FROM THE EDITOR Off-Roaders: Experts in Socially Distancing

September/October 2020 Edition

BY LANCE SCHWARTZ

A

t the time of this writing, it’s been just about six months since Covid-19 infiltrated our society and began disrupting nearly every aspect of our lives. I still struggle to wrap my head around all of the horrible things our society has had to deal with. Loss of life, loss of jobs, and the loss of many freedoms we’ve always taken for granted has left people depressed, distraught, and disgusted. One of the only things medical experts seem to still be in agreement about is the benefits of practicing social distancing, which has been encouraged since this whole debacle started. For many folks, being socially distant seemed to be one of the hardest things to cope with. The thought of distancing yourself and your family from the outside world was a huge pill for much of the general population to swallow. For off-roaders, however, social distancing is what we’ve all been trying to do long before we even knew it was a thing! Although economists warned of total destruction

8 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

for our economy, there are plenty of companies in our industry that have had their most profitable year ever, even with all the restrictions in place across the country. Companies that sell family fun (powersports, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, watersports, etc...) have all absolutely crushed it! I think the last few months are evidence that the off-road industry is trending in a very positive direction. Yamaha even upped the ante with the recent introduction of their new large-displacement, longtravel, big-tire RMAX2 and RMAX4 UTV models. We’ve weathered one hell of a storm over the last few months, and we’ve likely got a few more whoop sections and kickers left to navigate. I have no doubt we’ll face this adversity head-on and be stronger because of our struggles and sacrifices. Despite it all, families will do what they need to do to get by, and hopefully that means getting out on the trails for a little bit of adventure. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for you...from a distance of course!

or UTV Offroaders in the Western states, it’s hard for anyone to justify a Talon X over an R. Technically, it is the deal of the century: you get a full factoryengineered long travel suspension option for an extra $1,000. So why buy the narrower X model, you ask? When the trails get skinny, the X really sets itself apart.

2021 HONDA TALON 1000X

ENGINE

Honda’s Talon siblings both use the same engine and driveline. A 999cc parallel twin engine looks like two high-performance motorcycle engines joined at the crank. It features Honda’s Unicam head design, wherein the camshaft opens the intake valves directly via a cam-on-bucket design, while the exhaust lobes of the camshaft operate forked rocker arms to open the exhaust valves. The engine is buttery-smooth and loves to rev.

TRANSMISSION/DRIVETRAIN

Honda calls the Talon’s 4WD system i4WD, named so because of all the intricate sensor integration Honda has packed into this system. The i4WD system uses individual wheel speed sensors and a very smart computer to control traction at all four wheels. The differentials are essentially open most of the time, and when the computer senses wheel slip, it will apply braking pressure to that

wheel. This restricts movement, causing the differential to multiply the torque back to the wheel that has traction. Honda’s extremely high-tech 6-speed dual clutch transmission is the most technologically advanced on the market and is one of the biggest reasons to buy a Talon. It makes the engine come to life, allowing it to wind out to redline and crack off shifts with incredible speed. A selectable high and low sub-transmission allows even lower ratios for crawling. With 6 forward ratios on tap, the Honda never has trouble finding the right gear. The transmission in the Talon has selectable automatic shift modes (Normal and Sport), as well as full-manual paddle shifting capability. Honda’s engineers did great work with the shifting algorithms, as the Talon is adept at predicting the right gear to be in even in fast-paced driving. When you stab the brakes, it grabs a downshift.

UTV REVIEW

SUSPENSION

Here is the main (only) area where the Talon X and R differ. While the R that we reviewed recently featured Honda’s 4+ link rear suspension, the X uses a more traditional 3 link setup. It is 4.4” narrower than the Talon 1000R but does give up 5 inches of suspension travel out back. It still manages an impressive 15.1 inches of rear wheel travel, more than enough to slam through some big bumps at speed and keep landings soft. Up front, the X and R both use double Aarm suspension, with the X only giving up 3.1 inches of travel to the R. The X’s wheelbase is the biggest change, as it’s a full 5.1 inches shorter than the R’s. This can be felt more than any of the other dimensional changes, as the

16 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

X turns in sharper and rotates a little easier. If you were to boil the X and the R down to a black and white comparison, it would go like this: if you need a skinnier car because you ride on narrower trails, get the X. You will love it. If trail width isn’t as much of an issue, slap down the extra stack for the R. The Talon 1000X comes equipped with Fox Podium 2.0 shocks featuring QS3 quick adjusters. While die-hard suspension enthusiasts will likely prefer a more tunable shock, the QS3 adjusters do a great job of keeping things simple enough for most drivers. The three settings are easily distinguishable from the cab and offer a dynamically adjustable ride quality that can really stiffen up if you want to put the hammer down.

2021 HONDA TALON 1000X

TIRES/WHEELS/BRAKES

As with the Talon R, the X gets Maxxis MU9H rubber. This tire is based on the Coronado but tuned for Honda’s own specifications. The tire turns in well but feels loose on hardpack and doesn’t give a lot of forward bite. A good set of beadlock wheels will add a level of durability, but the stock wheels hang onto the tire sidewall extremely well, even at lower pressures.

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

The Talon 1000X comes in two exterior color choices: Pearl Red/Metallic Gray and Metallic Gray/Metallic Blue. Sadly, the blue scheme has far more gray in it than blue, but both hues shine in the sunlight and look equally great on

the car. Honda’s graphics package is neat, and we would recommend purchasing the $209 Honda lower door panels while you are at the dealership. The interior of the Talon is a nice place to be, with good ergonomics and a fairly upright seating position. It’s a very different feel from an X3 or a YXZ but is plenty comfortable. The R and X share the same interior, with some color-matched bits depending on the color scheme you choose. One of the coolest aftermarket parts we have seen recently is a dash relocation kit for the Talon, which relocates the digital multifunction gauge to behind the steering wheel, instead of in the center of the dash.

IMPRESSIONS

2021 HONDA TALON 1000X

Honda’s Talon is a fantastic machine everywhere we drive it. The engine and transmission combination is a great mixture of hardcore and overly-refined. The Talon sounds far more intimidating than it drives, which is a great thing. On narrow trails, the X model’s shorter wheelbase makes it easier to tuck into a rut and hold a line, especially when you need to pivot the car around an obstacle. It feels a little lighter than the R as well, likely due to the tighter suspension tuning keeping the car’s vertical motion controlled. The Talon offers a vastly different driving experience than that of any other UTV brand on the market. It is the only manually shifted sport UTV that also features a fully automatic shifting mode. When you get in the Talon, you can choose to

18 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

either drive it like a rally car or just like the truck you towed it down the highway in. It leaves you fresh after a long day in the driver’s seat, not buzzing you into fatigue like a CVT-equipped UTV. Suspension compliance and ride quality are good, but not quite as refined as some others yet. Honda is still new to the sport UTV game, and they’ve already hit a home run with their first offerings. Honda’s ability to blend performance, comfort, and incredible amounts of technology into an easyto-use package are sure to push the UTV segment forward. Drivers lucky enough to get behind the wheel of a Talon won’t want to go back to the dark ages of technology, and we expect to see more manufacturers start to adopt more automotive technology in this segment.

e all love the thrill of a fast-paced trail ride, exploring trails packed with vastly different types of terrain, or conquering the most technical rocks and obstacles we can find. For many UTV owners, however, climbing into their rig means something different- maintaining fences, traveling across large jobsites, or carrying equipment. When that hard work has to get done, the UTV is one of the most versatile tools available. The Polaris Ranger nameplate is a longtime staple of the utility UTV industry, predating just about every modern UTV on the market today. Meet 2020’s Polaris Ranger 1000 Premium, one of the best all-around tools for work and a little play. 22 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

UTV REVIEW

Highlights: • Versatrac Turf Mode • Full length skid plate • Ultra-quiet exhaust • Huge dump bed • Three seats • Numerous cup holders • Dependability

ENGINE:

Powering the Polaris Ranger 1000 Premium Edition is a naturally-aspirated 999cc twin cylinder SOHC engine that makes 61 HP in this state of tune. It is more than enough power for this machine’s scope of work. The engine makes enough grunt to pull a trailer, haul a heavy load, or even cruise around comfortably on country roads at speeds of 40-45 MPH. The fuel injection is great for easy starting in all types of weather and offers great fuel economy. The exhaust is truly one of the quietest on the market, and your ears will thank you after a long day in the seat. 24 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

TRANSMISSION/DRIVETRAIN:

The Ranger 1000 uses a belt-drive CVT transmission with selectable 2 and 4 wheel drive. It features a high and low range forward gear, plus reverse. Polaris also includes an unlocked rear differential setting called “VersaTrac Turf Mode”. The turf mode allows you to drive over grass, gravel, and other loose surfaces without tearing them up. 2WD becomes a perfect choice when pulling a trailer or even driving on a softer dirt surface. 4WD of course is best when having to negotiate obstacles, technical trails, or when playing in the mud. The low range is great for

2020 POLARIS RANGER 1000

pulling a trailer, hauling a bed full of cargo, or climbing a steep hill. Having high range available lets you cruise along and conserve fuel or kick up your speed when traveling down longer, smooth surfaces.

SUSPENSION:

While slightly limited in wheel travel compared to today’s high performance sport utility machines, the Ranger truly shines at slower speeds in rough conditions. The sway bar and suspension work in harmony to provide a stable yet comfortable ride in all types of terrain.

TIRES/WHEELS/BRAKES:

Since the 1000 Premium is still built on the base Ranger platform, it doesn’t get the large tire treatment. The stock tires are 26 inches tall, which is fairly standard in the utility segment but may leave you wanting for more ground clearance off-road. The gearing, clutching, and tire size all complement each other to provide a great driving feel. The tires hook up well, whether you’re pulling a trailer through some softer conditions or on hard pack at higher speeds. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 25

UTV REVIEW

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR:

Inside the cabin, Polaris gave the Ranger enough shoulder room to comfortably fit three adults across the bench seat. There are numerous cup holders, (8 to be exact) allowing you to carry plenty of beverages in the cabin to keep you hydrated. The glove box and additional cargo compartments are large and placed conveniently to carry anything you might want with you in the cab. The sliding seat and tilt steering wheel makes it very easy to accommodate anyone from 5’ to 7’ tall with ease. The seat on the Premium edition is also 1” thicker than the base model for extra comfort. Exterior finish quality is great, and the automotive-style paint shines nicely when clean and washes easily after getting it dirty.

RIDE TIME:

Upon receipt of the Ranger 1000 Premium Edition, the first task was to just take it out and drive it to get a feel for it. With three grown individuals wearing helmets and safely buckled in, there is plenty of room to ride comfortably and not bang helmets. The ride at slow speed is impressively comfortable in comparison to the sport models of late, giving up high-speed bump absorption for a better every-day ride. One of the Ranger’s best attributes is how dialed-in the clutching is. There is no high-RPM stall or jerking when trying to slowly accelerate. It has a very low stall speed, contributing to smooth takeoffs 26 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

2020 POLARIS RANGER 1000 and acceleration. Being able to drive around without disturbing people or animals with a loud exhaust is fantastic. The turfmode really does improve drivability, as the Ranger turns a lot tighter and smoother using only 1 tire to drive, rather than pushing and barking tires trying to turn while locked in 2wd. The Polaris Ranger 1000 Premium is not just a work or utility vehicle though. We have used it plenty for pure pleasure and leisure activities as well. While camping at one of our local lakes, we use it to travel back and forth from the camps to the boat slips. With the provided 2 receiver hitch, it is the perfect companion to pull our 8 bass buster boat around. The Ranger can be used to launch easily into any pond or lake with a semi-accessible shoreline. The bed is large enough to accommodate a full-size cooler, small grill, tent, and sleeping bags allowing you to trail ride as far as you like before setting up camp for the evening. While using the Ranger for leisure is great, it truly shines as workhorse. Since having this unit on our 160 acre ranch, I could probably count on one hand how many times it didn’t have a 30 gallon sprayer in the bed. It makes things extremely easy for 2 people (even possible by yourself) to drive around and spot spray weeds or unwanted trees as they are coming up. The towing capability makes it easy to pull the larger broadcast UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 27

sprayer behind as well while spraying 45’ at a time. The Ranger handles the chore of pulling our ranch welding trailer around without difficulty. Pulling the welding trailer behind the Ranger allows you to pull into or through places a full-size pickup cannot. We have hauled some very heavy loads in the cargo bed to test the weight capabilities and still even the smaller, younger kids have no problem being able to release the bed and dump what we are hauling. Having a bed big enough to fit a large cooler, a chainsaw, oil, axe, etc. allows you to be able and head out for an entire day of tree trimming and having everything you need with you. Doing all of the heavy lifting and harder work also allows us the opportunities to sometimes enjoy the easier chores like tending to our livestock. The Ranger makes it effortless to keep up on daily checks of all our animals. The ultra-quiet exhaust lets us drive right alongside our cows, horses, and donkeys without disturbing them at all. Our animals have become quite used to the Ranger and actu-

ally enjoy seeing it, as it normally means they are about to get fed. We have loaded a sick calf into the bed and driven it up to the lots where we could vaccinate it and further treat it back to good health. There have been numerous times we have used the Ranger to drive out in the pastures and catch horses where we would halter them and bring them up to the barn to be saddled and go gather cows. We have also used the Ranger alone to gather cows or push them from one pasture over to another. It has earned its keep around our ranch and is one of my favorite tools. To this day, it has never once left me stranded or had any part failures. The 2020 Polaris Ranger 1000 is an amazing machine. Whether you intend to use it for back country off-road excursions, trail riding, or the most extreme jobs, the Ranger will never cease to amaze you with its impressive capabilities. One of the only things we keep asking ourselves is how we ever lived so long without one, knowing we will never go without one for the foreseeable future.

ersatility – it’s the one word that truly describes the Polaris General lineup. The General is a well engineered, do-it-all UTV that can handle your daily work chores just as well as it can blast around corners on the trail. With new models of the General on the market, including this entry-level Sport variation which retails at an attractive $15,999 MSRP, should the General be on the top of your UTV shopping list this year?

UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 33

UTV REVIEW

Highlights: The Sport variation of the General is the stripped down, no-frills version of the lineup, hence the reason for the reduced price tag. However, that doesn’t mean that you should ignore it while shopping for a new UTV. It still retains many of the features that make the General great, including a comfortable and well designed cab, good suspension, a powerful engine, and cargo/towing capabilities that increase the versatility of the machine exponentially.Â

34 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

2020 POLARIS GENERAL SPORT ENGINE

As we mentioned above, the Sport model still has the venerable and well-loved parallel twin cylinder Polaris powerplant, delivering 100 horsepower and a well-rounded power delivery feel throughout the entire RPM range. Whether we were in Low gear crawling up rock climbs or in High gear blasting around corners, there really wasn't a time when we wanted more power in this recreational-focused machine. Even pulling trailers around, we felt like the engine had plenty of low-end grunt to get us up hills. The linear character of this engine is really where it shines – it pulls from the bottom to almost all the way to the top of the RPM range. And, we appreciate that the Sport has all of the same components in this department as its more expensive brethren. With this being said, could it use more power? Not really – you’re going to find that the Sport is fun to drive, plus it’s relatively quiet and easy to work on with the engine being directly under the dumping rear cargo bed.

TRANSMISSION/DRIVETRAIN

While Polaris doesn’t have the best clutching systems in the industry, they do have a well-weighted clutching system in this Sport model for a wide variety of terrains and uses. Low gear is accurately low for towing around the 1500 lb trailer limit. All of our testers felt like the Low gear had accurate and good engagement. And, with an unlocking rear differential at your fingertips, you can easily disengage the rear diff into “turf mode” to save your grass or sensitive ground and make tight turns with ease. When 4WD is needed, the automatic locking front differential is a good unit and works well in any situation that we tested it in. It doesn’t allow the driver to truly lock it in diff lock, but it does automatically lock up quickly enough to get you up the hills you're tackling. When High gear was utilized, the fun factor goes way, way up for all of you trail aficionados out there. The General Sport is truly a blast to drive, and High gear can take you to some pretty high speeds when blasting around trails. The clutch engagement is immediate when you stab the throttle, and we love how Polaris doesn’t detune their throttle engagement even with the electronic system. When you push the throttle, the Sport responds and GOES. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 35

UTV REVIEW

SUSPENSION

With over 12 inches of travel in the front and over 13 inches in the rear, the Sport model has a, literally, sporty feel to it when trail riding. The suspension definitely isn’t bottomless or as plush feeling as the higher end General models, but that’s the entry-level tradeoff of the Sport. That also doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to drive, it just means you can’t quite push this model as hard as you can the higher end General models in corners and more diversified terrain out there. The stock shocks land in the middle ground between being plush and harsh over terrain – it’s not soft, but it also won’t rattle your teeth out. The suspension on this UTV also holds up well to towing trailers or hauling 600 lbs in the dumping rear cargo bed. There is a stiff enough spring to where a 36 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

heavy load doesn’t overwhelm the Sport. With front and rear swaybars, the vehicle is controllable in all situations and doesn’t feel like it is going to lean too hard into corners or with the loaded bed.

TIRES/WHEELS/BRAKES

The stock CST tires are a bit unique in the industry, and they do a good job of “doing it all”, no matter what terrain you are riding in. All of our testers liked the good forward bite of these tires in the hard pack. The softer dirt was also handled well. These tires pair well to the 4-wheel disc brakes, which performed very well in all situations with plenty of stopping power. We didn’t put too many miles on these tires, but they seem like they would last quite a while under normal use as well.

No matter which General model you are looking at, one of the highlights has to be the interior. Upon entry into the vehicle, each driver and passenger is greeted with sealed and solid feeling doors. They are right up there with the excellent doors on the Can-Am Maverick Trail/Sport lineup. These doors have full coverage from the elements, and buyers can easily pair the doors with Polaris’ abundant accessories for this vehicle to create a full cab system. We are also consistently impressed with the comfort of the seats and the overall dash layout of the General – it is a great place to be on long trail days. There are plenty of storage areas, both on the dash, in the center console, and in the glove

box. There are plenty of accessory switch areas to utilize for accessories, too. And, if you are one of those people looking to customize your vehicle, the Sport might be your preferred model, not only with the lower price tag but also because this model still comes with the industry’s best accessory plug-and-play wiring management system – Polaris Pulse. It’s incredibly easy to plug your accessories in and wire the switches into the dash. With plenty of room, storage, and room for expansion (accessories-wise), the General Sport really has a great interior.
