DEAN. FACULTY OF LAW

CRIME SCENE - DO NOT CROSS - CRIME SCENE - DO

A warm welcome to the Faculty of Law at UTS. Congratulations on being offered a place at the UTS Law Faculty, we are delighted that you have joined us. I am sure 2025 will be a rewarding year for you and the start of a life-long connection with the Law Faculty.

The place of UTS is on the unceded land of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. I encourage you to make use of Level 14 in Building 2 – our dedicated law student space for you to relax and study.

As Dean of the Faculty of Law, I am responsible for the day-to-day running of the Faculty and its future direction. It is a pleasure to be in my role. I am constantly in awe of student enthusiasm, energy and commitment, and as Dean I will find ways to connect with you throughout your degree.

I strongly encourage you to become involved with the activities offered by the Law Students’ Society, the Law Faculty and the University such as the Brennan Justice and Leadership Program. The activities on offer outside the formal classroom are equally important for your understanding of law, the development of your future career and learning how to balance your ‘work’ and your ‘non-work’ activities.

These include social activities, skills-based activities, sporting events, mooting and the list goes on. Exploring how to balance personal and professional skills will remain critical for well-being throughout life. So please don’t be hesitant, get involved early and explore and take up opportunities as they arise.

We are proud of the quality of our legal education, the impact of our research and the influence our students and academic and professional staff have on our local, national and global community through our commitment to social justice. UTS Law has the highest graduate satisfaction of any law school in NSW and the highest graduate employment overall. Our Faculty is known for our articulate, practice ready and friendly graduates.

How can you make the most of your time here at UTS studying law? This is where the UTS Law Students’ Society (“LSS”) comes in!

Our LSS is the largest student-run society in UTS, and one of the largest and most successful law student societies in Australia. In 2024, our LSS had over 1,300 members and organised over 75 initiatives that cater to the law student community at UTS. The focus of our society is to develop a strong community of law students, built on genuine friendships and connections, who all strive for a holistic law school experience.

As a UTS Law student, our LSS now becomes YOUR LSS. Whether you are looking to socialise with your law cohort, compete in competitions to develop your advocacy skills, look for a mentor in the legal industry or at uni, or engage in impactful social justice initiatives, your LSS has you covered.

Strive to be an all-rounder and engage in every aspect of your LSS. Your LSS is simply what you make it to be. The more you do, the more you’ll learn, the more people you’ll meet, and the more you’ll gain from your law school experience.

SOCIALS AT UTS LAW

Uni life is so much more than classes, readings and exams. Yes these aspects are of course essential, but I’d like to argue that the memories, connections and friendships that you make within your degree are equally important. Within the activities portfolio, we curate events throughout the year so that there is always something to do and plenty of opportunities to connect with other students.

Welcome to the Activities portfolio! Our aim is to fill your calendar with events that help you relax, have fun, and create lasting memories. While studying law can be challenging, the connections you make within UTS Law will make it a more shared and rewarding experience.

WRITTEN BY

At the UTS Law Students’ Society (LSS), we’re all about making sure you feel supported, heard and empowered throughout your law school journey. We get it–starting university is exciting (finally, you get to study what actually interests you and enjoy some freedom!), but it can also be overwhelming. Between juggling coursework, assessments, work, personal growth and making new friends, things can get overwhelming quickly. For law students, the challenges can feel even more intense (yep, the rumours about endless readings are unfortunately true!). That’s why looking after your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing is key to staying focused, productive and resilient. Building healthy habits and knowing when to reach out for help can make a huge difference, not just now, but in your future legal career.

We’ve got some awesome wellbeing events lined up for 2025, with opportunities to have real conversations, learn about mental health and connect with your peers. While we’re still finalising the details, you can look forward to favourites like the Smile Project in both Autumn and Spring semesters and the Wellbeing x Equity panel event. Be sure to follow the UTS LSS on all our socials to stay in the loop with what’s happening–you definitely don’t want to miss out on all the free food and goodie bags we’ve got planned for you! We can’t wait to see you there!

We can’t stress enough that the LSS is always here for you, whether you need someone to talk to, access to resources, or just a reminder that you’re not alone on this journey. Additionally, UTS offers a range of services including confidential counselling, sexual harassment support services and more. If you’re feeling unsafe or need someone to talk to, more information can be found on page 13.

Want to get involved? Join the 2025 Education Subcommittee where you can help us plan these events, meet some great people and make lasting friends!

COMPETITIONS AT UTS LAW

WHY YOU SHOULD GET INVOLVED

Engaging with the competitions offered by the UTS LSS allows students to showcase their prowess in applying their classroom knowledge to hypothetical real-world scenarios. Getting involved with our competitions not only allows students to hone their practical skills, but also presents excellent opportunities to make lasting connections and gain industry insights from fellow students, faculty members, and external advocates.

WRITTEN BY

Mooting is a simulated courtroom experience where students argue hypothetical legal cases, honing their advocacy and analytical skills. Mooters research and prepare written arguments before presenting their oral submissions to a panel of judges, simulating appeal proceedings. Mooting enhances students’ understanding of legal principles, improves their oral advocacy, and provides practical insights into the intricacies of legal practice.

CLIENT INTERVIEW

MOOTING NEGOTIATION

Negotiation provides students with an opportunity to master important alternative dispute resolution skills. Teams are provided with hypothetical common and secret facts which they must utilise to come to a mutually beneficial outcome which balances their client’s objectives with the other parties’ interests.

Competitors conduct a 30-minute interview with a hypothetical client that addresses a unique legal issue. They are required to extract all relevant facts through carefully posed questions, raise ethical dilemmas, and provide preliminary legal and non-legal advice.

WRITTEN SKILLS

Through the Advice Writing and Affidavit Drafting competitions, students have the opportunity to develop their practical legal writing skills.

WITNESS EXAMINIATION

Witness Examination is an individual competition where students develop their advocacy skills by examining and cross-examining witnesses. Competitors work to construct a convincing case while simultaneously discrediting their opposing counsel’s case.

GEORGIA MITCHELL AND YOUNGONE OH VICE-PRESIDENTS (COMPETITIONS)

When can new law students compete?

The UTS LSS runs the Junior Skills Competitions (Client Interview, Negotiation and Witness Examination) in the Spring Session. These competitions are open to first and second-year students who have never competed before, making it a level playing field for students to develop and better their practical legal skills.

The Junior Gauntlet Competition is another fantastic way to get involved in the world of UTS LSS competitions as a first-year law student. This competition is run over a weekend in the Winter holidays, where teams of two are provided with the opportunity to learn about each skills competition through workshops and then try their hand at Negotiation, Client Interview and Witness Examination. This is an invaluable opportunity to experience each competition and gain strong foundational skills before competing in our Junior competitions. Throughout the weekend, you will be able to learn about different competitions, ask questions, and acquire tips and tricks for each competition.

Want a first-hand look at how our skills competitions are run? We highly recommend volunteering as a witness or a client for the Opens Witness Examination and Opens Client Interview competitions run throughout the Autumn semester! This is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain valuable insights into the various skills competitions we offer and get a feel for what it is like to compete. By the time our Junior skills competitions roll around in the Spring semester, you will be familiar with the structure of each competition and be prepared to give them a go yourself!

An additional bonus: the hours that you accumulate volunteering as a witness or client can be claimed as Leadership Through Service (LTS) hours towards your Brennan Justice and Leadership Program and the UTS SOUL Award.

Junior mooting also runs in the Spring session, where first and second-year law students new to mooting can participate in two moots:

Junior Championship Moot Takes

place throughout the Spring semester. Weekly on Mondays. Focuses on contract and tort law.

Junior Criminal Law Moot Runs over a single weekend. Focuses on a criminal law knowledge.

Want to learn more?

If you are interested in learning more about the mooting opportunities offered by the UTS LSS, we would highly encourage you to take part in our Mooting Mentoring Program (MMP)! The Program focuses on equipping participants with the skills to nail each aspect of a moot, including our new MMP Moot Intensive, and is open to everyone regardless of experience and how far you are into your degree. More information about this program can be found on page 18.

To keep up to date and to learn more about all the competitions we have on offer, please join our UTS LSS Facebook page and the UTS LSS Competitions Forum Facebook group! We regularly post information and registration details on these pages for all our competitions throughout the year – sign up now so you don’t miss out!

The Mooting Mentoring Program

Running across the Autumn and Spring Sessions, the Mooting Mentoring Program will provide students with the chance to develop their skills in writing, research, and advocacy.

About the Mooting Mentoring Program

Starting in the Autumn Session, students will be able to hear from a number of professional advocates, including solicitors and barristers, on how advocacy is used within their day-to-day activities and how mooting can improve and develop many useful skills during studies. Following this panel, students will be given the opportunity to apply the tips and tricks they heard, joining small groups led by experienced mooters on how to tackle problem questions, research effectively, write submissions, and develop oral arguments. Students will then be able to test out their new skills in the MMP Moot Intensive which is held in a condensed format designed to prepare first-time competitors for the Junior Moots later in the year.

WRITTEN BY

GETTING INVOLVED

In the Spring Session, first and second-year students can tackle the Junior Championship Moot and the Junior Criminal Law Moot. The Junior Championship Moot runs across the entire Session on Mondays and consists of two problem questions in both contract and tort law. The Junior Criminal Law Moot runs over a weekend and allows new mooters to further develop the skills they learnt during the Mooting Mentoring Program.

Mooting at UTS is an invaluable experience and all new law students are encouraged to try it out, joining a welcoming, supportive, and diverse group of students. Through Junior Mooting, students make meaningful connections, both professional and personal, and develop a great foundation to excel during their time at UTS!

Throughout the year, the Social Justice team puts on an incredible range of panels and conferences that not only provide invaluable networking opportunities to attendees, but also provide dedicated environments for students to enhance their understanding of key social justice issues in the context of the law and legal profession. The flagship Social Justice conference is a key event to keep an eye out for in 2025, drawing attendees and guests from across industries and practice areas this initiative offers an excellent opportunity to broaden your network and deepen your knowledge. In 2025 we are also excited to explore the possibility of collaborating with our peers at Sydney University Law Society to make this event the biggest and most impactful version yet. Further, across the rest of the year there are plenty of autonomous panels and conferences run by our Directors and Representatives including the Equity x Wellbeing Panel, Intervarsity Women in Law Conference, Brennan Justice Talks Series, and newly proposed Intervarsity Accessibility Panel. We hope to see you there!

Justice Action Committee

Additionally, applications for the Justice Action (sub) Committee open in early February! This is absolutely not an opportunity to miss! The Committee plays a vital role in helping run, plan, and coordinate Social Justice events within the UTS LSS. Throughout the year, members will have the opportunity to coordinate independent initiatives while developing a close working relationship with the Social Justice team, VicePresident (Social Justice), and key representatives from the UTS Law Faculty across the year. Brennan Justice and Leadership Program

The Brennan Justice and Leadership Program is a collaborative initiative between the UTS LSS and the UTS Faculty of Law, reflecting the importance of social justice at UTS Law. This award is earned through student volunteering and attending various educational events to allow students to develop their sense of justice. The program offers an array of interesting initiatives such as Justice Talks with renowned speakers, Semesterly Brennan Discussion Groups, initiatives for RASA Week, and various charity fundraisers and drives. The newly established Public Speaking Society x Brennan Program Public Speaking Competition was an absolute hit in 2024, and the flow of new events from the Brennan Team is never ending. With over 1400 students and alumni, the Brennan Program is a free, voluntary initiative for UTS Law students. It aims to bolster justice consciousness, idealism, and a sense of service, enriching both their studies and future professional work.

Financial Equity Subsidies

To ensure all UTS LSS Members and UTS Law Students have equal access to our extensive range of events and resources throughout the year, the LSS offers a dedicated equity programme. This programme operates based on proof of financial hardship and includes two main initiatives: the Textbook Equity Scheme and subsidised tickets for flagship LSS events. Subsidised tickets are available for key social events, including First Year Law Camp, Law Cruise, and Law Ball. The Textbook Equity Scheme, run in partnership with the UTS Law Faculty, aims to ensure UTS Law students have access to essential educational resources needed to succeed in their studies. Both schemes are need-based, and there may be expansions to the accepted circumstances of financial necessity in 2025. Stay tuned for more updates! These initiatives enable students to fully engage in their Law School experience, both academically and socially, regardless of their financial situation.

REPRESENTATIVES

Hi!- My name is Kiki and I am the Accessibility Representative to the LSS for 2025. A huge congratulations and welcome to all students starting their UTS Law journey this year! Accessibility is the newest addition to the UTS LSS Social Justice portfolio, and we have some very exciting initiatives planned for the year ahead.

My focus this year is on advocating for accessibility standards that benefit not just students with disabilities, but our entire community. We are committed to creating inclusive, supportive spaces that accommodate diverse needs, and removing barriers that might prevent students from engaging with LSS events, programs, social media, and resources. One key initiative I’ll be continuing this year is the Diverse-Abilities Blog which is a safe, empowering platform where students can share their experiences of navigating law school and the legal workplace with their unique needs. My goal is to expand this blog by introducing new features that amplify lived experiences, and foster meaningful conversations around disability rights, advocacy, and representation in the legal field. Another exciting project is the creation of the LSS’s first ever Inclusivity Guide, a resource that will outline practical, inclusive standards and provide tools for all students to ensure our spaces are as welcoming and accessible as possible. Later in the year, I’ll be hosting some fantastic events, including an Intervarsity Accessibility Panel, which is a valuable opportunity to hear from, and connect with legal professionals working in the disability and accessibility space- so keep an eye out and get involved!

I’m here to support and represent YOU, celebrate all kinds of diversity, and create a culture of inclusivity within UTS. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at accessibility@utslss.com if you have any questions, ideas, or just want to chat. I’d love to hear from you!

Hello and Kia ora! My name is Huw Wiremu Watson and I am the First Nations Representative to the LSS for 2025.

To all students joining UTS Law in 2025, a sincere congratulations and a warm welcome!

CRIME SCENE - DO NOT CROSS - CRIME SCENE - DO

DO NOT CROSS - CRIME SCENE - DO NOT CROSS

I would also like to welcome you in the language of the Gadigal people, whom the LSS acknowledge as the traditional custodians of the Eora Nation on which our campus stands. So to you all, I would like to say - bujari gamarruwa.

A bit about myself: I am proud to be Māori of the tribes Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Te Āti Haunuia-Pāpārangi and I have a great passion for First Nations justice. In my spare time I enjoy playing and watching footy, listening to music and playing piano.

As First Nations Representative, my goal is to connect and support all First Nations law students throughout the duration of their degree. I am

dedicated to bolstering the involvement of First Nations law students within the array of exciting initiatives that have been planned for the year ahead. Furthermore, I am here to ensure the availability of academic, cultural and/or wellbeing resources that may assist each and every one of you throughout the year.

For the 2025 Autumn session, I will be looking to partner with First Nations community organisations by way of a fundraiser. This will include a related fundraising event for all students to attend and support!

As a student advocate, I am here to support and represent you. As such, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time with all queries, questions or concerns at firstnations@utslss.com OR feel free to message me on my social media to chat!

Welcome to UTS guys!! My name is Declan (he/him) and I am this year’s Queer Students Representative. I am a second year Bachelor of Laws and recently transferred to pursue another Bachelor of Communications (Social and Political Sciences) Student. I identify as Gay and come from a mixed-race Māori (Ngāti Maniapoto), Niuean, and Irish background. I am probably one of the third loudest voices on Level 14 and wholeheartedly believe I have better music taste than the entire floor too.

This year I really want to place an important focus on fundraising events for LGBTQIA+ charity and educational initiatives like ACON, BlaQ and Minus18; coupled with continuing to host a sweep of competitions, and diversity in law panels for you guys to attend. I also want to make sure we keep up our intervarsity social spirit so expect collaborative events with other Queer Law Student groups like our annual Pride Mooting Competition or our planned social mixer in semester one.

With strong professional Pride networks already established by my predecessors, and hopefully expanded during my tenure, I have no doubt that the UTS LSS will continue to shape and uplift the futures of our Queer student body. This includes liaising with Pride in Law, the Australian Lawyers for Human Rights, other Law societies in Sydney, and diversity HR representatives of Sydney’s top firms.

I want to be a familiar face for you guys so feel free to hit me up for a chat on campus, even if it’s just for recommendations for Sydney’s best gay bars (or more professional, educational matters). We have such a large and inclusive community of LGBTQIA+ Law Students and alumni here at UTS so know you are never alone in your experiences.

So with that being said, if any of you have any questions or worries about Uni life, or anything else feel free to reach out at queer@utslss.com

DO NOT CROSS - CRIME SCENE - DO NOT SCENECROSSCRIME - DO NOT CROSS - CRIME SCENE

Hi everyone! My name is Ava Keevers and I am the Women’s Representative to the LSS.

Firstly, I want to extend a warm welcome to all students starting law at UTS in 2025!

As someone who just finished their first year in 2024, I can confidently say you are in for a great year of which the LSS is here to help to make it even better.

A little about me: I’m passionate about fostering opportunities for women and championing female-focused causes. In my free time, I love debating, going to the beach, and spending time with friends.

As a Women’s representative my goal is to continue to foster an inclusive environment for female-identifying students within the LSS to ensure everyone feels welcome to engage with

all the society has to offer. This year we have some amazing events and programs organised that I strongly recommend everyone participates in. This includes the Women’s Mentoring Program (WMMP), which pairs female-identifying law students with inspiring female mentors in the field. Moreover, the Walk for WAGEC and the Intervarsity Women in Law Conference.

To stay in the loop and make the most of these opportunities, I encourage you to join the Women’s Collective Facebook page, where you’ll receive regular updates and insights.

I’m so excited to meet and connect with as many of you as possible this year. Most importantly, I’m here to support and represent you, so please don’t hesitate to reach out! You can contact me at women@utslss.com or message me on social media anytime.

EQUITY AT UTS LAW

Hi there! My name is Sarah and I am your equity director for 2025!

I am a third year Communications (Social and Political Science) / Laws Student with a passion for social justice and equity. I am eager to contribute to fostering a supportive and inclusive community for UTS law students.

The Equity position is essential in ensuring students have access to the necessary educational resources to succeed in their studies, and numerous opportunities for social engagement with flagship UTS LSS events across the year.

Subsidies and Equity Schemes

Our Equity Program features two primary initiatives: the Textbook Equity Scheme and subsidised tickets for major LSS events. Both schemes require proof of financial hardship.

The Textbook Equity Scheme is a collaborative effort between the UTS LSS and UTS Law Faculty, aiming to ensure UTS Law students have access to essential educational resources needed to excel in their studies. This need-based scheme provides access to an array of mandatory textbooks for core subjects studied by UTS Law students and relies on proof of financial hardship to ensure the fair allocation of resources. Applications for the Textbook Equity Scheme open during the orientation of the Autumn and Spring semesters, supporting students who may face financial barriers and ensuring they have access to key materials for academic success. Stay tuned for more information through the LSS social media pages!

Subsidised tickets are offered for major social events like First Year Law Camp, Law Cruise, and Law Ball. These subsidies aim to ensure that UTS LSS Members and UTS Law Students have equal access to social events and environments, fostering the development of strong relationships and friendships within the cohort. Ticket subsidies are made available alongside general ticket sales for these key events.

Equity Initiatives - Education and Outreach

The annual Wellbeing x Equity panel is an excellent opportunity to participate in key discussions on how legal environments are taking meaningful steps to ensure that professional settings are accessible and sustainable for legal professionals In collaboration with the Education Portfolio, this initiative is a great way to learn more about how top tier firms and competitive workplaces are approaching systemic challenges like burnout, stress, and othering in professional settings.

In 2025, the Equity role will also be looking at increasing the scale and impact of our charity and fundraising efforts, through key initiatives like the Autumn and Spring Charity events and opportunities for student volunteering with notable industry partners.
