Mobility guide - Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc 2023

The Mont-Blanc massif is a fragile natural setting that requires our fullest attention. To help protect it, we are counting on everyone’s commitment. We have a duty to do everything we can to minimise our impact.

Transport accounts for more than 80% of the carbon footprint of the Dacia UTMB® MontBlanc. We have always been committed to preserving our environment and minimising our greenhouse gas emissions, and to this end, each year we put in place a mobility plan that provides a collective solution to facilitating travel around the Mont-Blanc region.

This plan will be considerably strengthened in 2023 and includes the introduction of a brandnew car-sharing platform for travel to the event.

This mobility guide is available to all participants including runners, companions, volunteers, partners, and spectators, to help you organise your travel before, during and after the event.

You’ll find targeted information on following the runners using the UTMB® Bus service and all the race-by-race details.

- to avoid the use of more than 5,000 individual vehicles during the event - to provide a collective solution that relieves congestion in the valleys and facilitates travel throughout the Mont Blanc region - to encourage as many people as possible to use public transport - to reduce air pollution

In 2023, our aim is to transport 100% of runners to the startline and 100% of companions who wish to follow the race.

Restricted access for cars but a strengthened bus service so you don’t miss a moment of the race!

PARK-AND-RIDE AND LONG-TERM CAR PARKS

You can leave your car in the car park for one or more days and take advantage of public transport.

Our aim is to significantly reduce the number of cars in the valley during the event in order to limit the impact on the local population and on the environment.

To achieve this, in 2023, over 60% of the key points along the route will be closed to traffic - only the UTMB® Buses will have access. So don’t hesitate, use public transport!

Runners are invited to leave their cars behind and to take the UTMB® Bus to the start of their race.

To protect our Alpine valleys, runners and companions can no longer be transported by car during the races. Only public transport should be used. To ensure that the races run smoothly, to be respectful of local residents and to allow the UTMB ® Bus to move around properly, it will not be possible to drive or park in many of the places listed below.

Due to traffic and parking difficulties, and in order to reduce your carbon footprint, we strongly recommend you do not rent a car and use shuttle buses to come to the Mont-Blanc region. You can easily use public transport to get around the Chamonix valley and to follow the races.

The train or bus doesn’t meet your needs?

We understand that car travel remains a more flexible and practical means of transport in many circumstances. However, we strongly recommend that you optimize the number of people you transport (no less than 3!) by grouping together with friends if necessary, or by offering your available places on our car-sharing platform provided by our partner DACIA.

COVOITURAGE.UTMB.WORLD

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, be aware that traffic and parking conditions in our Alpine valleys are very complicated. What’s more, many roads and parking lots will be closed during the races. But it’s very easy to get around by public transportation. That’s why we urge you to park your car for the duration of your stay at your accommodations or in one of the long-term parking lots we provide, and to opt to use public transportation during the entirety of your stay.

FIND YOUR ECO-FRIENDLY WAY AROUND

Driving and parking in the Chamonix valley is very challenging, but it’s very easy to get about using the public transport provided by the Communauté de Communes de la Vallée de Chamonix Mont-Blanc!

If you’re coming for the day, park your car in one of our park-and-ride facilities (free shuttle bus to the centre of Chamonix) and then use public transport.

If you’re staying in the valley, park your car for the duration of your stay at your accommodation or in one of our long-term car parks.

Then use public transport free of charge using your guest card.

This card will give you several advantages, including free travel on buses and the SNCF network for domestic journeys, including between Servoz and Vallorcine.

TOURIST ACCOMMODATION: The card will be given to you free of charge by your accommodation provider on arrival. Don’t hesitate to ask for it.

FOR YOUR JOURNEY IN FRANCE, SWITZERLAND AND ITALY BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE EVENT,

To get around the Chamonix valley, the local authority provides a comprehensive public transport network (see previous page). If you want to travel further afield, in Haute-Savoie or Savoie, think train (for example to Saint-Gervais), bus (for example to Les Contamines) or carpool (for example to Savoie). MOVING AROUND IN ITALY

If you wish to discover the Italian side of the mont Blanc, there are several bus routes running between Chamonix and Courmayeur every day. You can find timetables and book your tickets either through PROTECT OUR WINTERS , or directly on the regular companies’ websites, such as here: SAT-MONTBLANC.COM

Once there, you can access Val Veni or Val Ferret using the free shuttles provided by the local authority (car access is not permitted) AOSTA.ARRIVA.IT

MOVING AROUND IN SWITZERLAND

To visit the charming villages on the Swiss side, the best option is to take the train to Martigny or Orsières (from Chamonix free access to Vallorcine with the Chamonix valley guest card, then timetable and fares on MONT-BLANCEXPRESS.CH. Once in Martigny or Orsières, you can easily reach the villages of Champex Lac or La Fouly using the canton of Valais buses run by TMR WWW.TMRSA.CH

In 2022, the Dacia UTMB mont-Blanc innovated by creating the BASE CAMPS, zones accessible free of charge with the UTMB Bus pass so you can wait in the warmth.

IN 2023, WE OFFER EVEN MORE COMFORT WITH OUR BASE CAMP!

Located along the course of the UTMB, CCC and TDS, the BASE CAMP are accessible day and/or night, by showing your shuttle pass.

The Base Camps are located close to the feed stations and are signposted. Nearby, you’ll find refreshment points where you can eat and drink a hot beverage (at your cost).

And along the way, you’ll meet our mobility ambassadors who can give you all the information you need!

MOVING AROUND DURING THE RACE

CREWING AND ASSISTANCE

Assistance is only permitted at certain aid stations (*). You may only be assisted by one person at a time, and only in the area specifically reserved for this purpose, on presentation of the “Assistance” ticket and at the discretion of the station manager (the rest of the aid station is strictly reserved for runners).

The “Assistance” tickets are given to the runner in the race number envelope. The runner is then free to give each ticket to the person of his/her choice.

1 TICKET PER ASSISTANCE STATION.

1 TICKET = 1 PERSON.

Your assistant has the right to one piece of hand luggage (a bag with a maximum volume of 30 liters) in which to transport the necessary products (food, clothing…). Assistance provided by a professional team, or any other pro, medical or paramedical – even if they are relatives - is strictly forbidden. This is to ensure equity amongst all the runners, and to prevent aid stations from becoming a Formula 1 pitstops. This doesn’t mean that your family and friends cannot support you along the way. Simply, so that everything runs smoothly, you are asked to respect the instructions given by the aid station team leader.

CHILDREN

Due to the possibility of waiting during the night and the possibility of bad weather, the UTMB Bus are forbidden for children beyond 3 years old. For the families with young children, we recommend to pick up free passes at the Info point located in front of the Lycée in chamonix (Promenade du Fori).

ANIMALS

Pets are prohibited in the UTMB Bus.

ACCOMPANYING ALONG THE ROUTE

Again, to ensure equality between competitors, whatever their position, it is forbidden to be accompanied during all or part of the race by a person who is not a participant, outside of the zones of tolerance which are clearly marked in proximity to the aid stations. This authorizes short walks for family and friends but forbids pace setters. Race stewards are positioned at several points along the route and can give real time penalties if the regulations are not respected.

RESPECT OF THE ENVIRONMENT

SIGN-POSTING

In order to better understand the natural environment that you are crossing, we have created a specific sign-posting system. So, as you approach a herd/flock of animals or a naturally fragile zone, you will be informed by the sign-posts.

HERDS/FLOCKS

On approaching these zones, pay particular attention to your behaviour so as not to frighten the animals: don’t wave your arms or poles, don’t shout and slow down.

POLES

Hiking poles are forbidden in certain fragile sectors to avoid degradation of the site. These areas are marked by specific signs.

GATES

Certain routes cross through fenced pastures, please would you close any gates behind you.

FRAGILE SECTORS

You are requested to stay on the main paths so as to protect the nature around you, avoid aggravating the erosion or disturbing the protected flora and fauna.

The Dacia UTMB® Mont-Blanc races cross protected natural zones and areas:

5 Nature Reserves

A nature reserve is an area which constitutes a reservoir of remarkable and fragile bio-diversity. In the Haute Savoie, they are managed by the association ASTERS (the Conservatory of the Haute Savoie’s natural areas).

6 Natura 2000 sites

Natura 2000 is a European program creating a network of land and marine sites identified for the rarity or the fragility of the wild animal or plant species, and their habitats.

1 Franc district

In the Swiss territory the Franc districts have the aim of the protection and conservation of rare and threatened wild mammals and birds as well as the protection and conservation of their habitats.

CAN I TAKE THE UTMB BUS WITH MY DOG?

Pets are prohibited in the UTMB Bus.

CAN I TAKE THE VALLEY PUBLIC TRANSPORT WITH MY UTMB BUS PASS?

No. The UTMB Bus pass only gives you access to the organization buses.

CAN I TAKE THE TRAIN?

You must present your guest card given by your accommodation provider.

You must present your free pass - download it

CAN I TAKE THE UTMB BUS WITH MY BIKE?

Yes, you will need to plan to dismantle your bike and store it in an appropriate bag. However, each bus has a different cargo hold. It is possible that the bus you wish to take does not have the capacity to load your bike.

CAN I TAKE THE UTMB BUS WITH MY KIDS?

Due to the possibility of waiting during the night and the possibility of bad weather, the UTMB Bus are forbidden for children beyond 3 years old. For the families with young children, we recommend to pick up free passes at the Info point located in front of the Lycée in chamonix (Promenade du Fori).

HOW LONG IS THE PASS VALID FOR?

Each pass is valid only during the corresponding race (e.g. Pass UTMB from Friday to Sunday).

IS THE PASS VALID FOR ONE PERSON ONLY?

Each transport pass is nominative and can only be used by one person.

IS THERE A LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF BOOKINGS PER PERSON OR NOT?

No. However, we recommend that everyone is reasonable and does not book more than 5 travel passes per person.

CAN I CANCEL MY PACKAGE IF MY RUNNER CANCELS HIS/HER RACE?

es, if your runner does not come to the race, you can cancel your UTMB® Bus package by sending an email to montblanc@service.utmb. world.
