Chantsd'Auvergne Marie-JosephCanteloube

Consideredasoverelaboratedbyhis earlycritics,Marie-Joseph Canteloube’s Chantsd’Auvergne area delightfuldepictionofnatureitself; accordingtohim,peasantswhosang thesesongshadthewholefeelofthe landastheiraccompaniment,withits hillsandstreams,andonlythesounds ofanorchestracouldpossiblyemulate them.Atthetime,folksongswere becomingpopularasasourcefor composition,howevernoclassicallytrainedsingerwouldhaveever consideredsingingthesein performance.In1930,soprano MadeleineGrey(1896-1979)madethe firstrecordingofthesongs,rapidly increasingtheirpopularitytothepoint whereallofCanteloube’sotherworks arenowadaysalmostentirely neglected.WritteninthelocalOccitan language, Chantsd’Auvergne are smoothanddelicatemelodious paintingsthatalsocontainplentyof earthiermoments.Inall,fivevolumes ofAuvergnesongswerepublished between1923and1954.Canteloube’s musicallandscapesofferaglimpseof lifeintheAuvergneregion,which seemstohavebeenjoyful,carefree, anduncomplicated;acomplete departurefromtheParisianbustling sceneoftentimesfoundinthemusicby hiscontemporaries.
