UTSOA 2016
EMPLOYMENT REPORT
2016, single graduate
2016, multiple graduates
2012-2015
THE UTSOA INFLUENCE With nationally ranked programs and a vision that combines intellectual curiosity and ambition with professional practice, it is no wonder that graduates of the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture are in high demand. In fact, 90% of our graduating class in 2016 who pursued employment reported finding a job in the months after graduation; 2% opted to pursue graduate studies. This report compiles the job placement of 2016 UT Austin School of Architecture alumni six months after graduation. Survey data is assembled into an employment report published annually. The publication organizes jobs by degree and includes employer name, position title, and location for each graduate, while maintaining individual confidentiality. Firms or organizations that employ multiple graduates from the same program are identified by an asterisk. Graduates who participated in a dual degree program are indicated as well. A salary breakdown is included for programs where adequate data was received. This report also includes information about alumni interest in pursuing licensure or certification within each field. Employment type is broken down into public, private, and non-profit sectors for Community and Regional Planning and Historic Preservation graduates. Data in this report is based upon a 66% survey response rate.

Advice from UTSOA Graduates
“Network when you don’t need a job. You never know when you or someone else will have an interesting opportunity come up!”
CRP
“Prioritize your own experience and learning above rushing into a job. Be open but critical to different options. Make your employment choices according to the broader goals you have for your life.”
BArch
“Advocate for yourself. Learn how to sell the value of what you do. Not what it is, but why it is and why it is good for someone else (particularly your client). Practice saying no by saying what you can do - as opposed to saying, “no, I can’t do that,” say instead, “here’s what I can do…”
MSAS
“Look for jobs earlier in your last semester rather than later. Don’t be afraid to take an internship that can turn into a temporary job which can turn into a permanent job. It is substantially easier to find a new job once you have an existing job.”
CRP
“Always negotiate your salary and don’t foreclose on any opportunities prematurely. It helps if you have other offers during the negotiating process. I received an offer for a job I wasn’t interested in taking but that had a substantially higher salary, which I subsequently used to negotiate my offer at the job I was actually interested in. Apply lots of places, and pursue informal opportunities. I received an offer, for example, due to a presentation I gave on a class project to the Texas housing department. You never know where opportunities will arise.”
