amateur and elite.
All the measures in this policy have been designed in collaboration with athletes with a disability, through a long process of consultation with sportsmen and women across a variety of sports, such as Amy Winters. They include:
- A dedicated course for disabled athletes for the UTMB® World Series Finals ;
- « Runner-guides » to help disabled athletes achieve their goals. These runner-guides will receive a free race bib ;
- Possibility of contacting Athlete Services to request special arrangements: for example, being able to collect your race bib outside official opening hours, or having a reserved area at the start to avoid the crowds.
This policy is designed to support expecting mothers and their partners, with deferral and priority registration options to encourage runners to return to trail running safely. Created after extensive consultation with sports and medical professionals, the Pro Trail Runners Association and athletes such as Sophie Power, it was born out of UTMB Group’s ongoing commitment to equal opportunities.
The policy provides:
- For pregnant athletes (who find out they are pregnant after registration):
• For the Finals (UTMB®, CCC® and OCC): full refund and priority access usable within five years ;
• For 20K category races: full refund and priority access within two years ;
- For athletes whose partner is pregnant, and athletes undergoing adoption or surrogate motherhood procedures: the choice between a full refund or deferral within two years, for the same race.
For this 21st edition, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is promoting greater diversity by welcoming the Adaptive Team, a flagship project that further illustrates the event’s commitment to include disabled athletes in trail running. This initiative – a collaboration with amputee athlete and fervent trail runner Boris Ghirardi – aims to create a space where athletes with disabilities can participate and inspire. The event is further improving accessibility and comfort for athletes, and proving that disability is not an obstacle to sporting performance, while at the same time making it clear that all runners are welcome.
Born of a shared desire to convert challenges into opportunities the UTMB Adaptive Team, comprising 12 disabled athletes, shows that adaptability and resilience opens the way to surpassing oneself. Their motivation and objective are clear: to show that every obstacle can be inspiring and lead to great things. The team members, carefully selected for their profile and positive reputation, embody the values of perseverance, inclusion and solidarity, running not only for themselves but also to motivate and broaden horizons about what is possible in sport.
Among the team’s key figures:
- Boris Ghirardi, also known as ‘Robot Foot’, stands out for his determined and resolute journey from accident to top-level competition. His commitment and determination to overcome physical obstacles have made him a model of resilience and innovation.
- Travis Warwick-Oliver, a South African tibial amputee, who founded an organisation to provide mobility aids.
- Jacky Hunt-Broersma, an American athlete, who set a record by running 104 marathons in 104 days, challenging the limits of amputee athletes.
- French breast cancer survivor Sophie Maigrot, who uses sport as a therapy and to raise awareness of cancer prevention.
- Nicolas Ronget, visually impaired from birth with just under 2/10ths vision in his right eye and less than 1/10th in his left.
- Franck Derrien, an autistic athlete who wears an emblematic blue T-shirt with the message ‘Je suis autiste, et alors?’ (‘I am autistic, so what?’), and who runs with his teddy bear ‘Teddy’, a faithful everyday companion.
The Medical Commission was set up in 2007 and since then, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc races have served as a full-scale laboratory for medical studies and surveys carried out by volunteer doctors. As well as validating research projects, the commission helps to draw up advice designed to improve athletes’ understanding of specific pathologies, making them more sensitive and attentive to trigger behaviors and early symptoms, to reduce risk.
This aspect of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc plays a crucial role in raising awareness and providing medical care for runners. In the lead-up to the event, the organizers set up prevention and education campaigns using advice sheets and e-learning modules.
During the event, a full complement of medical staff is deployed, including first-aiders, state-qualified nurses, state-qualified anesthetist nurses, physiotherapists, chiropodists, doctors and mountain guides. These professionals are supported by approved civil protection associations, and organised and coordinated by the general health and rescue programme.
The Medical Commission plays an essential role by validating surveys, drawing up advice sheets and updating intervention protocols, drawing on the experience acquired during HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc races.
Special security arrangements established in Chamonix ensure effective management of the flow of participants and spectators. This system relies on public order ambassadors, who are volunteers, private security agents, and contracted gendarmes. The HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc organization works closely with the Gendarmerie to ensure that key moments of the event are policed, ensuring the safety of all participants and the public.
Throughout the year the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc organization is attentive to the needs of the trail running community, both amateur and elite. It strives to support athletes to become professional trail runners and accompanies them throughout their career.
Launched in June 2024, the HOKA Prize Purse represents a significant increase in prize money awarded to the winners of the UTMB® World Series races, including the finals of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc. Since its launch, the prize purse has increased by a factor of 2.2. Prize money is awarded fairly, respecting equality between men and women and parity over all distances.
With the aim of rewarding individual performance, the organization will award the top 10 men and women finalists of the OCC and CCC® equally. The UTMB®, the iconic 171km race with 10,000m of ascent, has higher prize money.
As trail running develops and becomes more professional, it has become essential to put in place measures that guarantee fair racing. UTMB Group has recently launched an anti-doping policy based on testing and prevention measures. A first in trail running, the policy has required an investment of almost €100,000 in 2024.
Elite runners also have access to a dedicated service that is available to answer any questions and help them choose the race that best suits their objectives.
The HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc counts on the commitment of 2,500 volunteers, essential to the smooth running of the event. Their involvement is invaluable, and the event is deeply indebted to them. Volunteers are offered a wide range of tasks, including mountain stations, health, rescue, catering, logistics and much more. This unique experience enables them to contribute to the success of an extraordinary event, bringing together thousands of people from the four corners of the globe.
To supervise, monitor and assist the runners across the various races during the week, the organization mobilizes almost 350 health professionals, including 150 first-aiders, 65 nurses, 70 physiotherapists and chiropodists, and 35 doctors.
There are 53 checkpoints along the routes, 120 radios deployed among emergency personnel and 60 computers monitoring the 10,000 runners taking part in the races.
A runner’s first encounter is with him or herself. How will I react to such a distance? Will I have the necessary mental and physical resources? Will I finish? These questions run through the minds of every runner on the trail as they embark on this extraordinary adventure.
Trail running creates bonds between runners, friendships for an hour, a night or a lifetime, during which each runner will help the other to achieve his or her dream. Add to that the enthusiastic support of the public, the volunteers, the men and women who live on the slopes of the Massif and who all give a little of their time and their warmth to urge the runners on.
« As well as knowing how to look after people, you also have to know how to listen, advise, comfort and console people who have retired from the race. When I know that we’ve helped a runner cross the finish line, we share that finisher’s bib with the same joy and happiness as the runner. »
Isabelle Paucot, Head of Nurses on the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc
« Born over 20 years ago, created by my parents, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc has been a driving force in ultra-endurance. Since its launch the organization has innovated, anticipated the next move, and proposed new ideas to develop and structure trail running. Every year since 2003, the opening notes of the ‘Conquest of Paradise’ fill me with emotion – I can’t get enough of the event’s unique and powerful atmosphere. For these runners, for everything that they stand for, for the thousand reasons that drove them to run for the first time, we will never stop working with passion and dedication to share this experience with them while respecting the magnificent and fragile playground that is the Mont-Blanc massif.
»
Isabelle Viseux-Poletti, HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc and France Director.
In the early 2000s, trail running was the domain of just a few enthusiasts. In Chamonix, a group of nine friends dreamed of running from Chamonix, around the Mont-Blanc crossing three countries (France, Italy, Switzerland), and back to Chamonix. After registering the «Ultra-Trail International du tour du MontBlanc» (the original name back in 2002) on international calendars, the organizers set their sights on 300 participants. They never looked back.
In 2003, 722 trail runners from 19 different nations lined up for the first edition. And just three years later, in 2006, the event received 3,400 applications with 2,500 runners taking the start.
In just three years the number of runners tripled! From the one original race, the event has grown to eight individual courses, each with its own unique identity. This year, and for several years now, the event has been operating at capacity with 10,000 runners on the start line. And to ensure the safety of everyone involved, but above all to preserve the delicate environmental balance of the Mont-Blanc, this number will never increase.
To limit the number of applications, guarantee each runners’ experience and ensure optimum safety, since 2007 the organization has required proof of having completed two 50km races or one 80km race. In 2009, experience was quantified by qualification points achieved by completing other races in the two years preceding the event. In 2009, 4 points were required, in 2011 it was 5, in 2013 it was 7, in 2015 it was 8, 9 in 2016, and then 10 points up until 2022.
When the UTMB® World Series was created the qualification method was reviewed, and the Running Stones system was introduced giving access to the draw. This circuit has been built around the Finals held annually at the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc. To enter one of the Finals — UTMB®, CCC® or OCC — runners must have gained Running Stones by taking part in one of the UTMB® World Series Events or UTMB® World Series Majors.

The HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is the pinnacle of global trail running. The week-long festival includes 8 events, each with its own unique identity: UTMB®, TDS®, CCC®, OCC, MCC, ETC, YCC, PTL®. Here, talent can express itself, and only the best can win. These 8 mythical races, on the slopes of the Mont-Blanc, fascinate through the emotions and competition they arouse. The commitment required in this high-altitude environment gives them a unique atmosphere and a global reputation. The courses call for all the skills of a well-trained athlete, both physical and mental.
Whether a runner finishes first or last, the most important thing for every participant is to come away transformed. It’s wonderful to see every runner that crosses the finish line raise their arms in pride.
This source of inspiration is shared by the best trail runners on the planet. And while all those who cross the finish line are heroes that go down in history, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc races have revealed some extraordinary personalities:
Krissy Moehl (US)
A pioneer of the discipline and a true source of inspiration for her peers, she was the first woman to win the UTMB® in 2003, an achievement she repeated in 2009.
Dawa Sherpa (NP)
As the winner of the first edition in 2003, he is the original... the one who started it all. He remains a point of reference.
Marco Olmo (IT)
Winner in 2006 and 2007, he is a visionary, and his commitment and minimalism are representative of the spirit of the trail.
Tsuyoshi Kaburaki (JP) 12th in 2007 on his first participation, then 4th in 2008, he is the first Japanese entry to achieve a podium finish with a magnificent 3rd place in 2009.
Kilian Jornet (ES)
The first young runner (aged 20) to shine in ultra-running, he brought trail running into the modern era with professionalism, training and communication.
Scott Hawker (NZL)
« Scotty » Hawker showed the full extent of his talent at UTMB® 2019, breaking into the top 10 from the halfway point, to finish 3rd in Chamonix behind Xavier Thévenard and Pau Capell.
Miao Yao (CH)
At just 23 years old, this young Chinese woman won the 2018 edition of the CCC® with tremendous style. She finished the event 11th overall and set a new event record (11h57).
Hailing from Yunnan, Min Qi enjoyed a magnificent breakaway at the CCC®. Second across the finish line, he waited for his partner Miao Yao to take a finisher photo – a gesture that put them both on the map.
After winning the 2016 TDS® and finishing 3rd in the 2018 CCC®, he made his mark by winning the 2019 UTMB®. He planned his race meticulously, took maximum risks, and covered the 171 km alone from start to finish.
Tim Tollefson (US)
After a remarkable finish at the CCC® in 2015, Tim celebrated a 3rd place at the UTMB®. A fan of the event, he returned in 2017 and put in an incredible performance to finish in 3rd place behind Kilian and François.
Rory Bosio (US)
She is the only woman to have broken into the UTMB® top 10 overall, coming 7th in 2013. She has brought a «New Age» feel to the discipline.
Elisabeth Hawker (UK)
A trail runner in a league of her own, she is the only athlete to have won the UTMB® five times - and to have reached the podium six times!
François D’Haene (FR)
One of the world’s top trail runners, he won his first UTMB® in 2012, and his second in 2014. In 2017, he confirmed his status as one of the greats, winning the toughest edition in the history of the event. In 2021 he added a 4th victory to his palmares.
He embodies the popular trail craze and is the only athlete to have won all four categories: the UTMB® (2013, 2015, 2018), the CCC® (2010), the TDS® (2014) and the OCC (2016).
Caroline Chaverot (FR)
She won everything in 2016 (UTWT®, IAU World Trail Championships), and her UTMB® victory (20th overall) made her the darling of the general public.
After finishing 2nd in the 2012 edition of the UTMB®, the Italian added to her already remarkable list of achievements by winning the UTMB® in 2018.
He exploded onto the scene in 2018 with an unexpected 2nd place in the UTMB®. The Romanian bided his time, waiting for most of the favorites to yield to this edition’s demanding conditions, and then pounced into the leading group to finish on the podium.
The Polish runner demonstrated his talent in 2017 by finishing 2nd in the CCC®. And a year later won the TDS® in record time (13h24), beating some of the discipline’s top athletes.
A 3-time winner of the UTMB® (2019, 2021, 2023), she made history in 2023 by winning a hat-trick of ultra-trail events with 1st place finishes in the women’s category at the Western States, Hardrock and UTMB®. To date, no other runner, male or female, has won all three ultra-trails in the same season.
Arriving on the ultra-trail scene in 2017, Mathieu’s learning curve over this distance was vertical. «I just can’t believe it,» he said at the finish line. « This podium result at the UTMB® was a dream; I didn’t think it would happen so soon! »
In 2023, he won the UTMB® in 19 hours and 37 minutes, becoming the first American man to take the podium.
Every year, 10,000 runners gather at the foot of the Mont-Blanc massif to share an exceptional human and sporting adventure. For these men and women from all over the world, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is more than just a race.
Behind each participant, there is a story, a meaning that makes sense to them, and personal motivations. Whether single or married, working or retired, or a top-level athlete, they all have a good reason for taking part in the pinnacle of world trail running, whether it’s for the first time or out of passion for the event.
33 years old
Annecy (74, Haute-Savoie France)
Sabine is from Reims and runs a cryotherapy practice. She is getting ready to conquer the 171km HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc for the first time, alongside her husband.
This is an unprecedented challenge for a woman with a significant medical history — she had a stroke at 17, and suffers from muscular dystrophy, chronic Lyme disease and stage 5 endometriosis. Trail running provides Sabine with an incredible source of vitality and motivation, a discipline her husband encouraged her to take up ten years ago.
In 2023, they took part in the CCC® together, and this year — wearing their charity bibs with pride — they will be setting off on the UTMB®. It is an achievement she will be dedicating to her charity « L’enfance pétillante », which supports people facing illness or disability, and encourages them to take up sporting and charitable challenges.
Jason POILANE
34 years old
Cholet (49, Maine-et-Loire France)
Born with a heart defect, Jason always knew that one day the disease would catch up with him.
Having undergone open-heart surgery in 2021, he is now on the verge of realizing his dream: to run his first UTMB®. It’s a challenge he’s taken up for himself, but also for his wife and 2 daughters.
Determined and driven, he got back into running shortly after his operation and, within a year, was on the start line of his first 50K trail running challenge.
In 2023 he crossed the 100K mark, with the UTMB® in his sights. Selected for the 2024 edition Jason feels ready to take on this new challenge fueled by a desire to inspire others who, like him, have had to face up to illness.
40 years old
Schwarzach (Autriche)
A mother who has overcome many personal challenges and who trail runs as a form of selftherapy.
In 2011 she developed pre-eclampsia, and her daughter was born with five heart defects and severe bilateral hearing loss, undetected during pregnancy.
After a particularly difficult period — during which her daughter underwent surgery at five months, and she herself struggled with health problems — Manuela found her strength in running, initially on the road before developing a passion for trail running. In just a few years, she has gone from 30km races to ultratrails of over 100km.
For Manuela running has become a form of therapy, a way of regaining control and overcoming the powerlessness she felt in the face of her daughter’s illness. The mountains and forests are her refuge, where she finds inner peace. For her, taking part in the UTMB® represents the culmination of a journey of resilience and determination.
40 years old
Paris (75 – France) & Libourne (33, Gironde – France)
Head of content and social media at the RATP and a winegrower in Bordeaux, Thomas likes to wear many hats.
A father of 2, he has set himself the challenge of doing the UTMB® to celebrate his fortieth birthday.
A runner for as long as he can remember, and a trail runner for the last ten years or so, Thomas usually runs in aid of charities, so it was a natural choice for him to choose a charity bib for his first UTMB® , running for the Abbé Pierre Foundation.
With the support of his family and driven by a desire to work for the well-being of others, Thomas follows a rigorous training programme. He hopes to share this first 100M with his children, and dreams of crossing the finishing line with them in his arms.
22 years old
Tassin (69, Rhône – France)
Maximin is combining his guide training with his work as a fireman, so that next year he can join the police academy with the hope of one day becoming a mountain rescuer.
A native of Chamonix by adoption, he works on his stamina by ski touring, mountaineering and trail running.
In 2022, to celebrate his 20th birthday, he set off on the 170km Suisse Peaks race aiming to discover how his body works and how far he could push his mind. He finished 25th and continues to build on his success, trying his hand at the UTMB® this year with the aim of finishing in under 28 hours.

Each season, 3 events are designated UTMB® World Series Majors in the Americas, Europe and Asia/Oceania. At these events finishers double the number of Running Stones collected, and the top 10 in the various categories automatically qualify to take part in one of the UTMB® World Series Finals.

A Running Stone represents a chance of entering the draw for the UTMB® World Series Finals.
1 Running Stone collected within the last 24 months is required to enter the draw. Running Stones are cumulative and don’t expire. Each Running Stone represents an additional chance of being drawn.
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year, the mythic UTMB Mont-Blanc is the world’s most well-known and revered trail running event on the globe. In the heart of the Alps, the prestigious UTMB World Series Finals is held in 3 categories: the OCC (50K), CCC(100K) and UTMB (100M) every year at the end of August in Chamonix, France.
Having shared roots in the French Alps, UTMB® World Series and HOKA, a division of Deckers Brands, have announced a multi-year partnership. Driven by the same pioneering spirit that inspired HOKA’s founders to create revolutionary footwear designs at the foot of Mont Blanc, the performance footwear and apparel brand is now the Title Partner of HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc, UTMB® World Series Majors and the Premier Global Partner of the UTMB World Series, the world’s largest trail running circuit. Thanks to their natural synergies, these two iconic trail brands have the ambition to gather the global trail running community around the series and build the future of the discipline. A circuit, made up of the world’s best events, which will take runners to the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc and the UTMB® World Series Finals, through 2028. Throughout the partnership, HOKA will provide gear to volunteers across all UTMB® World Series Events, as well as runners at select Events. A new range of UTMB® World Series products has also been created and will be available at the official shop in the Ultra-Trail® Village in Chamonix, and also in the e-shop.

Näak is a sports nutrition reference for endurance and ultraendurance runners. Since 2023, the Canadian brand is the official nutrition and hydration partner of the UTMB® World Series and the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc. Available at aid stations, Näak products support runners on all races of the series.
23% of ultra-trail DNF are linked to gastrointestinal problems, affecting an average of 85% of participants. Faced with this alarming fact, Näak’s mission has always been to create the most efficient and eco-friendly nutrition for ultra-distance running.
The brand has developed a range of Ultra Energy™ products with complete nutrition for ultra runners, providing long-lasting energy to cross the finish line without gastrointestinal discomfort. Näak products are available in different forms: solid (bars, wafers), semiliquid (purees, gels) and liquid (drink mixes). A variety of flavors are out, both sweet and savoury, to reduce taste fatigue, another recurring problem among ultra trailers. Designed in collaboration with professional athletes such as Mathieu Blanchard and Marianne Hogan, Näak products meet the specific requirements and needs of ultra-running: longlasting energy, optimal hydration and efficient recovery.
The brand was born after former training partners, Minh-Anh Pham and William Walcker, turned co-founders, realizing that the nutritional products available on the market were often too sugary, leading to energy crashes and digestivel problems, compromising runners’ performance and enjoyment.
Näak, stands out for its innovation and committment, inspiring athletes around the world to push their limits through healthy, highperformance and environmentally-friendly nutrition.
In 2021, the company was B Corp certified, attesting of the highest standards of social and environmental impact. From the use of sustainable proteins to responsible sourcing, every Näak initiative aims to help athletes reach their full potential while preserving their playground.

The Communauté de Communes de la Vallée de Chamonix Mont-Blanc is making a major contribution, both financially and in terms of logistics, to this sporting event, which has become a global sporting benchmark. This race is organised in the middle of the wilderness, in an exceptional environment that we are keen to protect. To this end, the organisers of the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc, in conjunction with the local authorities, have implemented a number of measures to reduce the impact on the environment and pollution.
On a more general level, the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Valley has, for several years now, been resolutely committed to the fight against climate and environmental change, in cooperation with a number of institutional partners and its border neighbouring regions.
After being the first mountain local authority to adopt a voluntary Territorial Climate and Energy Plan
(PCET) in 2012, the Communauté de communes ambition was clearly stated in 2016: to make the Chamonix Valley a positive energy territory (TEPOS) for the benefit of its residents and guests.
The Chamonix Valley has an active policy for the development of public transport and active, low-carbon mobility. It encourages energy efficiency improvements in public and private buildings, with special support and substantial financial aid. The region is powered by 100% renewable electricity, its public buildings are heated by natural gas, it is building hydroelectric power stations and soon a methanisation plant, and it supports the Toits des Cimes village power station for the production of renewable energies...
In 2021, to guarantee, amplify and accelerate their commitment, the elected representatives of the Communauté de communes, with the support of ADEME, have embarked on the « Territoire Engagé
Transition Ecologique » programme, a management tool designed to bring together the local authority’s public policies and to ensure that the various players involved (elected representatives, departments, partners, etc.) focus more closely on the issues of climate, air and energy.
Since 2022, it has been working with all the Valley’s professionals in «transition workshops», to give them the tools and resources needed to promote the green transition.
The objectives of the Communauté de communes de la Vallée de Chamonix are clear: to drastically reduce the impact of our climate and the emissions of atmospheric pollutants in order to preserve this outstanding region and the quality of life of its inhabitants.

Great region for outdoor sports, Auvergne-RhôneAlpes hosts emblematic competitions each year which enliven and energize our territory just as they perpetuate this long sporting tradition which makes us proud.
The HOKA UTMB® Mont Blanc is the perfect illustration of this. An unmissable event for trail runners from around the world, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc brings together the world’s trail running elite and more than 10,000 passionate runners each year in Chamonix to take part in one of the event’s 8 races, including the finals of the UTMB® World Series circuit.
This extraordinary journey around Mont-Blanc allows trailers to cross valleys and passes in contact with the most beautiful peaks, in a unique alpine setting in the world.
The strength of this competition lies in its ability
to combine this sporting requirement at the heart of an exceptional natural setting. To practice trail running myself, I know to what extent it is a demanding discipline requiring both physical resistance and mental strength.
More than supporting a sporting event, this partnership is also a way for us to highlight values which are essential for me: work, courage, surpassing oneself and one’s limits. A symbolic dimension that the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc embodies to perfection.
We are proud to be partners of this international event which contributes to the influence of our territory and our athletes. I would like to thank the organizers and volunteers of this trail for the work essential to the success of this event.
All my encouragement to the competitors and excellent trail to all!
Savoie Mont-Blanc, as the world’s leading ski and outdoor destination, is proud to be a partner of one of the world’s biggest events, the « HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc » once again.
With varied relief between lakes and mountains and breathtaking landscapes, Savoie and HauteSavoie offer an ideal playground for trail running. Whether you are a long-distance expert, a peak line runner or a novice in nature running, the region offers over 8,000 km of tracks for all distances and all levels.
As a legendary race and a not-to-be-missed event for the world’s trail elite, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc promotes the region to a community of enthusiasts united around strong values such as freedom, surpassing oneself, sharing and respect for nature.
Not easy to resist to the temptation if it were not that of a nut salami, one of the numerous and mouthwatering products of this shop in a rustic setting, saturated with meats, local cheese and a large spread of local produce. If all the same you manage to be reasonable by passing in front of the first Payot refuge, a few steps further, what will you do face with the second? The mountain air digs such a strong hole in the stomach, and the alpine honeys are so delicious, the jams so tasty and the fruity alcohols so intoxicating!
One of the most emblematic crossborder cooperations in the European mountain regions, the Espace MontBlanc brings together 50 municipalities in Haute-Savoie, Savoie, the Aosta Valley and Valais to work on a joint project for the sustainable and balanced management of the MontBlanc Massif and its valleys. The collaboration established with the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is based on the Ethical Partnership Contract signed in 2007 with the aim of reducing the impact of the race on the environment. In particular, the financial support provided helps to promote the use of public transport to follow the race, in order to reduce emissions. This successful partnership is part of the action programme that the Espace Mont-Blanc is putting in place to ensure the consistent management of this crossborder area, which is subject to many issues and constraints, while meeting the challenge of balancing the essential requirements of protection with those of socio-economic development while respecting the mountain resources and identity.
From the majestic 4,000-metre summits, sparkling glaciers and idyllic mountain lakes up on high to the Mediterranean flora, sweeping vineyards and lateral valleys full of authentic character down by the main Rhône valley, Valais is a land of contrasts. With its exceptionally sunny climate, Valais is heaven for anyone with a taste for adventure, and its mountains are the ultimate playground for all who enjoy outdoor activities. The choice is vast, for everyone from athletes who wish to develop their performance to holidaymakers drawn by the thrilling natural setting.
During summer, the region offers spectacular running trails for enthusiasts who wish to push their limits. Challenging climbs, narrow ridges, historical mountain passes: whichever trails you choose, you are guaranteed breathtaking panoramic views.
The Aosta Valley with its four 4.000 m. peaks (Mont-Blanc, Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso), natural parks, alpine lakes, landscapes and welcoming mountain huts is an alpine region where sportmen and mountain enthousiasts can find their perfect playground.
It is a region situated in the heart of Europe, nestled amongst three countries (Italy, France, Switzerland), whose traditions and culture contribute to a strong, peculiar and wellpreserved Alpine identity.
In this context, the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is much more than a sporting event for the Aosta Valley: it is an opportunity to work in partnership with its French and Swiss friends and to raise awareness of its natural heritage.
« HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc is a perfect combination of values linked to sport, culture and nature of our lands. It is a unique sporting adventure ; it is an incredible bridge that unites athletes from all over the world. Live with passion every moment of this beautiful journey that year after year keeps strengthening the relations between those who live around the Mont Blanc region ». Roberto Rota, Courmayeur.
Every summer Courmayeur lives up to its reputation as a major center for trail and ultra-trail running, with many competitions held at high altitude on the mountain trails winding their way around the highest summit in Europe. From July to September, Courmayeur hosts the most exciting challenges of the season. An incredibly rich trail running calendar includes the Gran Trail Courmayeur, the UYN Vertical Courmayeur Mont Blanc, the UTMB® and the Tor des Géants®. These races take place amid spectacular scenery at the foothills of Mont Blanc, with stunning mountain views and breath-taking natural beauty. Courmayeur will host the prestigious UTMB®, the race that attracts the international trail running élite: of the 8 scheduled competitions, 4 directly involve Courmayeur as the starting point of the TDS®, the CCC®, the ETC and the YCC® and as a key stage on the route of the UTMB®.
