WELCOME TO THE 21ST EDITION OF THE HOKA UTMB MONT-BLANC!
We are delighted to welcome you to this new edition of the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc. Special thanks to all the volunteers, partners, service providers, local authorities, tourism and mountain professionals, mountain hostellers and alpacists who make this event possible. And of course we’d like to thank you, the runners, for joining us this year to make this week such an incredible adventure. Your passion and commitment are the driving forces behind this great human adventure.
EMOTIONS
Since 2003, the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc has brought together thousands of trail and mountain enthusiasts. It continues to live on with the same passion and the same values, building year after year an event that is ever more collective and vibrant. An event where the human element is at the very core of our mission and commitments. For the 21st time, we’re gathering to celebrate this extraordinary sport and its spirit of personal accomplishment, solidarity and respect. This week is a festival where the young and old, amateurs and professionals from all walks of life can experience together the thrill of the sport and discover the beauty of our region.
We often say that the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc is a small round-the-world tour, a certain idea of adventure, where we learn to remain humble through adversity, courageous in our efforts and selfless in our success. A sporting challenge, but above all a quest for ourselves, where each race gives us the chance to reconnect with ourselves and with each other through values that are important to us. To those of you who have been looking forward to this unique moment for months or even years, we wish a memorable time.
TERRITORY
For 21 years, the people of the Mont Blanc region have been putting their know-how and expertise at the service of this event. It’s thanks to their skills and knowledge of the region that the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc is a successful logistical event, bringing 3 countries, 18 towns, 7 valleys and 800 km of trails to life over a one-week period. In each of these areas, the energy of these men and women makes it possible every year to welcome 10,000 runners and 20,000 accompanying persons in ideal conditions. They all share a common goal: to pass on the values and heritage they are so proud of.
SHARING
The HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc is an event that celebrates sharing and unity through sport. Although we are deeply rooted in our region, with three quarters of the participants coming from France and Europe, we are equally proud to welcome 118 different nationalities. For the duration of the race, every step taken on the Mont-Blanc trails is a moment of universal sharing. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a passionate amateur, you share the same challenge, the same joys and the same tests.
RESPECT
Respect for the people and the environment, mutual aid, fairness and solidarity are the fundamental values that drive the organisation and operations of the HOKA UTMB MontBlanc. These values are translated into action throughout the year, both locally and internationally. Respect for the regions and towns crossed, respect for participants and volunteers, protection of the environment and the runners’ health, development of charity initiatives.
HEALTH
Your health and safety are paramount to us. Every year, we mobilise more than 2,500 volunteers and a wide range of health professionals: 30 doctors, 60 nurses, 60 first-aiders, as well as 90 physiotherapists and chiropodists. These experts, who are essential during the event, also attend specialised training courses to meet the unique requirements of trail running in a natural environment. We strongly believe that each runner is the main player in his or her own health, so we’re counting on you to take the necessary precautions and be mindful of your well-being throughout the race.
COMMITMENT
Our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint is a priority that unites all our team throughout the year. During this week, we need all of you runners to be part of this effort and make a difference. Once again this year, we’re doing everything we can to ensure that you don’t need a car to get to and from the event locations. We’re investing half a million euros in our UTMB Mobility transport plan. In 2023, we will have carried more than 13,000 people in the UTMB Bus to reduce road congestion and preserve the peaceful nature of the sites. Let’s be even more of a crowd in 2024, we’re counting on you to take up the challenge!
SUSTAINABILITY
This year, we are stepping up our efforts in the area of sustainability by introducing two 100% vegetarian catering areas, which are being tested as a pilot project. We’re giving priority to environmentally responsible sourcing, with 80% of our supplies made from regional and sustainable products, so as to limit transport and encourage the involvement of local producers.
As a key player in the recycling of organic waste, we have set up an advanced bio-waste collection system, with six actively managed collection points, handling almost 700 kg of organic waste. And since last year, we’ve been providing 100% plastic bottle-free refreshments.
PROTECTION
Protecting our natural environment is an absolute priority to us. Throughout the year, our team is actively involved in a number of conservation campaigns. In partnership with local associations, we work to restore and maintain the trails, ensuring their long-term existence and beauty for future generations. During the week of the event, our Environmental Ambassadors, trained by ASTERS (conservatoire des espaces naturels and manager of the nature reserves in Haute-Savoie), cover more than 800 km of trails to raise awareness and help participants to respect and protect nature, and to collect any waste found along the way.
SOMMET MONDIAL DU TRAIL
Finally
We invite you, both participants and visitors, to fully embrace the spirit of Leave No Trace. Please respect our flora and fauna, but also all the privatelyowned property and farmland you cross, manage all your waste and leave nature as you found it, for all to enjoy.
We wish you all a spectacular race and an memorable experience during this 21st edition of the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc.

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND CHAMONIX MONT-BLANC
This ultra-endurance pedestrian event leads participants on a large tour of Mont-Blanc (300km and 25000m of ascent), taking high routes, without way-markers on the ground, which necessitates the sense of orientation on and off paths. Each year the route is different to allow for the discovery of the richness and diversity of paths in France, Italy and Switzerland within the Mont-Blanc massif.

RACE-BIBS
REGULATIONS
Race-bibs are given to each runner upon presentation of: • A valid photo ID
• The backpack that you will be using during the race, so that we can attach the gps tracker to it. You must indicate where you will pick up your bib in your Runner Account online prior to the Event. The race-bib must be worn on the chest or stomach and must remain permanently and completely visible during the whole race. It must always be placed on top of all clothing and must not be positioned on a leg or on the pack. The runner’s name and partner’s logos must not be altered or hidden. The bib is the pass to access the shuttles, buses, aid stations, medical points, rest rooms, showers, bag drop-off or pick-up areas... The bib is only withdrawn if the runner refuses to comply with the race director’s decision. If the runner abandons the race, the bib is cut and deactivated..
PORTABLE CUP
Designed to avoid wastage of disposable cups throughout the race, each runner must provide their own, with a minimum capacity of 15cl. Attention, gourds/water bottles or water flasks with screw/clip top are not accepted as beakers!
«BRING YOUR OWN UTENSILS»
The organization will not distribute any disposable cutlery, beakers/cups or bowls at aid stations and refreshment posts. You are asked to carry your own utensils if you wish to eat hot food (soup, pasta).
DROP BAGS
1 bag for personal belongings in Courmayeur. During the race, it is mandatory to retrieve your sack in Courmayeur and then drop it off again in the appropriate area before leaving so that it can be returned to Chamonix. (Attention: no spare bags in Champex) Neither walking poles, nor fragile or valuable objects, are to be placed in these bags. Only the bags provided by the organization will be allowed. Any delay in their repatriation is due to logistical constraints. A bag can be returned after the runner arrives in Chamonix, in particular in the case of abandonment early in the race. Thank you for being patient and respecting the work of the volunteers.
ARE YOU SPONSORED?
C’est très bien, mais vous ne pouvez le faire apparaître That’s great but you can strictly only display it on your clothes and equipment used during the race. No flags in the name of X, or banners for Y.
CONTROL
Each runner will be supplied with 2 electronic chips and a bracelet. Certain check points are automatic, others are manual. Unexpected controls will be carried out by the organization. Runners who are not permanently in possession of their chips and wrist-bands will be penalized.
ENVIRONNEMENT
Help us to conserve the natural surroundings; do not drop your litter along the race route. We all share the responsibility of keeping our play-ground clean. Do not forget to carry bag in which to put your rubbish between two rubbish-bin points.
RESPECTING THE REGULATIONS AND THE RACE STEWARDS
As in previous years, the volunteers are there to help you, but also to ensure that the rules are respected. Among them are the Commissaires de Course (race stewards). Some of them have specific duties concerning the immediate application of real time penalties due if the rules are not respected. It is important to understand that the penalties which entail a stop are applied during the race! For the race leaders this represents a possible descent in the ranking, and the slowest runners this could mean missing the next time barrier. The Race Stewards have the right to check your mandatory equipment at the start and at any point along the route. If you are missing an element of the mandatory safety equipment
(no minimum water reserve of a minimum of 1 liter, no waterproof jacket with hood, no torch, no survival blanket, no mobile/cell phone) you will be immediately disqualified.

Please note, however, that the withdrawal procedure described above also applies to runners that have the application.

CUT-OFF TIMES
CUT-OFF TIMES
The organisation does not provide repatriation by car or 4x4 (except for medical reasons and on the decision of the medical officer or head of station). Runners who abandon at a mountain station must return as quickly as possible and by their own means to the nearest repatriation point where the organisation’s buses are available.
These are calculated to enable participants to reach the finish in the maximum time allowed. They are indicated on the various documents provided. The cut-off time indicated is the deadline by which competitors must leave the checkpoint. The organisers may modify the cut-off times for safety reasons. Runners will be notified by SMS and/or email. No runner will be allowed to leave a checkpoint behind the sweepers.

For better night vision, the route markers have a yellow reflective element that will illuminate when your headlamp shines on it. In 2017, the organising team also introduced green markers. These are a reminder that you are in a sensitive natural area.

REST AND SHOWERS
You can only take a hot shower at the finish. On the course, showers are only available on medical advice. The rest areas provided by the organisers will be strictly reserved for runners who are racing or who have just finished. Under no circumstances will they provide overnight accommodation. Access to the rest area will only be possible for runners who have their own sleeping bag liner.
Unless you are injured, you must not leave the trail other than at a checkpoint. In this case, you MUST notify the checkpoint supervisor, who will permanently cancel your race number and collect your rucksack chip. The runner must keep their cancelled race number as it serves as an access pass to the shuttles, buses, meals and treatment rooms. Repatriation will be decided in consultation with the station manager, in accordance with the following general rules:

MANDATORY EQUIPMENT
Why is mandatory equipment required
During the month of August in the Mont-Blanc area, the weather can get very hot (more than 30°C), or very cold (up to -10°C experienced above 2000m), with rain, hail or even snow. Your equipment must be suitable for confronting all types of conditions and allow you to spend one or two nights outdoor, on the race route, depending on your speed of progress. In case of an incident, your equipment must also allow you to wait for the rescue team in sufficiently safe conditions.
You must carry the mandatory equipment with you during the whole race - from start to finish - or you will be penalized. Race stewards may check your equipment at any time during the race.
Don’t forget that the equipment we request includes an essential list of basic items that each trail runner must adapt according to their own abilities. We highly recommend you to test it during training sessions under different conditions and to carry everything you need with you. See
Additional kits required depending on weather conditions
The “hot weather” and “cold weather” kits are an essential part of the mandatory equipment. Depending on the weather conditions, the organization may ask participants to carry some additional mandatory equipment items. In this case, runners will be informed before the opening of the race pack collection for their race. Each participant must then present their mandatory equipment - including the additional kit activated by the organization - to get their race bib.
Choose clothes that allow good protection in the mountains against cold, wind and snow, and therefore provide greater safety and ensure a better performance. All clothing must be the runner’s size and must not be altered after leaving the factory.
You must carry your equipment in a bag that we will tag when you receive your bib and you cannot change it during the race.
SAFETY
ENVIRONMENT & WEATHER
The HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc races are all races which take place in open country, in mountainous terrain, with some remote areas (roads, telecommunications…) with weather conditions which can change very fast even at the end of August (snow, hail, fog, heat (>30°) or intense cold (<-10°), violent wind).
Advice along the route :
• Do not stop at high points
• If you lose sight of the way-markers: turn round and go back to the previous marker
• Stay on the paths
EQUIPMENT
Some common sense reminders for facing difficult weather conditions:
- Anticipate the cold as well as extreme heat
- Don’t wait to shiver before covering yourself up
- Don’t change in full wind: anticipate or wait to be sheltered
- Protect yourself against the sun
Walking poles: watch what you do with your poles particularly at the beginning of the race when there is a high human density. Do not wear the wrist straps on the descents: in case of a rough fall wrist-straps prevent the suitable use of the hands (injuries to shoulders, wrists, forearms or more seriously the head).
EATING & DRINKING
Hydration and the consumption of energizing snacks must be adapted to the meteorological conditions and enriched in salt throughout the effort. Keep a good balance between slow and rapid release sugars.
FATIGUE AND VIGILANCE
Rest areas are available at aid stations for a few moments of sleep. It is dangerous to stop and sleep alone outdoor. Fatigue and the lack of vigilance could cause an accident. Run within your limits (above all over the first part of the race course) saving your energy for later to overcome difficult situations which may arise, such as a sudden change of weather conditions.
COMPULSORY PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE
To ensure peace of mind at the start of your HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc race, we remind you that you must have personal accident insurance to cover any search and evacuation costs in France, Italy and Switzerland. Helicopter repatriation costs between 800 and 3,000 euros. Every year, runners get caught out because they were not sufficiently prepared. Such insurance can be taken out with the organisation of your choice.
Since 2022, UTMB Group has been offering repatriation assistance insurance.
For €49 a year, you can take out insurance that guarantees worldwide cover for rescue, repatriation and medical care (including helicopter rescue). Sign up here:
Before the start of the race, don’t forget to add these emergency numbers in you mobile phone
LIVETRAIL
The application is a reference interface for your safety, while providing you with invaluable information about the competition (real-time tracking of your race and that of your friends). In the event of an SOS, the app lets you text your GPS position directly to the organisers. This saves precious time when it comes to taking care of you. Please note, however, that it is not a substitute for a call to Race HQ. A mobile phone is compulsory with the international option activated during the race, and with a working battery. Under no circumstances should you put your phone in aeroplane mode, as we need to be able to contact you before, during and after the race. For runners who will be spending more than 15 hours on the trail, it is advised to bring an external battery.
Check that the emergency number you have given is the contact information of the person in your entourage who should be alerted in the event of a problem. Very important: To improve your care in the event of an incident, check that you have entered your contact number for the duration of the race in your runner’s area. You can update it up until the start of your race.
It is compulsory not to leave a person in difficulty alone.
RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
SIGN-POSTING
In order to better understand the natural environment that you are crossing, we have created a specific sign-posting system. So, as you approach a herd/flock of animals or a naturally fragile zone, you will be informed by the sign-posts.
HERDS/FLOCKS
On approaching these zones, pay particular attention to your behaviour so as not to frighten the animals: don’t wave your arms or poles, don’t shout and slow down.
POLES
Hiking poles are forbidden in certain fragile sectors to avoid degradation of the site. These areas are marked by specific signs.
FENCES
Certain routes cross through fenced pastures, please would you close any gates behind you.
FRAGILE SECTORS
You are requested to stay on the main paths so as to protect the nature around you, avoid aggravating the erosion or disturbing the protected flora and fauna.
RESPECT OF THE PROTECTED NATURAL AREAS
The HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc races cross protected natural zones and areas:
5 NATURE RESERVES
A nature reserve is an area which constitutes a reservoir of remarkable and fragile bio-diversity. In the Haute Savoie, they are managed by the association ASTERS (the Conservatory of the Haute Savoie’s natural areas).
6 NATURA 2000 SITES
Natura 2000 is a European program creating a network of land and marine sites identified for the rarity or the fragility of the wild animal or plant species, and their habitats.
1 FRANC DISTRICT
In the Swiss territory the Franc districts have the aim of the protection and conservation of rare and threatened wild mammals and birds as well as the protection and conservation of their habitats.
NO MORE PLASTIC AT THE AID STATIONS
In order to reduce the use of plastic by runners and volunteers at the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc, and thus limit your carbon footprint and waste production, the organisers will no longer be using disposable cutlery, cups or bowls at the race bases and feed stations (including for volunteers). In 2023, there will be no plastic bottles at the refreshment points. You will still find sparkling water, cola, still water and energy products, but these will be made by individual soft drinks machines.
Remember to separate your rubbish at the refreshment points. Organic waste such as leftover bars, fruit, fruit skins, leftover sausages, etc. should be disposed of in the bins provided. Try to take with you only what you will eat. Let’s avoid wasting food together.
