WELCOME

We began work on this magazine back in early December of last year without the slightest inclination of the state we would find ourselves in four short months later. As I write this letter I find myself – more likely than not, just like yourself – sequestered at home, waiting for the days when we can gather in groups larger than ten, go out to eat at our favorite restaurants, and simply run up to a friend and give them a big ol’ bear hug. Since gathering on a regular basis either at the office or someone else’s home is ill-advised, we had to get creative with the completion of this issue just like the educators and businesses throughout the world. That includes our annual magazine committee portrait which you see above. While it may not be as polished as the rest of the photography you’re accustomed to seeing in these pages, it was no less fun to put together. And frankly, took a lot less time than our usual group portraits. To our couples looking for inspiration for the perfect Northwest Montana wedding who are facing the uncertainty of what the next days, weeks, or months will hold: Whether you’re wrestling with decisions of scaling back your plans, postponing into the fall or later, or just beginning to plan your 2021 or 2022 wedding, there are no better wedding professionals than those found in our vendor directory. To the amazing wedding professionals that make up our membership: I could not be more proud to consider you colleagues and friends. To witness the weekly video calls as we navigate these challenging times together and brainstorm ideas to help one another – and our couples – is truly humbling, and I thank you. I was the adventure seeker, and he was the grounded, stable one. We complemented one another perfectly and fell in love quickly. Our relationship has taken us traveling around the country and the world; it has been an amazing adventure from day one. We used Montana, the breathtaking state we live in, as inspiration for our day. We made our wedding feel personal by ensuring that everything – from the setting in the Montana mountains, to the mix of country and rap music – was reflective of who we are as individuals and as a couple.”

We were able to truly enjoy the days around the wedding because we were able to focus on the people around us. We knew that everything was taken care of, and it was really special to be able to enjoy time with family who had come from so far away to celebrate with us. “We’re both from Omaha, and like most people from Omaha, we wanted to get engaged and married somewhere a little more scenic. We got engaged in New York City after a series of unfortunate events, from missing our roof-top lounge reservation, to a broken dress zipper and blistered feet. Scott proposed at a Holiday Inn with ‘Wild N’ Out’ playing in the background. In his proposal he mentioned that he wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else but there in that moment with me. Other than the fact that my feet were in so much pain, I felt the same way. Our wedding was perfect because it focused on the celebration of this new, beautiful chapter in our lives. The entire wedding consisted of us and our three witnesses (one of which was our photographer, Elsa). Getting married in such a beautiful place, and staying in a tiny home at St. Mary’s Village, truly made the day unforgettable. We wouldn’t have done it any other way! Our advice is to just elope, it is so much easier! Also, pick a beautiful location like the mountains of Montana.” mymontanawedding.com

We chose Montana because it was a state we hadn’t visited yet, and after some research, Glacier National Park seemed perfect! We chose to have our immediate family and two close friends with us, which helped us live in the moment and enjoy what truly means the most to us: love and family.”

“We knew we wanted a big, traditional wedding – a special destination event that we could share with our family and our closest friends – so I took two years to plan it making sure all the details were perfect. We loved every minute of it, and Whitefish was the perfect place for us! I knew I wanted an elegant hotel winter wedding, and the Lodge at Whitefish Lake was the perfect place to have it. “I’ve lived in seven different states at this point in my life, and when asked where I’m from I will always say Montana. Born and raised, proudly. My husband and his family are from Virginia, generation over generation. We met while in college in Virginia so a lot of our close friends are from Virginia as well. Many had never been to the West Coast, and Montana? Even fewer. I wanted a wedding that had Pinterest-level standards, but I knew I wanted to have something memorable that wouldn’t fade or change with time. I wanted something that everyone would be able to say was significant for many reasons. Since Aaron, his family, and our friends had never been to Montana, it was a no-brainer. The invites, the dress, the details – yes, they make an impression. But what will people remember from our wedding? I’d hope the jaw-dropping mountains, the sense of peace, and the ability to explore and experience a new place together. Montana is uniquely so many things; I hope that our guests took home something worth remembering.”

I pictured luxurious textures and rich colors that celebrate the beauty of darkness. The result was a gathering with a strong color palette, highlighted by a gorgeous illusion lace bridal gown from Mimi’s Bridal. My advice to brides currently perusing Pinterest or bridal magazines is to not be afraid of color. So many brides are scared to include bold colors in their wedding, but if you use the right color tones and in the right amounts, the color won’t overpower your wedding.” –Repeat Boutique & Design

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are both commercial airline pilots and have spent many years traveling and exploring all corners of the earth. Since we have a love for travel, we wanted to have our guests find their names on a world map and sit at tables marked with a country that we traveled to together. I started flying out of Glacier Park International Airport some years ago, and when we decided to get married at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake I thought it would be fun to surprise our guests and arrive to the wedding via float plane. Along with my old instructor, we landed on Whitefish Lake and docked the float plane right by the ceremony location! It was a total surprise to our guests, and we pulled it off without a hitch. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our wedding was all about family, sharing our love for each other, and the state we live in with our loved ones. We picked Grouse Mountain Lodge for its beautiful lodge feel and its proximity to Glacier National Park. All of my family came from out of state, and I wanted them to enjoy the beauty of Montana. We incorporated the feel of the mountains in our decor and had huckleberry mojitos as a signature drink! I wore the same headpiece my mom wore on her wedding day, and that was truly so special.

I would encourage brides to enjoy the ride and take it all in as you go. Not everything will go perfectly and that’s okay. My veil fell off as Brandon and I were walking out of the ceremony down the aisle. Oops! We just grabbed it and laughed. These things happen. We really couldn’t have done it without Trisha and Patti from Repeat Boutique & Design – they made it so stress-free, and we are so thankful!”

“Before I met Stein I didn’t own a pair of hiking boots. He is a true Montana boy who has taken me on so many adventures – we fell in love at national parks all over the world, from the Alps to the Canadian Rockies. We always knew we did not want a traditional wedding. I spent more time trying to find the perfect white hat (my mother wore a hat at her wedding) than I did planning, and I had my wedding shoes (Danner hiking boots) picked out before I found the perfect dress. We had beautiful blue skies in September, but we had an interesting time with some gusty winds! My hat ended up flying down a cliff and we met the nicest stranger who went and retrieved it for me. We were so lucky to use Carrie Ann as our photographer. Because she is local, she knows all of the details we didn’t know – from helping us pick a date around road closures on Going To the Sun Road, to the time of day to avoid crowds. We would never have known the ins and outs had we brought a photographer from our area. My best advice is to do what you want and don’t let anyone pressure you into doing your wedding any other way than what your dream is, whether it’s on a mountain with just a witness, or in front of hundreds of guests.” mymontanawedding.com

“Just before our first dance, the power went out throughout West Glacier and was out for two hours. We had to improvise. One of Chris’ best friends had a ukulele with him so our first dance was to him playing ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ by Frank Sinatra while our wedding party, friends, and family gathered and sang for us. Although it wasn’t planned, it turned out absolutely perfect. It was one of the most memorable moments from the wedding, and it meant the world to us to have everyone come together and be a part of our first dance. For a wedding, you spend all this time planning and worrying about every little piece of the schedule. There are almost always unplanned events that will arise so just embrace them. It will go by so fast – soak in every moment of it!”

“We met in Whitefish, Montana. Chase was having dinner with mutual friends, and they called me over to their table to say hi. We hit it off right away. He ended up asking me up to the bar for a drink, and we spent the evening talking. We both grew up on ranches in Montana, and we quickly found we had many other things in common as well. He made me laugh so hard my face hurt. I knew the first time I met him that he was someone special. I couldn’t chase that feeling away and didn’t want to. It wasn’t long before we were madly in love.

I love all things vintage, and I had a picture in my mind of what I wanted our wedding to look like. Once we found the venue and beautiful vintage rental furniture, I was inspired! We wanted to promote peace, beauty, and fun. My advice to future brides is to spend a lot of time looking at photo inspiration and really know what you love. When I walked around the beautiful venue the day of our wedding, I loved every aspect of it. All the little details were so special and were very uniquely us.â&#x20AC;?

“This style shoot was all about pearls, prohibition, and the unmatched elegance of the 1920s. Even though we are now in the next century of the Roaring Twenties, this dreamy vintage style is still a classic. We wanted something unique and different, and to incorporate a moody side with the feeling of the 1920s. My favorite element of the shoot is the buffalo skull – it adds something so diverse to the style and really accentuated the vibe. My advice to brides would be that ‘The Great Gatsby’ is not the only style you must follow when it comes to this time in history. Be creative, and add different aspects from that era to gain a unique perspective.” – A Rose Photography

“Jack and I met while attending Montana State University, and since then my goal has been to make him smile (even if he pairs it with an eye roll). We’ve been to so many places together – from Russia to New Zealand – but we’ve yet to find anywhere as spectacular as Montana. Jack makes me feel so confident in myself; I’m pretty sure I can do anything if he’s there to support me. I’ve fallen in love with him so many times. He’ll do something as mundane as kiss our dog on the forehead and all of a sudden I’m swooning.

The ceremony was on a beautiful, but cold, autumn day. We put a basket of blankets at the base of the chairlift so our guests could bundle up. After the ceremony, our guests got to watch deer enjoying huckleberries on their chairlift ride down to the lodge. Another unique moment was when I walked down the aisle to a song from ‘Lord of the Rings,’ but hey, Montana kind of reminds me of the shire! Montana is beautiful. Don’t worry too much about decorations, the scenery is sure to outshine it anyway!”

“I first met Ken when we both worked at a restaurant in Bozeman – fresh out of college while pursuing our first career jobs. It wasn’t until about a year later when Ken invited me to his birthday party that a small spark ignited. From there, our love was a slow build, but at some point along the way we both realized that our lives were built entirely around one another and we couldn’t fathom spending life with anyone else.

Amidst the stress of planning, try to remember that the day is simply about you and your partner. Put together a day that feels true to you – not a day that your family wants or your friends expect. If you’re not from the area, ask your vendors for advice. Even though we’re both from Montana, we weren’t familiar with the Whitefish area, so we leaned heavily on our photographer and other vendors for local suggestions and they were hugely helpful.”

lauren + jesse “We didn’t want a big, traditional wedding. We wanted something small and intimate, but we also wanted to capture us in our element. We are avid hikers and love the outdoors, so it was very important to us to incorporate the outdoors and also share this special occasion with our family. On our wedding day, all I envisioned was me hiking in my wedding gown. So Jesse and I decided there was no better way to start our wedding day! We hiked to Grinnell Lake at 6 a.m. so we could say our vows privately (huge shout out to our photographer, Jaci, for supporting my crazy idea). With our family flying in from different states, we wanted to take this opportunity to be ‘just us’ – to take a moment to slow down from all of the excitement of the weekend and enjoy us about to become husband and wife. It was amazing to be in the moment, taking in the beauty of Montana, doing what we love most, with each other. After we hiked back it was time for us to share the moment with our family. We met them at St. Mary Lake to have a small, intimate ceremony along the lake. We wanted a carefree, full-of-love, casual wedding day to share our love for the outdoors. If you’re from out-of-state like us, trust in the local vendors! Montana has small, local businesses who truly care about you and will go above and beyond. “After my first visit to Montana many years ago, I knew one day I wanted to get married there – ideally with the mountains in the background. We had family and friends who had never been to Montana before, and we wanted to show them why it is such a special place to us. We incorporated elements of Montana into our day and decor in different ways, including naming the reception tables with Montana animals, having a cake with huckleberry mousse, and adding local wildflowers to our flower arrangements. And because Glacier is such a big part of our love for Montana, we wanted our first look to be there. Our photographer, Marianne, had us do our first look at Lake McDonald in the same place we got engaged. We had the unique challenge of planning our wedding from a different state, and we even booked Diamond B without seeing it! But, we hired the best in Trisha and Patti at Repeat Boutique & Design, and they helped us with everything. Our biggest piece of advice would be to hire a planner and then roll with whatever happens the day of. During our reception a huge storm rolled in. We were inside the barn during speeches and had planned to dance under string lights outside the barn. Mother Nature had a different idea! The storm took out everything, so we moved the tables to create a dance floor inside the barn. We had a lot of people come up to us after the wedding to tell us it was the best party they’ve ever been to!”

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The summer when we each moved home from college we spent time together through a mutual friend: my brother. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d have game nights with friends and eventually took a beach house trip to Santa Cruz, where Ryan and I walked to the beach and had our first kiss. Shortly after, we had our first date and it was history from there. We both love animals, traveling, and share the same values. My dad lives in Whitefish, and we would visit him every summer. We were engaged at the top of Whitefish Mountain Resort, and we returned a year later to be married in Bigfork.

MY MONTANA WEDDING

Our wedding was inspired by nostalgia and memories. We incorporated a lot of vintage elements and old, feel-good music. We love warm ambiance and wanted it to feel romantic. We had a live piano playing a Frank Sinatra style of music as guests walked in and were greeted with welcome champagne. It rained at the end of the ceremony when we were reading our vows. Ryan was holding an umbrella over us, and at the time I was worried it would last throughout the night. But it cleared up, and now I love hearing the sound of rain in that special moment as I watch the video of our ceremony.â&#x20AC;?
