The all-new 2024 Polaris RZR XP 1000 lineup has been completely redesigned from the ground up to raise the industry standard for sport side-by-sides to an entirely new level – delivering class-leading durability, comfort and performance.

Stronger than ever before, the Polaris RZR XP chassis provides improved trail agility and rugged durability in rough conditions. It showcases a new, aggressive style, with integrated doors, LED accent lights and an upgraded level of fit and finish delivering a premium experience. A newly designed, reinforced driveline withstands rough terrain with stronger half shafts, prop shaft, and bearings. The RZR XP’s optimally-tuned Walker Evans Racing® Needle Shocks, with 16-position adjustability, provide a plush ride, while a redesigned cockpit improves legroom and line of sight for drivers and passengers. Featuring responsive acceleration thanks to an all-new ProStar 1000 Gen 2, 114-horsepower engine, the RZR XP also provides extra traction through technical terrain via Polaris’ fast engaging on-demand All Wheel Drive system.

“The multi-terrain category is the largest segment in the performance side-by-side industry, and we’re proud to deliver an all-new vehicle that’s head and shoulders above anything else available today,” said Reid Wilson, Vice President, Polaris Off Road Recreation. “In 2014, the RZR XP 1000 started it all for multi-terrain sport side-by-sides, and now, we’re building upon that legacy – taking what has long been the standard and making it even better in every possible way.”

Inspiring riders to break free from the mundane, the RZR XP delivers a rugged design, all-day comfort, and the legendary performance that unlocks new experiences. With over 60 allnew accessories, the RZR XP offers engineered customization options for riders who like to navigate the trails or get off the beaten path. Plus, Pro Armor will be the only aftermarket brand with a full range of launch-ready accessories like cages, doors, storage, seats, bumpers and more.

RUGGED DESIGN

Featuring an all-new rugged design, the 2024 RZR XP is designed to keep riders out with their crew even longer. A stronger, redesigned chassis increases strength and stiffness, providing improved agility, while a redesigned driveline from front to back results in stronger half shafts, prop shaft and bearings that allows riders to stay out all day long.

In addition, an integrated front bumper and full-coverage skid plate provide durable protection to the front of the vehicle, the driveline, and engine components. The RZR XP also offers toolless access and a removable rear bin for easy maintenance work, while new mounting and ducting create a cooler running CVT that increases belt life.

Built with a purposeful design, the RZR XP comes with a new mounting location for the Pro HD 4,500 LB winch, allowing it to take center stage with an integrated fairlead that doubles as a styled cover. Also available to the RZR XP is a pivoting spare tire carrier, with a strategic mounting location in the rear that does not sacrifice cargo space. With accessory options available for seamless integration, riders can enjoy full coverage fender flares and a stamped aluminum roof that adds increased strength and a unique design element.

ALL-DAY COMFORT

To enhance the experience and keep the ride fun for all riders, the RZR XP delivers a smooth ride with optimally-tuned shocks and a redesigned cabin. Tuned for customers most used speeds and terrain, the Walker Evans Racing® Needle Shocks’ available 20.5 inches of usable travel provide a comfortable ride to keep you out with your crew longer. Featuring all-new, in-cab ergonomics, Polaris fully maximized seating by adjusting the front seats one-inch lower and 1.5-inches back – resulting in a sportier driving position with increased leg room. By elevating the rear seats by 2 inches, the sight line is improved for rear passengers.

Adding convenience, Polaris redesigned the RZR XP’s cargo space to keep items secure, but within reach for easy accessibility. The all-new RZR XP also features full doors, an available roof, new LED lights that illuminate the trails, and new illuminated in-cab switches for easy visibility at night.

To extend the ride across terrains and seasons, the RZR XP accommodates upgraded upper doors with a molded sealing surface between the front and rear doors to keep the heat in and the cold out. Riders can enjoy a more comfortable ride by adding a heater and windshield wiper kit to dial in temperature control and increase visibility while riding. Pack all the essentials with RZR’s first tonneau cover, which allows riders to turn the entire bed into a storage box. Additional storage upgrades for the RZR XP includes nesting cargo boxes and coolers, as well as in-cab storage bags to keep the essentials close.

ENGINE

Kawasaki’s 2023 KRX1000 powerplant remains unchanged, with a stout 999cc parallel-twin engine delivering power through a CVT transmission. The KRX engine makes good noises and has a decent amount of low-to-mid grunt, but it lacks top end punch. The engine will motivate the KRX to the mid-60 MPH range, putting it near the rear of the pack in the 1000cc NA sport class. The KRX’s engine is well suited for slower technical terrain, where its engine and throttle tuning really start to shine. The KRX also has a Low Power Mode switch, which deadens the throttle response and pulls back more engine power to make navigating slow-speed obstacles easier. We would like to see adjustable throttle maps without the need for reduced power.

The KRX’s engine is fed by a Donaldson air filter box, with a large intake plenum designed to increase throttle response. It breathes through a

large prefilter snorkel that is routed up to the top of the bedsides. One side feeds the engine, the other feeds the CVT intake.

TRANSMISSION/DRIVETRAIN

All KRX1000 models use the same two-speed CVT transmission. This Kawasaki belt drive system also integrates a centrifugal clutch that takes the abuse at low speed rather than trashing the belt. The gearing in the KRX’s transmission seems very low, as it reaches its top speed quite easily in stock form. We have also heard rumblings of some customers experiencing premature clutch wear with users subjecting their KRXs to prolonged high-RPM/high speed use, although we have never had an issue with one of our production testing units. We are very interested to see the effects of some aftermarket clutch tuning on this platform.

The KRX handles great, with ample width to remain stable at high speed.
UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 35
KAWASAKI

SUSPENSION

You can sum up the difference between the KRX 2 seat and 4 seat models to mostly slight changes in length and weight. This means that the suspension geometry, arms, brakes, axles, and everything else on the wheel end was carried over to the KRX 4. Changes to spring rates and shock valving to deal with the extra vehicle weight were made, but otherwise, this car is just as great as the 2 seat KRX.

Up front, a Dual A-Arm suspension setup delivers 18.6 inches of useable wheel travel, but Kawasaki didn’t stretch the KRX out to 72 inches wide to get it done. The KRX gives the most useable wheel travel in its class, and does so at a 68 inch width. This makes tighter trails a bit easier to navigate, while still giving the KRX amazing handling confidence.

INTERIOR/EXTERIOR

The KRX 4 has a ton of occupant room, which is one of the best things about it. Sitting side by side with another full-sized human is much more comfortable than it is in some of the narrower machines in the class. Legroom in the rear seats is also plentiful. Full-size adults fit just fine, and Kawasaki didn’t raise the rear seats stadium-style to keep the center of gravity and overall height down. The KRX’s clever body design helps shrink it a bit visually, and it looks great even from a side profile. This model’s orange on black color scheme was a hit with our staff as well.

Kawasaki also offers a ton of accessories for the KRX, from roofs, to cab nets and windshields, winches, lighting and more. Ergonomically, the KRX is a hit with most drivers and passengers, with few complaints about the interior except the lack of a telescoping steering column.

TIRES/WHEELS/BRAKES

Traction is provided by MAXXIS Carnivore tires in a square 31x10R15 setup. This particular model did not have beadlock wheels, and we

never experienced a de-bead during testing. The Carnivore tires work will with the KRX’s chassis, and it exhibits cornering grip that will leave you grinning on curvy trails. We really like the overall feel of the KRX’s OE setup, and the tires wear well too. The wheel design is elegant, with a 16-spoke design and a machined aluminum face that really pops.

The KRX’s brakes are strong and the brake bias is set up very well for braking into a corner or coming down a steep grade. The braking traction and overall grip level add a lot of confidence for the driver of the KRX when in technical situations.

COMPETITION

The KRX1000 eS sits atop the suspension throne for its price point, but it has some stiff competition from a power perspective. This KRX has an MSRP of $28,499. Honda’s Talon 1000X-4 would be the KRX’s main competition, as it includes Honda’s version of Fox Live Valve, and it’s $24,199. The KRX offers a much more comfortable ride and more capable suspension than the Talon, but the Talon has a much more lively engine and transmission.

For $27,099, if you give up some features, you can pick up a 200 horsepower Can-Am Maverick X3 Max DS Turbo RR 64. You’ll give up full doors, internal bypass shocks, and electronic control over your suspension’s stiffness from the driver’s seat for that extra horsepower.

Polaris offers the now 9 year old RZR XP1000 Ultimate for $28,399, which includes a stereo system but no electronic shock control. To step up to Polaris or Can-Am’s electronic suspension equipped models, you are looking at $37,399 for the 181 horsepower RZR Pro XP Ultimate, or $35,399 for the Maverick X3 MAX X rs Turbo RR with Smart-Shox 72.

The KRX offers a unique blend of high-tech chassis and suspension performance with a loweroutput naturally aspirated engine, letting those who don’t need a massive amount of horsepower

TERYX KRX4 1000 ES 2023

The KRX’s interior is very accessory-friendly. Behind that cubby is a powered bus bar that can be used to wire accessories into the car with ease.

Kawasaki’s version of Fox Live Valve technology, called KECS, is easy to operate with a three-mode switch. Individual shock damping can be viewed on the cool graphics in the instrument cluster.

Kawasaki’s ROPS system is fairly stout, and the KRX delivers a solid feel from behind the wheel.

KAWASAKI UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 37

benefit from a big cost savings. You get a steel bodied Fox Internal Bypass shock as well, which required Kawasaki to check a couple of extra boxes on the Fox order forms when they built the car. It translates to a longer-lasting, plusher-riding shock.

IMPRESSIONS

We had a blast wheeling the KRX 4 over a variety of terrain in a couple of different states. The KRX really shines when the trails are rough and curvy, where the length of the car seems to shrink a bit. The 4-seat KRX really does drive and feel like the 2-seat version almost everywhere.

You notice the length when turning around or crossing a very steep breakover angle, and that’s about it. The KRX is fun to hustle in the corners, and the relatively tame engine performance translates into a car that allows you to use more of the throttle almost everywhere. The KRX shines when you put the hammer down and let the chassis work underneath you. It’s here where you’ll find where the R&D budget was spent, as the KRX sails over rough trails. This car is the sweet spot for customers looking for a ton of suspension performance without big turbo horsepower.

ENGINE

Honda’s engineering team decided to inject some sport DNA in the Pioneer’s powertrain. The engine is a 999 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin fourstroke engine with a Unicam cylinder-head and four valves per cylinder. It’s like a pair of CRF450R engines placed side by side, and detuned a little bit for a longer service life. Unicam is Honda speak for a combination of direct cam-on-bucket and forked rocker arm valve operation. This combo allows them to have the efficiency of four valves per cylinder without the cost, weight, or complexity of dual overhead cam systems. Unicam has been a Honda staple technology for decades.

For 2022, Honda updated valve timing and throttle-body settings to offer more punch in the mid-to-upper rev range without sacrificing the signature Honda smoothness. Honda bumped the Pioneer’s tow rating with the increase in power, now rated at 2,500 lbs.

Honda’s engineers chose to turn the engine sideways in the Pioneer, which allows the driveshafts to spin in the same direction as the crankshaft. Reducing right angles increases the efficiency of the drivetrain, allowing more power to be transmitted to the wheels instead of getting lost turning extra parts. This is called longitudinal mounting.

TRANSMISSION/DRIVETRAIN

In a category flooded with CVT transmissions, Honda dares to stand out with the Pioneer’s 6 speed dual clutch transmission. No rubber belts here, just two gear shafts side by side, actuated by two electronically controlled clutches that allow the Pioneer to seamlessly shift between gears at lightning-quick speeds.

Honda’s transmission is a true DCT, similar to the one found in the Talon and many European sports cars. It received tuning updates last year along with the engine re-tune, and it smoothed out the Pioneer’s shifting behavior quite a bit.

The transmission offers two modes, Standard and Sport, with Sport sharpening up the response and letting the revs hang longer before upshifting. Manual mode with paddle shifting can also be selected, giving the Pioneer pilot ultimate control over the DCT.

Honda’s four wheel drive system is all shaftdriven, with newer models receiving the i-4WD system on some trim levels. Short for Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive, i4WD is an electronicallycontrolled system that incorporates front and rear wheel drive, differential locking control, and individual wheel speed control by brake. The Pioneer’s onboard computer can manage all of these systems simultaneously, and with the help of wheel speed sensors, can apply force to the wheels with the most traction. For all but the most hardcore off-roaders, this means an easy “put it in 4 and go pretty much anywhere” level of climbing traction.

SUSPENSION

Honda’s Pioneer 1000-5 Trail is equipped with

fully independent double-wishbone front and rear suspension with 10.6 inches (front) and 10.0 inches (rear) suspension travel. This is on par with the segment, matched well against Kawasaki’s Teryx4 S. The Pioneer boasts more travel than the Yamaha Wolverine X4 850, and an upgraded shock absorber. For the price in the segment, the Honda is a great value, as it sits just below the jump up to Yamaha’s Wolverine RMax, Can-Am’s Commander, and Polaris’ General in the Sport Rec segment.

All Pioneer Trail edition models come with a set of Fox Podium QS3 shocks, which offer threeposition compression adjustability with an easyto-operate knob on each shock reservoir. The increased shock oil volume and revised spring and valving rates help the Pioneer to handle bigger holes a bit better. It offers more than enough suspension prowess for bounding down the trail and running over small junk. If the bump is larger than a curb, you should likely slow down a bit.

INTERIOR/EXTERIOR

Honda’s Pioneer 1000-5 gets its name from-

UTV REVIEW UTVOFFROADMAG.COM 46
Honda’s Pioneer 1000-5 is a three seater with convertible rear jump seats. This allows extra seats in a very short package.

you guessed it- seating capacity. In its standard configuration, the 1000-5 has a three-person bench seat up front and a large, caged bed in the rear. Flip the rear seat backs up, and two more spots become available for transporting people, although you do lose a considerable amount (pretty much all) of your cargo space while doing so. It’s a great option for those using this vehicle for work or recreation, and the seats can be operated independently for a mix of cargo and human capacity.

Honda revised the Pioneer last year with a lot of small details, including more durable driveshaft boots, upgraded heat shielding, and a strengthened skidplate. It also received a new insturment display with brighter, easier-to-read graphics. The display also gets more monitoring features like a clutch indicator and battery voltage meter. Trail edition models also get a 4500-lb winch, front interior lights, and a rearview mirror standard.

The Pioneer’s interior is fairly old school in its layout, with dash-mounted shifters and a hard plastic steering wheel. Interior durability will be superb as always with Honda, which is the most important

part. Honda includes lots of room for accessory switches, a cubby to store things or mount a radio, and a tilt steering wheel. Full doors come standard, as well as window nets, but no roof.

TIRES/WHEELS/BRAKES

Honda’s Pioneer 1000-5 Trail Edition comes with black/machined aluminum 14 inch non-beadlock wheels wrapped in Armstrong Dirt Master 2.0 tires. The Dirt Master 2.0’s measure 27x9R14 in the front and 27x11R14 in the rear. The tires

Honda includes 12 volt power at the back of the bed for accessory power and charging.
EDITION 2023
With the back seats folded down, the Pioneer’s bed extends all the way to the back of the front bench seat. With an accessory roof, this means covered storage for your gear.

feature an aggressive tread pattern clearly suited for chunky, wet/muddy conditions, not so much the desert Southwest. Braking is handled by four wheel independent hydraulic disc brakes, but also gets a hand from the i-4WD system by integrating engine and wheel braking into its hill descent control. It also features a hill start assist function to help drivers regain momentum if you have to stop on a climb.

COMPETITION

The Pioneer 1000-5 Trail Edition ($21,499) fits into the very top of what we would refer to as the “Utility Recreation” class. This includes vehicles like Kawasaki’s $20,999 Teryx4 S Special Edition, but also Polaris’ much longer and more utility-oriented Ranger Crew XP 1000 Premium at $22,099. CanAm’s Defender Max XT, also on the larger side, is $20,799. The next step up in the segment takes you to the level of the Yamaha Wolverine RMax

1000, Can-Am Commander 1000, and Polaris General 1000, which all hover about $6-7,000 higher than the Pioneer 1000-5.

IMPRESSIONS

The Pioneer 1000 is incredibly versatile and unique in its packaging. It’s substantially smaller than most of the other machines capable of seating more than 2 occupants, but is, by design, a compromise. This vehicle is made for the owner looking for an occasional multi-passenger capable unit, not to be used as one full-time. It hits a sweet spot of pricing, performance, and most importantly, personality. With the Honda’s peppy engine and DCT transmission, putting in trail miles just seems more fun than it does with some of the other buzzing CVT-powered units in this category. We give the nod to Honda for keeping things interesting.

UTV REVIEW
If you’re looking for a fun to drive, easy to use vessel for exploration, the Pioneer 1000-5 is a wonderful choice.
